The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

The verdict: Grok is a capable, fast AI assistant, and its tie to X gives it a genuine edge on breaking news and live sentiment. The current model, Grok 4.3, is a serious frontier model with a huge context window. But for an Australian small business, the case is thin. Pricing is set in US dollars, there is no Australian data residency, and the privacy posture is bound up with your public X activity in a way ChatGPT and Claude simply are not. Grok also carries reputational and content-moderation baggage that has drawn regulator attention here. It works in Australia and it is fast, but it is not the assistant I would put at the centre of an Australian business. If you already pay for X and want a competent built-in chatbot, it is a fair bonus. As a standalone purchase, ChatGPT or Claude remain the safer picks. Score: 15/25 — Good.

What it is

Grok is the AI assistant built by xAI, Elon Musk's AI company, the same group behind X (formerly Twitter). You can use it three ways: free with limits, bundled into an X Premium subscription, or as a standalone paid plan called SuperGrok via the Grok apps and grok.com.

Its defining feature is the live link to X. Grok can pull from public posts in real time, which makes it stronger than most rivals at "what is happening right now" questions. The current model is Grok 4.3, confirmed on xAI's developer documentation as its most capable general model, with a one-million-token context window for API users.

That context window is large. For comparison, it means Grok can hold a very long document, or a long back-and-forth, in working memory at once. The model is positioned as a direct competitor to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

What it costs in Australia

Grok does not publish native Australian dollar pricing on its website, and through the web or X you are billed in US dollars, so your bank's foreign-transaction fee and the live exchange rate apply.

In the iPhone app there is a real Australian price list, and it is worth knowing because xAI's own pricing page sits behind bot protection and cannot be read. Apple does not convert xAI's USD figure at checkout — it publishes fixed Australian tiers, bills through Apple Pty Limited as merchant of record and includes GST. Read from the Australian App Store listing on 21 September 2026, which declares "priceCurrency":"AUD":

Plan (in-app) Price per month GST
SuperGrok Lite A$15.00 Included
SuperGrok A$50.00 (also listed at A$500.00 annually) Included
SuperGrok Plus A$150.00 Included
SuperGrok Heavy A$500.00 Included
Extra usage credits A$8.00 · A$30.00 · A$80.00 · A$150.00 Included

Read the credit packs carefully. Apple lists them as "Extra Usage Credits 5 USD", "20 USD", "50 USD" and "100 USD" — the names carry a US dollar figure and the charges are A$8.00, A$30.00, A$80.00 and A$150.00. The name is the amount of xAI credit you receive; the price is what leaves your Australian account.

The USD table below is the web and X path, with an indicative AUD conversion at ×1.40. Those USD figures are corroborated across independent pricing trackers as of September 2026 and cross-checked against xAI's announcements — confirm the current figure at checkout.

Plan Price (USD) Approx AUD (x1.40) What you get
Free $0 $0 Core text chat with daily/hourly caps
SuperGrok Lite US$10/mo ~A$14.00/mo Entry paid tier; Grok Imagine access
SuperGrok US$30/mo (or US$300/yr) ~A$42.00/mo Full Grok access, higher limits, DeepSearch, Big Brain mode
X Premium / Premium+ US$8 / US$40/mo ~A$11 / ~A$56/mo X subscription that bundles Grok access
SuperGrok Heavy US$300/mo ~A$420/mo Maximum limits, multi-agent "Heavy" mode

GST: For digital services sold to Australian consumers, GST is generally added or included under Australia's rules for imported digital products. xAI does not state its GST treatment on a page we could verify, so confirm at checkout. On iOS, Apple's AUD price is inclusive of GST.

The only pricing we could confirm against a primary source is the developer API: Grok 4.3 runs at US$1.25 per million input tokens and US$2.50 per million output tokens, per xAI's own docs. That is relevant only if you are building software, not chatting.

How it works / features

You use Grok through a clean chat interface on the web, in the Grok mobile apps, or inside X itself. The experience is familiar to anyone who has used ChatGPT: type a question, get an answer, follow up.

The standout features:

  • Live X search. Grok can reference public posts as they happen. For tracking a breaking story, a product launch, or public reaction, this is genuinely useful and hard for rivals to match.
  • DeepSearch. A research mode that runs multiple searches and synthesises a longer answer with sources.
  • Large context window. One million tokens via the API, which suits long documents and extended sessions.
  • Image and video generation. Available on paid tiers, with the higher tiers unlocking better quality.
  • "Heavy" multi-agent mode. On the top plan, Grok runs several reasoning agents in parallel on hard problems — aimed at power users, not everyday work.

Grok 4.3 is built to reason before answering on every query, which xAI frames as a push for accuracy. In practice it is a strong, current model that holds its own against the other frontier assistants on general tasks.

What it does well

Real-time awareness. This is the real reason to use Grok. If your work touches news, public sentiment, or fast-moving topics, the live X connection is a concrete advantage. ChatGPT and Claude both search the web, but neither has Grok's native, instant read on the X firehose.

Speed and capability. Grok 4.3 is fast and answers complex questions well. The one-million-token context window is among the largest available, which matters if you regularly feed it long documents.

A reasonable bundle if you already pay for X. If you run an X account for your business and already subscribe, Grok comes along for the ride. As an included extra, it is a fair deal.

No country block. Unlike some US AI products, Grok is available to Australian users. You can sign up and pay from Australia today.

Where it falls short

No Australian dollar pricing on the web. Outside the iOS app, you pay in USD and absorb the exchange rate plus any card fee. That is friction every month, and it makes budgeting harder than rivals that quote AUD or localise cleanly.

Privacy posture tied to X. By default, xAI's approach to training is bound up with your public X activity. Public X posts are used to train Grok unless you opt out in your X settings, by xAI's own public guidance. Conversations on grok.com are reported to default to not training the model unless you opt in. That split is confusing, and the X side is an opt-out, not an opt-in. For a business handling client information, that is a real consideration.

Reputational and moderation baggage. Grok has repeatedly drawn criticism and regulator attention over content moderation and outputs. Australia's online-safety regime now requires age verification that gates adult content on X, and media coverage of that regime has named Grok's image tools. None of this makes Grok unusable, but it is baggage that ChatGPT and Claude do not carry to the same degree.

No Australian support or data residency. There is no AU support channel and no statement of onshore data storage that we could verify. Your data is governed by US-based terms.

Australian fit

Currency. No native AUD on the web; USD billing with exchange-rate exposure. Apple localises to AUD on iOS only.

GST. Not separately broken out by xAI on an accessible page. On iOS, Apple's AUD price is GST-inclusive; for web/USD billing, confirm GST treatment at checkout.

Data residency. No Australian or onshore data residency commitment that we could confirm. Data is handled under US-governed terms.

Privacy Act. xAI is a US company. There is no AU-specific privacy commitment beyond what its global policy provides. The default training posture is tied to your public X activity with an opt-out, which sits awkwardly with Australian expectations around consent.

Local support. None specific to Australia. Support is global, app- and web-based.

Availability. Grok is available in Australia. The only AU-specific friction is age verification under Australia's online-safety laws, which restricts 18+ content — not access to the assistant itself.

For an Australian small business weighing where to put its trust and its monthly spend, this adds up to a weak local fit. It works, but nothing about it is built for Australia.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 Capable model, and a fair bonus if you already pay for X. But USD billing and the steep jump to Heavy hurt the standalone case.
Ease of Use 4/5 Clean, familiar chat interface. Fast to get going for anyone who has used ChatGPT.
Feature Depth 4/5 Strong current model, huge context window, live X search and DeepSearch. Genuinely competitive on capability.
Australian Fit 2/5 No AUD pricing on the web or on X, no AU data residency, US-governed privacy tied to X activity, no local support. Available, but not built for here. Real AUD tiers exist in the iPhone app (SuperGrok A$50/month, GST included) — enough to keep the row off a 1, not enough to lift it. (Rationale expanded 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged.)
Reliability & Support 2/5 Backed by a well-resourced company, but moderation controversies, no AU support, and an opt-out training default knock confidence.
Total 15/25

⭐⭐⭐ Good.

Australian Fit note: A five-star Excellent rating requires an Australian Fit score of at least 4/5. Grok scores 2/5 on Australian Fit, so it could not reach five stars regardless of its total. See our methodology.

Bottom line

If you already pay for X, Grok is a competent, fast assistant that comes bundled, and the live X search is a real perk. Use it. Just do not feed it anything sensitive about clients without checking your data-sharing settings first.

If you are an Australian small business choosing one paid AI assistant, this is not the one. ChatGPT and Claude give you cleaner pricing, clearer privacy controls, and none of the moderation baggage. Grok's real-time edge does not outweigh those gaps for most everyday business work.

If your work depends on real-time news or public sentiment — a journalist, a marketer tracking launches, a social media manager — Grok earns a place as a second tool. Nothing else reads the X firehose as directly.

If privacy is your priority, look elsewhere, or at minimum opt out of training in your X settings and keep sensitive work off the platform. The default posture is not built around Australian consent expectations.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Correction: Apple does not "convert" Grok's price, it sets one — and this review could have quoted it. No score change. This review said "On iPhone, Apple converts to AUD at its own App Store rate", and then priced every tier off xAI's USD list with a ×1.40 conversion, noting that xAI's own pricing page sits behind bot protection. That describes the wrong mechanism and skips a readable primary source. Apple does not convert anything: it publishes fixed Australian price tiers in Australian dollars, bills through Apple Pty Limited as merchant of record, and includes GST. The Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" and lists SuperGrok Lite A$15, SuperGrok A$50, SuperGrok Plus A$150 and SuperGrok Heavy A$500 per month, plus usage credit packs. So the AUD figures in the table below are no longer our arithmetic on a page we could not read — they are xAI's own Australian prices. Note the trap in the credit packs, which is worth seeing: they are named "Extra Usage Credits 5 USD", "20 USD", "50 USD" and "100 USD" and priced at A$8.00, A$30.00, A$80.00 and A$150.00. A SKU name in one currency, a charge in another. Australian Fit holds at 2/5 — the row is docked for web AUD pricing, data residency and local support, and only the first of those is now nuanced. • 20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — A second Australian age regime now applies, separate from the X age verification noted below. Since 9 March 2026, eSafety's Age-Restricted Material Codes have required an AI service that can generate sexually explicit, self-harm or high-impact violence material to confirm the user is 18 or older before they reach it. Grok's image tools sit inside that description. App stores have had to age-check R18+ downloads since 9 September 2026. eSafety has named these chatbots its first enforcement priority for 2026.
