Verdict in one line: The default image generator for most Australians is now whatever's inside the Gemini app — and Nano Banana 2 made that a compliment.

⚠️ STALENESS FLAG — 5 September 2026. This first look was published 27 February 2026 and is 190 days old. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of February 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)

What launched

On 26 February 2026 Google rolled out Nano Banana 2 — technically Gemini 3.1 Flash Image — the successor to its meme-named image model, across the Gemini app, Search, Ads and Flow. The pitch: Pro-model image quality at Flash-model speed. It replaced Nano Banana Pro across the Gemini app's Fast, Thinking and Pro modes, with the rollout covering 141 new countries and territories and eight more languages.

What it does

Text-to-image and image editing inside Gemini: product mock-ups, social tiles, photo edits, text rendering inside images (historically the weak spot — noticeably better here). Because it sits inside the assistant, iteration is conversational — "same, but on a white background" works.

Pricing for Australians

Free inside the Gemini app, with higher usage limits on paid Google AI plans — AI Plus at A$7.99 a month, AI Pro at A$32.99, AI Ultra from A$149.99 (see our Google AI Plus first look). For an Australian small business, the marginal cost of decent image generation just hit zero.

Australian Fit

AI image generation in Gemini is available in all countries where the app is — Australia included, day one, in English. Google bills Australian subscriptions in AUD, which remains rarer than it should be. Processing happens offshore, and outputs carry Google's SynthID watermark, now being paired with C2PA Content Credentials. 4/5.

Early read

Good: speed transforms how you use it — near-instant iterations change image generation from a task into a conversation; text-in-image quality finally usable for simple signage and social graphics. Not so good: fine-grained control still trails Midjourney for considered brand work; outputs carry Google's invisible SynthID watermark and C2PA credentials, and the generative-AI terms deserve a read before commercial use; and free-tier limits arrive quickly on a busy day.

Early verdict

If you pay for Midjourney for occasional social images, this is your sign to test whether you still need to. If you make brand-critical visuals weekly, keep the specialist tool — but Nano Banana 2 is now the obvious first stop for everyone else.
