Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Ambience Healthcare is the most technically ambitious AI clinical documentation platform on the market. It does far more than transcribe — it pulls from the patient's entire longitudinal record to generate chart-aware notes, coding suggestions, referral drafts, and after-visit summaries. For large US hospital systems already running Epic or Cerner, the value case is strong. For Australian clinicians, the picture is bleak: there are no publicly announced Australian deployments, pricing is enterprise-only with no AUD figures, data residency is unconfirmed, and the company's focus is firmly on the US health system. This is a product to watch, not one to adopt today. Ambience does not replace clinical judgement or qualified medical advice.

What Ambience Healthcare is

Ambience Healthcare was founded in 2020 by Mike Ng and Nikhil Buduma in San Francisco. It has raised USD $313 million across multiple rounds — including a USD $243 million Series C in July 2025 co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Oak HC/FT, with participation from the OpenAI Startup Fund and Kleiner Perkins. The company is valued at approximately USD $1 billion.

Ambience's core offering is what it calls an "AI operating system for healthcare" — a platform that wraps around existing EHRs (primarily Epic and Cerner) and handles documentation, coding, and communication tasks automatically. The headline product is AutoScribe, which generates real-time clinical notes from ambient consultations. Surrounding it are:

  • AutoCDI — automated clinical documentation improvement and ICD coding suggestions
  • AutoAVS — AI-generated after-visit summaries for patients
  • AutoRefer — automated referral letter drafting
  • AutoPrep — chart-aware pre-visit summaries that pull from the patient's full longitudinal record
  • Chart Awareness (launched February 2026) — the platform ingests prior notes, lab trends, imaging history, and medication changes before generating any document

The company targets large hospital systems, not individual clinicians or small practices. Its published clients include Houston Methodist, MultiCare Health System, Cleveland Clinic, and UCSF.

What it costs in Australia

Ambience Healthcare does not publish pricing. The company sells exclusively through enterprise contracts with health systems.

Third-party sources and industry estimates (estimate) suggest costs in the range of USD $300–500 per provider per month for the core platform, rising higher for full suite deployments. Annual enterprise contracts can reach USD $2,800–$5,000 per provider.

Converted to AUD (estimate) at 1.40:

  • Per provider per month: approximately AUD $420–$775 (estimate), ex-GST
  • Per provider annually: approximately AUD $4,340–$7,750 (estimate), ex-GST

For a health system with 100 providers, that is a rough annual investment of AUD $434,000–$775,000 (estimate) before implementation, customisation, and ongoing support costs. These are estimates only — actual pricing requires a direct sales engagement and is negotiated based on practice scale, EHR environment, and contract length.

There is no self-serve tier, no free trial, and no small-practice option.

How it works in practice

A clinician begins a consultation. Ambience listens through an app on the clinician's phone or a connected device. As the conversation unfolds, AutoScribe builds the note in real time within the EHR — not as a rough transcript to clean up, but as a structured clinical note formatted to the specialty and template.

The chart awareness layer is what separates Ambience from simpler scribes. Before the consultation begins, AutoPrep has already reviewed the patient's prior notes, medication history, lab results, and imaging. When AutoScribe generates the assessment and plan, it draws on that context — so if the patient mentioned they stopped taking metformin two months ago, the note can reflect how that fits with their HbA1c trend.

After the visit, AutoAVS generates a plain-language summary for the patient. If a referral is needed, AutoRefer drafts it — already populated with the relevant clinical history — so the clinician is editing rather than writing from scratch.

Clinician utilisation rates above 80% and enterprise Net Promoter Scores above 60 are cited by the company, validated by third-party audit at deployed US sites.

What it does well

Genuine chart awareness. Most AI scribes listen to a single consultation in isolation. Ambience's platform ingests the patient's full record before documenting the encounter. That is a meaningful architectural difference — it means the note can reflect longitudinal context that a standalone transcription tool would miss.

Specialty breadth. The platform covers more than 200 specialties, including psychiatry, oncology, and emergency medicine — areas where documentation is complex and where simpler scribes produce inadequate output.

Coding integration. AutoCDI does not just suggest codes — it argues for them using clinical evidence from the note and the chart. For health systems under revenue cycle pressure, this is a direct financial return, not just a productivity gain.

Enterprise reliability. At the scale of Houston Methodist or MultiCare, platform uptime and EHR integration stability are existential requirements. Ambience's SOC 2 Type I and Type II certification and HIPAA compliance posture are appropriate for that operating environment.

Clinical communication automation. Drafting referrals and after-visit summaries automatically saves real time — and reduces the risk of clinical handover gaps. AutoRefer, in particular, is something most scribes do not attempt.

What it doesn't do well

Not accessible to small or mid-size practices. The product is designed for health systems with hundreds of providers, procurement teams, and existing Epic/Cerner infrastructure. A GP practice or specialist clinic cannot buy Ambience. It is simply not positioned or priced for that market.

No Australian deployment track record. All published case studies and announced deployments are in the US. There is no evidence of Ambience operating within the Australian health system, negotiating with Australian health networks, or engaging with Australian regulators. (any Australian pilot or deployment as of June 2026)

No Australian data residency confirmation. Ambience Healthcare's security documentation references SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance but does not make public statements about Australian data residency. Under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Health Records Act frameworks in each state, any Australian health system considering Ambience would need to negotiate data processing terms covering where patient data is stored and processed. (Ambience data hosting regions and cross-border disclosure controls)

Not a product for individual clinicians. If you are a GP or a solo specialist, Ambience is not for you. The onboarding, implementation, and pricing are all calibrated to enterprise health systems with dedicated IT teams.

No public pricing of any kind. Not even ballpark figures. In a competitive market where Heidi Health and Lyrebird Health publish clear pricing, this is a significant transparency gap.

Does not replace clinical judgement. Every note Ambience generates is a draft. The treating clinician is responsible for reviewing and approving every entry before it enters the medical record. AHPRA is explicit: the practitioner remains responsible for safe and quality care. Patient informed consent for AI-assisted documentation is required before any consultation recording begins.

Australian fit: patient privacy, data residency, TGA and AHPRA

Privacy Act 1988. Patient consultation audio and derived clinical notes are health information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the corresponding state statutes (Health Records Act 2001, Vic; Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002, NSW; etc.). Disclosing this information to an overseas cloud service requires the disclosing organisation to take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient provides substantially equivalent protections to those under the APPs. A signed data processing agreement with confirmed data location is non-negotiable.

TGA. Ambience's AutoScribe function — ambient transcription and note formatting — is unlikely to require TGA registration as a medical device on its own. However, AutoCDI's coding suggestions and the Chart Awareness layer's diagnostic contextualisation may bring the platform closer to the TGA's definition of clinical decision support software. The TGA's guidance on digital scribes notes that software that influences diagnostic or treatment decisions may require registration on the ARTG. Any Australian health system evaluating Ambience should obtain a TGA regulatory opinion before deployment. (Ambience's TGA classification position)

AHPRA. Patient consent for AI use is an AHPRA expectation. Patients must be informed that an AI system will process their consultation audio before that recording begins.

My Health Record. Documentation generated by Ambience and uploaded to My Health Record must meet the requirements of the My Health Record Act 2012. Given the platform's enterprise orientation, any Australian deployment would need to include this compliance review as part of procurement.

Australian Fit score: 1/5. No confirmed Australian deployments, no confirmed Australian data residency, no Australian regulatory engagement on record, enterprise-only model excludes most Australian practices.

Alternatives

For Australian clinicians and health organisations, these are the realistic options:

  • Heidi Health — Australian-built, locally hosted, Privacy Act compliant, compatible with Best Practice and Medical Director. The strongest AU-native option.
  • Lyrebird Health — Australian-built scribe with a free tier and AU data hosting. Strong for GPs.
  • Nabla — US/French-built with published data residency controls and broad international deployment experience. Better AU fit than Ambience.
  • Abridge — Another US enterprise scribe with some international presence. Worth comparing if you are a large health system.
  • Best AI Medical Scribes in Australia — our full category roundup.

Bottom line

Ambience Healthcare has built something genuinely impressive. The chart-aware documentation approach, the breadth of specialties covered, and the clinical communication automation (referrals, after-visit summaries) go well beyond what most scribes offer. The platform has earned its unicorn valuation on the back of demonstrable results at large US hospital systems.

But none of that is available to Australian healthcare today in any practical sense. There are no Australian deployments, no Australian data residency commitments, no Australian EHR integrations beyond the US enterprise EHR stack, and no path to adoption for any practice outside a large hospital system. The pricing alone makes it inaccessible to the vast majority of Australian clinicians.

Australian health organisations should keep Ambience on a watch list for 2027 and beyond, particularly if the company moves to internationalise. Right now, Heidi Health and Lyrebird Health are the sensible choices.

Ambience Healthcare does not replace clinical judgement or qualified medical advice. The treating clinician is responsible for reviewing and approving every generated note before it enters the patient record.
