The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Freed is a highly polished AI medical scribe with strong adoption among US and Canadian clinicians. The product works — transcription is fast, note quality is high, and the workflow is genuinely low-friction. The problem for Australian clinicians is structural: patient data is stored on US servers, there are no integrations with Best Practice or MedicalDirector, and Freed publishes no compliance posture under the Privacy Act 1988. A clinician who has assessed the data implications and is prepared to copy-paste notes can get real value from it. Most Australian practices — and virtually all public health settings — should look at the local options first. This tool does not replace clinical judgement or qualified medical advice.

What Freed is

Freed is an AI medical scribe built for individual clinicians — GPs, nurse practitioners, specialists, and allied health professionals. The company, Freed Inc., is headquartered at 548 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94104. It is a US business with no Australian entity.

The product listens passively to a clinical consultation via a smartphone or desktop app, then generates a structured SOAP note — or a note in another template format — within roughly 60 to 90 seconds of the visit ending. Freed is not an EHR. It sits alongside your existing clinical software and produces a draft note you review and copy into your records.

On the Premier plan, Freed pushes notes directly into browser-based EHR systems via a Chrome extension. The supported EHRs are US-centric — Epic, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, and similar. Best Practice and MedicalDirector, the two dominant Australian GP systems, are not on that list.

Freed covers more than 20 specialties: family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, mental health, paediatrics, OB/GYN, orthopaedic surgery, emergency medicine, and more. Premier adds ICD-10 coding suggestions, patient instruction letters, and referral drafts. A "clinician assistant" feature provides an AI chat layer for editing notes and answering clinical questions with medical knowledge built in.

Freed states it is used by more than 100,000 clinicians globally, primarily in the US.

What it costs in Australia

Freed prices in USD. There is no AUD pricing, no Australian billing entity, and no stated GST treatment.

Plan USD/month Approx. AUD (×1.40) Notes
Starter US$39 ~A$55 Up to 40 notes/month
Core US$79 ~A$111 Unlimited notes
Premier (monthly) US$119 ~A$167 EHR push, ICD-10, patient letters
Premier (annual) US$104/mo ~A$146/mo Billed as annual lump sum
Groups Custom — Contact sales

AUD conversions based on approximately USD 1 = AUD 1.40 as of September 2026. Indicative only — your actual cost varies with the exchange rate. GST treatment on imported digital services is — consult your accountant.

A 7-day free trial is available on all plans, no credit card required. A 50% student discount applies to the monthly individual plan.

The Core tier (~A$111–134/month) is cheaper than Australian-built rivals such as Heidi Health's Clinician plan (~A$233/month) or Lyrebird Health (~A$160/month). But those tools store data in Australia. Price is not the only variable here.

How it works in practice

Open the Freed app, tap Record, and set your device to one side. Freed listens passively to the consultation. When the visit ends, tap Stop. A structured SOAP note — or your chosen template — appears in the Freed dashboard within 60 to 90 seconds. You review it, edit if needed, and copy it into your clinical records.

That workflow is genuinely smooth. The interface is clean. Template customisation is available: you can ask Freed to "learn your format" from an edited note and apply it to future notes automatically. Transcription supports 14 languages including Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and French, which is useful in urban Australian practices with multilingual patients. Note output is always in English.

On the Premier plan, the EHR push feature sends notes directly into browser-based EHR systems. In an Australian practice running Best Practice or MedicalDirector, there is no equivalent integration — copy-paste is the default workflow.

Audio recordings are deleted automatically once the note has been generated and quality-checked. Freed states that AI model training uses only de-identified notes.

What it does well

Speed and note quality. The core product is fast. A structured SOAP note within 90 seconds is realistic. User reports consistently describe note quality as high — appropriate clinical terminology, logical structure, and good capture of nuance during the consultation.

Specialty breadth. Templates across more than 20 specialties mean Freed is not just for GPs. Psychiatry, mental health, paediatrics, and functional medicine templates are available. A specialist in private practice can trial the tool without a complex enterprise deployment.

Minimal workflow disruption. There is no command structure or rigid prompting. You talk to your patient as you normally would, and review the note afterwards. Freed does not change the consultation.

Multilingual capture. Fourteen languages are supported for audio capture, with English-language note output. This is practically useful in multicultural Australian practices.

Clinician assistant. The AI chat feature — available on Core and Premier — allows clinicians to ask clinical questions with patient context already loaded. It is a useful secondary tool, not just a note-taker.

What it doesn't do well

Patient data stored offshore. This is the central limitation for Australian clinicians. Freed's infrastructure is in the United States. Under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, transferring identifiable health information to an overseas entity creates obligations under APP 8 (cross-border disclosure). Freed is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2 Type 2 certified — US regulatory standards that do not equal Australian compliance. Clinicians in public health settings, or those working with hospitals and state health services, may be prohibited from using tools with offshore data storage. Private practitioners must independently assess their obligations.

No Australian EHR integration. Best Practice and MedicalDirector are the primary GP clinical systems in Australia. Freed has no native integration with either. Copy-paste is the current workflow for Australian users.

USD pricing only. No AUD pricing, no local billing entity, no stated GST treatment. Australian clinicians are charged in USD, subject to currency fluctuation.

No published Privacy Act 1988 compliance posture. Freed's compliance documentation addresses HIPAA and HITECH. There is no published statement addressing the Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Privacy Principles, or the My Health Record Act 2012. For clinicians who generate information that may be associated with a My Health Record, this is an unresolved gap.

ICD-10 coding is US-oriented. The Premier plan offers ICD-10 coding suggestions, but the billing logic is built for US clinical workflows. Australian Medicare uses MBS item numbers, not ICD-10 billing codes. The ICD-10 output is a clinical reference, not an Australian billing tool. (not published by Freed — verify directly with Freed before relying on this for billing purposes.)

This tool does not replace clinical judgement or qualified medical advice. Every note Freed generates is a first draft. Clinicians must review it for accuracy before it enters the medical record. Freed is a documentation aid. It is not a diagnostic tool, and it cannot substitute for the clinician's professional judgement.

Australian fit — patient privacy, TGA/AHPRA, AU EHR integration

Data residency: Patient data is stored on US servers. Freed has not published Australian data residency options as of June 2026. This is a material issue under the Privacy Act 1988 and APP 8 (cross-border disclosure of personal information). Clinicians at public hospitals, state health services, or practices with explicit data sovereignty obligations should seek legal or compliance advice before deploying Freed.

Privacy Act 1988 / My Health Record Act: No published compliance position for Australian law. Freed's published compliance covers HIPAA and HITECH. Australian Notifiable Data Breach obligations apply to clinicians if a breach occurs, regardless of where data is hosted.

TGA / AHPRA: Freed is not listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a medical device, and it does not claim to be one. It is a documentation aid. AHPRA's professional obligations around accurate clinical record-keeping apply in full — the AI draft does not reduce the clinician's responsibility for the accuracy of every note.

AU EHR integration: No integration with Best Practice or MedicalDirector. The Chrome-extension EHR push supports US browser-based systems only.

Support: US-based support team. No confirmed Australian business-hours support.

AU availability: Freed is accessible globally via web, iOS, and Android. There is no Australian entity, no local support, and no AU-specific compliance documentation.

Australian Fit score: 2/5

Alternatives

If data residency or AU EHR integration matters — and for most Australian practices it should — the local-built options are the better starting point.

  • Heidi Health — Melbourne-built, onshore data, native Best Practice and MedicalDirector integration, free tier available. Our category top pick (22/25).
  • Lyrebird Health — Melbourne-built, AWS Sydney hosting end-to-end, cleanest onshore data story in the category, free Lite tier (21/25).
  • Nabla — French-built, strong product quality, Epic integration, but EU data hosting — not Australia (14/25).

Bottom line

Freed is a well-made product with genuine user love and strong note quality. The workflow is clean, the free trial is a fair way to assess it, and the price is competitive in USD terms. But "designed for the US market" is not a cosmetic detail. Patient data on US servers is a real compliance consideration. No Best Practice or MedicalDirector integration is a real workflow gap. No AUD pricing, no local support, and no published Privacy Act 1988 compliance position close out the case.

For a solo clinician who has assessed the data implications, is comfortable with the offshore storage risk, and wants a polished scribe at ~A$60/month (Starter, approx. ex-GST), Freed is a reasonable option. For any practice with a compliance function, a hospital relationship, or patients on My Health Record, the Australian-built alternatives make more sense. Start with Heidi Health's free tier.

This tool does not replace clinical judgement or qualified medical advice.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Nothing was re-cut — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed "Approx. AUD if GST charged (+10%)" (Starter ~A$60; Core ~A$122; Premier (monthly) ~A$183; Premier (annual) ~A$160/mo). The GST position is stated in words once in the note above the pricing table. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
