Gemini vs Perplexity for Australians in 2026: Price or Proof?
Our pick: Google Gemini. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Winner: Google Gemini for most Australian readers. It costs A$7.99/month (inc GST), bills in native AUD, and is IRAP certified with Sydney and Melbourne data centres. Pick Perplexity instead if research is your actual job — its cited-sources engine is the best in the category.

What both tools actually do
These two barely compete on features. Gemini is Google's flagship all-purpose assistant, running Gemini 3.1 Pro on paid tiers and Gemini 3.6 Flash free. It lives inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, generates images, sees the live web through Google Search, and bills in Australian dollars. For a small business owner, it is a general assistant that happens to be the cheapest paid option in the country.
Perplexity is not a chatbot. It is a cited-sources research engine. It searches the live web for every query, synthesises an answer, and shows where each claim came from. The Q1 2026 product cycle turned it into a multi-product research platform. Model Council runs one query through three frontier models at once. Perplexity Computer executes whole workflows for hours. Deep Research runs an Anthropic Opus model.
So this comparison is really about your work. One tool is a versatile generalist with an unbeatable local package. The other is a specialist that does one thing — verifiable research — better than anything else we have tested.
Pricing in Australia
Gemini's ladder moved on 11 June 2026, and in the buyer's favour. Google's Australian subscriptions page now lists AI Plus at A$7.99/month (inc GST). That is a 36% cut from the price we verified in May. It is the standard price — no promo qualifier on the page. AI Pro holds at A$32.99/month (inc GST). Ultra has been restructured into two tiers: A$149.99/month for 5× AI Pro limits and A$329.99/month for 20× (both inc GST). The free tier ran Gemini 3.5 Flash at that point and now runs Gemini 3.6 Flash (re-checked 10 September 2026). Every figure is native AUD with GST included, on an invoice your accountant can read.
Perplexity bills in USD, and GST is not explicitly documented on its pricing pages. Our AUD figures are estimates at an exchange rate of ~1.40, ex-GST — check your first invoice. As verified on 16 May 2026, Pro costs USD$20/month (~A$28.00 est. ex-GST). Annual billing is USD$200/year — about A$23.33/month ex-GST, roughly A$280 up front. Enterprise Pro runs USD$40/seat/month (~A$56.00 est. ex-GST). Enterprise Max — the only tier with serious data controls — costs USD$325/seat/month (~A$455.00 est. ex-GST). The free tier gives unlimited standard searches plus five Pro Searches a day.
The gap at the entry point is stark. Gemini's paid plan costs less than a third of Perplexity Pro on annual billing. And it does so in real Australian dollars with no exchange-rate wobble. The June price cut makes Gemini the cheapest paid AI assistant an Australian can buy — by a wider margin than before.
Where Gemini wins
- Price, and it is not close. A$7.99/month inc GST versus ~A$23.33/month ex-GST for Perplexity Pro annual. Gemini is the cheapest paid assistant in the category.
- Native AUD billing. Perplexity charges your card in USD, so your cost floats with the exchange rate. Gemini's price is fixed, local, and GST-inclusive on the page.
- Data sovereignty. Sydney and Melbourne data centres plus IRAP certification, on standard plans. Perplexity advertises no AU data residency and no IRAP on any tier — including Enterprise Max.
- Breadth. Gemini writes, summarises, generates images (Nano Banana Pro) and video (Veo 3.1 Lite on Plus). Perplexity does none of that well — it is built for search and research only.
- Workspace integration. Summarising Gmail threads and drafting in Docs without tab-switching. If your business runs on Google, the A$7.99 tier slots into tools you already pay for.
Where Perplexity wins
- Every answer comes with cited sources. You can see where each claim came from and verify it yourself. For lawyers, analysts and journalists, that is the feature — and Gemini has no equivalent discipline.
- Deep Research on an Anthropic Opus model. Since 13 February 2026 it produces structured multi-source reports in minutes; Perplexity's help centre names Opus 4.6 for Max and Opus 4.5 for Pro, while its model roster lists Opus 5 and no 4.6 — so take the exact version with caution. For due diligence or competitor work, it saves hours per query.
- Model Council is unique in the category. The Max tier runs your query through three frontier models in parallel — one each from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google by default, swappable from a picker (help centre, read 21 September 2026) — then reconciles the outputs. No other consumer AI does this — including Gemini itself.
- Perplexity Computer and Comet. The Max-tier agentic system runs entire workflows for hours. The Comet browser puts an agent inside every page on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.
- The better free tier for researchers. Five Pro Searches a day plus unlimited standard searches is genuinely useful work, not a demo. It earned a 5/5 for Ease of Use in our review; Gemini scored 4/5.
Which to pick — decision framework
- You want one capable, affordable assistant → Gemini AI Plus at A$7.99/month (inc GST). Nothing else comes close at the price.
- Your business runs on Gmail and Google Docs → Gemini. The integration alone settles it.
- You do research, due diligence or competitive analysis for a living → Perplexity Pro on annual billing at ~A$23.33/month (ex-GST). Deep Research repays that within weeks.
- You handle regulated or data-sovereignty-sensitive material → Gemini, for the Sydney and Melbourne residency and IRAP certification. Perplexity is a hard no here — and for government-grade work, our Perplexity review points to Microsoft Copilot instead.
- You are a full-time analyst → consider Perplexity Max for Model Council and Perplexity Computer. Everyone else should stay on Pro.
- You can justify both → Gemini AI Plus plus Perplexity Pro annual totals roughly A$37/month. That buys the best local package and the best research engine together.
The verdict
For the default reader — a Melbourne business owner who wants one paid AI subscription — pick Gemini. The reasons are specific. It costs A$7.99/month inc GST, the cheapest paid assistant available to Australians. It bills in native AUD with GST included. It keeps data in Sydney and Melbourne with IRAP certification. And it does far more things — writing, images, Workspace tasks — than a research engine ever will. That package is why it holds our top Australian Fit score (5/5) and the higher overall score (22/25).
Perplexity is the better tool at its speciality, and our 21/25 reflects that. But our methodology has an Australian Fit gate. A tool scoring below 4/5 on Australian Fit cannot be the unqualified pick for Australians. Perplexity scores 3/5 — USD-only billing, no AU data residency, no IRAP, no local support hours. Until that changes, it is a four-star specialist, not the category answer.
So: unless research is your actual job, pick Gemini. If it is — analysis, due diligence, market intelligence — pick Perplexity Pro and accept the USD billing. It will out-research Gemini every day of the week. It just won't out-Australian it.
Update history
- 21 Sep 2026 — Perplexity model claims re-verified against the vendor's own help centre and corrected (corpus-wide sweep,
Audits/model-claims-sweep-2026-09-21.md). Model Council no longer runs a fixed Opus 4.6 / GPT-5.5 / Gemini 3.1 Pro trio — Perplexity now documents the default only as "one frontier model each from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google", user-swappable from a picker (help centre); the old claim was wrong and has been rewritten. Deep Research is still documented as Opus 4.6 Thinking for Max and Opus 4.5 Thinking for Pro (help centre, last modified 15 September 2026), but the same help centre's model roster lists Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 and no 4.6 at all (roster), so the version is now stated generically. No score change. Wayback: capture pending (archive.org unavailable 21 Sep 2026).
