Dext Review Australia 2026: The receipt-capture tool your bookkeeper already loves

- A$33.58/mo · +GST · billed in AUD

- None advertised. Hosted on AWS, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, annual pen testing.
The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Dext is the best-known way to stop typing receipts into your accounting software by hand. You photograph an invoice or forward a supplier email, Dext's AI reads the supplier, date, total and GST, and pushes a coded transaction into Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks. It bills in real Australian dollars — from AUD$33.58/month for a business, GST excluded — and it pulls and validates ABNs, which most overseas rivals don't. For a small business already on Xero or MYOB, or any bookkeeper running multiple clients, it is a clear recommend and pays for itself in saved hours. Two honest caveats: the "99.9% accuracy" is Dext's own number and you still have to check the OCR (it misreads handwriting, faded dockets and odd layouts), and your data sits on AWS with no advertised Australian hosting region. It does not replace your accountant or your own review of the books — the human stays accountable for what gets filed.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)
Most tools in our Finance & Accounting category try to be the whole accounting system. Dext doesn't. It sits on top of the system you already use and does one job extremely well: turning the paper and PDFs that pile up in a business into clean, coded data inside Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks. Judge it on that job, not as a Xero replacement.
Dext is for you if you are a small business owner drowning in receipts and supplier invoices, a sole trader who wants a defensible record for the ATO without a shoebox, or — most of all — a bookkeeper or tax agent running data capture across a book of clients. For that last group it is close to an industry standard.
Dext is not for you if you have a handful of transactions a month (your accounting software's built-in capture may be enough), or you want a tool that does the whole bookkeeping job end to end. Dext feeds the ledger; it isn't the ledger.
A note on the name: if your bookkeeper still calls it "Receipt Bank," that's Dext. Receipt Bank launched in 2010, rebranded to Dext in 2021, and the products you'll hear named — Dext Prepare (capture), Dext Precision (data health), Dext Commerce (e-commerce) — are now folding into one platform (Dext — The new Dext, formerly Receipt Bank).
What Dext is
Dext is a bookkeeping-automation platform built around AI-powered data capture. You get a document into Dext one of several ways — snap it in the mobile app, forward it to a dedicated email address, drag-and-drop a PDF, or pull it in through the Chrome extension and supplier connections — and Dext's OCR and AI read the key fields: supplier, date, total, tax, and increasingly line items. It categorises the transaction, applies your rules, and publishes it to your accounting software, where it sits ready to reconcile against the bank feed.
The company is UK-headquartered and global in reach: Dext says over 700,000 businesses and 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms worldwide use it (Dext — The new Dext). It won Xero's 2024 Small Business App Partner of the Year in both the UK and US awards (Dext — unified platform page; Dext on the Xero App Store). On Xero's Australian app marketplace it carries a 4.8 rating from more than 1,000 reviews.
What you actually get is four things working together: multi-channel capture (app, email, drag-drop, extension); AI extraction and categorisation that Dext markets at "99.9% accuracy"; rules and automation — supplier rules, auto-categorisation, auto-publish, supplier-statement reconciliation; and integrations with 36+ accounting solutions including Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks (Dext — partner pricing). On top of that sit newer pieces: AI Assist, a bookkeeping AI agent that suggests the everyday coding decisions; Vault document storage; and Dext Commerce for e-commerce sales data.
What it costs in Australia
This is where Dext earns Australian points: it publishes prices in AUD, not converted US dollars. The figures below are taken directly from Dext's Australian pricing pages. GST is excluded from every headline price, so add 10% at checkout.
For businesses
| Plan | Price (AUD, ex GST) | What you get |

| Business (annual) | $403/year (billed annually) | Same as above, "save 20%" versus monthly |
| AI Assist (add-on) | $15/mo until 31 October | Bookkeeping AI agent that automates routine coding decisions |
| Commerce Lite (add-on) | From $10/mo | Connect up to 5 e-commerce platforms, auto-import transactions |

For accountants and bookkeepers (practice plans)
| Plan | Price (AUD, ex GST) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | From $23.40 per client/month ($468 total at 10-client minimum) | Capture, process and manage bookkeeping for clients; ABN extraction/validation, supplier rules, auto-publish, 36+ integrations; 10-client minimum; annual subscription billed monthly |
| Advanced | From $27.40 per client/month ($548 total at 10-client minimum) | Everything in Essentials plus approvals, line-item extraction & groupings, document auto-split, expense management, smart practice workflows, team/location management, practice insights; 10-client minimum |
| AI Assist (add-on) | $10 per client | Core and custom guidance for the bookkeeping agent |
| Data Health & Insights (add-on) | $10/client/month | Data quality checks, client health scores, practice dashboards (formerly Dext Precision) |
| Commerce Lite (add-on) | $10/client/month | Marketplace integrations (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.) |
Source: dext.com/au/partner/pricing, checked 2 June 2026. Practice pricing is set on a per-client slider with a 10-client minimum and a stated "from" rate per plan; the annual subscription (billed monthly) carries a 13% discount versus monthly. Heavier client counts can attract a tailored "build your plan" quote, so confirm your exact per-client rate at sign-up.
Value verdict: For a business, AUD$33.58/month (about $37 with GST) buys back the hours you'd otherwise spend keying receipts — for most operators with a steady flow of invoices, that maths works inside the first month. The watch-out is the document cap: the entry plan covers 250 documents and 5 users, and heavier volume slides the price up, so price it against your real monthly document count, not the headline. For a bookkeeping practice, the per-client model is the genuinely strong play — it scales with your book and the data-health tooling is the kind of thing that pays for itself by catching errors before the BAS. AI Assist at $15/month (business) is promotional until 31 October; budget for it to change after that.
How it works in practice
The core loop is genuinely simple. You photograph a receipt at the counter, or set up a forwarding address so supplier invoices land in Dext automatically, and within a minute or two the document appears as a draft transaction with the supplier, date, total and GST already filled in. You glance at it, fix anything the AI got wrong, and publish to Xero or MYOB. Set up supplier rules once — "anything from this petrol station is fuel, GST claimable" — and most documents from that supplier publish themselves from then on.
For Australians, two details matter. Dext extracts and validates the ABN on a document, which helps you confirm a supplier is who they say they are and that GST is being charged correctly — a step most US-built capture tools skip entirely. And it reads GST as a discrete field rather than lumping it into the total, which is the difference between a clean BAS and a manual fix.
The newer layer is AI Assist, pitched as a bookkeeping agent that learns your coding patterns and proposes the routine decisions — which account, which tax code — so the human is reviewing suggestions rather than starting from scratch. It is an add-on, and like all such agents it is a suggestion engine, not an oracle: useful for volume, still wrong sometimes, and never a substitute for a set of eyes before publish.
That is the honest centre of any review of a capture tool. The "99.9% accuracy" headline is Dext's own marketing figure, not an independently audited result, and your real-world experience depends on what you feed it. Crisp PDF invoices read almost perfectly. Faded thermal dockets, handwritten amounts, foreign layouts and crumpled receipts are where OCR still trips — a misread date, a transposed total, GST claimed on a GST-free item. None of this makes Dext bad; it makes it software. The discipline that keeps you out of trouble is the same as it ever was: review before you publish, and reconcile against the bank feed.
What it does well
- Genuinely fast capture. Snap, forward or drag a document and it's a coded draft in Xero or MYOB minutes later. The time saved on data entry is real and immediate.
- Strong Australian fit on the things that matter. AUD pricing on the page, ABN extraction and validation, GST read as its own field. It behaves like a tool that knows Australia exists.
- Built for multi-client practices. Per-client pricing, supplier rules, approvals, line-item extraction and data-health scoring make it the default capture layer for a lot of Australian bookkeeping firms.
- Deep integration with the software Australians actually use. Xero (4.8 on the AU app marketplace), MYOB, QuickBooks and 36+ others, with bank-feed reconciliation downstream.
- Mature, well-rated and well-backed. 700,000+ businesses, 12,000+ firms, 15 years of history from Receipt Bank to today, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, AES-256 encryption at rest, annual third-party penetration testing.
What it doesn't do well
- The accuracy claim is the vendor's, and you still have to check. "99.9%" is Dext's own marketing number, not an audited benchmark. OCR misreads faded, handwritten and oddly formatted documents. Every published transaction needs a human glance — the AI does not absolve you of getting the books right.
- No advertised Australian data residency. Dext hosts on AWS and is ISO 27001 certified, but it does not advertise an Australian hosting region. The information-security page was last updated August 2024 and names no AU region (Dext — Information security). For firms with client-confidentiality or data-sovereignty obligations, ask Dext where AU customer data is stored before you commit.
- GST is excluded from every headline price. Add 10%. The "$33.58" is really about $37 landed, and the per-client practice rates are ex-GST too.
- Document caps and add-on creep. The entry business plan is 250 documents and 5 users; volume pushes the price up, and the useful extras — AI Assist, Vault beyond 100MB, Commerce, data health — are paid add-ons that stack.
- Promotional pricing on AI Assist. The $15/month business rate is "until 31 October." Treat the headline AI price as temporary and budget for a change.
- It's a layer, not a system. Dext only earns its keep if you're already running Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks. On its own it does not do your bookkeeping.
Australian fit

- GST: Excluded from all headline prices; expect 10% added at checkout. Confirm your invoice is a compliant tax invoice for your BAS.
- ABN handling: Extracts and validates ABNs from documents — a real AU-specific feature most overseas rivals lack. (dext.com/au/partner/pricing)
- Data residency: None advertised. Hosted on AWS, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, annual pen testing. No stated AU region — verify with Dext if data sovereignty matters. (dext.com/au/information-security)
- Accounting integrations: Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks and 36+ others — the AU mainstays are covered. (dext.com/au/partner/pricing)
- Local AU support: Dext has an Australian presence — a registered office at Suite 9.02, Level 9, 1 Castlereagh Street, Sydney NSW 2000 — and lists support@dext.com plus a Help Centre as the support channels, with a partner/account-management model for practices. No dedicated AU phone line or published AU support hours appear on the site; support is email and in-app. (dext.com/au/contact-us)
Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026). If a registered tax or BAS agent runs Dext's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. Our explainer of the guidance.
Alternatives
| App | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| Hubdoc | Owned by Xero and included free with most Xero plans. If you're a light Xero user, you may already be paying for it — fewer rules and less automation than Dext, but hard to beat on price. |
| MYOB native capture (In-tray / Capture app) | If you're on MYOB, the built-in document capture may cover a low-volume business without a separate subscription. Less powerful, but no extra tool to manage. |
| AutoEntry | A direct Dext rival (owned by Sage) for receipt, invoice and statement capture, often priced on a credit/per-document model that can suit lumpy volumes. |
| Booke AI | A newer AI-first challenger that runs an "AI bookkeeper" inside QuickBooks Online and Xero rather than feeding them — daily bank-feed categorisation, document matching and reconciliation. It's available in Australia (it runs a dedicated AU site and bills in AUD), priced at A$179/business/month with firm pricing by request and white-label on offer. Worth a look for practices that want more agent-style automation, though it's US-based (Delaware) and less established in Australia than Dext. (booke.ai/en-au/pricing) |
Bottom line
For an Australian small business already on Xero or MYOB, Dext is an easy recommendation and probably the cheapest hour-for-hour productivity buy in your finance stack. It bills in real dollars, it understands ABNs and GST, and it turns the worst admin job in the business — receipts — into something that mostly handles itself. For a bookkeeping or tax practice, it is closer to essential: the per-client pricing and data-health tooling are built for exactly that workflow, which is why so many Australian firms already run it.
It scores 19 rather than higher for honest reasons. The "99.9% accuracy" is the vendor's own claim and the OCR still needs human review — important to say plainly in a finance tool, where a misread total or a wrongly claimed GST credit is your problem, not Dext's. There's no advertised Australian data residency. And the headline price hides GST, document caps and a stack of paid add-ons. None of that is disqualifying; all of it is worth knowing before you sign up.
One firm caveat for this category: Dext is a data-capture tool, not a tax adviser. It does not replace a qualified accountant or BAS agent, and it does not make you any less accountable for the accuracy of what's filed. The AI extracts; you — and your accountant — remain responsible for the return.
We'd expect to refresh this review inside six months. AI Assist pricing changes after 31 October, the platform is actively consolidating its older products, and data residency is the area most likely to move. We'll flag any material change in the monitor.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Real AUD pricing from $33.58/mo and per-client practice plans that scale; document caps, GST-exclusive headlines and add-on creep keep it off a 5 |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Snap-forward-publish loop is genuinely simple and an owner gets value on day one; rules setup and reviewing OCR errors take some learning |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Multi-channel capture, rules, approvals, line items, data health, AI Assist, 36+ integrations; it's a capture layer, not a full ledger, which caps the criterion |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | AUD billing, ABN extraction/validation, GST as a discrete field, Xero/MYOB/QuickBooks support; no advertised AU data residency holds it back |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | ISO 27001, AES-256, annual pen testing, 700k+ businesses, 4.8 on the Xero AU marketplace, and a Sydney registered office; offset by email/in-app-only support with no published AU phone hours and an Aug-2024 security page |
| Total | 19/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |

Frequently asked questions
Is Dext available in Australia?
Yes. Dext runs dedicated Australian business and practice pricing pages, a 14-day free trial, and has a registered office at Suite 9.02, Level 9, 1 Castlereagh Street, Sydney. Support is email and in-app, with no published AU phone hours.
Does Dext charge in AUD?
Yes — genuine Australian dollar pricing, not a converted US figure. From $33.58/month for a business, with GST excluded from every headline price, so add 10% at checkout. It also extracts and validates ABNs and reads GST as its own field, which most overseas rivals don't.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, a 14-day free trial. There's no permanent free tier — Dext is a paid layer on top of your accounting software. For most operators with a steady flow of invoices, the time saved pays for it within the first month.
Is my data stored in Australia?
No advertised Australian region. Dext hosts on AWS and is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified with AES-256 encryption, but names no AU hosting location. For firms with data-sovereignty obligations, ask Dext where AU customer data is stored before committing.
Who is Dext best for?
A small business already on Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks that's drowning in receipts, or — most of all — a bookkeeping practice running capture across many clients. It's not for businesses with only a few transactions a month, and it feeds the ledger rather than being one.
