Yotpo vs Rebuy Australia 2026: Where Retention Budget Wins

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Yotpo. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Verdict (TL;DR): These tools pull different levers on the same problem. Yotpo builds social proof and repeat custom — reviews, loyalty and SMS in one suite. Rebuy lifts average order value with AI upsells and cross-sells at the point of purchase. A store that needs trust and repeat buyers starts with Yotpo. A store with traffic that already converts, chasing more per order, adds Rebuy. Most Australian Shopify merchants get more from Yotpo first. Both bill in US dollars, and neither has an Australian data region.

Yotpo: 18/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good. Rebuy: 16/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.

The tension

You have a fixed retention budget and one Shopify store. The revenue problem is the same either way: turn more of your traffic into money, and more of your buyers into repeat buyers. Yotpo and Rebuy both promise to help, but they attack from opposite ends.

Yotpo works the trust-and-repeat side. It collects reviews, runs a loyalty programme, sends SMS, and stitches the post-purchase relationship together. Its job is to make a first-time visitor believe you, and a first-time buyer come back.

Rebuy works the basket. It sits at the cart, the checkout and the thank-you page, using AI to suggest the next product. Its job is narrow and measurable: make each order bigger.

The mistake is treating them as competitors. They are not really fighting for the same slot — one grows repeat purchase rate, the other grows average order value. But budget is finite, and most Australian stores can only justify one at a time. This piece settles which one goes first.

Both reviews live on this site already. We are not re-scoring here — see the Yotpo review and the Rebuy review for the full workings. This piece decides where an Australian merchant should spend.

What it costs in Australia

Start here, because it shapes the decision more than the feature lists do. Both platforms bill in US dollars. Neither offers AUD billing. You wear the conversion and any foreign-transaction fee your card adds. We convert at roughly US$1.00 = A$1.40.

The two price very differently. Rebuy publishes an order-scaled "build your own plan." Yotpo does not publish a flat price list at all — its paid tiers are quoted by monthly order volume through its pricing page or sales team, so the figures below reflect what each vendor documents rather than a like-for-like table.

Plan Yotpo (USD) Yotpo (~AUD ÷1.40) Rebuy (USD) Rebuy (~AUD ÷1.40)
Free tier Reviews free tier (basic collection, low order volume) A$0 Monetize (free; post-purchase affiliate offers) A$0
Entry paid Quoted by order volume — no flat public price — Build Your Own Plan from US$25/mo from ~A$35/mo
Full suite Loyalty + Subscriptions priced separately, largely quote-based — Platform One US$534/mo (base; varies by order volume) ~A$748/mo

A few things this table hides.

Yotpo's free Reviews tier is a genuine starting point, not a marketing ploy — it covers basic review collection for low order volumes. But the paid Reviews, Loyalty and Subscriptions products are billed separately, and running the full suite becomes a substantial monthly line item for a mid-to-large retailer. Yotpo does not publish a simple flat price, so you must confirm your exact cost by order volume before budgeting.

Rebuy's entry is cheap and transparent, from US$25/mo (~A$35), but the per-order model means the fee climbs with your order volume — its own pricing calculator runs from 250 to 50,000 orders a month. The tool gets more expensive precisely as you succeed.

Both scale with success, but differently. Yotpo's cost rises as you add products (Loyalty, Subscriptions) and order volume. Rebuy's rises purely with orders. Neither headline figure is the figure you keep paying.

GST: both are foreign digital service providers. Whether the 10% GST is added or remitted depends on each vendor's ABN/GST registration under the ATO's imported-digital-services rules — GST-registered businesses providing an ABN are generally not charged the GST on imported digital services. Check your invoice; don't assume the headline figure is the final figure.

The honest read: Rebuy is cheaper and clearer to start. Yotpo's free Reviews tier costs nothing but its full suite is a bigger, murkier commitment. Price alone favours Rebuy at the entry point — but price-per-lever is the wrong lens. The right question is which lever your store needs pulled first.

Feature difference

The two do genuinely different jobs. This is where the "different levers" framing earns its keep.

Capability Yotpo Rebuy
Core job Social proof + repeat purchase Higher average order value
Reviews & ratings Yes — collection, photo/video, AI "Smart Sorting", AI summaries, Google syndication No
Loyalty & rewards Yes — points, VIP tiers, referrals No
Subscriptions Yes — recurring billing No
SMS / post-purchase messaging Reviews-request and loyalty messaging (standalone SMS product retired) No
Cart / checkout upsells No Yes — AI-driven, tunable with margin rules
Post-purchase one-click upsell No Yes — the thank-you-page slot most stores underuse
Attribution reporting Revenue driven by reviews and loyalty Attributed upsell revenue per placement
Platform Shopify + broader e-commerce Shopify only
Scope Broad suite, several products Narrow specialist, one job

Yotpo is a suite. Its strength is consolidation: one Shopify integration covers reviews, loyalty, referrals and subscriptions, potentially replacing several separate tools. Its AI is solid but modular — each product area has its own AI rather than a single coherent layer tying all the data together. As our review put it, "the platform's real value is consolidation — one integration instead of several separate tools."

Rebuy is a scalpel. It owns three moments — the cart, the checkout, and the one-click post-purchase offer — better than Shopify's native "you may also like" block, and layers tunable AI over rule-based controls. The reason our review scored it 4/5 on Feature Depth but 16/25 overall is scope: "it does order value brilliantly and nothing else."

The deciding practical difference is measurability. Rebuy hands you the receipt — its attribution reporting shows exactly what each upsell placement earned, so you can decide on numbers during the 14-day trial. Yotpo's value is real but more diffuse: the lift from social proof and a loyalty programme shows up across your store over months, not in a single clean line.

Australian fit

This is the criterion that separates the scores, and it is where both tools show their US origins.

Yotpo — Australian Fit 3/5. Yotpo is used by many Australian DTC and Shopify merchants, particularly for reviews, so there is no compatibility hurdle. The friction is commercial and legal. It bills in USD with no AUD option, and customer reviews and loyalty data are processed on US servers with no Australian region — disclose that in your privacy policy. Two compliance watch-outs are specific to what Yotpo does: its review-request emails fall under the Spam Act 2003, so you need consent and a working unsubscribe; and Australian loyalty programmes are subject to the Competition and Consumer Act and state gift-card laws, while Yotpo's defaults are US-designed. None of that is disqualifying, but it is more surface area to get right than a pure upsell tool carries. (This is not legal advice — speak to a solicitor for your circumstances.)

Rebuy — Australian Fit 2/5. Rebuy runs inside the same Shopify admin every Australian store uses, so the functional fit is fine. The score is lower on the commercial and data picture: USD-only billing with no AUD option, no clean GST line to reconcile against a BAS, support on US hours, and a privacy notice confirming personal information is "sent to and stored on servers located in the United States" with no Australian region. The saving grace is the low sensitivity of what it handles — which products sell together, what a shopper added to a cart — so the data-residency stakes are lower than a finance or health tool would carry.

The gate. Neither tool clears the Australian Fit gate (which requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5), so neither can be named a category Top Pick regardless of its raw score. Both are capped in that respect — see our Methodology. On Australian fit specifically, Yotpo's 3/5 edges Rebuy's 2/5, chiefly because Yotpo at least has an AUD-free entry point that a small store can actually use, and a broader Australian install base.

GST, both: treated as imported digital services. GST-registered businesses providing an ABN are generally not charged the 10% GST; verify on each invoice.

Who buys which

This is not a knockout — both are genuinely Very Good tools doing different jobs. The answer turns on what your store needs next.

Buy Yotpo first if you are still building trust and repeat custom. If shoppers don't yet believe you, reviews are the highest-leverage fix, and Yotpo's free Reviews tier lets you start at no cost. If you want repeat buyers, its loyalty and referral programmes are the mechanism. For most Australian Shopify stores — especially newer DTC brands — this is the more foundational lever, and the free entry point removes the risk of starting.

Buy Rebuy first if your traffic already converts and your reviews are already healthy, and the gap is order size. If you have volume and want more margin per basket, Rebuy's cart, checkout and post-purchase upsells are purpose-built for exactly that, and the attribution reporting makes the return checkable during the trial. It is a growth-stage add-on, not a foundation.

Buy neither yet if you are a small store still finding your feet on both fronts. Start with Shopify's native reviews and recommendations, prove the store converts, then add the specialist that fixes your actual bottleneck.

The winner for the typical Australian buyer: Yotpo. For the median Australian Shopify merchant — a growing store that still needs to earn trust and bring buyers back — social proof and loyalty are the more foundational levers, and Yotpo's genuinely free Reviews tier lets you start without a USD commitment. Its 18/25 reflects broader value and a slightly better Australian fit than Rebuy's 16/25. Rebuy is the sharper tool, and the better second purchase once your store already converts and you are chasing order value — but as the first place a fixed retention budget goes, Yotpo wins for most.

Neither clears the Australian Fit gate, so neither is our category Top Pick — for that, see the category roundup.

Frequently asked questions

Are Yotpo and Rebuy competitors?

Not really. They pull different levers on the same revenue problem. Yotpo builds social proof and repeat purchases through reviews, loyalty and SMS. Rebuy lifts average order value through AI upsells at the cart, checkout and thank-you page. Many stores eventually run both.

Which is cheaper in Australia?

Rebuy is cheaper and clearer to start — a free Monetize tier and a build-your-own plan from US$25/mo (~A$35). Yotpo's Reviews tier is free too, but its full Loyalty and Subscriptions suite is quote-based and becomes a larger, less transparent commitment. Both bill in USD only.

Does either offer AUD billing or Australian data storage?

No, on both counts. Both bill in US dollars with no AUD option, and both store customer data on US servers with no Australian region. Neither clears our Australian Fit gate, so neither can be a category Top Pick.

Which should an Australian Shopify store buy first?

For most, Yotpo. Social proof and repeat custom are usually the more foundational lever, and the free Reviews tier removes the risk of starting. Add Rebuy later, once your store already converts and the goal shifts to squeezing more value from each order.
