Verdict (TL;DR): Semrush is the heavyweight SEO platform, and in 2026 it has wrapped AI around nearly every part of it. The standout is the AI Visibility Toolkit — it tracks whether your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, which is a real question for any business right now. Around it sit Copilot (a free AI assistant that flags priority SEO tasks), ContentShake AI (turns a keyword into a draft article), and AI-assisted keyword clustering and content scoring. The tools are good. The catch for Australians is the bill: Semrush charges in US dollars only, with GST added on top (you do get a proper ABN tax invoice), and your data sits in US data centres with no Australian hosting option. The base Pro plan is US$139.95/month (≈ AUD$196 before GST), and the AI Visibility Toolkit is another US$99/month on top unless you buy the bundled Semrush One. For a serious marketing team it earns its keep. For a sole operator who just wants AI content help, it's expensive and US-centric. Capable, but not the AU-friendly pick.

What Semrush is

Semrush is a marketing and SEO platform that's been around since 2008, and it's one of the deepest tools in the category — keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audits, backlink data, content tools and advertising research, all in one login. It's a serious bit of kit used by agencies and in-house marketing teams worldwide.

What's changed in 2026 is the AI layer. Semrush has stitched AI features through the platform and built a whole new product line around the question every marketer is now asking: is my brand showing up when people ask an AI assistant instead of Googling? That's the AI Visibility Toolkit, and it's the genuinely new thing here.

The AI features that matter today (not roadmap):

  • AI Visibility Toolkit — tracks how often your brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with prompt tracking, share-of-voice and sentiment, and competitive comparison.
  • Copilot — an AI assistant that reads across your Semrush data and surfaces priority tasks, anomalies and recommendations. It's included free with paid plans.
  • ContentShake AI — a standalone AI writer that turns a keyword or topic into a publish-ready draft, with brand-voice settings and SEO scoring baked in.
  • SEO Writing Assistant and AI content optimisation — real-time scoring for readability, SEO and tone as you draft, plus suggestions for "AI search readiness".
  • AI-assisted keyword clustering, intent classification and traffic forecasting inside the core SEO toolkit.

That's a real spread of AI, not a single bolted-on chatbot. The question for an Australian buyer is whether the value clears the price and the friction.

What it costs in Australia

This is where Semrush lands awkwardly for Australians. It bills in US dollars only — there's no native AUD option — and GST is added on top of the USD price, not included in it. The one consolation: Semrush does collect Australian GST at 10% and issues invoices showing your ABN, so it's a clean, claimable tax invoice. You just can't pay in your own currency.

The platform now sells one ladder: an entry SEO plan, then three SEO + AI Search tiers (the former Semrush One bundles) that fold AI visibility tracking in with the SEO tools. The old Guru and Business plans are gone.

Plan Price (USD/month, GST added) Approx AUD before GST (≈1.40) What you get
Free $0 $0 Limited: a handful of daily searches, 10 tracked keywords, one project — a taster, not a working tool
SEO (formerly Pro) US$139.95 (US$117.33 billed annually) ≈ AUD$196 Core SEO toolkit: keyword research, rank tracking (500 keywords), site audit, competitor and backlink data, 5 websites. Copilot included
AI Visibility Toolkit (add-on) US$99 ≈ AUD$139 1 domain, 25 tracked prompts; tracks ChatGPT/Gemini/Perplexity/Google AI. Each extra domain or user is another US$99
Content Toolkit (formerly ContentShake AI) US$60 ≈ AUD$84 Unlimited AI articles, 100 content ideas, brand voice, multi-language. Sold separately from the SEO plans
Starter (SEO + AI Search) US$199 (US$165.17 billed annually) ≈ AUD$279 The SEO plan plus AI visibility tracking (50 prompts, 1 domain); cheaper than buying the SEO plan and the US$99 toolkit separately
Pro+ / Advanced (SEO + AI Search) US$299 / US$549 (US$248.17 / US$455.67 billed annually) ≈ AUD$419 / AUD$769 Pro+ adds 100 tracked prompts, 1,500 keywords and 15 monitored sites; Advanced adds 200 prompts, 5,000 keywords, 40 sites and API access

Pricing re-read in a browser on 29 September 2026 from Semrush's own pricing pages (SEO + AI Search and Content) and its AI Visibility Toolkit knowledge-base article. Annual billing saves roughly 16–17% across paid tiers. AUD conversions are approximate at 1.40 and exclude the 10% GST Semrush adds at checkout.

Value verdict: For an agency or a marketing team that lives in this data daily, Semrush is worth the money — nothing else combines this depth of SEO with the new AI Visibility tracking. But the costs stack fast. A sole trader who just wants AI to help write blog posts does not need a US$140 SEO platform — the Content Toolkit at US$60, or a cheaper dedicated writer, makes more sense. And the AI Visibility Toolkit at US$99 for a single domain and 25 prompts is a premium price for what is still an early product category.

How it works in practice

The AI Visibility Toolkit is the part worth the trip. You point it at your domain and a set of prompts — the kinds of questions a customer might type into ChatGPT — and it reports back how often your brand appears in the AI answers, alongside your competitors, with a sentiment read. For an Australian business watching organic traffic soften as people ask assistants instead of searching, that's a real, answerable question, and Semrush answers it better than most. The honest limit: the base US$99 tier gives you one domain and just 25 tracked prompts, so you'll burn through that quickly and the upsell to more prompts and domains is steep.

Copilot is the quiet win, because it's free with every paid plan. It reads across your projects and surfaces a short list of "do this next" items — a drop in rankings, a broken audit item, a content gap — instead of leaving you to hunt through a dozen reports. It won't replace an SEO specialist, but for a busy operator it turns a sprawling platform into a to-do list.

ContentShake AI does what the category does: feed it a keyword and it drafts an SEO-shaped article you then edit. It's competent and the SEO scoring is the differentiator, but the output still needs an Australian human to fix the tone and the spelling — it defaults to US English and US framing, and it won't know a thing about your local market unless you tell it.

The core SEO toolkit underneath all of this remains the real reason most people pay Semrush. The AI features make it faster to use; they aren't, on their own, the reason to buy.

What it does well

  • AI Visibility tracking that answers a 2026 question. Whether you show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers — measured, tracked over time, compared to competitors. Genuinely useful and ahead of most rivals.
  • Copilot is free and actually helpful. An AI assistant that turns a huge platform into a prioritised task list, included with every paid plan at no extra cost.
  • The deepest SEO data in the category. Keyword, competitor, backlink and site-audit data that agencies have trusted for years — the AI sits on top of a strong foundation.
  • A proper ABN tax invoice. Semrush collects Australian GST at 10% and issues invoices showing your ABN, so the spend is clean and claimable.
  • One platform, not ten subscriptions. SEO, content, advertising and AI visibility under a single login, which is the whole pitch.

What to watch out for

  • USD billing only, GST on top. No native AUD pricing. You pay a US-dollar amount that moves with the exchange rate, and 10% GST is added at checkout rather than included.
  • No Australian data residency. Semrush stores data in US data centres only (AWS, GCP, Digital Realty). There's no AU hosting region. Fine for most marketing data; a consideration for a regulated organisation.
  • No SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP advertised. The security page lists PCI DSS Level 1 and GDPR adherence, but none of the certifications an Australian enterprise procurement team usually asks for.
  • Support runs on US hours. Phone support is US business hours (Eastern time), which is the middle of the night in Australia. Live chat and a large knowledge base exist, but there's no AU office or local-hours line.
  • The add-ons stack up fast. AI Visibility is US$99 per domain, extra prompts and users cost more, and the Content Toolkit (formerly ContentShake AI) is a separate US$60. The headline plan price is rarely the real bill.
  • Outputs are US-default. ContentShake AI and the writing tools lean US English and US context unless you steer them — you'll be editing for an Australian audience.

Australian fit

  • Available in Australia: Yes — fully available, web-based, no regional lockout.
  • Pricing in AUD: No. USD only, no native AUD option. Approx AUD at 1.40: SEO plan ≈ A$196, Starter ≈ A$279, AI Visibility add-on ≈ A$139 — all before GST.
  • GST: Added on top (not included). Semrush collects Australian GST at 10% and issues an invoice showing your ABN — a claimable tax invoice, but GST lifts the real cost.
  • Data residency: None for Australia. US data centres only (AWS, GCP, Digital Realty); no AU hosting region.
  • Certifications: PCI DSS Level 1 and GDPR adherence stated; no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP advertised.
  • Local support: None AU-specific. Knowledge base, live chat and US-hours phone support only.
  • AU-aware outputs: No. AI content tools default to US English and US context; expect to edit for an Australian audience.

Alternatives

Tool Why you might prefer it
Ahrefs The other SEO heavyweight — many find its backlink data and interface cleaner. Also USD-billed, so no AU pricing advantage, but worth comparing on core SEO.
Content Toolkit alone (US$60/mo) If you only want AI help writing SEO content and don't need the full platform, buy this on its own rather than a US$140 SEO plan.
A dedicated AI writer (e.g. Jasper, Copy.ai) If content generation is the whole job and SEO data isn't, a focused writer is cheaper and simpler.

Bottom line

Semrush in 2026 is a genuinely capable platform with real AI inside it, not a marketing veneer. The AI Visibility Toolkit answers a question every Australian business should be asking — am I showing up in the AI answers? — and Copilot, free with every plan, makes a sprawling tool usable. If you run an agency or an in-house marketing team and you already live in SEO data, this is a defensible buy.

But this is The AI Directory Australia, and on the things we weigh hardest it underperforms. There's no AUD pricing, GST is bolted on at checkout, your data sits in the US with no local hosting, support runs on American hours, and the AI outputs default to US English. For an Australian sole trader or small business that just wants AI to make marketing easier, it's expensive and built for someone else's market.

It scores 16 — Very Good, but no higher — because the product is strong while the Australian fit is weak. We'd recommend it to teams who need its depth and can absorb the USD-plus-GST cost. We would not call it the AU-friendly pick in this category. We'll refresh this if Semrush introduces AUD billing, an AU data region, or the local certifications enterprise buyers ask for.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 3/5 Deep platform that earns its keep for teams, but USD-plus-GST pricing and stacking add-ons (AI Visibility US$99, Content Toolkit US$60) make it expensive for small operators
Ease of Use 3/5 Copilot turns a huge, complex platform into a task list, but Semrush is still a lot of tool for a non-specialist to learn
Feature Depth 5/5 Among the deepest in the category — SEO, content, ads and the new AI Visibility tracking, with AI woven through
Australian Fit 2/5 USD-only billing, GST added on top, US-only data residency, US-hours support and US-default outputs. ABN tax invoice is the one local plus
Reliability & Support 3/5 Established platform with strong docs and live chat, but support is US-hours and there's no AU presence
Total 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush available in Australia?

Yes — fully available, web-based, with no regional lockout. There's no AU office, though, and support runs on US business hours (Eastern time), which is the middle of the night here.

Does Semrush charge in AUD?

No. Pricing is USD only, with no native AUD option, and 10% GST is added on top at checkout. The upside: Semrush issues a proper tax invoice showing your ABN, so the spend is clean and claimable. The entry SEO plan is US$139.95/month (about A$196 before GST), or US$117.33/month billed annually.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

Yes, but it's a taster, not a working tool — one demo project and 10 reports a day. Paid plans start at the SEO plan (US$139.95/mo). The AI Visibility Toolkit and the Content Toolkit (formerly ContentShake AI) are separate paid add-ons.

Does Semrush store data in Australia?

No. Data is stored in US data centres only (AWS, GCP, Digital Realty), with no Australian hosting region. The security page lists PCI DSS Level 1 and GDPR adherence but advertises no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP — relevant for enterprise procurement.

Who is Semrush best for?

Agencies and in-house marketing teams who live in SEO data daily — nothing else combines this depth with the new AI Visibility tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. A sole trader who just wants AI content help should buy the Content Toolkit alone or a cheaper writer instead.
