The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Yuma AI is the most capable AI customer support automation tool built specifically for Shopify e-commerce. It does not just draft replies — it takes actions, cancelling orders, issuing refunds, pausing subscriptions, and generating return labels autonomously. Published automation rates of 45–89% are plausible based on available case study evidence. The catch: it is expensive, opaque on pricing, requires a sales call to start, and only integrates with a limited set of helpdesks. Australian e-commerce brands using Gorgias or Zendesk with high ticket volumes should investigate it seriously. Everyone else should look elsewhere.

What Yuma AI is
Yuma AI was founded in 2022 by Guillaume Luccisano and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a Y Combinator W23 company — a cohort that selected the product at a time when AI-powered support automation for e-commerce was still a genuinely novel proposition.
The platform is not a general-purpose chatbot. It is purpose-built for one vertical: Shopify-centric e-commerce brands that need to automate high volumes of customer support tickets. It plugs into existing helpdesks — primarily Gorgias and Zendesk — and acts as an AI agent that reads incoming tickets, retrieves order data from Shopify, takes appropriate action, and sends replies, all without requiring a human for routine queries.
The actions it can take natively in Shopify include: issuing full or partial refunds, cancelling orders, generating return labels, editing shipping addresses, pausing or cancelling subscriptions, applying discount codes, and providing WISMO (Where Is My Order?) updates. There are more than 75 pre-built Shopify actions in the platform's Process Builder.
In September 2025 Yuma expanded into Sales AI (a product page Q&A widget that answers pre-purchase questions) and in January 2026 added Social AI (automated responses to Facebook and Instagram comments and DMs). These are newer product lines and are not the focus of this review, which covers the core support automation product.
What it costs in Australia
Yuma AI now publishes its pricing. Read in a browser on an Australian connection on 9 October 2026, yuma.ai/pricing shows three illustrative annual bundles — the June edition of this review recorded quote-only pricing and third-party estimates, and those estimates turn out to have been far too low. The model is outcome-based: you pay only for conversations Yuma fully resolves with no human touch, on a 12-month commitment paid up front, with the first 30 days free and no implementation fee. Every bundle is sized to your forecast after a demo, so the figures are the vendor's own illustrations, not a price list you can buy from.
Vendor figures, in US dollars (the page shows a bare $; Yuma is a Cambridge, Massachusetts company):
| Plan | Annual price (USD, paid up front) | Included resolutions a year | Cost per resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | US$14,400 (US$1,200 a month equivalent) | 12,000 | ~US$1.20; monthly plan adds US$1.50 per over-quota ticket |
| Growth | US$40,000 | ~48,000 | ~US$0.83; no overage fees on annual plans |
| Scale | US$90,000 | ~120,000 | ~US$0.75; past 120,000 a year the rate "keeps dropping toward the $0.55 floor" |
Converted at US$1 = A$1.44 (ECB reference rate via Frankfurter, 8 October 2026) and shown ex-GST — a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add about 10%:
| Plan | AUD approx. (ex-GST, 1.44) |
|---|---|
| Starter | ~A$20,700 a year (~A$1,730 a month) |
| Growth | ~A$57,600 a year (~A$4,800 a month) |
| Scale | ~A$129,600 a year (~A$10,800 a month) |
These are the vendor's illustrative bundles, read 9 October 2026 (capture Dossiers/captures/yuma-ai-pricing-2026-10-09.txt); your bundle is sized to your ticket forecast, so confirm the number on your quote. For the record, the June edition's third-party estimate was US$295–350 a month for about 500 resolutions — roughly a quarter of the published Starter bundle.
Outcome-based pricing model: You pay only for tickets the AI fully resolves without human intervention. If Yuma handles 400 out of 500 tickets this month, you pay for 400 resolutions. In principle, this aligns incentives well. In practice, "fully resolved" requires careful definition in your contract — confirm what counts as a resolution and how edge cases are handled before signing.
ROI guarantee: Yuma offers a 100% ROI guarantee — if your automation savings do not exceed the monthly fee, you pay nothing. Confirm the exact terms and measurement methodology during the sales process.
Free trial: A 30-day free trial on live tickets is available, but it requires completing a demo and onboarding process first. You cannot self-serve or trial the product without speaking to sales.
How it works in practice
Setup is not self-serve. After the demo and sales call, Yuma's onboarding team works with you to configure the AI — connecting your Gorgias or Zendesk account, integrating with your Shopify store, defining your policies (return window, refund criteria, shipping rules), and building the action workflows. Expect days to weeks of configuration before the AI is handling live tickets.
Once live, Yuma reads incoming tickets, identifies the intent (refund request, order status check, subscription cancellation, etc.), matches it to a configured workflow, retrieves the relevant Shopify order data, takes the action, and sends a reply. Tickets the AI cannot resolve with high confidence are escalated to human agents with a draft reply pre-populated for review.
The accuracy focus is notable. Yuma's approach of narrowly scoping what the AI can ingest and act on — rather than giving it broad access to all knowledge — results in high accuracy on the tickets it does handle. Published case studies report 45–89% automation rates depending on the ticket mix. The variance is large because it depends almost entirely on how many of your tickets are routine (WISMO, returns, refunds) versus complex (custom issues, damaged goods claims, escalations).
A published case study from home goods brand Parachute Home reported an 18% lift in revenue per visitor from the Sales AI product page widget — though this is a different product line from the core support automation.
The platform handles tickets through Gorgias and Zendesk. It does not integrate with Intercom, Freshdesk, HubSpot Service Hub, or most other helpdesks. If your team does not use Gorgias or Zendesk, Yuma will not work for you without switching helpdesks.
What it does well
Takes action, not just drafts. The difference between Yuma and most AI support tools is that Yuma actually does things in Shopify — cancels orders, issues refunds, generates return labels — rather than just writing a draft reply for a human to approve and execute. For high-volume Shopify stores, this is the meaningful distinction. A human reviewing 200 AI-drafted refund replies and clicking approve is not materially faster than a human handling tickets directly. Yuma eliminates the human in the loop for routine cases entirely.
Deep Shopify integration. Seventy-five-plus pre-built Shopify actions cover the bulk of e-commerce support scenarios. The integration is native and pulls live order, subscription, and customer data in real time.
Outcome-based pricing aligns incentives. You pay for resolved tickets, not software seats. If Yuma's automation rate drops, your bill drops proportionally. This is a fairer pricing model than per-seat SaaS for support teams.
High accuracy on scoped tasks. The narrow scoping approach (limiting the AI's knowledge access) produces high accuracy on supported ticket types. Some case studies report 98% accuracy on the ticket types Yuma is configured to handle.
Social AI expansion. The January 2026 Social AI product automates Facebook and Instagram comment responses and DM handling — a useful extension for Shopify brands running social commerce, though it is a newer product with less customer validation.
What it doesn't do well
Expensive, and now we know by how much. The published Starter bundle is US$14,400 a year paid up front — about A$1,730 a month — on a 12-month commitment, which puts Yuma out of reach for smaller Shopify stores. A business doing $500,000 AUD/year in revenue with 200 support tickets/month would be paying for 12,000 resolutions it cannot use; do careful ROI modelling before committing.
Requires a sales call to start anything. There is no self-serve trial. Every potential customer must complete a demo and onboarding before seeing the product live. For a busy Australian business owner evaluating tools, this is a friction barrier.
Limited helpdesk support. Gorgias and Zendesk only (plus some newer additions like Kustomer and Front). If you use Freshdesk, Intercom, or HubSpot, Yuma will not integrate. Given Gorgias's strong adoption among Shopify merchants globally, this covers a significant portion of the target market — but not all of it.
AI hallucination risk remains. Yuma acknowledges that the AI occasionally makes incorrect statements. For an agent that takes real actions (issuing refunds, cancelling orders), an incorrect action is not just a wrong reply — it is a financial transaction. Robust testing and configuration of confidence thresholds is essential before going fully autonomous.
Not for non-Shopify stores. Yuma's Shopify-native architecture means it has limited utility for businesses on Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or custom platforms. The tool does not serve general-purpose customer support.
Australian fit
Yuma AI is available in Australia. The Shopify App Store listing confirms Australian availability. Pricing is in USD — no AUD billing. GST applies as an imported digital service.
Yuma AI is particularly relevant for the Australian e-commerce market. Shopify is the dominant platform for Australian online retail, and the combination of high support ticket volumes during peak periods (Click Frenzy, Black Friday, Christmas) and the cost of Australian customer service staff makes automation economics compelling for stores doing meaningful volume.
Data residency: Yuma's headquarters are in Cambridge, Massachusetts. No Australian data residency is documented. Customer ticket data and Shopify order data processed by Yuma passes through US-based infrastructure. Review this against your Privacy Act obligations, particularly if you are handling health information or sensitive consumer data.
Privacy Act compliance: Australian businesses handling personal information must comply with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If Yuma processes your customers' personal information (names, addresses, order history), you need a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) with Yuma and must notify customers of offshore data processing in your privacy policy. Confirm DPA availability with Yuma during the sales process.
Spam Act note: Yuma's core product handles inbound customer support — it responds to messages initiated by customers. This is generally outside the scope of the Spam Act 2003, which covers unsolicited commercial messages. The Social AI product (automated Instagram/Facebook comment replies and DMs) may engage Spam Act considerations if it sends unsolicited promotional messages — confirm the implementation with Yuma and seek legal advice if using outbound social messaging.
Support: Yuma provides dedicated account management during onboarding. Ongoing support is documented in the help centre. No Australian phone or chat support is listed. Given the high-touch nature of the product, account management responsiveness should be confirmed during the sales process.
GST: Yuma does not appear to issue Australian GST-compliant tax invoices automatically. Raise this during the sales conversation if you require GST documentation for business expenses.
Australian Fit score: 3/5. Works with Australian Shopify stores, relevant to the AU e-commerce market, but USD pricing, US data residency, and no confirmed Australian Privacy Act DPA or local support.
Alternatives
Gorgias — Gorgias has its own AI agent (Gorgias AI) built into the helpdesk natively. For Shopify brands already on Gorgias, the native AI is worth evaluating before adding a third-party layer. Less autonomous than Yuma but simpler to implement.
Intercom Fin AI — strong AI support automation for businesses not locked into Shopify/Gorgias. More expensive at enterprise scale but integrates with more helpdesks and supports non-e-commerce use cases.
Tidio Lyro — significantly cheaper, self-serve, and suitable for smaller Shopify stores that want AI chat without the complexity or cost of Yuma. Less capable on autonomous actions.
Bottom line
Yuma AI is the most purpose-built AI support automation tool for Shopify e-commerce. If you are an Australian retailer on Shopify, using Gorgias or Zendesk, and handling hundreds or thousands of support tickets per month that are predominantly routine (order status, returns, refunds, cancellations), Yuma offers a credible path to automating 50–80% of your support queue without sacrificing quality.
The economics are the deciding factor. An Australian e-commerce brand paying $80,000/year for a two-person support team might find US$14,400 a year (about A$20,700) for the Starter bundle delivers meaningful ROI. A smaller store with 100 tickets/month will not.
The opacity on pricing, the mandatory sales process, and the Gorgias/Zendesk dependency are real friction points. But for the right business — high Shopify ticket volume, Gorgias or Zendesk already in place, motivated to reduce support headcount cost — Yuma earns a serious look.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 2/5 | Outcome-based pricing is fair in principle, but the published entry bundle is US$14,400 a year up front (~A$1,730 a month) — four times the estimate the June edition scored, and beyond most small stores; ROI compelling only for high-volume stores (down from 3 on 9 Oct 2026) |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Once configured, the AI handles tickets smoothly; initial setup requires dedicated onboarding and is not self-serve |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | 75+ Shopify actions; takes real actions not just drafts; Sales AI and Social AI expanding scope |
| Australian Fit | 3/5 | Works with AU Shopify stores; relevant to AU e-commerce market; USD pricing, US data, no confirmed AU Privacy Act DPA |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Strong case study performance data; hallucination risk on autonomous actions; account management during onboarding; no AU local support |
| Total | 15/25 | ⭐⭐⭐ Good |
Note: Australian Fit of 3/5 means Yuma AI cannot achieve an Excellent (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) rating under The AI Directory Australia's methodology, regardless of its overall score. Read our Methodology.
