Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Chatfuel has pivoted hard into AI-native chatbots via its Fuely product, powered by GPT-5-class models. For businesses wanting to automate lead capture, appointment booking, and FAQ handling on WhatsApp and Instagram without writing code, it works. But it is expensive relative to what you get, pricing is WhatsApp-heavy (so factor in Meta's extra message fees), the free plan is gone, and Australian businesses are on their own for Spam Act compliance. A solid choice for WhatsApp-first businesses that want deeper AI than ManyChat offers — but shop carefully before signing up.

What Chatfuel is

Chatfuel was founded in 2015 in San Francisco (Y Combinator W16) and built its early reputation as a Facebook Messenger bot builder. In 2026 it has reinvented itself around "Fuely AI" — its in-house AI agent built on OpenAI's GPT-5 models, trained on what the company says are 150 billion customer conversations.

The product now automates conversations across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, and a basic website widget. The pitch is a no-code AI agent that handles lead generation, FAQ responses, appointment booking, abandoned cart recovery, and post-purchase follow-ups. Chatfuel markets primarily to service businesses and e-commerce retailers wanting conversational automation without a developer.

It is a direct ManyChat competitor for Instagram and WhatsApp automation, though the two products have diverged: ManyChat is stronger on Instagram tooling, Chatfuel offers more AI depth but at a higher starting price.

What it costs in Australia

Chatfuel revamped its pricing in 2026, removing the old free plan and introducing two AI-tier products: Fuely Super (GPT-5 mini) and Fuely Max (full GPT-5).

All prices are in USD, and Chatfuel labels them US$ on the page rather than leaving a bare dollar sign. Chatfuel does not publish AUD pricing.

⚠ The pricing model changed between this review and 24 September 2026. It no longer sells two AI products priced by contact band. It sells one plan, plus an agency tier:

Plan List (USD/month, billed yearly) Billed yearly Approx AUD/month (ex-GST) Included
Business US$69 — ~A$97 US$20 of AI credits/month; WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and web widget; bulk campaigns; CRM sync
Agency S US$90 US$1,080/year ~A$126 US$100 of AI credits/month; 3 companies; agency dashboard; dedicated account manager
Enterprise / larger agency tiers Not published — — Contact Chatfuel

A promotion is running and it is not the price. The page currently shows Business at US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) against the struck-through US$69, badged "LIMITED OFFER · SAVE 74% · UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30". That ends six days from now. Budget on the US$69 list price; treat US$18 as a first-year saving if you buy before it lapses. Figures above were read on the Yearly billing toggle; the monthly-billing rates were not re-read.

Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. Every plan starts with a free trial; there is still no free plan.

Important: Meta's WhatsApp fees are additional. Chatfuel's subscription covers the platform and AI. Meta charges separately for WhatsApp template messages sent outside the 24-hour customer-initiated service window. As of 2026, Meta prices per template message delivered — not per conversation. Australian marketing message rates are (estimate) approximately $0.04–$0.06 USD per message. For a business sending 5,000 promotional WhatsApp messages a month, add roughly $200–$300 USD on top of the Chatfuel subscription.

No free plan. Chatfuel no longer offers a free tier. The cheapest entry point is $39 USD/month (~A$55 ex-GST) for 150 active contacts. This is the steepest floor price of the tools reviewed in this category.

Facebook/Instagram legacy pricing: Some third-party sources reference older $20/month Facebook/Instagram-only plans. Confirm current pricing directly with Chatfuel before purchasing, as the product line is in active transition.

How it works in practice

Chatfuel's visual flow builder lets you map out conversation trees with conditions, delays, and branching logic. The no-code interface is functional but more complex than ManyChat's — expect a steeper learning curve for non-technical users.

The Fuely AI engine integrates directly into flows. You can configure it to answer open-ended questions by feeding it a custom knowledge base (FAQs, product information, pricing), and it will respond conversationally when a customer asks something not covered by your pre-built buttons. Fuely Super (GPT-5 mini) handles routine queries accurately; Fuely Max (full GPT-5) is built for more complex multi-turn reasoning, but most SMBs will not need the upgrade.

When the AI cannot resolve a query or the customer asks for a human, the handoff to live chat is handled inside Chatfuel's shared inbox. Multiple agents can manage conversations simultaneously. This hybrid — AI for routine queries, human for edge cases — is the practical value proposition.

For WhatsApp specifically, Chatfuel supports broadcast messaging, drip campaigns, and template message automation. It is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider (BSP), meaning it provides the API access directly — you do not need a separate third-party BSP account.

What it does well

Genuine AI conversation depth. Fuely's knowledge-base integration lets the bot answer questions it was not explicitly programmed for. This is materially more useful than ManyChat's single-response AI step. A plumbing business, for example, can upload a FAQ document and let Fuely handle "do you do hot water systems?" without pre-mapping the answer.

WhatsApp-first architecture. Chatfuel is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, simplifying setup — you apply for WhatsApp Business API access through Chatfuel rather than coordinating with a separate BSP. This reduces one point of friction for businesses new to WhatsApp automation.

Multi-channel from one platform. WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, and a website widget are all included. Conversations from all channels appear in one inbox.

Integrations. Shopify, Kommo CRM, Google Sheets, Stripe, Calendly, Zapier, and REST API. Sufficient for most SMB use cases.

AI handoff to live chat is clean. The Fuely-to-human handoff is smooth, with context preserved. The shared inbox supports multiple agents and conversation assignment.

What it doesn't do well

No free plan, and the floor has risen. The old US$39/month band for 150 contacts is gone; the single Business plan lists at US$69/month (24 Sep 2026). That is difficult to justify for a business still evaluating whether WhatsApp automation makes sense. ManyChat offers at least a token free tier.

Pricing doubles for Max. Moving from Fuely Super to Fuely Max nearly doubles the cost at every contact tier. For 5,000 contacts: $279 vs. $549 USD/month. The full GPT-5 model is rarely necessary for standard FAQ and lead capture use cases.

Instagram tools are less polished than ManyChat's. ManyChat has invested more deeply in Instagram-specific automation (comment triggers, story replies, bio link flows). Chatfuel's Instagram tooling works but feels secondary to the WhatsApp focus.

Setup is not quick. Configuring Fuely's knowledge base, building flows, and testing WhatsApp templates takes meaningful time. A typical onboarding takes several hours. This is not a five-minute setup.

Support is not localised for Australia. No Australian phone or chat support. Help centre and email support only. Response times for lower tiers are not guaranteed.

Data processed offshore. Chatfuel's servers are based in the US. No Australian data residency. Chatfuel has GDPR compliance documentation but no specific Australian Privacy Act compliance documentation publicly available.

Australian fit

Chatfuel is available in Australia and supports Australian WhatsApp Business accounts. Pricing is USD only — you absorb exchange rate risk. GST applies as an imported digital service.

Australian Spam Act 2003 obligations — critical. Chatfuel is explicitly a platform for sending commercial electronic messages via WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, and SMS. Under the Spam Act 2003 (Cth), Australian businesses must:

  1. Obtain prior consent before sending any commercial electronic message. Express consent (the recipient actively opted in) is required for most marketing messages. Inferred consent applies only within a narrow existing commercial relationship directly relevant to the message.
  2. Clearly identify the sender in every message.
  3. Provide a simple, functional unsubscribe mechanism. Unsubscribe requests must be actioned within 5 business days.

Chatfuel does not automate Spam Act compliance. It provides opt-in tools (keyword triggers, landing pages, web widgets), but managing consent records and unsubscribe requests is your responsibility. The ACMA can impose fines of up to A$2.1 million for serious or repeated breaches.

WhatsApp consent is layered. Meta's WhatsApp Business Policy requires separate opt-in consent before sending marketing template messages, independent of the Spam Act. Chatfuel enforces Meta's policies — accounts that breach Meta's terms face suspension.

SMS Sender ID registration: If you use Chatfuel for SMS with an alphanumeric sender name, you must register with ACMA's Sender ID Register from 1 July 2026.

Data residency: US-based servers. No Australian data localisation. Review against your Privacy Act obligations before onboarding customer data at scale.

GST: As a USD-billed service, GST applies. Chatfuel does not issue Australian tax invoices automatically — check whether they provide GST documentation for your bookkeeping.

Australian Fit score: 2/5. Works in Australia but USD pricing, US data residency, no AU-specific consent tooling, no local support.

Alternatives

ManyChat — direct competitor; stronger Instagram tooling, cheaper entry point ($29 USD Pro plan), shallower AI. Better if Instagram is your primary channel.

Intercom Fin AI — more expensive but purpose-built for customer support resolution, not marketing automation. Better if you need to resolve inbound queries at scale, not just capture leads.

Tidio Lyro — cheaper option for website chat and basic automation. Less WhatsApp-focused; better for small businesses that want a simple AI chat widget.

Bottom line

Chatfuel's Fuely AI is a meaningful step up from the previous generation of rule-based chatbot builders. The GPT-5 integration genuinely makes bots smarter, and the WhatsApp-first architecture simplifies API access. For a service business running appointment booking through WhatsApp, or an e-commerce retailer wanting automated order FAQ handling, Chatfuel delivers.

The problems are pricing and fit. $39 USD/month (~A$55) for 150 contacts is steep for a small business still testing the waters. WhatsApp message fees from Meta add unpredictable costs on top. And Australian Spam Act obligations require real work to implement — the platform will not do it for you.

If WhatsApp is your primary customer communication channel and you want AI-powered conversation depth rather than just buttons and scripts, Chatfuel is worth a trial. If Instagram is more important, ManyChat is the stronger choice. If you primarily want to resolve customer support tickets at scale, look at Intercom Fin or Gorgias instead.

Update history
  • 24 Sep 2026 — 2 Australian figures recut to the current basis. They were converted at about 1.70 — the retired basis — inside a column headed ex-GST whose other rows were already at 1.4045. Corrected to US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026): 5,000 ~A$475 → ~A$392; 5,000 ~A$935 → ~A$771. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
  • 24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 RE-CHECKED — the pricing model has been replaced, not adjusted. Read on chatfuel.com/pricing in a browser. This review priced two products by contact band — Fuely Super at $39/$69/$109/$279 for 150/500/1,000/5,000 contacts, Fuely Max at $139/$549 — and neither the products nor the bands are on the page. Chatfuel now sells one plan: Business, list US$69/month, plus Agency S at US$90/month (US$1,080/year). All superseded figures kept visible per our price-history rule. ⚠ A promotion is running and is not the price: Business shows US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) against a struck-through US$69, badged “LIMITED OFFER · SAVE 74% · UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30” — six days away. Per the Kling precedent it is recorded with its expiry and kept out of the price cell. The entry price went UP, by 77%: the smallest buyer used to start at US$39 and now starts at US$69 at list. Value for Money holds at 2/5 — the row already said “no free plan; floor steep”, both still true — but its figures are corrected. ⚠ And a name that was never right: the pricing section read “ManyChat does not publish AUD pricing” in the Chatfuel review — a copy-paste; the file's other ManyChat mentions are genuine competitor comparisons and are untouched. Chatfuel labels its prices US$ on the page, so the currency is the vendor's word, not our inference. verified: set; reviewed: untouched.
