The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): If you use a JetBrains IDE and have been envious of what Cursor offers VS Code users, Sweep is the most credible answer available. Its next-edit autocomplete is genuinely fast and accurate, the agent handles complex multi-file tasks, and 40,000+ developers have given it a 4.9-star rating on the JetBrains Marketplace. Pricing is usage-based and affordable. The limitations are real: it is JetBrains-only, code is processed on Sweep's own infrastructure (no self-hosting), and the company is US-based with no AU data residency option. A practical tool for Australian JetBrains developers; not the right call for teams with data sovereignty requirements.

Score: 15/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good

What Sweep is

Sweep AI started as a tool that turned GitHub issues into pull requests automatically — it would read a bug report or feature request, write the code, and open a PR. That original product still exists in the codebase and documentation, but Sweep has substantially pivoted. As of 2026, the product focus is entirely on being the premier AI coding assistant for JetBrains IDEs.

The pitch is direct: JetBrains developers have been underserved by AI coding tools. Cursor and Windsurf are VS Code forks. GitHub Copilot works in JetBrains but is widely considered inferior to what it offers VS Code users. Sweep was built specifically for IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, CLion, RubyMine, Android Studio, and the rest of the JetBrains family.

The product has two main capabilities:

Next-edit autocomplete. Sweep's custom fine-tuned Tab model predicts code changes in milliseconds. Unlike conventional autocomplete that completes the current line, next-edit autocomplete predicts what you will want to change next — not just at the cursor, but at the next logical edit location in the file. Press Tab and the completion appears.

AI agent. A full conversational agent that indexes your entire repository, understands architecture and dependencies, and executes multi-file changes. You describe what you want; the agent plans, writes, and delivers. It supports MCP server integration (including remote MCP servers with OAuth 2.0 support as of December 2025) and includes AI code review, inline editing, and AI-generated commit messages.

Sweep uses its own proprietary LLMs as well as major third-party models (Claude Opus 4.5, GPT-5.2, Gemini 3 Pro, and others). All models are configured for zero data retention according to Sweep's documentation. The company is SOC 2 compliant.

What it costs in Australia

Sweep's pricing is usage-based: you pay a monthly plan fee and receive that amount as API credits. Unlimited autocomplete (Tab completions) is included on all paid plans at no additional cost.

Individual plans (USD pricing, Sweep website, accessed 26 June 2026):

Plan Monthly (USD) Approx AUD (ex-GST) Includes
Free Trial Free Free 1,000 autocompletes + US$5 API credits
Basic US$10/month ~A$14.00 Unlimited autocomplete + US$10 API credits
Pro US$20/month ~A$28 Unlimited autocomplete + US$20 API credits + priority support
Ultra US$60/month ~A$84 Unlimited autocomplete + US$60 API credits + maximum productivity allocation

Team plan: US$40/seat/month (~A$56/seat ex-GST, ~A$56 ex-GST). Includes US$40 API credits per seat plus SSO, usage visibility, and the ability to enforce Privacy Mode team-wide.

API credits are consumed by agent usage, chat, and advanced AI features. Autocomplete is unlimited on paid plans. If you exceed your monthly credit allocation, additional usage is charged pay-as-you-go. Unused credits roll over for 30 days.

There is no AUD billing. Pricing is in USD. Australian users should confirm GST treatment on their subscription.

How it works in practice

Install the Sweep plugin from the JetBrains Marketplace (search "Sweep AI Autocomplete & Coding Agent"). Sign in or create an account. The free trial starts immediately with 1,000 autocomplete completions and US$5 in credits.

The Tab autocomplete starts working within minutes of installation. Unlike older autocomplete tools that suggest based on the current line, Sweep's model watches your editing pattern and predicts the next change — including changes to different parts of the file. It is noticeably faster than JetBrains AI Assistant and more accurate on code than many developers report GitHub Copilot to be in the JetBrains environment.

The agent is accessed through a sidebar chat panel. Type a prompt describing what you want to build or fix, and Sweep indexes your repository, forms a plan, and begins executing. It shows its reasoning, confirms before making large changes, and handles multi-file refactors. MCP server integration means you can connect external tools — databases, documentation, APIs — into the agent's context.

The AI code review feature is genuinely useful for development teams: point Sweep at a branch diff and it produces a structured review with specific suggestions.

What it does well

JetBrains parity with Cursor. For years, JetBrains developers were second-class citizens in the AI coding world. Sweep is the most credible answer to that problem. The 4.9-star rating from 40,000+ installs on the JetBrains Marketplace is not easily dismissed.

Next-edit autocomplete is distinctive. The custom Tab model predicts the next logical edit, not just the next character. Developers who have used it report it feels qualitatively different — faster and more accurate — than conventional autocomplete. This is Sweep's clearest product advantage.

Zero data retention on all supported models. Every model available in Sweep's interface (Sweep-0.1, Claude Opus 4.5, GPT-5.2, Gemini 3 Pro, and others) carries a zero data retention guarantee according to Sweep's published pricing documentation. This is meaningful for teams concerned about code confidentiality.

Affordable entry point. The Basic plan at US$10/month (~A$14) is low enough to try without meaningful risk. Unlimited autocomplete on all paid plans means the primary use case — inline code suggestions — is not metered.

SOC 2 compliance. For Australian enterprise teams evaluating third-party coding tools, SOC 2 certification is a standard compliance requirement. Sweep meets it.

What it doesn't do well

JetBrains only. If you have a mixed team where some developers use VS Code and others use JetBrains, Sweep does not solve your problem. VS Code support is listed in the documentation but the product's identity and development energy are squarely on JetBrains. VS Code users should look at Cursor or Cline — Continue, named here when this review was written, was wound down in July 2026.

Code is processed on Sweep's US infrastructure. Sweep is a hosted cloud product. Code you send to the agent or autocomplete service is processed on Sweep's servers, which are US-based. The zero data retention policy means Sweep does not train on your code or store it after processing, but processing still happens outside Australia. Teams with strict data sovereignty requirements should consider Tabby (self-hosted) instead.

The GitHub issue-to-PR original product is now secondary. If you found Sweep via its original reputation for automated PR generation from GitHub issues, be aware the product has substantially pivoted. The current product is a JetBrains IDE assistant, not primarily a CI/CD automation tool.

Usage-based credit costs can add up. Autocomplete is unlimited, but agent usage consumes API credits based on model costs. Heavy agent use on Claude Opus 4.5 at ~US$0.25 per message can burn through the Pro plan's US$20 credit allocation in a week of intensive development. Keep an eye on the Balance tab.

No self-hosting option. Unlike Tabby, Sweep cannot be deployed on your own infrastructure. Privacy Mode prevents your code from being stored or trained on, but processing happens on Sweep's servers.

Australian fit

Sweep works for Australian developers without any configuration — it is a cloud plugin with global availability. There are no AU-specific blockers.

The data handling story is reasonable but not exceptional. Zero data retention across all models means code is not logged or retained after the API call completes. SOC 2 compliance provides a credible security baseline. But processing happens on Sweep's US servers, and there is no option to route traffic through Australian data centres.

For most Australian individual developers and small teams, this is acceptable. The zero data retention policy is stronger than many hosted alternatives. But for organisations handling sensitive IP, government data, or personal information that is subject to strict Privacy Act obligations, the US-based processing is a genuine concern that Tabby's self-hosting approach solves and Sweep does not.

The pricing at approximately A$14–34/month for individual plans is affordable in Australian terms. There is no AUD billing and no GST explicitly itemised on the pricing page — confirm GST treatment with your accountant before claiming business deductions.

There is no Australian support or presence. Sweep is a US startup (Y Combinator-backed) and support is via Discord and email at team@sweep.dev.

Australian Fit score: 3/5. Zero data retention and SOC 2 are better than average for hosted tools, but US-based processing, no AU infrastructure, no AUD billing, and no AU support limit the score. Works well for most AU developers; not suitable for teams with hard data sovereignty requirements.

Alternatives

  • JetBrains AI Assistant — the built-in AI from JetBrains. Native integration, but generally rated lower than Sweep by users who have tried both. Worth comparing on a trial if you want to stay first-party.
  • Tabnine — ⚠ check the review before you go looking: as of 24 September 2026 tabnine.com redirects to Tricentis, its pricing page redirects to a sales contact form, and its own plugin listing says it “does not onboard new users”. It was another AI coding assistant working across JetBrains and VS Code — longer-established, with enterprise features and a self-hosted option, more conservative and less agentic than Sweep — and the technology now sits inside the Tricentis platform. Still the right comparison for an existing customer; not a product a new Australian team can sign up for.
  • Cursor — the leading AI code editor, but VS Code-only. If you are considering switching IDEs, Cursor is the benchmark to compare against Sweep.

Bottom line

Sweep is the best AI coding assistant currently available for JetBrains IDEs. The next-edit autocomplete is genuinely impressive, the agent is capable, and the pricing is accessible. Australian JetBrains developers who have been waiting for a Cursor equivalent in their preferred IDE have found it. The zero data retention guarantee is a meaningful feature. The limitations are the hosted-only architecture (no AU data centre option) and the JetBrains exclusivity. If you are a JetBrains developer, start a free trial — the 1,000 autocomplete free tier is enough to form a real opinion.

Update history
  • 24 Sep 2026 — the Tabnine line in Alternatives now carries a warning. Found by sentry 12's re-run, which lists every file still recommending a flagged product with no notice. tabnine.com 301-redirects to tricentis.com/products and its pricing page to tricentis.com/contact-us; the review was re-scored 14/25 → 12/25 the same day (Dossiers/dossier-tabnine-2026.md). Nothing about Sweep changes — no figure, no score, no verdict. Two other files the sentry listed were checked and deliberately left alone: review-augment-code and review-fashn name Tabnine in comparative prose rather than recommending it, and a warning there would be noise. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Nothing was re-cut — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed "Approx AUD (if GST charged, +10%)" (Basic ~A$15.40; Pro ~A$31; Ultra ~A$92). The GST position is stated in words once in the note above the pricing table. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
