The verdict: Soundraw solves a real problem for video producers and podcasters: finding background music that won't get your content flagged or your account demonetised. It generates usable instrumental tracks quickly, lets you customise them at the bar level, and gives you a perpetual licence that survives cancellation. But it is instrumental-only, capped at five minutes per track, and, while it now quotes Australian dollars (from A$15.99 a month), there is no GST clarity, no Australian data residency, and no local support. For a Melbourne small business owner making YouTube content or client videos, it earns its keep. For anyone who needs vocals, complex composition, or confidence about where their data lives, it does not. Score: 14/25 — Good.
What it is
Soundraw is a Japanese AI music generator built for content creators who need royalty-free background tracks without the hassle of licensing, attribution, or Content ID disputes. It was founded in Tokyo in 2020 by Daigo Kusunoki and has raised approximately US$5.22 million (~A$7.3 million) to date.
The pitch is simple: pick a genre, a mood, and an energy level, choose from fifteen generated tracks, then refine the one you like using a visual bar-by-bar editor. You can shorten intros, swap out instrument layers, adjust tempo, and restructure sections. Download and you are done.
Soundraw distinguishes itself on two grounds. First, it trains its AI only on music created by its own in-house producers — not scraped from existing artists. That matters for commercial use, because it removes the legal grey area that haunts competitors using unlicensed training data. Second, it offers a perpetual licence: tracks you download while subscribed remain licensed forever, even after you cancel. That is a genuine differentiator.
What it does not do: vocals, text-to-music prompting, collaboration features, or tracks longer than five minutes.
What it costs in Australia (AUD pricing)
Soundraw quotes Australian dollars to an Australian visitor: read in a browser on an Australian connection on 30 September 2026, its pricing grid shows A$ prices for every paid plan, and the AUD columns below are Soundraw's own. The USD column is what this review first listed in June. GST treatment is not stated anywhere on the Soundraw website, its terms, or its checkout. The terms are governed by Japanese law and make no mention of tax, so we cannot confirm whether GST is added at checkout for Australian customers or already absorbed in the price. Treat the AUD figures as list prices that may or may not include GST, and assume GST may be added on top if the payment processor charges it as a foreign digital service. Check your invoice after subscribing.
| Plan | AUD (monthly billing) | AUD a month (annual billing) | USD in June (monthly / annual) | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | — | — | — | Generate and preview only; no downloads |
| Creator | A$15.99/mo | A$9.16/mo | US$19.99 / US$16.99 | Unlimited MP3 downloads; no WAV/stems; no streaming distribution |
| Artist Starter | A$30.99/mo | A$16.58/mo | US$39.99 / US$29.99 | 10 downloads/mo (MP3 only); streaming distribution allowed |
| Artist Pro | A$46.99/mo | A$19.92/mo | US$59.99 / US$35.99 | 20 downloads/mo; WAV + stems; streaming distribution |
| Artist Unlimited | A$78.99/mo | A$27.42/mo | US$99.99 / US$49.99 | Unlimited downloads; WAV + stems; streaming distribution |
| Enterprise/API | Ask | Contact sales | US$199–US$300/mo | Custom; API access; dedicated support |
Notes: Annual billing saves 15–50% depending on the plan. The free account lets you generate and customise tracks without restriction — you simply cannot download or use them commercially without a paid plan. There is no free trial of the licence itself. The Australian prices are the page's own (30 September 2026); whether your card is charged in AUD at checkout was not tested.
How it works / features
The workflow takes about three minutes from signup to a listenable track.
You select a genre (30+ options including Lo-Fi, Hip-Hop, Cinematic, Jazz, EDM, and orchestral styles), a mood, a length (10 seconds to 5 minutes), and a tempo range. Soundraw generates fifteen variations simultaneously. You preview them, pick one, and open the editor.
The editor is where Soundraw earns its reputation for depth among non-musicians. You see the track split into sections — intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro — with colour-coded bars. You can toggle individual instrument layers on or off (drums, bass, melody, chords, FX), raise or lower the energy level for specific bars, delete sections, or duplicate them. Structurally, you can reshape the track significantly without touching a single slider in a digital audio workstation.
Download formats depend on your plan: MP3 on Creator, WAV and separate stems (drums, bass, melody, FX as individual files) on Artist Pro and above. Stems are useful if you want to remix the track in GarageBand or Adobe Audition.
The licensing is clean. All plans include a royalty-free commercial licence covering YouTube videos, podcasts, client work, social media, ads, TV, and radio. Artist plans add the right to distribute on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, provided you add substantial original creative elements — you cannot upload an unmodified Soundraw track to Spotify and monetise it.
One practical note for Australian business users: the licence explicitly covers background music in a single physical store. Multi-location retail requires the Enterprise plan.
What it does well
The editing tool is genuinely good. Most AI music tools give you a track and leave you there. Soundraw lets non-musicians reshape structure, swap instruments, and adjust energy at the bar level without any technical knowledge. A Melbourne café owner building their own Instagram Reels can produce a 45-second Lo-Fi track tailored to their brand feel in ten minutes. That is not marketing fluff — it is a real capability gap that Soundraw fills.
Licensing is clear and perpetual. The royalty-free terms cover the scenarios most small businesses actually encounter: YouTube, podcasts, client videos, social ads. The perpetual download licence means you are not locked in forever just to keep using music you already paid for. Competitors like Epidemic Sound strip your licence the moment you cancel.
Ethical AI training. Every track is trained on music created by Soundraw's own producers, not scraped from other artists. In a category rife with copyright controversy, that is a meaningful differentiator — particularly for commercial clients concerned about legal exposure.
Consistent, predictable quality. Because generation is structured (genre + mood + energy sliders) rather than open-ended text prompts, the output quality is reliable. You are unlikely to generate something unusable. The trade-off is creativity, but for background music, consistency matters more than surprise.
Free generation, no credit card needed. You can create an account, generate fifteen tracks, and edit them fully without paying. You only subscribe when you are ready to download. That removes the friction of a credit card commitment before knowing whether the tool suits you.
Where it falls short
No vocals. Soundraw generates instrumental music only. If you need a jingle with singing, a voice-led track, or anything with lyrics, you need a different tool — Suno, Udio, or a human vocalist. For many business use cases (explainer video background music, podcast intros, hold music) this is fine. For social content that relies on a sung hook, it is a deal-breaker.
Five-minute track limit. The maximum track length is five minutes. For a YouTube tutorial running twenty minutes, you will stitch multiple tracks together, which creates audible transitions. This is a known limitation; Soundraw's founder has acknowledged longer tracks are on the roadmap, but they are not available as of June 2026.
Pricing is steep at the Artist tier. The Creator plan at A$15.99/mo (A$9.16 a month billed annually) is reasonable for unlimited MP3 downloads. But if you need WAV files for broadcast or want to distribute music on streaming platforms, you jump to Artist Pro at A$46.99/mo, or A$19.92 a month billed annually (about A$239 a year) — a real line item for a small business.
Repetition is a structural risk. Because generation is driven by a fixed set of genre, mood, and energy parameters rather than open-ended prompting, the output space is bounded — structural patterns (energy curves, section transitions within a genre) can recur once you generate at volume. For occasional use this is invisible. For high-volume content creators churning out daily videos, expect to lean on the editor to vary tracks that would otherwise feel familiar.
One device at a time. Soundraw does not permit concurrent logins from multiple devices on a single account. For a small team or agency managing content across multiple workstations, that is an irritating constraint.
No collaborative features. There is no way to share projects, leave feedback, or co-edit within Soundraw. In 2026, for a tool charging enterprise rates, that is an oversight.
Australian fit
Soundraw is a Japanese product serving a global market from Tokyo. For Australian users, this creates several practical gaps.
Checkout currency and GST are unconfirmed. The pricing page quotes Australian dollars (Creator A$15.99 a month, 30 September 2026), but we have not tested whether the card is charged in AUD, and GST treatment is not stated anywhere.
GST treatment is unstated. The Soundraw website, terms of service, and privacy policy contain no mention of GST, and the terms are governed by Japanese law. We could not confirm from any Soundraw page whether GST is added at checkout by the payment processor for Australian accounts. Check your invoice after subscribing and seek accounting advice if you are a registered GST entity claiming the input tax credit.
No Australian data residency. Soundraw's privacy policy does not disclose where user data is stored. The company is headquartered in Tokyo; servers are likely in Japan or a US/European cloud provider. There is no Australian region. Your usage data, generated tracks, and account information are stored offshore. For most small businesses using this for background music, that is a low-stakes concern. For organisations with data sensitivity requirements, it may be relevant.
No Australian support. Soundraw's support is online-only (chat via Channel.io on the website, plus a FAQ centre). There is no AU phone support, no AU business hours commitment, and no published response SLA. We have not been able to independently assess response times. If you hit a billing issue at 9am Sydney time, you are dealing with a Tokyo-based team outside Australian hours.
No AU-aware outputs. The music generator has no knowledge of or optimisation for Australian content formats, platforms, or cultural context. That is not a meaningful limitation for instrumental background music, but worth noting.
AUD pricing is shown by location. The pricing grid shows Australian dollars to an Australian visitor (confirmed in a browser on 30 September 2026). Check the currency at checkout before relying on it.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Creator plan is reasonable at A$15.99/mo (A$9.16 annual) for unlimited MP3s. Artist tiers jump sharply for WAV/stems. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | One of the most intuitive music tools available for non-musicians. The bar-level editor is approachable and the preview-before-you-pay model is sensible. |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | Strong customisation within its lane (instrumental background music), but no vocals, 5-minute cap, no text prompting, and no collaborative features are real gaps. |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | Quotes AUD on the web since at least 30 Sep 2026 (checkout currency untested; re-score owed, [RS18]); GST treatment unstated, no AU data residency, no AU support. |
| Reliability & Support | 2/5 | Music generation is stable and consistent. Support is limited to online chat with a Tokyo team outside AU hours, with no published response SLA; responsiveness is unassessed. No uptime SLA. |
| Total | 14/25 |
★★★ Good (raw score 14/25)
Australian Fit gate note: Australian Fit scores 2/5, which falls below the ≥4/5 threshold required for ★★★★★ or ★★★★ ratings and for Top Pick designation. The star rating is capped accordingly. See our review methodology for details.
Bottom line
If you are a content creator, video producer, or podcaster who needs a steady supply of royalty-free background music and can live with instrumentals only, Soundraw's Creator plan delivers genuine value. The editing tool is better than anything else at this price point, the perpetual licence is a real advantage, and the ethical AI training removes legal uncertainty.
If you are a musician or producer wanting to distribute original work on Spotify or Apple Music, the Artist plans unlock that — but the 10–20 download monthly caps are tight, the AUD cost is significant, and the stems workflow requires post-production chops that undercut the "accessible" pitch.
If you are a small business owner who needs jingles with vocals, a branded sound with a sung hook, or music longer than five minutes, Soundraw is not the right tool. Look at Suno or Udio for text-to-music with vocals, or commission a local producer.
If your business has data sensitivity requirements — legal, financial, health — take stock of the offshore data storage before subscribing. There is no AU data residency option and no policy clarity on where your data sits.
For most Australian small businesses needing background music for videos and social content: it works, it is reasonably priced at the Creator tier, and the licensing headaches it removes are worth the monthly fee. Just go in knowing you are billing in USD and dealing with Tokyo support.
Update history
- 30 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 — POSITIVE: Soundraw quotes Australian dollars. Read in a browser on an Australian connection (

The verdict, currency paragraph, table (AUD now the vendor's own), notes, two pricing cons, the Value for Money note, the AUD FAQ (body and schema) and reviewBody are corrected. Checkout currency and GST treatment were not tested.aud_native: true(web). The Australian Fit note is reworded to match; score held at 14/25; [RS18] Australian Fit (upward) filed. - 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.
