The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Prices: USD figures are converted at A$1 = US$0.6970 (RBA, 7 October 2026), about A$1.43 per US dollar, and shown ex-GST. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Shortwave is one of the fastest AI email clients you can buy, and the agent genuinely saves time on a heavy inbox. A free plan and a US$18 (~A$26) Pro tier now make it fair value for a sole operator. Teams pay US$30 a seat a month and up, all in US dollars, with no AUD invoicing and no confirmed Australian data residency. Worth a try if your inbox is your job. Not yet a comfortable fit for an Australian business that cares where its email lives.

What Shortwave is

Shortwave is an AI-powered email client that sits on top of your existing mailbox. It started life as a Gmail-only app — its founders are ex-Google engineers, and the homepage still carries The Verge's line that it's "the spiritual successor to Google Inbox." It now also supports Outlook and Exchange via its migration guides, so it is no longer strictly a Gmail tool.

The pitch is simple: instead of clicking through your inbox, you type a prompt. "Archive everything from newsletters this week." "Draft a reply to Sarah agreeing to Tuesday." "Find the invoice from the accountant in March." The agent reads your mail, runs the search, drafts the reply in your own writing style, and waits for you to hit send.

It runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. This is a productivity tool for people who live in their inbox — founders, account managers, consultants — not a casual email app.

What it costs in Australia

Shortwave bills in US dollars only. There is no AUD pricing, no local invoicing entity, and GST is not itemised — you would treat it as an imported digital service. The conversions below use the RBA rate of 7 October 2026 (US$1 ≈ A$1.43), shown ex-GST. Shortwave does not say how it handles Australian GST, so treat the A$ figures as indicative.

In June 2026 the public page listed only the Business tiers. Since September 2026 it has an Individual tab again: a Free plan (limited AI usage, 90 days of search history) and Pro at US$18 a seat a month.

Plan Price (USD, per seat per month) Approx A$ (ex-GST) What you get
Free trial US$0 for 14 days — Full features, time-limited
Free (Individual) US$0 — Limited AI usage, 90 days of search history, 15 threads per AI search, "Sent with Shortwave" signature
Pro (Individual) US$18 / seat / mo ~A$26 / seat / mo Standard intelligence, full search history, 3 years of AI search history, 50 threads per search
Business US$30 / seat / mo ~A$43 / seat / mo Roughly 150–300 AI requests/day (vendor's stated guide for the Business plan, varies with request complexity), 5-year AI search history, 50 threads per search, 3 AI filters
Premier US$45 / seat / mo ~A$64 / seat / mo 2× AI usage, unlimited search history, 100 threads per search, 10 AI filters
Max US$120 / seat / mo ~A$172 / seat / mo 6× AI usage, 150 threads per search, 50 AI filters
Enterprise Custom (contact sales) — SOC 2 Type II / GDPR on request

Source: shortwave.com/pricing. Business, Premier and Max re-read 8 October 2026; the Individual tab (Free and Pro) read in an Australian browser 30 September 2026. The page shows prices per seat per month with no billing basis or annual discount; in June it showed US$24, US$36 and US$100 "billed annually". Confirm the billing term at checkout. A 14-day trial runs on the paid plans.

For a sole operator, the Free plan is a real starting point, and Pro costs about A$309 a year. A team is a different sum: Business runs about A$515 a seat a year, in foreign currency, and Premier about A$772.

How it works in practice

The day-to-day experience is fast — genuinely so. You open the command bar, type what you want, and the agent acts. Drafting is the standout: its "Ghostwriter" learns from your sent mail, so replies come back sounding like you wrote them, not like a chatbot. On a long thread, you can ask it to summarise the argument and pull out who owes what — and it does, in a few seconds.

The agent also reaches outside the inbox. Shortwave connects to Slack, Google Calendar, Notion, Asana, HubSpot, Linear and Zapier, so you can tell it to "create a calendar hold and message the client" from one prompt. AI-powered filters let you write inbox rules in plain English instead of fiddly Gmail filter syntax.

Under the hood, Shortwave routes work across multiple providers. Its security docs state it uses OpenAI, Anthropic and Pinecone as sub-processors, and that "the vast majority" of its AI workloads run on open-source models on hardware it controls. The marketing line is "the very latest AI models from the top research labs" — it does not pin itself to one vendor.

What it does well

  • Speed. Prompt-to-action is near-instant on common tasks. Clearing a backlog of 200 newsletters takes one sentence, not twenty clicks.
  • Writing in your voice. Ghostwriter learns from your sent mail and drafts replies that actually sound like you — the single best reason to pay.
  • Search that answers questions. You can ask "what did the landlord say about the lease renewal?" and get an answer with the source thread, not just a list of emails.
  • Real integrations. Slack, Calendar, Notion, HubSpot and others are first-class, so the agent can finish a task without you leaving the inbox.
  • Multi-model routing. It isn't locked to one AI lab, and most workloads run on models Shortwave hosts itself — a sensible posture on data exposure.

What it doesn't do well

  • Team seats are dear. Business starts at US$30 a seat a month (~A$43). In June the page showed US$24 billed annually; it now shows US$30 with no annual option. Individuals now have a Free plan and a US$18 Pro plan, but a small team pays the Business rate per person.
  • No AUD billing, no GST invoice. You pay in US dollars and absorb the exchange rate. There is no Australian tax invoice — accounting treats it as an imported digital service.
  • No confirmed Australian data residency. Shortwave's security page states only that data sits in "Google Cloud's highly secure & compliant data centers" — it names no region and no AU option. There is no documented way to keep your mail in Sydney or Melbourne.
  • Compliance is gated behind sales. SOC 2 Type II and GDPR are available only "on request" via the sales team — not self-serve, and not confirmed for the lower tiers.
  • It's still email-client-bound. You are committing your whole inbox to a third-party client. If you live in Outlook for compliance reasons, the experience is less mature than on Gmail.

Australian fit

This is where Shortwave struggles for our readers. There is no AUD billing, no local invoicing, and no GST treatment you can hand to your bookkeeper without a note. More important for any business handling client or financial correspondence: Shortwave does not publish where your email is stored. It says Google Cloud, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, and that customer data is never used to train third-party models — all good. But it names no Australian region, and SOC 2/GDPR compliance is something you have to ask for.

For a Melbourne marketing consultant, that may be tolerable. For an accountant, a lawyer or anyone bound by the Privacy Act handling sensitive client mail, the missing residency answer is a real blocker until you get it in writing from their sales team.

Alternatives

  • Superhuman — the original premium AI inbox. Similarly USD-priced and similarly silent on AU residency, but a more polished keyboard-first experience. Compare on price and whether you want an agent (Shortwave) or speed-and-keyboard (Superhuman).
  • Gemini — if you are already on Google Workspace, the built-in Gemini side panel does a chunk of what Shortwave does inside Gmail, with clearer Workspace data terms and AUD billing through Google.
  • Copilot — for Outlook/Microsoft 365 shops, Copilot brings AI drafting and summarising natively, billed in AUD with Microsoft's published AU data-handling terms.

Bottom line

Shortwave is a very good product with a residency story that doesn't yet suit most Australian businesses. For an individual, the pricing problem has eased: start on the Free plan, and step up to Pro at US$18 a month if the drafting earns its keep. If you process hundreds of emails a day, the speed and the in-your-voice drafting are the real deal. But go in clear-eyed. A team pays US$30 a seat a month and up, in US dollars. And Shortwave still won't say which country your email lives in. Recommended for individuals and power users; teams handling sensitive client mail should get residency in writing first.

Score

Criterion Score Note
Value for Money 3/5 A useful Free plan and Pro at US$18 (~A$26) a month give individuals a cheap way in. Held to 3: team seats start at US$30 with no annual discount shown, and billing is USD only.
Ease of Use 4/5 Prompt-to-action is fast and the agent is genuinely intuitive; a minor learning curve.
Feature Depth 4/5 Strong agent, in-voice drafting, question-answering search, and real third-party integrations.
Australian Fit 2/5 No AUD billing, no GST invoice, no published AU data residency, compliance gated behind sales.
Reliability & Support 3/5 Established product on Google Cloud with solid encryption, but priority support and SOC 2 sit on higher/gated tiers.
Total 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Australian Fit is 2/5, below the 4/5 our Methodology requires for a five-star rating or a category Top Pick. Shortwave can be recommended, but it cannot be named a category winner.

Update history
  • 8 Oct 2026 — New edition: re-score after the plan change. Was: 15/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good (Value for Money 2/5, scored on "no free plan, floor US$24"). Now: 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (Value for Money 3/5). A useful Free plan and a US$18 Pro plan lower the entry for individuals; team seats rose to US$30 with no annual discount shown, and billing is still USD only, so it stops at 3. A$ conversions recut at the RBA rate of 7 Oct 2026. Source: Shortwave pricing page, Business US$30, Premier US$45, Max US$120 a seat a month (read 8 Oct 2026); Individual Free and Pro US$18 (read in an Australian browser 30 Sep 2026). The previous edition is kept unchanged and linked above.
  • 30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; the free plan and a cheap tier are back. shortwave.com/pricing on an Australian connection has an Individual tab again — Free (limited AI usage, 90 days of history) and Pro US$18 a seat a month — and a Business tab with Business US$30, Premier US$45, Max US$120 a seat a month, with no billing basis stated (June: US$24 / US$36 / US$100 "billed annually"). The review's title, verdict, a weakness, VfM note, two FAQs (body and schema) and reviewBody all rested on "no free plan, floor US$24"; rewritten. Score held at 15/25; Value for Money (2/5) flagged for re-review ([RS6], upward). Bare $, no A$. aud_native: false set. • 20 Jun 2026 — First reviewed.
  • 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
