The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Rime builds some of the most realistic AI voices available, with a clear focus on enterprise voice agents — phone bots, IVR systems, outbound calling. Arcana v3 is genuinely impressive: low latency, natural prosody, emotion, and multilingual code-switching. But Rime is built for enterprise developers, not general users. No interface, no consumer pricing, no Australian data residency, and USD-only billing. For Australian developers building voice AI at scale, Rime warrants serious evaluation. For everyone else, it doesn't apply.

What Rime is
Rime (trading as Rime Labs) is a San Francisco-based AI voice company founded in 2022 by a team of linguists and engineers. The founders — Lily Clifford (Stanford NLP), Brooke Larson (PhD linguist, former Amazon Alexa), and Ares Geovanos (Stanford engineer) — built Rime's models with an unusual focus: recording the full range of spontaneous human speech, including interruptions, laughter, breath, filler words, and vocal disfluencies. The resulting models sound human not because they are polished, but because they are messy in the right ways.
Rime offers two production models:
- Arcana v3 — Rime's most expressive and human-sounding TTS model. 300+ voices including bilingual and multilingual options. Supports real-time code-switching between English and Spanish mid-sentence (including Spanglish). Released February 2026. Cloud latency approximately 200ms; on-premise under 120ms.
- Mist — Rime's enterprise-speed model. Sub-200ms cloud latency, under 100ms on-premise. Designed for high-volume voice agent deployments where throughput matters more than maximum expressiveness.
- Coda — A third model, positioned above Arcana on the pricing ladder (confirm at rime.ai/pricing).
Rime's customers include enterprise brands in food service, retail, and customer service. Their case studies cite a 15% sales increase for major food brands using Rime voices in outbound call campaigns — though that figure comes from Rime's own materials and should be treated as promotional context rather than an independent benchmark.
Rime is not a consumer product. There is no interface for uploading scripts and downloading audio files for personal use. You access Rime via API or enterprise contract.
What it costs in Australia
Rime prices in USD. All figures below are approximate AUD conversions at ~1.40 USD/AUD. Shown ex-gst (a gst-registered business quoting its abn is not charged gst on an imported digital service; other buyers add ~10%)..

Pricing read on rime.ai/pricing on 30 September 2026. The page now lists two models, Coda and Mist v3, and two plans, Starter and Enterprise; the Arcana rate and the Growth plan this review carried in June are no longer on it.
New accounts start with free minutes on the Starter plan to evaluate the platform (the pricing page says about 800 minutes in one place and 3,000 in its FAQ).
How it works in practice
Rime's API is straightforward. You POST text to the TTS endpoint with a voice ID and model parameter, and receive audio back — typically as a WAV or MP3 stream. The response time for Arcana v3 in cloud mode is around 200ms, which is fast enough for most voice agent turn-taking.
Voice selection happens from Rime's library of 300+ voices. You can filter by gender, accent, and language. Rime does not offer custom voice cloning in the same way Fish Audio or ElevenLabs do — this is an off-the-shelf voice library aimed at professional deployments.
Multilingual and code-switching is a genuine differentiator. Arcana v3 can switch between English and Spanish mid-sentence without breaking the voice identity — important for US-market voice agents serving bilingual users. For Australia, the practical benefit is limited unless your use case serves communities where code-switching is common.
On-premise deployment is available for enterprise clients. This is significant for regulated industries: on-premise means data never leaves your infrastructure, which addresses the data residency problem entirely. It requires a separate enterprise agreement and is not cheap.
Integration is typically with a voice agent orchestration layer — Vapi, LiveKit, Retell, or a custom WebSocket stack. Rime is one layer of a larger voice AI stack, not a complete solution.
What it does well
Voice quality is among the best in class. Arcana v3 consistently ranks near the top of independent TTS evaluations for naturalness and expressiveness. The linguistic foundation — built by a PhD linguist team that recorded spontaneous speech — shows in the output. Prosody, pacing, and emotional variation feel more human than most competitors at this price point.
Latency for voice agents is excellent. Sub-200ms in cloud mode and under 100ms on-premise puts Rime at the fast end of production-ready TTS. For real-time conversation, this matters.
Enterprise compliance is taken seriously. SOC 2 Type II certification, HIPAA compliance for eligible configurations, and on-premise deployment options are all in place. For regulated industries that get past the AU data residency question, Rime has the compliance foundations.
Transparent, usage-based pricing. Per-character billing with published rates is much easier to model costs against than "contact us for pricing." The Starter free tier allows meaningful evaluation.
Mist vs Arcana trade-off is clear. Knowing which model to use for which use case (speed vs expressiveness) is explicit in Rime's documentation, which makes architectural decisions easier for development teams.
What it doesn't do well
No consumer or small-business path. Rime is enterprise infrastructure. If you need a voice for a podcast, marketing video, or e-learning course, Rime is the wrong tool. There is no interface, no personal use tier with commercial rights, and the pricing model is designed for developers running at scale.
No Australian data residency. Data is processed in the US (or on-premise for enterprise clients who arrange it). For AU businesses handling sensitive audio, this is a compliance gap. The on-premise option addresses it — but on-premise means significant infrastructure investment.
Limited Australian English voices. Rime's 300+ voice library is weighted towards US English accents. Australian English is not prominently featured in the standard library. For AU-market voice agents, accent selection is limited — a meaningful gap if caller experience with a local-sounding voice is important to your business.
USD pricing with no AUD option. No Australian invoicing. GST is the user's problem to account for.
Support is enterprise-tier only. Self-serve users get documentation. Meaningful support — SLAs, dedicated contact, deployment help — requires an Enterprise plan. For Australian developers evaluating the platform, expect to lean heavily on documentation.
Voice cloning is limited. Rime is not a voice cloning platform. You work from their library. If you need a custom cloned voice (e.g., a brand-specific voice identity), you are either selecting from 300+ options or having a conversation with Rime's enterprise team about custom voice creation.
Australian fit
Rime's Australian fit is constrained.
Data: US-hosted cloud inference. On-premise deployment available for enterprise clients — this is the only path to AU data residency. For regulated industries, that path exists but is expensive.
Pricing: USD only. GST on top. No AUD invoicing.
Voices: No prominent Australian English voice options in the standard library. For AU-market voice agents, this is a real limitation.
Compliance: SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA-eligible. No specific AU regulatory certifications.
Support: No AU presence or AU-timezone support. Enterprise clients get better access.
For an Australian fintech or healthcare company building a compliant voice agent at enterprise scale, Rime's combination of voice quality, latency, and on-premise deployment option is worth the conversation. For smaller Australian developers or startups, the price and complexity put it out of reach relative to alternatives.
Alternatives
- ElevenLabs — The most direct comparison on voice quality. ElevenLabs offers broader voice libraries, voice cloning, and a more accessible entry point for smaller teams. Slightly higher latency than Rime's Mist for real-time agents.
- Deepgram Aura — Cheaper TTS as part of Deepgram's all-in-one voice AI stack. Voice quality is below Rime's Arcana but the integrated STT + TTS + Voice Agent API is a simpler stack to manage.
- Murf — Interface-led TTS aimed at content creators rather than developers. If you need TTS for content production rather than real-time agent use, Murf is more accessible.
Bottom line
Rime is technically among the best TTS providers for enterprise voice agent applications. Arcana v3's naturalness and Mist's speed are genuine product advantages. The compliance foundations for regulated industries are in place.
For Australia specifically, the limitations are substantial: no AU data residency in the default cloud deployment, no Australian English voice options in the standard library, and USD-only pricing. The on-premise option resolves the data question but at enterprise cost and complexity.
If you are a well-resourced Australian development team building voice agents at scale and voice quality is a meaningful differentiator for your product, Rime is worth evaluating alongside ElevenLabs. If you are a smaller team, start with a provider whose entry-point cost and AU fit are less restricted.

Frequently asked questions
Is Rime AI available in Australia?
Rime's API is accessible from Australia, but voice generation is processed on US-based servers. There is no Australian data centre in the default cloud deployment. Enterprise clients can negotiate on-premise deployment, which would keep data within Australian infrastructure. Businesses with data residency requirements should contact Rime's enterprise team.
Does Rime AI have Australian English voices?
Rime's standard library of 300+ voices is weighted towards US English accents. Australian English is not prominently represented in the default library. For Australian-market voice agents where a local accent is important, this is a limitation worth testing before committing to Rime.
How much does Rime AI cost in Australian dollars?
Rime prices in USD. The Mist model costs approximately USD $0.030 per 1,000 characters (roughly AUD $0.042 ex-GST) and Coda approximately USD $0.050 (roughly AUD $0.070 ex-GST); Arcana is no longer on the pricing page (30 September 2026). GST (10%) applies to Australian purchases. New accounts start with free minutes on the Starter plan. Confirm current pricing at rime.ai/pricing.
