The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Deepgram is one of the cheapest and most capable speech-to-text APIs available. Its Nova-3 model offers accurate real-time transcription, strong multilingual support, and a bundled Voice Agent API that competes on price. For Australian developers, the cost is attractive. But like AssemblyAI, this is pure API infrastructure — no interface, no app, no easy entry for non-developers. Data stays offshore, there's no AU region, and Deepgram's TTS voices lag behind the best dedicated TTS providers.

Score: 13/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good Last reviewed: 26 June 2026 by Adam.

What Deepgram is

Deepgram is a US-based speech AI company founded in 2015, providing speech-to-text (STT), text-to-speech (TTS), and a full Voice Agent API from a single platform. Its differentiator has always been speed and cost efficiency — not feature breadth or a polished end-user product.

The flagship STT model is Nova-3, released in late 2025. Nova-3 handles 36+ languages in monolingual mode and supports real-time multilingual transcription — code-switching between languages mid-sentence without needing to specify which language is being spoken. A Flux conversational STT model is also available, designed specifically for voice agents: it understands conversational turn-taking and interruptions rather than just transcribing words.

On the TTS side, Deepgram offers Aura-2 and the older Aura-1 — serviceable AI voices built for low-latency voice agent output rather than high-fidelity audio production.

The Voice Agent API bundles STT, an LLM, and TTS at a single flat hourly rate — eliminating the complexity of managing multiple providers when building a voice bot or IVR system.

Deepgram is entirely API-driven. There is no end-user interface. If you cannot write code or integrate APIs, Deepgram offers you nothing.

What it costs in Australia

Deepgram prices in USD. All figures below are approximate AUD conversions at ~1.40 USD/AUD. Shown ex-gst (a gst-registered business quoting its abn is not charged gst on an imported digital service; other buyers add ~10%)..

Product / Tier USD Approx AUD (ex-GST)
Nova-3 STT — Batch (Pay As You Go) USD $0.0043/min ~AUD $0.006/min
Nova-3 STT — Streaming (Pay As You Go) USD $0.0077/min ~AUD $0.011/min
Nova-3 STT — Growth tier (batch) Discounted from PAYG —
Aura-2 TTS (Pay As You Go) USD $0.030/1K chars ~AUD $0.042/1K chars
Aura-1 TTS (Pay As You Go) USD $0.015/1K chars ~AUD $0.021/1K chars
Voice Agent API USD $4.50/hr ~AUD $6.30/hr
Free tier USD $200 credit on sign-up —

Growth tier discounts apply at USD $4,000+ annual commitment. Nova-2 (older model) remains available at the same price as Nova-3 batch — $0.0043/min.

How it works in practice

Deepgram's API follows the same pattern as most STT services: authenticate, send audio, receive transcript. The documentation is comprehensive and the SDKs cover Python, JavaScript,.NET, Go, and Rust.

For batch transcription (pre-recorded audio), you send a file URL or raw bytes and receive a JSON response. Typical turnaround for a one-hour audio file is under two minutes.

For streaming, Deepgram opens a WebSocket and returns word-level transcripts in near-real-time. Nova-3's streaming latency is around 200–300ms in US regions. For Australian-based deployments, expect an additional 150–250ms round-trip to US servers — still workable for most voice agent applications, but not as snappy as a local deployment would be.

Speaker diarisation in Nova-3 supports up to 12 speakers reliably (up from about 6–8 in Nova-2). The new batch diarisation model (Diarization v2) improves accuracy for overlapping speech.

Flux is worth noting for voice agent builders. Unlike standard STT, Flux is tuned for conversational flow — it handles barge-ins, false starts, and turn-taking more gracefully. This is a meaningful advantage if you are building an outbound calling bot or IVR system.

For Australian English accents, Deepgram does not publish Australia-specific accuracy data. Nova-3 is trained on broad English data. Developer reports suggest reasonable performance on standard Australian English. Strong regional accents and informal speech are worth testing before production deployment.

What it does well

Price-to-performance is strong. At USD $0.0043/minute for batch STT, Deepgram Nova-3 is one of the most cost-efficient options available. The free $200 credit provides a meaningful evaluation period.

Real-time performance is fast. For US-region deployments, Nova-3 streaming is genuinely low-latency. Even from Australia, the round-trip is acceptable for most agent use cases.

Multilingual is genuinely useful. The ability to transcribe multilingual audio — including mid-sentence code-switching — without specifying the language upfront is a real differentiator for platforms serving diverse audiences.

All-in-one stack for voice agents. Having STT, TTS, and a Voice Agent API from a single provider simplifies billing, reduces integration complexity, and means one support relationship rather than three.

Flux for voice agents. The conversational STT model handles the messiness of real human speech — interruptions, filler words, turn overlap — better than generic transcription models.

What it doesn't do well

TTS quality is functional, not remarkable. Aura-2 voices are fine for automated phone calls or IVR systems. They are not competitive with ElevenLabs or Murf for voiceover work, marketing content, or anywhere that voice quality significantly affects the listener experience.

API-only. Full stop. There is no interface, no dashboard for audio uploads, no non-developer path in. This is not a complaint — it is Deepgram's explicit positioning — but it eliminates the majority of Australian small businesses as potential users.

No Australian data residency. Audio is processed in the US (Virginia). No AU region exists. For Australian healthcare, legal, or financial services firms processing sensitive audio, this is a compliance concern under the Privacy Act 1988.

Growth tier commitment required for best pricing. The meaningful pricing discount kicks in at USD $4,000+ per year minimum. At early stages, you are on the higher pay-as-you-go rate.

Support is documentation-first. There is no AU-based support. Enterprise contracts include SLAs; smaller customers rely on documentation and community forums.

Australian fit

Deepgram's Australian fit score is low for the same structural reasons as other US API platforms.

Data: Audio is processed in the US. No AU-region servers exist. For regulated industries, this is a blocker without a self-hosted arrangement.

Pricing: USD only. GST applies to AU purchases. No AUD invoicing.

Accents: Nova-3 covers Australian English, but no AU-specific benchmarks are published. Test before committing to production.

Support: No AU presence. Documentation-led support for self-serve tiers.

Compliance: SOC 2 Type II certified. No specific AU regulatory certification.

The platform is well-suited to Australian developers and tech startups building voice AI products, where the cost efficiency and technical capability matter more than local data residency. For regulated Australian industries, the offshore data question needs to be resolved.

Alternatives

  • AssemblyAI — The most direct competitor. AssemblyAI's audio intelligence layer (summarisation, sentiment, entity detection) is more developed. Deepgram is cheaper on base STT and includes TTS in the same platform.
  • ElevenLabs — If voice quality is the priority for TTS output, ElevenLabs is in a different class to Aura. No STT, but the best voices available at this price point.
  • Play.ht — Another API-accessible TTS platform worth comparing if you're focused on outbound voice generation rather than transcription.

Bottom line

Deepgram is a cost-effective, technically capable speech AI platform that covers the full stack — STT, TTS, and voice agents — from one provider. For Australian developers building voice bots, transcription tools, or call analytics platforms, the price-to-performance ratio is hard to beat.

The ceiling on this recommendation is the AU fit problem: no local data residency, USD-only billing, and Aura TTS voices that don't match the best dedicated alternatives. If your use case requires high voice quality or local data compliance, look elsewhere for at least one piece of the stack.

For raw STT in a developer context, Deepgram is a serious contender. Test Nova-3 on your AU audio and compare accuracy against AssemblyAI before committing.

Update history
  • 9 Oct 2026 — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#498), deepgram.com/pricing read in a browser on an Australian connection: every list price in the table stands — Nova-3 pre-recorded US$0.0043 a minute, streaming US$0.0077 (list; a limited-time promotion currently shows US$0.0048), Aura-2 US$0.030 and Aura-1 US$0.015 per 1,000 characters, Voice Agent US$0.075 a minute (US$4.50 an hour), the US$200 sign-up credit and the Growth tier from US$4,000 a year. New on the page and recorded here: the Flux speech models (streaming US$0.0065–0.0078 a minute; Flux TTS US$0.045 per 1,000 characters) and Nova-3 Multilingual (US$0.0052 pre-recorded). Housekeeping in the same pass: the two STT cells in the AUD column (~A$0.0005 and ~A$0.0009) were a conversion error and now read ~A$0.006 and ~A$0.011 at the table's 1.40 basis; the vendor price did not move. USD only; aud_native: false stands. Capture: Dossiers/captures/deepgram-pricing-2026-10-09.txt.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Nothing was re-cut — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed "Approx AUD (if GST charged, +10%)" (Nova-3 STT — Batch (Pay As You Go) ~AUD $0.0006/min; Nova-3 STT — Streaming (Pay As You Go) ~AUD $0.0010/min; Aura-2 TTS (Pay As You Go) ~AUD $0.046/1K chars; Aura-1 TTS (Pay As You Go) ~AUD $0.023/1K chars; Voice Agent API ~AUD $6.93/hr). The GST position is stated in words once in the note above the pricing table. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
