The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

The verdict: remove.bg does one thing and does it exceptionally well: it removes image backgrounds automatically in under five seconds. For an Australian small business owner who needs clean product photos, headshots, or marketing imagery without touching Photoshop, it is the fastest path from messy photo to usable image. The free tier is real — you get one full-resolution credit and unlimited low-res previews to try before you buy. The catch for Australians is predictable: pricing is in USD only, there is no AUD billing, 10% GST is added at checkout via Paddle (the Merchant of Record), and your images are processed and stored in Europe. None of this makes it unusable, but it knocks points off the Australian Fit score. For occasional use, it is hard to fault. For high-volume production work, the cost per image climbs quickly if you are not on a subscription. Score: 17/25 — Very Good.

What it is

remove.bg is an AI-powered background removal tool launched in 2019 by Austrian startup Kaleido AI. Canva acquired Kaleido in February 2021, and the business now operates as Canva Austria GmbH, headquartered in Vienna. remove.bg has retained its own branding and remains a standalone product separate from Canva's main suite.

The tool does one thing: it automatically identifies the subject in an image and removes the background, leaving you with a transparent PNG ready to drop onto a new background, a website, a presentation, or a marketplace listing. No manual masking. No layer work. Upload the file, download the result. The whole process takes under five seconds for most images.

This is not a niche tool for designers. It is built for the business owner who needs 200 product photos with white backgrounds for their Shopify store, the HR manager who wants consistent headshots for the company directory, or the real estate agent who wants to lift property signboards cleanly from their marketing shots.

What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

remove.bg prices in USD. There is no AUD billing option. Australian customers pay in USD, and GST (10%) is added at checkout — remove.bg uses Paddle as its Merchant of Record, and Paddle charges Australian GST on all transactions for Australian customers.

All prices below are USD with approximate AUD conversions at a ×1.40 exchange rate.

Free tier

What you get Cost
1 full-resolution credit (one-time, on sign-up) Free
Unlimited low-resolution previews on the website Free
50 free API/app previews per month Free

The free tier is legitimate for testing. You can process unlimited low-resolution previews on the website for free — they are watermark-free but capped at 0.25 megapixels, which is usable for web but not for print.

Subscription plans (monthly, billed monthly)

A 10% discount applies when you pay annually.

Plan Credits/month USD/month Approx AUD/month Cost per image (AUD)
Starter 40 US$9 ~A$13 ~A$0.35
Pro 200 200 US$39 ~A$55 ~A$0.30
Pro 500 500 US$89 ~A$125 ~A$0.28
Pro 1,200 1,200 US$189 ~A$265 ~A$0.24
Pro 2,800 2,800 US$389 ~A$545 ~A$0.22
Pro 5,000 5,000 US$589 ~A$825 ~A$0.18
Pro 7,500 7,500 US$789 ~A$1,105 ~A$0.16

Unused subscription credits roll over month to month while your subscription remains active. Credits expire if you cancel.

Pay-as-you-go (one-time purchase, credits never expire)

Credits USD Approx AUD Cost per image (AUD)
1 US$1.99 ~A$2.79 ~A$2.79
10 US$9 ~A$13 ~A$1.40
75 US$49 ~A$69 ~A$1.01
200 US$99 ~A$139 ~A$0.77
500 US$199 ~A$279 ~A$0.62
1,200 US$399 ~A$559 ~A$0.52
4,000 US$999 ~A$1,399 ~A$0.39
8,000 US$1,699 ~A$2,379 ~A$0.33

Pay-as-you-go credits are the safer option if your image processing volume is irregular. They do not expire, so you are not locked into a monthly commitment. The cost per image is higher than subscription rates — roughly double at the entry level — but you pay nothing during quiet months.

GST note: remove.bg names Paddle as its Merchant of Record in its General Terms and Conditions. Paddle's own tax documentation confirms it charges 10% GST on Australian (B2C) transactions and issues the tax invoice. So Australian customers pay 10% GST, added at checkout, with the GST itemised on the Paddle invoice.

How it works / features

Core background removal

Upload an image via the website, the desktop app, or the API. The AI identifies the foreground subject — typically a person, product, animal, or vehicle — and removes the background within seconds. The result is a transparent PNG. You can then add a new solid colour, a blur effect, an AI-generated background, or leave it transparent for compositing.

One credit equals one full-resolution image. Preview images (low resolution) are free on the website and cost one-quarter of a credit through the desktop app, Photoshop plugin, Figma plugin, or API.

Integrations

remove.bg has built out a genuine integration ecosystem:

  • Adobe Photoshop plugin — remove backgrounds directly inside Photoshop without switching apps. Supports Photoshop CC 2021 (22.0) or later, Mac and Windows.
  • Figma plugin — available through the Figma Community.
  • Windows, Mac, and Linux desktop app — supports bulk processing. You can queue large batches and process them automatically, which makes it the right tool for e-commerce sellers with large catalogues.
  • Android app — mobile background removal for on-the-go use.
  • Zapier and Make — connect remove.bg to thousands of other apps, such as automatically processing product photos when they land in a Google Drive folder.
  • REST API — for developers building background removal into their own products or workflows.

AI background replacement

Beyond simple removal, remove.bg lets you replace backgrounds with AI-generated scenes (blurred, gradient, or scene-based) directly on the website. This is useful for quick marketing assets but does not replace a proper design tool for anything polished.

What it does well

Speed. Five seconds is not an exaggeration. For a photographer or e-commerce seller processing product shots, remove.bg is faster than any manual method and faster than most competing tools. The desktop app's bulk mode, which queues and processes large batches automatically, is legitimately useful for catalogue work.

Accuracy on clean subjects. On clear-cut subjects against reasonably distinct backgrounds — a product on a table, a person in front of a solid wall, a vehicle in a carpark — the results are excellent. Edges are clean. You do not need to refine them manually in most cases.

Photoshop integration that actually works. The Photoshop plugin eliminates the need to break out of your existing workflow. For a designer or photographer already working in Photoshop, this saves real time.

No technical skill required. The website interface requires zero design knowledge. Upload, download, done. A 60-year-old business owner who has never touched Photoshop can have a professional-looking product photo in under a minute.

Transparent pricing structure. Credits are clear, cost per image is straightforward, and the pay-as-you-go model means you are never locked into a subscription you do not need.

Where it falls short

Wispy and fine hair is a genuine weakness. Fine blonde hair, flyaway strands, and soft curls at the edges of a frame are where remove.bg's accuracy drops. You can lose hair detail, see colour bleed around the subject, or end up with a stamped, punched-out look. For headshots that require natural hair edges — a common requirement for professional portrait photography — you will often need to refine the result manually in Photoshop or a competing tool.

Semi-transparent objects trip it up. Glass, lace, net fabric, and other semi-transparent materials confuse the AI. It tends to make them opaque or cut them out entirely, losing the translucency that makes the subject look realistic.

No video background removal natively. Video background removal sits in a related but separate product, Unscreen (also by Canva Austria), which has its own pricing and credit system. If you need both, you are managing two credit balances.

The free tier is barely a trial. One full-resolution credit on sign-up lets you test the output quality once. After that, you are buying credits or subscribing. The free low-resolution previews are useful for checking if the AI will handle a particular image type, but you cannot deliver low-res results to a client or use them in print.

USD billing only. Australian customers pay in US dollars. The exchange rate risk is yours. If the AUD weakens — as it can — your effective AUD cost rises without warning.

No offline processing. All processing happens on remove.bg's servers. You need internet access for every image. The desktop app is a front-end to the same cloud service, not a local processing tool.

Australian fit

remove.bg has no specific Australian presence. Here is what that means in practice:

Billing currency: USD only. No AUD billing option. The price you see is in US dollars; your bank converts it to AUD at the prevailing exchange rate, which adds foreign transaction variability and potentially a currency conversion fee depending on your card.

GST: 10% GST is added at checkout for Australian customers. remove.bg's billing is handled by Paddle (Merchant of Record), which is GST-registered in Australia and charges GST on all Australian transactions. Your Paddle invoice will itemise the GST — it is a valid tax invoice for Australian business purposes.

Data residency: Images are uploaded to remove.bg's servers and processed in Europe. The privacy policy states data is "stored and processed in Europe and any other country in which Operator, its affiliates or service providers maintain facilities." There is no Australian data region and no option to elect one. For most product photography use cases, this is not a significant concern. For businesses with strict data sovereignty requirements — such as those handling images of people in regulated industries — offshore processing should be considered.

Image retention: remove.bg states it deletes uploaded images shortly after processing. This is a reasonable policy, and the company does offer an opt-in program for users who want to contribute images to AI training — it is opt-in, not opt-out. Still, images do leave Australia and cross into European infrastructure for the duration of processing.

Support: English only, via a self-service help centre and a contact form. No live chat, no phone support, no Australian business hours support. For a tool at this price point, that is standard rather than exceptional.

AU-aware outputs: The tool produces transparent PNGs. There is nothing Australian-specific about the output format, and none is needed — the core task is image processing, not content generation.

Summary: remove.bg is a global USD-priced tool with European data infrastructure and no Australian localisation. It works for Australians, but it does not serve them specifically. Australian Fit score: 2/5.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 4/5 Free tier is genuine; subscription pricing is competitive; pay-as-you-go is pricier but commitment-free. USD-only billing is the main friction.
Ease of Use 5/5 Upload and download. Five seconds. No instructions needed. The easiest tool in its category.
Feature Depth 3/5 Background removal, batch processing, Photoshop/Figma integrations, API and AI backgrounds are strong — but it does one job. Video needs a separate tool.
Australian Fit 2/5 USD billing only (GST added at checkout via Paddle), no AU data region, no AU support, zero Australian localisation. Works for Australians but is not built for them.
Reliability & Support 3/5 The core service is fast and reliable. Support is limited to a help centre and ticket form — no live options. English only.
Total 17/25

Displayed rating: ★★★★ Very Good (raw score 17/25 falls in the 16–20 Very Good band)

Australian Fit gate: remove.bg scores 2/5 on Australian Fit, which is below the 4/5 threshold required for an ★★★★★ Excellent rating and for a category Top Pick designation. The displayed star rating is capped at four stars. See our review methodology.

Bottom line

If you run an e-commerce business and need clean product photos fast — this is the tool. Nothing else in this price range matches remove.bg's speed and accuracy for hard-edged product subjects. The Shopify store with 200 SKUs, the jewellery maker needing white-background shots, the furniture retailer building catalogue imagery — remove.bg solves the problem in an afternoon.

If you are a photographer or creative professional producing portrait work — test it first on representative images, specifically hair shots. For subjects with fine, wispy, or backlit hair, you will likely need to refine edges in Photoshop. The Photoshop plugin helps — you can use remove.bg as a first pass and fix in-app.

If you process images occasionally — start with pay-as-you-go credits. They do not expire, so a $9 USD (~A$13) pack of 10 credits covers most ad-hoc needs without locking you into a subscription.

If your business has data sovereignty requirements — images are processed offshore in European infrastructure. For most businesses, this is a non-issue. For those in regulated sectors with specific data localisation policies, confirm the processing model with your compliance team before adopting.

If you need video background removal — remove.bg does not do it. Look at Unscreen (same company) or Runway ML.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Confirmed: remove.bg has no first-party app on the Australian App Store. Nothing published under remove.bg or kaleido.ai. The apps a search returns — Remove.bg: BG Eraser (Microloop IT Solutions LLP), Remove BG ▸ Background Eraser, Remove Bg - Background Eraser and others — use the brand name and are not the vendor; one declares a Blogspot page as its website. None is cited here, and none should be trusted with your images. The Android app this review mentions is reached through the vendor's own account, so USD pricing stands unqualified. This closes the item the 21 September app-store pass left open. Searched Apple's own Australian storefront endpoint (itunes.apple.com/search?country=au&entity=software) and matched each result on its declared sellerUrl rather than its publisher name — the method that resolved Msty (CloudStack, LLC → msty.ai) and Bluedot (Twiso Inc. → bluedothq.com) the same day, both of which the 21 September pass had recorded as untraceable. Checked 21 September 2026 by the app-store apply pass, Audits/app-store-apply-2026-09-21.md. Re-check if the vendor announces a mobile app.

Frequently asked questions

Is remove.bg available in Australia?

Yes. It's a global web tool with desktop, mobile and Photoshop/Figma plugins — Australians can use all of it. There's no Australian presence or localisation, but nothing blocks access.

Does remove.bg charge in AUD?

No. Billing is in USD only, with no AUD option. Your bank converts at the prevailing rate. However, 10% GST is added at checkout via Paddle (the Merchant of Record), itemised on a valid tax invoice for Australian business use.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

Yes, but it's thin. You get one full-resolution credit on sign-up, unlimited low-resolution website previews, and 50 free API/app previews a month. Enough to test output quality, not to deliver paid work.

Does remove.bg store data in Australia?

No. Images are uploaded and processed in Europe, with no Australian data region available. remove.bg says it deletes uploads shortly after processing. For regulated industries with data-sovereignty rules, confirm the offshore model with your compliance team.

Who is remove.bg best for?

E-commerce sellers and businesses needing clean product photos fast — it's exceptional on hard-edged subjects. Test it first for portrait work, as fine or wispy hair is a genuine weakness. For video, you'll need a separate tool.
