The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Public.com is a US brokerage app that has built genuinely interesting AI features on top of a multi-asset trading platform. Alpha, its AI research assistant, answers natural-language questions about stocks using real-time data, SEC filings, and earnings call transcripts. The AI agents feature automates recurring investment actions. None of this is accessible to Australians: Public.com does not accept clients from Australia and has no plans to launch here. Score reflects this hard stop.

What Public.com Is
Public.com is a New York-based investing app that positions itself as a multi-asset investment platform for everyday investors. It allows users to invest in US stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, and cryptocurrency from a single account. The company is operated by Public Holdings, Inc.
What sets Public apart from standard brokerage apps is its investment in AI tooling. Three AI features are central to the platform:
Alpha is an AI research assistant that answers questions about stocks and ETFs in natural language. Ask it why a stock moved on a given day, request a summary of the latest earnings call, or query analyst consensus ratings. Alpha draws on real-time market data, SEC filings, news, analyst reports, and social sentiment.
AI Agents are automated investment agents that execute recurring strategies across stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, and bonds — in taxable brokerage accounts and IRAs. No code required. Users set up logic (for example: auto-invest when cash balance exceeds a threshold, auto-buy dips in a specific stock, or rebalance on a schedule) and the agents execute.
Generated Assets let users describe a custom investment theme in text and receive an AI-generated custom index or basket of securities aligned to that theme.
Public Premium was a paid membership tier that unlocked additional research tools, advanced data suites and enhanced analyst insights on top of the free account. It is no longer offered: as at 9 October 2026 the paid tier is Public Reserve, a membership pitched on a boosted cash yield and deposit matches rather than on research tools.
What It Costs in Australia
Public.com pricing, read from public.com and its Reserve Agreement and Fee Schedule on 9 October 2026 (no currency label on the site; Public is a US broker-dealer and bills in USD):
| Plan | Cost |
|---|---|
| Public (basic) | Free — no account minimum |
| Public Reserve (replaced Public Premium) | USD $20/month, or USD $200/year (~AUD $28/month or ~AUD $280/year ex-GST at 1.40) — boosted 3.75% APY on cash, 4% IRA contribution match, 1% match on Generated Assets deposits and 0.5% on Direct Index/Treasury deposits, each capped at USD $250,000 a year |
The Reserve fee is taken from the Reserve Agreement (offer period from 22 September 2026) and the Fee Schedule (last updated 25 September 2026); the Reserve page itself shows the benefits but not the fee. The June edition's ~USD $10/month Public Premium plan no longer appears anywhere on the site, and its help-centre page has been removed. Capture: Dossiers/captures/public-com-pricing-2026-10-09.txt.
Alpha AI is available to all account holders at no charge. AI Agents are available in the standard account. Whether the analyst-grade research that Premium used to bundle has folded into Reserve or into the free account is not stated in the Reserve Agreement or the Fee Schedule.
AUD conversion at approx. 1 USD = 1.40 AUD. GST may apply to foreign digital services for Australian users — though again, this is academic because Australians cannot sign up.
How It Works in Practice
For eligible US users, the experience is:
- Open an account (US residents only; legal US address required).
- Deposit funds and invest in US stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, or crypto.
- Use Alpha to ask questions in natural language about any asset: "Why did Tesla fall 8% last Tuesday?" or "What did Apple say about iPhone sales in the last earnings call?"
- Set up AI agents to automate investment actions — recurring buys, dip-buying logic, portfolio rebalancing.
- Create a Generated Asset: type "companies transforming healthcare with AI" and receive a custom basket of securities aligned to that theme.
The platform does not charge trade commissions on stocks and ETFs. Revenue comes from the Reserve subscription, order flow arrangements (disclosed in their terms), and a fee structure on certain assets.
Public Premium added analyst-grade research tools, company KPI tracking, and an advanced data suite — broadly comparable to a stripped-down version of Bloomberg terminal features for retail investors. Its successor, Public Reserve, is sold on yield and deposit matches instead.
What It Does Well
Alpha is genuinely useful for US equity research. The ability to ask plain-language questions about stocks and receive answers grounded in real SEC filings, earnings transcripts, and analyst data is more substantive than many AI chatbot tools that hallucinate financial data. Alpha's sourcing from primary documents is a meaningful differentiator.
AI agents for automation. The AI agents feature moves beyond simple limit orders into programmatic investment logic without requiring code. For US investors comfortable with automated strategies, this is a meaningful capability.
Multi-asset in one account. US stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, and crypto in a single account is genuinely convenient for US retail investors.
No minimum and free entry point. A free account with zero minimum and Alpha access at no additional cost lowers the barrier for US users exploring the platform.
Generated Assets. Turning a text description into a custom index is an interesting innovation — a direct application of AI to portfolio construction.
What It Doesn't Do Well
Not available to Australians. This is decisive. Public.com accepts only US residents with a legal US residential address. Australians cannot create an account. BrokerChooser (secondary source) confirms Public.com does not accept clients from Australia.
US-only asset universe. Even for eligible US users, the platform covers US-listed assets only. No ASX, no international equities outside US exchanges, no global bonds.
No AFSL. Public Holdings, Inc. holds no Australian Financial Services Licence. It is not registered with ASIC. It has no legal authority to provide financial services to Australian retail clients.
AI agents carry automation risk. Automated investment agents executing trades on your behalf — even simple logic like "buy every dip" — can produce unintended results in volatile markets. Set-and-forget investing automation is not inherently safer than manual investing; it simply removes the manual step.
Conflicts of interest in order flow. Public discloses that it may receive payment for order flow on certain trade types. Australian investors accustomed to the disclosure requirements under the Corporations Act should note that US disclosure norms differ.
No track record on AI agents. AI agents are a relatively new feature. There is limited public evidence about their performance across different market conditions.
Australian Fit
Australian Fit score: 1/5
Public.com is not available to Australian residents. This is a hard stop.
Key concerns for Australians:
- Unavailable in Australia. Public.com requires a US residential address. Australians cannot sign up. BrokerChooser confirms: "Public.com does not accept clients from Australia."
- No ASX. The platform trades US-listed assets only. Australian shares are not available.
- No AFSL. Public Holdings, Inc. holds no Australian Financial Services Licence. It is not authorised to provide financial services to Australian retail clients under the Corporations Act.
- No AUD pricing. All pricing is in USD.
- Data held in the US. User financial data is subject to US law, not the Australian Privacy Act.
- CGT. Any Australian resident who circumvented geographic restrictions to access the platform would face Australian capital gains tax obligations — and would be doing so without the regulatory protections that come from using an ASIC-regulated broker.
- Not financial advice. Nothing in this review is financial or investment advice. AI investing tools, including AI agents and AI research assistants, are not a substitute for licensed advice from an AFSL-holding financial adviser.
Alternatives
Australians looking for AI-assisted investment research or personal finance tools that actually work in Australia:
- PocketSmith — NZ-founded personal finance and budgeting platform with excellent Australian bank feed support. Not an investment brokerage, but essential for the financial planning layer.
- WeMoney — Australian budgeting app that aggregates bank accounts and tracks net worth. Locally built, ASIC-aware, and free to start.
- Frollo — Open-banking budgeting tool built in Australia for Australian bank feeds and financial data.
For Australian investors who want to invest in US stocks from Australia, ASIC-regulated brokers with US market access include Interactive Brokers Australia, Stake (AU entity), and Superhero — none of which are the same as Public.com, but all of which are legally operating in Australia and hold AFSL licences. These are not reviewed here but represent the compliant path to US equity exposure for Australians.
Bottom Line
Public.com is an ambitious AI-first brokerage that has moved further than most consumer investing apps in genuinely integrating AI into the research and execution workflow. For US retail investors, Alpha and the AI agents are worth evaluating seriously.
For Australians, the review ends at the same place it always does with US-only financial platforms: you cannot use it. This is not a gap that workarounds solve — investing in securities through an unlicensed foreign broker is not a recommended approach under Australian law.
If Public.com ever achieves AFSL registration and ASX or international equity access for Australian users, the AI tooling would be worth a second look. Until then, look locally.
