The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Verdict (TL;DR): Composer is a genuinely clever platform for building and executing automated US stock trading strategies — no code required. For most users in the US, it is one of the more accessible algorithmic trading tools available. For Australians, it is irrelevant: account opening is restricted to US residents, and there is no indication of Australian expansion on the horizon. Do not subscribe expecting to trade.

Important: This review is general information only. It is not financial or investment advice. AI-driven automated trading carries significant risk of capital loss. Nothing in this review should be taken as a recommendation to invest in any strategy, asset, or platform. Speak to a licensed Australian financial adviser (AFSL holder) before making any investment decisions.

Earlier editions of this review: 26 Jun 2026 — 8/25. This is edition 2, dated 9 Oct 2026. We keep every edition so you can see how the tool and our verdict have moved — how and why.

What Composer Is

Composer is an automated trading platform that lets users build, backtest, and execute rules-based and AI-assisted trading strategies — called "symphonies" — across US stocks and ETFs. It was founded as an independent startup and is now affiliated with SoFi, the US financial services company. The broker-dealer arm, Composer Securities LLC, is registered with FINRA (the US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority).

The core idea is to democratise algorithmic trading: you describe a strategy in plain English or drag-and-drop logic blocks, and Composer handles the trade execution automatically. No Python, no API calls, no spreadsheets. You can also browse 2,000-plus community-built strategies, backtest them against historical data, and deploy with a few clicks.

It is worth being direct about what Composer is not: it is not a financial adviser, it does not guarantee returns, and past backtest performance is not indicative of future results. The platform itself makes this clear.

What It Costs in Australia

Composer pricing, read from composer.trade/pricing in a browser on an Australian connection on 9 October 2026 (the page carries no currency label; Composer is a US broker-dealer and bills in USD):

Plan Cost What you get
Starter USD $0 Automate one strategy live; strategies up to 200 nodes; build and backtest without limit; Trade with AI discovery
Advanced USD $10/month (~AUD $14/month ex-GST at 1.40) Automate up to 5 strategies; strategies up to 350 nodes; more Trade with AI usage
Pro USD $40/month, or USD $32/month billed yearly (USD $384/year; ~AUD $56/month or ~AUD $538/year ex-GST at 1.40) Automate up to 500 strategies; strategies up to 10,000 nodes; full API access; manual trade overrides; priority trade timing and support
Business Custom — book a call For business entities

In June 2026 Composer sold a single "Trading Pass" at USD $40/month or $384/year. By October 2026 that had become a four-tier ladder: the Pro tier carries the old Trading Pass price points, a new Advanced tier at USD $10/month sits between it and the free plan, and the free Starter plan now includes live automation of one strategy rather than build-only access. AUD conversions use an approximate rate of 1 USD = 1.40 AUD as of October 2026 and are shown ex-GST: a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add ~10%. Note again: the pricing above is academic for Australians because account opening requires a US residential address (see Australian Fit section below).

How It Works in Practice

Users eligible to sign up (US residents only) connect or open a brokerage account via Composer Securities LLC or one of its clearing partners (Alpaca is referenced in the help documentation). From there:

  1. Build a strategy using the no-code visual editor, or describe one in natural language to the AI assistant.
  2. Set logic blocks: entry conditions, exit conditions, rebalancing triggers, risk controls.
  3. Backtest the strategy against historical US market data.
  4. Deploy with automated execution — Composer rebalances and trades on your behalf.

Supported assets include US equities and ETFs. Options trading is also available in some account types. The platform supports individual taxable accounts, Roth IRAs, and Traditional IRAs.

The AI component helps users discover strategies from the community library, surface ideas based on performance criteria, and translate plain-English strategy descriptions into executable logic. It does not guarantee profitable outcomes. The AI surfaces strategies that have historically performed well — historical performance is not a reliable predictor of future results.

What It Does Well

No-code accessibility. If you want to run a rules-based trading strategy without writing code, Composer's visual editor is one of the more polished approaches in the market. The drag-and-drop symphony builder is intuitive.

Strategy library. Over 2,000 community-built strategies are available to browse, study, and deploy. This is genuinely useful for users who want to explore different approaches before building their own.

Backtesting. Users can test strategies against historical US market data before deploying real money. The platform applies estimated trading costs to backtest results, which is more honest than many competitors that present idealised figures.

Integrated brokerage. Composer Securities LLC handles the brokerage side, so you do not need to connect a separate account for most use cases. The subscription fee covers trading costs — no per-trade commissions.

SoFi backing. The acquisition by SoFi, a regulated US financial services company, provides some institutional credibility compared to smaller independent fintech startups.

What It Doesn't Do Well

Not available to Australians. This is the most important limitation. Composer is restricted to US residents. Australians cannot open a trading account. This is not a minor caveat — it is a complete blocker.

US equities only. Even for eligible US users, the platform covers only US stocks and ETFs. There is no support for international markets, ASX-listed securities, or global ETFs outside the US universe.

Algorithmic trading risk. Automated strategies remove human emotion from individual decisions — but they can also amplify losses in unexpected market conditions. Strategies that performed well in backtests can fail in live markets. The platform's own disclaimers acknowledge this.

Backtest optimism. Backtesting against historical data carries the risk of overfitting — strategies tuned to past market conditions may not hold up in the future. Users should treat backtest results with healthy scepticism.

Pricing clarity. Multiple promotional rates and plan tiers have circulated, and the effective price can vary. Check the official pricing page before subscribing.

No Australian support channels. There is no Australian customer support, no AU-time-zone helpdesk, and no local regulatory oversight that would apply to Australian users.

Australian Fit

Australian Fit score: 1/5

Composer is not available to Australian residents. Account opening requires a US residential address. This is confirmed by user feedback and by the platform's registration with US regulators (FINRA, SEC) — it operates as a US broker-dealer and has no Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) or ASIC registration.

Additional Australia-specific concerns:

  • No ASX coverage. The platform trades US stocks and ETFs only.
  • No AUD pricing. All fees are denominated in USD.
  • Offshore data. Data is held in the US under US privacy laws, not the Australian Privacy Act.
  • CGT. Australian residents who somehow accessed the platform would face complex capital gains tax obligations under Australian tax law. The platform provides no Australian tax reporting tools.
  • No AFSL. Composer Securities LLC holds no Australian financial services licence. It is not authorised to provide financial services to Australian retail clients.
  • Not financial advice. Nothing in this review constitutes financial or investment advice. AI-powered trading platforms are not a substitute for licensed Australian financial advice. If you are considering automated investment strategies, consult an AFSL-licensed financial adviser.

Alternatives

If you are an Australian investor looking for AI-assisted personal finance or investment tools that are actually available locally, consider:

  • PocketSmith — An NZ-founded budgeting and financial forecasting tool with strong Australian market support and bank feed integrations. Not an investment platform, but a genuinely useful tool for Australian financial planning.
  • WeMoney — An Australian fintech app for budgeting, debt tracking, and savings goals with bank-level security and local support.
  • Frollo — An Australian open-banking budgeting app that aggregates your financial accounts and provides spending insights. Built for Australian financial data.

For direct investment research (not advice), internationally available analytics platforms that cover US markets (such as Danelfin, reviewed separately) may be accessible to Australians as information tools — though they do not provide local regulatory protection.

Bottom Line

Composer is a well-designed automated trading platform for US-based investors. If you are resident in the United States and interested in algorithmic trading strategies without writing code, it is worth a look. If you are in Australia, it is not available to you and there is no workaround. Score this one accordingly.

For Australians, the practical verdict is simple: Composer is not an option. Research Australian-regulated alternatives instead.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 1/5 USD pricing, no AUD; the new USD $10 Advanced tier and the live-automation free plan are better value than the old single pass, but it is irrelevant for Australians as sign-up is blocked
Ease of Use 3/5 Strong no-code UX — but only relevant for eligible US users
Feature Depth 2/5 Solid strategy builder, backtesting, and library for US markets
Australian Fit 1/5 Not available to Australian residents. No ASX, no AFSL, no AUD
Reliability & Support 1/5 SoFi-backed; US regulatory coverage only; no AU support
Total 8/25 ⭐⭐ Below Average

The ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent rating requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. This tool scores 1/5 on Australian Fit and cannot be recommended to Australian residents.

Update history
  • 9 Oct 2026 — New edition: Composer replaced its single Trading Pass with four tiers. Was: Free tier (build only, limited live trading) and a Trading Pass at ~USD $40/month or USD $384/year. Now: Starter USD $0 (one live automated strategy), Advanced USD $10/month, Pro USD $40/month or USD $32/month billed yearly (USD $384/year), Business custom. The Pro tier keeps the old Trading Pass price points; the cheaper Advanced tier and the automation in the free plan are new. Bills in USD with no currency label on the page; aud_native: false stands. Score held at 8/25: Value for Money stays 1/5 because the pricing is still academic for Australians, who cannot open an account.
