The verdict: Photoroom is the best purpose-built AI tool for product photography at a small-business budget. Background removal is accurate, fast, and works on a phone. Batch editing genuinely cuts hours of work down to minutes. But it is a French company with no Australian data region, it trains its AI on your images by default unless you opt out, pricing is USD-only with no AUD billing or GST transparency, and its AI credit system is deliberately opaque. For an Australian sole trader selling on eBay or Etsy, this is probably the right tool. For a business that handles sensitive imagery or is serious about data compliance, take a closer look at those defaults first. Score: 14/25 — Good.
What it is
Photoroom is an AI-powered product photography platform built specifically for e-commerce. It started as a background-removal app and has expanded into a full visual editing suite: AI-generated backgrounds, virtual models, batch processing, automatic retouching, and product staging. It is used by over 300 million users worldwide and processes billions of product images a year.
The company was founded in 2019 by Matthieu Rouif and Eliot Andres and is headquartered in Paris, France. It graduated from Y Combinator's Summer 2020 batch and raised a US$43 million Series B round at a US$500 million valuation. It is profitable and used by millions of small businesses monthly — mostly sole traders and small e-commerce sellers listing on Shopify, eBay, Etsy, and similar platforms.
The core use case is clear: you photograph a product on your kitchen bench, upload it to Photoroom, and within seconds you have a clean white-background image ready to list. On the more expensive tiers, you can generate AI backgrounds, add virtual clothing models, and batch-process hundreds of products at once.
It is available as a web app, iOS app, Android app, and native Mac app (M1 chip and later).
What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)
All pricing is published in USD. There is no AUD billing option and no Australian-specific pricing page. Photoroom's pricing page FAQ states "VAT/GST is already included" in the listed price — GST is included for applicable regions including Australia.
All AUD figures below use the ×1.40 conversion rate (AUD/USD as of September 2026).
| Plan | USD/month (monthly billing) | USD/month (annual billing) | Approx. AUD/month (annual) | Key inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | US$0 | A$0 | 250 exports/month, watermarked, personal use only — no commercial use |
| Pro | US$12.99 | ~US$7.50 | ~A$10.50 | 500 batch exports/month, 1,000+ templates, HD export, commercial licence, advanced AI tools |
| Max | US$34.99 | ~US$20.83 | ~A$29.16 | Everything in Pro + superior AI models, 1,500 batch exports/month, Shopify publishing, priority support |
| Ultra x1 | US$99 | ~US$82.50 | ~A$115.50 | High-volume operations, 4,000+ batch exports, fastest processing, advanced AI workflows |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | 200,000+ images/year, SOC 2 Type 2 certified API, dedicated onboarding |
GST treatment: Included. Photoroom's pricing page FAQ states "VAT/GST is already included" in the listed price. The price shown is the price you pay — no GST is added at checkout.
Critical free-tier note: Free plan images cannot be used for commercial purposes under Photoroom's terms. If you are selling products online, the free plan is a trial — not a viable business tool.
Weekly billing is also available (Pro at US$4.99/week), which equates to roughly A$6.99/week — notably worse value than the annual rate.
How it works / features
The workflow is straightforward. You upload a product photo (from your phone camera, a DSLR, or anywhere), and Photoroom's AI identifies the product, removes the background, and delivers a clean cutout. From there you can:
- Replace the background with a solid colour, a generated AI scene, or a template
- Use Product Staging to place your product in a lifestyle context — a kitchen bench, a studio shelf, an outdoor setting — without a photoshoot
- Apply Virtual Model to generate a person wearing clothing items you have photographed flat
- Run batch processing across hundreds of images at once with consistent framing, lighting, and sizing
- Resize and export to marketplace-specific dimensions (Amazon, eBay, Shopify, Instagram)
- Auto-retouch to remove blemishes, adjust lighting, and clean up edges
The mobile app is well-designed. On an iPhone, you can photograph a product, remove the background, and export a clean image in well under two minutes. For a sole trader selling on eBay from home, that is a genuine time-saving workflow.
Background removal quality is consistently strong on simple products — packaging, clothing, homewares, electronics. It handles complex edges including hair (for portrait use), transparent elements, and intricate product details better than most competing tools. It is not perfect — edges can soften on very fine detail — but for marketplace listing purposes, the output is reliably good.
What it does well
Speed. Background removal on a standard product photo takes three to five seconds. Batch operations on 50 images maintain that pace. Compared to manually masking images in Photoshop, the time saving is not incremental — it is transformative. A task that previously required a full day of work can be completed in 20 minutes.
Product photography accuracy. The AI was trained specifically on product imagery. It handles common Australian e-commerce categories well: fashion, homewares, food packaging, electronics. The edge detection on textiles and packaging is noticeably better than general-purpose tools like Canva's background remover.
No design skills needed. The interface is built for non-designers. Templates, one-tap presets, and auto-staging mean a sole trader with no graphic design background can produce consistent, professional-looking catalogue images.
Mobile-first. The iOS and Android apps are genuinely good. You can photograph, edit, and export from a phone without ever opening a desktop application. For a small-business owner managing their own listings, this is practical.
Batch processing at Pro tier. The Pro plan (around A$12/month on annual billing) includes 500 batch exports per month and consistent template application across a catalogue. That is strong value for a small to medium product range.
Where it falls short
AI credit opacity. Photoroom publishes relative credit multipliers (Pro gets 5× the free allowance, Max gets 3× Pro) but refuses to publish the absolute number of AI credits per plan. You cannot calculate in advance whether your monthly usage will hit the generative feature cap mid-month. This is a deliberate business decision, not an oversight — and it makes budgeting impossible.
Customer support is genuinely poor. Multiple independent review sources, including Capterra and Trustpilot, report response times of several days for standard support queries, with automated responses that do not resolve issues. Priority support is only available on the Max plan (A$32/month and above). For a business relying on Photoroom for its product catalogue, this is a real operational risk.
Billing and cancellation complaints. Reported complaints include unexpected charges after free trials, difficulty cancelling subscriptions, and features disappearing between updates without notice. This is not anecdotal — it is a consistent pattern across review platforms over 2025 and 2026.
Free tier is not commercially usable. The 250 exports/month limit and mandatory watermark are expected on a free plan. What is less obvious is that Photoroom's terms explicitly prohibit commercial use on free accounts. If you test the free plan for your business, you are technically outside the terms of service.
No text generation, no general creative tools. Photoroom is purpose-built for product photography. It does not produce social media graphics, marketing copy, or multi-element designs. If you want a broader creative toolset, Canva does more (though with less product-photography accuracy).
AI trains on your images by default. More on this below.
Australian fit
Photoroom does not serve Australian users well from a compliance or billing standpoint.
Currency: USD only. No AUD billing, no AUD pricing page, no AUD on invoices.
GST: Included in the listed price. Photoroom's pricing page FAQ states "VAT/GST is already included." No GST is added at checkout. Note that as a French company billing in USD, the GST component may not be separately itemised on your invoice — verify with your accountant before claiming GST input credits.
Data residency: No Australian data region exists. Photoroom's infrastructure runs on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in unspecified regions. The privacy policy notes data may be transferred outside the European Economic Area — it makes no mention of Australia-specific data handling. Australian customer data almost certainly sits on US or European servers.
AI training default: Photoroom trains its AI on images uploaded via the consumer app by default. Australian business owners uploading product images are opting in to this by default unless they actively turn off the "Improve model for everyone" setting in account preferences. This opt-out applies only going forward — it does not retroactively remove already-processed images. If you upload photos that contain identifiable products, packaging designs, or business-sensitive imagery, be aware of this default. (API users are excluded from AI training by default — only consumer app users are opted in.)
AU support hours: No Australian support hours. No local phone line. Support is in-app chat only, with documented multi-day response times.
AU market awareness: Photoroom's templates, examples, and use cases are overwhelmingly US and European. No Australian marketplace-specific templates (e.g., eBay Australia listing dimensions) are called out. The tool works for Australian e-commerce, but it is not designed for it.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Pro at ~A$12/month annual is strong value for the core features. Free tier unusable commercially. AI credit opacity makes Max/Ultra budgeting unreliable. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | One of the easiest product photo tools available. Works on mobile, no design skills required. Workflow from photo to export is under two minutes. |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | Background removal, batch editing, AI staging, virtual models, Shopify publishing — solid, but it stays in one lane. Not a general creative suite. |
| Australian Fit | 1/5 | USD-only billing, no AUD invoicing, no AU data region, AI trains on images by default, no AU support hours, no AU-specific templates. (GST is included in the listed price, but not separately itemised for AU.) |
| Reliability & Support | 1/5 | Customer support consistently rated poor across platforms. Multi-day response times. Reports of billing errors, unexpected charges, and features removed without notice. |
| Total | 14/25 |
★★★ Good (raw 14/25)
Australian Fit gate: Photoroom scores 1/5 on Australian Fit — below the 4/5 needed for ★★★★★ Excellent or a category Top Pick, so it can't be crowned for an Australian audience. But the gate only removes the top star; it never lowers a tool below its scored band. At 14/25, Photoroom sits in the 3-star Good band on the maths. See our methodology.
Bottom line
If you are a sole trader or small e-commerce seller listing products on Shopify, eBay, Etsy, or Facebook Marketplace and you photograph your own products: Photoroom Pro at ~A$12/month (annual) is the most efficient product photography tool available at that price point. The time saving is real and immediate. Start with the free plan to test quality, then subscribe if it fits your product type.
If you handle business-sensitive imagery — branded packaging, proprietary designs, confidential products — turn off the AI training setting immediately on first login, or consider a tool with API-only access (which excludes images from training by default).
If your business has any compliance obligations around data residency, or if you need to claim GST input credits with certainty: Photoroom's documentation is insufficient. Contact their sales team before subscribing at scale, or use a tool with documented AU data handling.
If you need general creative work — social media graphics, marketing materials, multi-element designs — Photoroom is not the right tool. It does one category exceptionally well and does not try to be everything.
If you are comparing Photoroom to Canva: Canva is broader; Photoroom is better for product images specifically. If your core need is product photography, Photoroom wins on accuracy and speed. If your core need is broader digital creative work, Canva handles more use cases.

Does Photoroom charge in AUD?
No. All pricing is published in USD with no AUD billing or Australian pricing page. GST is included in the listed price per Photoroom's FAQ, but it may not be separately itemised on a USD invoice — verify with your accountant before claiming GST credits.
Is there a free plan or free trial?
Yes, but it's not commercially usable. The free plan gives 250 watermarked exports a month for personal use only — Photoroom's terms prohibit commercial use on free accounts. Pro is around A$12/month on annual billing for the commercial licence.
Does Photoroom train its AI on my images?
Yes — by default, for consumer app users. You must actively turn off the "Improve model for everyone" setting in account preferences, and the opt-out only applies going forward. API users are excluded from training by default; consumer app users are opted in.
Who is Photoroom best for?
Sole traders and small e-commerce sellers photographing their own products for Shopify, eBay, Etsy or Facebook Marketplace. It's fast and accurate at one job. For broader creative work try Canva; for sensitive imagery, turn off AI training first or use API-only access.
