Photo AI Review: AI-Generated Photos and Models by Pieter Levels

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Photo AI trains an AI model on your face and then generates photos of "you" in any setting — on a beach, in a boardroom, in Tokyo, whatever. The output quality is impressive when it works, and the subscription pricing is reasonable for heavy users. But this is the most significant biometric data use case in this review set: you are creating a persistent AI model of your own face that lives on US servers until you delete it. The privacy implications are substantial. Understand them before subscribing.

What Photo AI is
Photo AI is an AI photo and video generation service built and operated by Pieter Levels, a Dutch indie developer behind Interior AI, Nomad List, and Remote OK. The service launched in 2022 and generates approximately US$132,000 in monthly recurring revenue as a solo-founder operation — a figure Levels has shared publicly.
The core product is different from headshot generators: instead of producing a one-off batch of photos, Photo AI trains a persistent AI "character" based on your uploaded photos. Once trained, you can generate unlimited photos of that character in any scenario you can describe. You can create characters of yourself, of other people (with their consent — the platform requires you to confirm this), or of pets.
Photo AI is a Netherlands-registered business with US-based server infrastructure. Pieter Levels operates without investors or a team beyond contractors.
What it costs in Australia
Photo AI uses monthly or annual subscription pricing. Annual billing saves approximately 50% (equivalent to 6 months free).
| Plan | USD/month | AUD approx (×1.40) | Characters | Images/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | US$19 | ~A$27 | ~1–2 | Limited (unconfirmed) |
| Premium | US$49 | ~A$69 | ~5 | ~1,000 (estimate) |
| Pro | US$99 | ~A$139 | ~25 | ~5,000 (estimate) |
| Business | US$199 | ~A$279 | More | Higher (unconfirmed) |
AUD conversions at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026). Our AUD figures are conversions shown ex-GST: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow ~10% on top. Exact plan inclusions (estimate) — feature limits have changed; verify current plan details at photoai.com/pricing before subscribing.
Photo AI offers a free trial with no credit card required, which is a meaningful advantage over the headshot tools reviewed here. You can test the service before committing.
Annual billing options provide significant savings and are worth considering if you plan to use the service regularly.
How it works in practice
Photo AI's workflow is distinct from one-off headshot generators:
- Create a character. Enter details: person type (man, woman, couple, pet), age, eye colour, body type, ethnicity. Then upload 10–20 photos of the person. The AI trains a model on these inputs — this takes around 20–30 minutes.
- Generate photos. Once your character is trained, describe scenarios — "sitting at a cafe in Paris," "professional headshot on a white background," "hiking in the mountains" — and Photo AI generates photos of your character in those settings.
- Video generation. Recent updates added short AI video clip generation using your character. This is newer functionality and quality is more variable.
- Iterate and save. Images generate quickly (under 2 minutes for a batch of eight). You save what you like and can regenerate variations.
What works well: The AI character model, once trained, produces highly consistent renderings of a face across different settings. For generating social media content, marketing materials, or profile photos at scale, the subscription model makes sense.
What doesn't work well: Recent user reviews flag quality concerns with current model updates — some users report that generated images no longer closely resemble their original character. Customer support responsiveness has been criticised, with contact limited to a web form. These are live concerns as of 2026 that prospective buyers should investigate before committing.
What it does well
Persistent AI character model. You train once and generate indefinitely during your subscription. This is a fundamentally different model from one-off headshot services — it suits users who need a regular supply of AI-generated photos of themselves rather than a single batch.
Scenario flexibility. Any scenario you can describe, the tool can attempt. One-off headshot generators lock you into background and outfit libraries; Photo AI generates whatever you prompt.
Video generation. Generating short video clips featuring your AI character is a meaningful capability expansion, useful for social media content creators.
Free trial. You can test the product before paying. This is the right approach for a tool asking you to upload your face.
Transparent founder. Pieter Levels is a known, public, accessible figure in the indie tech community. He communicates openly about revenue, product direction, and limitations on X (Twitter) — which is more transparency than most AI companies offer.
What it doesn't do well
Quality consistency is a live concern. User reviews in 2026 flag that recent model changes have degraded similarity accuracy — generated photos not matching the trained character well enough. This is a significant issue for the core use case. Investigate current quality before subscribing.
Customer support is thin. Contact is through a web form only. Pieter Levels is a solo operator; support response times and quality reflect that. If you have a billing problem or a data deletion request, resolution may not be fast.
Solo-founder continuity risk. Photo AI has no team, no investors, and no corporate structure that would manage user obligations if Levels discontinues the service or sells it. Your AI character model, your subscription, and your data deletion requests all depend on one person's continued operation of the business.
No clear Australian data retention schedule. Photo AI's legal page states personal data is retained "as long as necessary to provide services." Unlike HeadshotPro, there is no explicit timeline for photo deletion. Your trained AI character model persists as long as your account exists.
Video quality is variable. The video generation feature is newer and produces less consistent results than the photo generation capability.
Australian fit: biometric data and the Privacy Act
Photo AI involves the most significant biometric data processing of any tool in this review set. You are not uploading photos for a one-off session — you are creating a persistent AI model of your face that remains active as long as your subscription continues.
What this means under Australian law:
- Biometric data classification. Photos from which your face is analysed and modelled constitute sensitive information under the Australian Privacy Act 1988. An AI model trained on your face is arguably biometric data — a digital representation of your unique physical characteristics.
- Ongoing data processing. Unlike headshot generators that delete uploads in 7–30 days, Photo AI retains your trained character model for the duration of your account. You are creating a persistent AI likeness of yourself, stored on US servers.
- US-based infrastructure. Data is processed on servers in the United States. Photo AI is a Netherlands company — so Dutch law and the GDPR framework nominally apply — but actual data processing is US-based.
- No explicit Australian Privacy Act compliance statement. The photoai.com legal page does not address Australian-specific obligations (check photoai.com/legal for the current policy).
- Data deletion. Photo AI states your data is retained for as long as necessary to provide services. To delete your character model and personal data, you would need to request deletion explicitly — verify the deletion process before subscribing.
Photo AI's own statement on biometrics: Photo AI's published terms state the service "will not use your uploaded photo for face recognition" and that any facial feature data collected to improve model quality "is not biometric data" under their classification. This is a legal distinction that does not eliminate the practical reality: you are uploading your face to train a model of your face.
For content creators and individuals: The privacy risk is real but the practical exposure depends on your use case. Uploading your own face to generate your own content is a personal choice. Go in with full understanding of what data is retained and for how long.
For any use involving other people's faces: You must have explicit, informed consent from the person whose face you upload. Using Photo AI to generate images of another person without their knowledge or consent is a Privacy Act breach and potentially a criminal matter under emerging deepfake legislation.
Alternatives
- Aragon AI — One-off batch of professional headshots; no persistent AI model; uploads deleted in 30 days; better suited to corporate headshot use cases.
- HeadshotPro — One-off session pricing; photos deleted in 7 days; no persistent character model; cleaner data handling for single-use purposes.
- Midjourney — General-purpose image generation; does not train on your specific face; useful for creative and commercial image generation that does not require your personal likeness.
Bottom line
Photo AI is an impressive piece of technology: training a persistent AI model of your face and then generating that face in unlimited scenarios is genuinely useful for content creators, social media managers, and anyone who needs a steady supply of AI-generated photos of themselves.
The business model is honest about what it is: a subscription to an AI likeness of you. The free trial is the right way to start.
The concern is the biometric data dimension. You are creating a persistent AI model of your face that lives on US servers until you delete it. Photo AI does not have the same explicit data deletion schedule as HeadshotPro. Customer support is a solo-founder web form. If you want to delete your character model and cannot get a response, your options are limited.
For Australian individuals who understand these tradeoffs and have read the privacy policy, Photo AI is a capable and fairly-priced tool. For anyone wanting to generate images of other people's faces — get explicit written consent first, every time.
Score: 13/25 — Good. Strong technology; biometric data handling needs more transparency for the Australian market.

Update history
- 21 Sep 2026 — The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table. The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: under the ATO rule our GST treatment rests on, a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. Nothing was re-cut — the ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule: the column headed "AUD if GST charged (+10%)" (Starter ~A$29; Premium ~A$75; Pro ~A$152; Business ~A$306). The GST position is now stated in words once, beneath the table, in place of the old “Australian consumers may be liable for 10% GST” note — which was true of consumers and wrong for the GST-registered businesses this publication is written for. No USD price moved and no score changed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Photo AI safe to use for Australians?
Photo AI creates a persistent AI model of your face that is stored on US-based servers for the duration of your account. This is biometric data under the Australian Privacy Act. Photo AI is a Netherlands company (operated solo by Pieter Levels) and has not published an explicit Australian Privacy Act compliance statement. For individuals who understand this and want to generate photos of themselves, the personal risk is manageable. Never upload another person's face without their explicit written consent. Delete your character model and account data explicitly if you cancel.
How much does Photo AI cost in Australia?
Photo AI subscriptions start at approximately A$27 per month (US$19) for the Starter plan. The Premium plan is approximately A$69/month (US$49), the Pro plan approximately A$139/month (US$99), and the Business plan approximately A$279/month (US$199). Annual billing saves approximately 50%. A free trial with no credit card is available. Prices are in USD and AUD conversion will vary.
What is the difference between Photo AI and a headshot generator like Aragon AI?
Headshot generators like Aragon AI produce a one-off batch of professional headshots from your selfies, then delete the uploads. Photo AI creates a persistent AI model of your face that you can use to generate photos in any scenario on an ongoing basis. Photo AI is a subscription; Aragon is one-time. Photo AI keeps your AI character model until you delete it; Aragon deletes uploads within 30 days. Photo AI is better suited to content creators who need regular AI-generated photos of themselves; Aragon is better for professionals who need a batch of corporate headshots once or twice a year.
