The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): LEAP is the most complete legal practice management platform available to Australian law firms. Its suite of AI tools — LawY for research, Matter AI for document analysis, and AI document drafting — is genuinely useful and included at no extra cost. The software is purpose-built for Australian legal practice areas, hosted in AWS Sydney, and backed by 30-plus years of local development. The price is high and the contracts are long, but for a small to mid-sized Australian firm that wants one system for everything, it's the clear market leader.
Score: 20/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good
Last reviewed: 26 June 2026 by Adam.
Important: LEAP, including its LawY AI assistant, is a legal research and practice management tool. It does not replace qualified legal advice. Output from LawY should be treated as a research starting point, verified by a practitioner before relying on it for any legal matter.
What LEAP is
LEAP is a cloud-based legal practice management platform developed in Sydney by LEAP Legal Software, which was founded in 1992 by Christian Beck. The company now serves more than 71,000 legal professionals across Australia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand.
The Australian product is purpose-built for local practice. It combines practice management, legal accounting, document assembly and management, time recording, and legal publishing into a single platform. In recent years, LEAP has built out a suite of AI tools — LawY, Matter AI, AI Prompts, and intelligent time recording — and made all of them standard inclusions in every subscription.
LEAP is aimed squarely at small to mid-sized Australian law firms. Enterprise firms can also use a large-firm version, but the typical customer is a practice of two to twenty solicitors working across common areas of law: conveyancing, family, criminal, estates, personal injury, and litigation.
What it costs in Australia
LEAP's pricing is not published openly on its website — you need to request a quote or demo. Third-party sources consistently cite a figure around AUD $339 per user per month, with some sources putting the starting price slightly higher at approximately $389 per user. An optional By Lawyers content add-on costs an additional AUD $69 per user per month.
LEAP does not appear to offer a free tier or a short-term trial. Multiple user reviews note that contracts typically run for three years, with a minimum commitment at sign-up. This is a meaningful consideration for smaller firms evaluating the platform.
All pricing is AUD-native — LEAP charges in Australian dollars. GST applies in the standard way. (per-user pricing cited from third-party review aggregators; confirm exact current pricing directly with LEAP before purchase.)
How it works in practice
LEAP operates as a desktop and cloud hybrid. Users access matters, documents, time entries, accounting, and AI tools through a single interface that also integrates with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
The AI suite works as follows:
LawY is LEAP's AI legal research assistant, integrated directly into the matter ribbon. A solicitor can ask a legal question in plain language and receive an AI-generated answer with citations. There is an optional second step — "Deep Research" — which sends the query to a verified panel of Australian lawyers who check the AI's answer before returning it. This human-in-the-loop design is the distinguishing feature of LawY versus generic AI tools. LawY does not extract information from your matter files without instruction, and PII in queries is substituted with placeholders in verified responses.
Matter AI analyses documents, emails, and notes within a matter to generate summaries, identify key issues, build chronologies, and spot errors. A solicitor handling a large property transaction or complex family law file can ask questions of their own documents rather than trawling through them manually.
AI Prompts and Generator allow users to produce matter-specific documents — letters, court documents, precedent orders — using a library of prompt templates, pulling through client and matter data automatically.
Intelligent Time Recording (AutoTime) uses AI to detect billable activity and suggest time entries, reducing the leakage that plagues small firms.
LEAP also integrates with InfoTrack for property searching and settlement, LawConnect for secure document sharing, and RapidPay for payment processing — all within the same ecosystem.
What it does well
It is genuinely all-in-one. Most small law firms running LEAP do not need another practice management system, another billing tool, another document management system, or a separate AI subscription. That consolidation has real value — in time, in training overhead, and in cost when you compare it to buying multiple products separately.
LawY's human verification layer is a genuine differentiator. The combination of AI speed and qualified-lawyer verification addresses the biggest risk with legal AI: hallucination and incorrect citations. Users report saving 10–15 hours per week using LawY for research tasks that previously required pulling out hard-copy guides or trawling databases. LEAP claims savings of up to two hours per day.
Australian practice area depth. LEAP has built out matter types for conveyancing, family law, criminal law, estates, and more — all mapped to Australian courts, forms, and legislative frameworks. This is not a US tool retrofitted for Australian solicitors. It is designed from the ground up for the way Australian law firms work.
Data is stored in Australia. LEAP uses AWS Sydney (Asia Pacific) region exclusively for Australian data. Data does not leave Australian datacentres in normal operation. The platform holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification.
Award recognition. LEAP won "Best Use of AI in Legal Tech" at the International Cloud AI Awards and was named most innovative company (medium-sized organisation) at the BOSS AFR Most Innovative Companies awards. These are credible accolades, not participation trophies.
What it doesn't do well
The price is high and contracts are long. At approximately $339 per user per month, a five-person firm is looking at roughly $20,000 per year before any add-ons. Three-year minimum contracts are a serious commitment for any small practice. This is the most consistent criticism in user reviews.
Pricing transparency is poor. The LEAP website does not publish its subscription price. In 2026, this is unusual. Firms have to request a demo to find out what they will pay, which creates friction and forces a sales conversation before a proper evaluation.
Switching costs are real. LEAP retains client data for seven years after contract end, but migrating out is reportedly difficult. Several comparison sites note this as a customer service concern.
LawY's Deep Research takes time. The human verification step — which is the feature's biggest strength — introduces a delay. Quick research questions answered instantly by AI are useful; answers that take hours to come back from a verifier are less so in a time-sensitive matter.
No published uptime SLA found. LEAP's Trust Centre and Help Centre do not appear to publish a formal uptime commitment or SLA in a way that is easily discoverable. (check LEAP Trust Centre directly for current SLA details.)
Australian fit
LEAP is about as Australian as legal software gets. Sydney headquarters, founded locally, 30-plus years serving Australian law firms, purpose-built for Australian courts and practice areas, data in AWS Sydney, and AUD-native pricing. The company acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country on its website — a small but notable gesture of local commitment.
LawY's verified answers are provided by qualified Australian lawyers, which means the research context is Australian law, not imported US or UK legal frameworks.
The only meaningful caveat: LEAP operates globally, and some infrastructure and AI processing decisions are made in the context of its international business. The AI used in LawY's initial response generation involves third-party AI systems — the verification layer is Australian, but the underlying model powering the raw AI answer is not disclosed in detail. Firms with strict data handling requirements should review the LawY privacy terms closely before submitting client information.
Australian Fit score: 5/5
Alternatives
Smokeball — Another cloud-based legal practice management tool with growing AI features, available in Australia. Generally considered LEAP's closest direct competitor. Smaller market share in Australia but worth evaluating, particularly for firms resistant to LEAP's contract length.
Lawpath — An Australian legal tech platform aimed more at SMEs needing legal documents and basic legal services, rather than law firms managing their own practice. Different use case to LEAP, but relevant if your need is document generation rather than full practice management.
Harvey — An AI tool built specifically for legal professionals, used by large law firms for research, contract review, and drafting. Not a practice management system — you still need billing, accounting, and matter management elsewhere. Enterprise-grade pricing and a different target market to LEAP.
Bottom line
LEAP is the dominant legal practice management platform in Australia for a reason. Its AI suite is well-designed, genuinely integrated, and included in the subscription price — not bolted on as a premium add-on. For a small to mid-sized Australian law firm that wants one system to run the practice, LawY's human-verified AI research alone is worth serious consideration.
The price is real and the contract terms are stiff. Do the maths carefully before signing a three-year commitment. But if LEAP fits your practice size and area of law, you are unlikely to find a more complete, more locally tailored alternative in the Australian market.
Recommended for: Small to mid-sized Australian law firms working across common areas of law who want a fully integrated practice management and AI research platform, and are prepared to commit to a multi-year subscription.
Not recommended for: Solo practitioners on tight budgets, or firms wanting to evaluate software month-to-month before committing.
