Verdict (TL;DR): Kittl is one of the better browser-based design studios for anyone making logos, t-shirt graphics, badges and poster typography. The AI image and vector tools are fast and the template library is deep. It now prices in Australian dollars, but it has no Australian data hosting, and the free tier is too crippled to judge it on. If you sell merch or run a small creative studio, the Pro plan earns its keep. Everyone else should try before they commit.

What Kittl is
Kittl is a web-based graphic design platform that sits between Canva and Adobe Illustrator. You design in the browser. Nothing to install. It leans hard into typography, vintage badge work, merch graphics and vector illustration — the stuff print-on-demand sellers and small studios make all day.
The company behind it is Kittl Technologies GmbH, based in Berlin, founded in 2020. So this is a German product, not American, and not Australian. That matters later.
The "AI-first" label is real. Kittl bundles text-to-image, text-to-vector, background removal, an image upscaler, an auto-vectoriser and a restyle tool. Under the hood it routes to a menu of third-party models — including FLUX 1.1 Pro, Google Imagen 4, Ideogram 3 and OpenAI's image model — and lets you pick one by strength. You spend "AI tokens" each time you generate. More on that below.
What it costs in Australia
Kittl shows Australian visitors its prices in Australian dollars, so there is no conversion to do. It has no Australian entity, and its pricing page does not say whether GST is included in the A$ figure or added at checkout. Under the ATO's rules a foreign digital-service provider over the threshold is expected to charge Australian consumers GST, so check the GST line on your first invoice.
| Plan | AUD per month (monthly billing) | AUD per month (annual billing) | AI tokens | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | A$0 | A$0 | 100, one-time | Up to 10 standard images, 5 projects; personal use only, no commercial licence |
| Pro | A$25 | A$17 | 2,000 a month | Commercial licence, high-resolution exports, unlimited projects |
| Expert | A$50 | A$38 | 12,000 a month | Buy extra tokens; more premium images and videos |
| Max | A$95 | A$71 | 30,000 a month | For heavy AI use at scale |
| Business | Quote-based | Quote-based | Enhanced licence | Team access, dedicated support |
Pricing source: kittl.com/pricing, read in a browser on an Australian connection on 29 September 2026. Kittl's own figures, per editor. Expert and Max token totals combine a monthly allowance with a daily top-up the page calls promotional (Expert 6,000 a month plus 200 a day; Max 12,000 plus 600), so treat the headline totals as the current offer, not a fixed entitlement. GST treatment is not stated on the page.
The commercial licence on Pro and Expert covers up to 500,000 copies across print, packaging, marketing and digital. The Business "Enhanced Licence" lifts that ceiling. For a print-on-demand seller, 500,000 is effectively unlimited.
Read the free tier closely before you get excited. Exports cap at 800px and 72 DPI, there is no commercial licence, and you must credit Kittl publicly. It is a demo, not a usable tier.
How it works in practice
You start on an infinite canvas and drop in a template, or generate from a text prompt. Type "vintage coffee roaster badge, cream and forest green" and Kittl returns image options in seconds — usually under a minute even for fussy prompts.
The part that genuinely saves time is the workflow chain. Generate an image, vectorise it to clean editable paths, remove the background, then drop it onto a t-shirt mockup — all without leaving the tab or touching Illustrator. For someone who currently bounces between three tools, that is real minutes back per design.
Typography is the standout. Over 1,400 commercially licensed fonts, proper OpenType support, ligatures and glyphs, plus the curved-text and warp tools that vintage-badge work depends on. This is where Kittl beats Canva outright.
The token model is the friction. Every AI action spends tokens, and a single image generation costs more than one token. Heavy AI users on Pro will watch the meter. If your work is mostly AI generation rather than manual design, budget for Expert or expect to ration.
What it does well
- Typography and badge design. 1,400+ licensed fonts, real OpenType controls, curve and warp tools. The best in this price bracket for merch and poster lettering.
- A real AI workflow, not a gimmick. Generate, vectorise, upscale, restyle and background-remove in one place. The chained workflow is the actual value.
- Model choice. Letting you pick FLUX, Imagen 4 or Ideogram per job is smart — Ideogram for text-in-image, FLUX for photoreal.
- Browser-based, low commitment. Works on a laptop or tablet with no install. Good for non-technical owners who fear Adobe.
- Honest commercial licence. The 500,000-copy licence on paid tiers is generous and clearly stated — important for anyone selling what they make.
What it doesn't do well
- Dearer than our June figures suggested. Pro is A$25 a month, or A$17 on annual billing — above the ~A$21 and ~A$14 our old USD conversion showed — and GST treatment on the A$ price is not stated.
- No Australian data hosting. Kittl is a German company and discloses nothing about Australian data residency. Your designs and uploads sit on overseas servers; Kittl does not publish a server-location or sub-processor list on its public legal or privacy pages, so even the hosting region is undisclosed.
- Token anxiety. The credit system means heavy AI use bumps you toward the A$50/mo Expert tier fast. The pricing looks cheaper than it behaves.
- The free tier is near-useless. 800px exports, no commercial licence and forced credit mean you cannot actually evaluate output quality on free.
- Not a full design suite. No real photo editing, no multi-page documents, weaker for social-media-kit and presentation work than Canva. It is a focused tool, not an all-rounder.
Australian fit
This is where Kittl loses points, though fewer than it did. It now shows Australians prices in Australian dollars (Pro A$25 a month, A$17 on annual billing), so the exchange-rate risk has gone. But there is no Australian support presence, and no published Australian (or even named-region) data residency. For a design tool that question is lower-stakes than it would be for a finance or legal product — you are storing logos and t-shirt art, not client tax files — but it still counts against a publication that puts Australian fit first.
GST is the open question: as an imported digital service, Kittl is the kind of provider the ATO's rules expect to charge 10% GST, but its pricing page does not say whether the A$ figures include it. Keep the invoices and check the GST line — if Kittl charges it and you are GST-registered, that's a credit you can claim.
Output quality is global-neutral, which is fine. Kittl doesn't need local awareness to draw a good badge. But you are buying an offshore tool, with your assets hosted offshore. Go in knowing that.
Alternatives
- Canva — bills in AUD, has an Australian presence, and is the better all-rounder for social kits, docs and presentations. Weaker on serious typography and vector badge work. For most Australian small businesses, still the default.
- Adobe Firefly — stronger generative AI and commercially safe training data, inside the Adobe ecosystem. Pricier and heavier. Better if you already live in Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Ideogram — if your need is purely AI image and text generation rather than a full editor, Ideogram does the generation Kittl routes to anyway, more cheaply.
Bottom line
Kittl is a very good, focused design studio that does typography, badge work and merch graphics better than anything else at this price. The AI tools are quick and the chained workflow saves real time. If you sell print-on-demand or run a small creative studio, the Pro plan at A$17 a month on annual billing is easy to justify.
What stops it short of a top recommendation is the rest of the Australian story: AUD pricing now, but no AU support, no published AU data hosting, and a token system that nudges costs up quietly. For a Melbourne studio that wants local support and an Australian company, Canva remains the safer home base. For the merch maker who values typography and AI speed above all, Kittl is worth the offshore trade-off. Try it on a paid month — the free tier won't tell you anything.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Pro at A$17/mo annual (A$25 monthly) is fair for the toolset; tokens add hidden cost on heavy AI use. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Browser-based, drag-and-drop, fast to first result; token model adds a small learning curve. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Excellent typography, vector and chained AI workflow; not a full suite (no real photo edit, no multi-page docs). |
| Australian Fit | 3/5 | Native AUD pricing (was 2/5 on a USD reading in June); still no AU support and no published AU data residency; GST treatment not stated. |
| Reliability & Support | 2/5 | Established 2020 product, but support is online-only with no AU presence, and Kittl publishes no uptime or SLA commitment we could assess. |
| Total | 17/25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
Australian Fit gate: not triggered — raw total of 17 sits in the four-star band, and Australian Fit (3/5) keeps it there regardless.
Update history
- 29 Sep 2026 — Kittl prices in AUD for Australians, and this review said it billed in USD only. Score 16 → 17/25, Australian Fit 2 → 3/5. kittl.com/pricing, read in the in-app browser on an Australian connection: Free A$0; Pro A$25 a month, or A$17 a month billed annually (was quoted as US$15 / US$10, ~A$21 / ~A$14); Expert A$50, or A$38 annually (was US$30 / US$24, ~A$42 / ~A$34); and a new Max tier at A$95, or A$71 annually. Seven
A$strings render in the plan cards. Token allowances are now published: Free 100 one-time, Pro 2,000 a month, Expert 12,000, Max 30,000. The page's embedded schema still sayspriceCurrency: USD, which is what a scripted fetch sees; the prices a browser in Australia shows are A$. We cannot tell whether Australians were shown A$ in June, so we record this as our June read being wrong or overtaken, not as a vendor change. Kittl still does not state whether GST is included. Pricing section, weaknesses, Australian fit, bottom line, score table and FAQ (body and schema) rewritten; the Recraft-vs-Kittl comparison and the logo-makers roundup synced. - 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kittl available in Australia?
Yes. It's a browser-based design platform with no install and no geographic restriction. But it's a German company with no Australian support presence, so help is online-only with no AU hours.
Does Kittl charge in AUD?
Yes. Kittl's pricing page shows Australian visitors prices in AUD: Pro A$25 a month or A$17 on annual billing, Expert A$50 or A$38, Max A$95 or A$71. It doesn't say whether GST is included, so check the GST line on your invoice.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, but it's near-useless for real work — exports cap at 800px and 72 DPI, there's no commercial licence, and you must credit Kittl publicly. Treat it as a demo. Pro (A$25/mo, A$17 on annual billing) and Expert (A$50/mo, A$38 annual) carry a full commercial licence covering up to 500,000 copies.
Where are my designs stored?
Undisclosed. Kittl is a German company and publishes no Australian (or even named-region) data residency, server-location or sub-processor list on its public legal pages, so even the hosting region is unknown. For logos and merch art that's lower-stakes than for client tax files, but go in knowing it.
Kittl or Canva for an Australian creator?
Canva for most small businesses — it bills in AUD, has an Australian presence and is the better all-rounder. Choose Kittl if typography, badge work and AI-generated merch graphics are your priority and you'll wear the offshore trade-off.

Secondary sources were used only to cross-check token allowances. They disagreed with each other — the Free grant is consistently described as a one-time, non-renewable allocation, but the per-month figures for the Pro and Expert tiers differed source to source, so we describe the allowance in words rather than quote a number we could not confirm against the vendor's own page.
