⚠️ PRICING NOT VENDOR-VERIFIED — 6 September 2026. Clipdrop's pricing page renders the Pro price as "- -" and the API pricing page carries no figures (re-checked 6 September 2026). The Pro and API figures below are third-party estimates and are labelled as such; the free-tier limits are read from the vendor page. Treat every price in this review as indicative, confirm the live figure at checkout, and read the verdict knowing the pricing criterion rests on unconfirmed numbers. See our Verification Standard.
Verdict (TL;DR): Clipdrop is a focused set of AI image editing tools — background removal, cleanup, relighting, upscaling, uncropping — rather than a full text-to-image generator. It does those specific tasks well. The free tier is genuinely useful: 20 background removals and upscales per day, with no credit card required. The Pro plan adds high-resolution outputs, 1,000 operations per day, and a commercial licence. Pricing is in US dollars (Pro at approximately US$9–$15/month (the live pricing page shows "--" at time of review — check clipdrop.co/pricing before subscribing)), and there is no Australian data residency. Owned since February 2024 by Jasper, a US content marketing company. If you need a reliable, no-fuss background remover or object eraser with API access, Clipdrop earns its place. If you want to generate images from scratch, look elsewhere.

Score: 14/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good

What Clipdrop is

Clipdrop started life in 2020 as a clever augmented-reality app that let you photograph objects and paste them into design software. French founders Cyril Diagne and Jonathan Blanchet built it under the company InitML, based in Paris. Stability AI acquired it in 2023 and used it as the consumer face of Stable Diffusion. In February 2024, Jasper — a US AI content marketing platform — acquired Clipdrop from Stability AI.

That ownership history matters. Clipdrop now sits under a content marketing company's umbrella, and while the tools themselves continue to work, the product roadmap and strategic investment sit with Jasper's broader platform. The Clipdrop site currently redirects users who want "newer models" to Jasper's developer API — a signal of where the energy is going.

The core tools available at clipdrop.co are:

  • Remove Background — isolate subjects from photos
  • Cleanup — remove objects, people, or text from images using inpainting
  • Relight — change the lighting on a product or portrait shot
  • Image Upscaler — upscale up to 16× on Pro (2× on free tier)
  • Replace Background — remove and replace in one step
  • Text Remover — erase text overlaid on images
  • Uncrop — generative extension of image borders
  • Text to Image — basic Stable Diffusion generation, version undisclosed (daily limit applies)

The API is the most interesting part for developers: usage-based pricing per call, with different rates per tool (approximately US$0.002 per background removal, US$0.005 per text-to-image generation (check clipdrop.co/apis/pricing for current rates)).

What it costs in Australia

Clipdrop bills in US dollars. GST is not included — Australian customers may have GST added at checkout depending on Jasper's billing configuration.

Plan Price (USD/month) AUD approx. ex-GST (×1.4045) Key limits
Free US$0 — 20 ops/day most tools; watermarked; personal use only
Pro US$9–$15 (not confirmed by the vendor) ~AUD$13–$21 1,000 ops/day; HD output; commercial licence
API Usage-based Varies ~US$0.002/background removal (third-party estimate — not published by the vendor)

The Pro price was listed as "--" on the live pricing page at the time of review. Independent sources report it at US$9–$15/month. Verify at clipdrop.co/pricing before purchasing.

There is no AUD-native pricing. Clipdrop does not offer an annual-billing discount that is publicly displayed.

How it works in practice

Sign up with an email address — no credit card needed for the free tier. The interface is tool-by-tool: you go to clipdrop.co, choose the operation you want (cleanup, relight, etc.), upload your image, and get a result in seconds. There is no unified workspace or project system.

The background remover is accurate on clean subjects. It handles hair and fine edges better than many free alternatives. The Cleanup tool works well on simple removals — a piece of litter in the foreground, a logo on a wall — but struggles with complex textures behind the removed object.

Relight is the most distinctive tool in the suite. You can add or move light sources on a portrait or product shot without re-photographing. A marketer with product images taken on a plain background can add a dramatic side light or warm fill in under a minute. It is genuinely useful and not widely replicated elsewhere at this price point.

The Upscaler at 16× on Pro produces usable results for web and social, though it adds detail by inference rather than pure interpolation — results can look over-sharpened on faces.

Text to Image (Stability AI's Stable Diffusion; Clipdrop does not say which version) is basic. It generates images, but the output quality sits well below dedicated generators like Midjourney or Flux. It is not why you would choose Clipdrop.

The API is the strongest selling point for technical teams: clean endpoints, per-call billing, and integration docs that actually work. Rate limits apply (10 requests/minute on free API keys, 60/minute on Pro keys, custom enterprise rates available).

What it does well

Background removal at scale. The API makes Clipdrop a practical choice for e-commerce teams that need to process hundreds of product images programmatically. Batch via the API, pipe results into your CMS.

Relight. There is no easier way to adjust lighting on a finished product photo. A photographer or small marketing team can fix a flat studio shot in under a minute.

Genuinely useful free tier. Twenty background removals per day covers most casual needs. No credit card, no nag screen on the first upload. Watermarked outputs on the free tier, but useful for prototyping.

Cleanup tool for quick fixes. Removing a tourist from the background, a power line from a property photo, or a stain from a fabric shot takes seconds.

What it doesn't do well

Image generation is weak. The Text to Image tool runs Stability AI's Stable Diffusion, and Clipdrop no longer says which version — its product page names only "Clipdrop Stable Diffusion" and its API docs name no model at all (both checked 21 September 2026). Judge it on what comes out: compared to Flux, Midjourney v6, or even the free tier of Ideogram, the output quality is noticeably lower. Clipdrop is not a creative generation tool.

Ownership uncertainty creates risk. Clipdrop is owned by Jasper, which is primarily a text-content company. The product is being steered toward Jasper's developer API, and the consumer site shows signs of reduced active development. The pricing page displays "--" instead of an actual Pro price, which is not a hallmark of active product maintenance.

No workspace or project management. Every session is stateless. There is no way to save, organise, or revisit previous outputs from within the tool. For a professional workflow this is a limitation.

No meaningful Australian support. Support is via email (clipdrop-support@jasper.ai). There is no AU phone line, no AEST business-hours coverage, and no local account management.

Data leaves Australia. Clipdrop/Jasper infrastructure is US-based. Uploaded images are processed on US servers. For businesses handling client photography or sensitive product imagery, this is worth noting.

Australian fit: commercial licensing, IP, and data residency

Commercial licence: The Pro plan includes a commercial licence. The free tier restricts outputs to personal use only. (review the current terms at clipdrop.co/terms-visitor before using free-tier outputs commercially.)

Training data and IP: Clipdrop's image editing tools (background removal, cleanup, relight) operate on your uploaded images — they are not generative in the traditional sense. The text-to-image tool uses a Stability AI Stable Diffusion model; Clipdrop does not publish the version. Stability AI has faced legal challenges in the US regarding training data for Stable Diffusion, including a class-action complaint from artists. Australian businesses using Stable Diffusion-generated images in advertising should be aware of this ongoing litigation context, even though Australian law does not have a direct equivalent ruling yet. The ACCC has not specifically addressed AI-generated imagery in advertising, but the Australian Consumer Law's prohibition on misleading conduct applies — labelling AI imagery as photography in ads would be a concern.

Data residency: No Australian data residency. Images are processed on servers operated by Jasper/InitML infrastructure in the United States. No GDPR-equivalent coverage under Australian Privacy Act.

GST: Not itemised by the vendor. Under ATO rules a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow about 10% on top.

Alternatives

If you want a full AI image generation suite rather than an editing toolkit:

Bottom line

Clipdrop is a competent, focused image editing toolkit with an API that works well for e-commerce and product photography pipelines. The free tier is genuinely useful, the Relight tool is its best differentiator, and the background remover is reliable. But it is not a creative image generator, the Pro pricing is opaque at time of writing, and the product's future direction appears to be folding into Jasper's platform rather than expanding as a standalone tool. For most Australian small businesses, Canva Magic Studio or Adobe Firefly will serve broader needs better. Clipdrop is worth knowing for its API and its Relight tool — for everything else, there are better options.

Update history
  • 9 Oct 2026 — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#477), clipdrop.co/pricing read on an Australian connection: the Pro price and trial length still render as dashes ("- - per month", "Start - days Free trial"), exactly as on 6 September, so the vendor still publishes no Pro figure and the third-party US$9–15 range above stays unconfirmed. No claims re-verified this pass; aud_native: false stands. Capture: Dossiers/captures/clipdrop-pricing-2026-10-09.txt.
  • 9 Oct 2026 — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — A duplicate AUD column removed — the 6 September re-basing rebased the GST column instead of deleting it. The table carried two AUD columns holding identical figures, under a header that still described the second as a 10% gross-up. Every figure in it was already the ex-GST conversion, so no number changed; the column said something the column did not contain. Under our GST rule our conversions are shown ex-GST and the GST position is stated in words once, so the surviving column is headed ex-GST at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026). No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
  • 21 Sep 2026 — The "Stable Diffusion XL" version claim has been dropped as unverifiable. This review named Clipdrop's text-to-image engine as Stable Diffusion XL in five places. Clipdrop no longer publishes a version: its product page says only "Clipdrop Stable Diffusion" (clipdrop.co/text-to-image) and its API documentation for the Text to Image endpoint names no model at all (clipdrop.co/apis/docs/text-to-image), both read 21 September 2026. Under our sourcing rules we cannot keep a version we cannot source, so the claim now names the family (Stability AI's Stable Diffusion) and says the version is undisclosed. The judgement that generation is the weak half of the product is unchanged — it rests on output quality against Flux, Midjourney and Ideogram, not on a version number — so Feature Depth holds at 3/5 and the score holds at 14/25. The training-data litigation context is unchanged and still applies to the Stable Diffusion family. Found by Audits/model-claims-sweep-2026-09-21.md. Frequently asked questions

Is Clipdrop free to use in Australia?

Yes. Clipdrop offers a free tier with up to 20 background removals, upscales, and cleanup operations per 24 hours, plus unlimited text-to-image generation. No credit card required. Free-tier outputs are watermarked and restricted to personal (non-commercial) use. The Pro plan removes watermarks, unlocks high-resolution outputs, and includes a commercial licence — but pricing is listed as undisclosed on the site at time of review. Check clipdrop.co/pricing for the current rate.

Can I use Clipdrop images commercially in Australia?

The Pro plan includes a commercial licence. Free-tier outputs are for personal use only. Clipdrop's text-to-image tool uses Stability AI's Stable Diffusion (version undisclosed), a model family that has faced training-data litigation in the US. Australian businesses using Stable Diffusion-generated images in advertising should review the current terms and consider consulting a lawyer about IP risk, particularly in the context of the Australian Consumer Law and any ongoing international litigation that may affect commercial use rights.

Who owns Clipdrop now, and is it still being developed?

Clipdrop is owned by Jasper, a US AI content marketing company, which acquired it from Stability AI in February 2024. The tool remains operational, but the site is directing users who want newer AI models to Jasper's developer API. The pricing page showed undisclosed Pro pricing at time of review, which suggests reduced active maintenance of the consumer product.
