Notion AI vs Coda AI for Australians 2026: Which Workspace AI Wins?

By Adam · 25 Jun 2026 · 12 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Notion AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Winner: Notion AI for most Australian teams — it's the deeper, more polished workspace AI, with AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and a real agent platform that Coda can't match. Pick Coda AI — now sold as Superhuman Docs — if you're already in Coda and want the cheaper bundle: AI on every paid plan from about A$16.80/Doc Maker ex-GST, with free Editors and Viewers under Maker Billing. Notion scores 17/25, Coda 14/25 (was 15/25 — we cut Coda’s Value for Money to 4/5 on 21 September 2026), and both land on Australian Fit 2/5 — so neither clears our gate to be a category Top Pick.

Last reviewed: 20 September 2026 by Adam.

⚠ Update — 20 September 2026: Coda is now Superhuman Docs, and its prices moved. The rename landed on 8 July 2026 and coda.io/pricing now redirects to superhuman.com/plans/docs. Pro rose from US$10 to US$12 per Doc Maker per month on annual billing (about A$16.80 ex-GST, was about A$14.00), and the Team tier was renamed Business and rose from US$30 to US$33 (about A$46.20, was about A$42.00). More importantly for this comparison, Superhuman paused the Coda AI credit system on 6 July 2026 — the 2,000, 6,000 and 12,000 monthly allowances quoted below no longer apply. Existing subscribers keep their current plan and price. The Coda figures here have been corrected; the Notion figures are carried from 25 June 2026 and were not re-checked today. This head-to-head is flagged for a re-run.

These are the two all-in-one workspaces Australian small teams actually choose between — docs, wikis and databases in one place, with AI now baked into both. Notion AI and Coda AI do the same broad job: answer questions against your own pages, draft and summarise, and run tasks across your workspace. They split on two things that matter. Notion is the deeper, more refined product with the stronger feature set; Coda is the cheaper bundle that charges fewer people. Where you already work, and how much you want to spend, should decide it.

What both tools actually do

Both are workspaces first and AI tools second. You write docs, build wiki pages, and run tables that behave like databases — and the AI layer sits across all of it, answering against your own content rather than a generic web search. Both let you chat with your workspace, draft and summarise on a page, and push AI work across structured data. Neither is a standalone assistant: if your team doesn't already want the workspace, you're paying for the workspace and getting the AI thrown in. For both, the honest advice is the same — buy ChatGPT or Claude direct if you're shopping for AI in isolation.

Notion AI is the more mature surface. It covers AI chat against your pages and connected apps, Notion Agent and Custom Agents for multi-step automation, AI Meeting Notes with custom-instruction summaries, Enterprise Search across Slack, Google Drive, Teams and GitHub, plus Research Mode and a developer platform that landed with Notion 3.5 in May 2026. The vendor is Notion Labs in San Francisco, with no Australian office. The product feels finished, and the pace of improvement through 2026 has been real.

Coda AI is the leaner, cheaper sibling. Four surfaces: AI Chat in the doc, AI Assistant for generating and summarising, AI Column to run an instruction across every row of a table, and AI Blocks for embeddable components. Above them sits Coda Brain, a Snowflake-powered enterprise knowledge layer — but it has been in limited beta since June 2024 with no GA date. Coda is one of four products in the Superhuman Suite, after Grammarly bought it in December 2024 and renamed itself Superhuman in October 2025. On 8 July 2026 the product itself was renamed Superhuman Docs. Everything you built still works — the vendor's line is "an evolution, not a replacement" — but the name, the URL and the pricing page have all moved to superhuman.com.

In short: Notion gives you more, more polished; Coda gives you the same core idea for less money and charges fewer people for it.

Pricing in Australia

Neither tool bills in Australian dollars. Both list USD only, with no currency selector. We convert at 1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 20 September 2026, shown ex-GST; treat the AUD columns as estimates that move with the exchange rate and any card conversion fee. The Coda figures were re-verified on 20 September 2026; the Notion figures are carried from 25 June 2026.

Notion AI is gated behind the Business plan. Free and Plus get only a "Trial of Notion AI" — no Agent, no AI Meeting Notes, no Enterprise Search. The full stack arrives at Business: US$20/seat/month, about A$28 ex-GST. For a five-person Melbourne team that's roughly A$170/month, USD-billed. GST is handled correctly — Notion charges it at checkout on consumer accounts, and a valid 11-digit ABN entered in Settings removes it on subsequent invoices. Custom Agents are credit-metered from May 2026 at US$10 per 1,000 credits (about A$14), so a busy agent on every page change can quietly build a bill.

Coda AI — now Superhuman Docs — is still the cheaper bundle, but by less than it was. AI is included on every paid plan. Pro is US$12 per Doc Maker per month on annual billing, about A$16.80 ex-GST, up from US$10 and about A$14.00. The tier formerly called Team is now Business at US$33, about A$46.20, up from US$30 and about A$42.00. Enterprise remains custom. Existing subscribers keep their old plan and price.

The trick is still Maker Billing — only Doc Makers pay a seat, while Editors and Viewers are free with no head-count cap. A five-person consultancy with two doc-builders and three editors pays for two seats, total.

The credit maths that made this comparison lopsided no longer applies. On 6 July 2026 Superhuman paused the Coda AI credit system, so the 2,000, 6,000 and 12,000 monthly allowances are gone. During the Docs AI beta, paid Doc Makers get limits described only as "generous", and the published top-ups are paused with pro-rated credit returned. You can no longer compare Coda against Notion on credits, because Superhuman has stopped publishing a number. GST is still the weak spot: only a generic Tax ID field for your ABN, with no AU-specific documentation, so verify the line-item on your first invoice.

The honest read: at the entry point Coda is still cheaper, but the gap narrowed — about A$16.80 for full AI against A$28 — and Maker Billing widens it again for read-heavy teams. You pay for that with a thinner feature set, a worse reliability and residency story, and now an AI allowance the vendor won't quantify. Coda wins the budget line; Notion wins the product.

Where Notion AI wins

  • AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search. Auto-transcription with custom-instruction summaries, plus search across Notion and connected apps like Slack, Drive, Teams and GitHub. These two features alone do enough work to justify the cost for a team of five or more, and Coda has no real equivalent.
  • A genuine agent platform. Notion Agent and Custom Agents run multi-step workflows on schedules and triggers, with a model lineup updated through 2026. Coda's AI surfaces are useful but shallower by comparison.
  • The more polished, finished product. Notion AI feels mature; the chat, page summaries and agents are intuitive if you already know Notion. The pace of shipping — Custom Agents GA in February, faster models in April, the developer platform in May — shows a tool being actively pushed forward.
  • A residency map that at least exists. US default, with EU live and Tokyo plus Seoul launching for Enterprise. Still no Sydney, but Coda has no regional roadmap at all.
  • Documented GST handling. Notion charges GST correctly and removes it on a valid ABN, with a help page that spells out the mechanic. That's the bar, not a strength — but Coda doesn't even document it.

Where Coda AI wins

  • The cheaper workspace-AI bundle. AI included on every paid plan from about A$16.80/Doc Maker ex-GST, against Notion paywalling the full stack into Business at about A$28/seat. For a Coda-native team, switching the AI on costs nothing extra — though the published credit allowance was withdrawn in July 2026.
  • Maker Billing punishes nobody for adding readers. Only Doc Makers pay; Editors and Viewers are free with no cap. For a small consultancy with two doc-builders and a roomful of clients or contractors who only consume, the per-month maths is unusually friendly — and Notion has no equivalent.
  • AI Column at scale. Apply one AI instruction across every row of a table — classify hundreds of feedback entries, summarise inbound briefs, draft per-row outreach. This is where Coda's database DNA pays off, and where Notion AI still doesn't compete on the same terms.
  • Coda MCP for interoperability. Coda's Model Context Protocol server lets ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor read and write Coda docs through one OAuth connection — real value for teams running multiple AI clients.
  • Lower stakes to try. Free Editors and Viewers plus AI on the entry paid plan means a Coda-native team can switch the AI on and find out whether it earns its keep without restructuring the bill.

Australian fit: 2/5 vs 2/5 — and why neither is a Top Pick

Both tools score 2/5 on Australian Fit, and it's worth being precise about why they land level despite different strengths. Both bill USD-only, neither has an Australian office or local-hours support, and neither holds an IRAP listing — those shared gaps cap them both. Where they differ is at the margins: Notion is the better answer on GST and data residency, handling GST correctly with an ABN exemption and at least having a regional map (EU live, Tokyo and Seoul launching). Coda's only edge is price — but cheapness isn't Australian fit, and on the structural questions an Australian buyer should ask, Coda is silent: US-only hosting with no EU, no Tokyo, no Sydney even on the roadmap, GST undocumented, and trust documentation spread across three vendor domains. Net, Notion's better fit is offset by its higher price and Coda's better price is offset by its weaker posture — they land at the same 2/5 for different reasons.

Under our Australian Fit gate, a five-star rating and a category Top Pick both require an Australian Fit of at least 4/5. At 2/5, neither Notion AI nor Coda AI can be named our category Top Pick — and in this category, the local champion that clears the gate is Atlassian Rovo, with its Sydney-founded vendor, Sydney AWS residency and IRAP PROTECTED platform. Notion and Coda are honest workspace-AI tools doing a real job; neither is the sovereign-data answer an Australian regulated buyer needs.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You already live in Notion → Notion AI. The AI knows your context, and AI Meeting Notes plus Enterprise Search earn the Business upgrade for a team of five or more.
  • You already live in Coda → Coda AI. Turn it on; it costs nothing extra, and Maker Billing scales painlessly across read-heavy teams.
  • You want the cheapest bundle and have lots of read-only users → Coda AI. Free Editors and Viewers under Maker Billing make it the friendliest per-team maths on the table.
  • You want the deepest, most polished workspace AI → Notion AI. The agent platform, meeting notes and enterprise search are a clear step up.
  • You run structured-data workflows — lead lists, feedback tables, content pipelines → Coda AI. AI Column across every row is the one place Coda genuinely outclasses Notion.
  • You have AU data-sovereignty or IRAP obligations → neither. Look at Atlassian Rovo, which clears our gate on AU credentials.
  • You're shopping for an AI tool in isolation → neither — buy ChatGPT or Claude direct. Both of these are workspaces first.

The verdict

Winner: Notion AI, for the typical Australian team. Both are workspace-AI tools that work fine day-to-day, but Notion is the better product — deeper, more polished, and still shipping fast. AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search do real work, the agent platform is genuinely useful, and the GST and residency stories, while imperfect, are at least there. At about A$28/seat ex-GST on Business, it's defensible for a Notion-native team and hard to recommend for anyone else.

But Coda AI is still the better pick on price — and the right call if you're already in Coda or you have a small core of doc-builders and a wide pool of readers. AI on every paid plan from about A$16.80/Doc Maker ex-GST, with free Editors and Viewers, keeps it the cheaper workspace-AI bundle, and AI Column is genuinely better than anything Notion offers for structured-data work. Note the name: you are buying Superhuman Docs now. The honest framing: choose by where your team already works and how your seats break down. Notion if you want the stronger tool; Coda if you want the cheaper bundle and the per-team maths to match. Two real workspaces with real AI — separated by depth on one side and by price on the other, and both still short of the Australian-fit bar this category keeps failing to clear.

Frequently asked questions

Are Notion AI and Coda AI available in Australia?

Yes — both are global products with no geographic restriction, and Australian teams can use them normally. Notion Labs is in San Francisco; Coda is now part of Superhuman in the US. Neither has an Australian office, and support runs through web and in-app channels with no AU-region hours.

Which is cheaper, Notion AI or Coda AI?

Coda, still — though by less than it was. Full Coda AI, now sold as Superhuman Docs, starts at about A$16.80/Doc Maker/month ex-GST (US$12 annual on Pro, up from US$10), and only Doc Makers pay — Editors and Viewers are free. Full Notion AI is gated behind the Business plan at about A$28/seat/month (US$20), and every seat pays. For read-heavy teams the gap is wider still.

Do they charge in AUD?

No. Both list USD only with no currency selector, so your card converts at the bank's FX rate. Notion handles GST correctly and removes it on a valid ABN; Coda offers only a generic Tax ID field with no AU-specific documentation, so check your first invoice.

Where does each store my data, and is there an Australian option?

Neither stores data in Australia. Notion defaults to US hosting with EU live and Tokyo plus Seoul launching for Enterprise — but no Sydney on the roadmap. Coda is US-only with no EU, Tokyo or Sydney option at all. Neither holds an IRAP listing, which rules both out for AU public-sector and regulated work.

Which is better for Australians?

Notion AI scores 17/25 and Coda AI 14/25, but both land on Australian Fit 2/5 — Notion edges it on GST and residency, Coda only on price. Under our Australian Fit gate, neither can be the category Top Pick at 2/5. For AU credentials, Atlassian Rovo is the closer match.
