ℹ NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. Google renamed it in July 2026; it is the same product, and existing notebooks still work. This page uses the current name. (Google's own FAQ, read at primary 23 September 2026.)
Winner: Gemini Notebook for most people — it's free, bills in AUD, and is the best tool going for getting answers out of documents you already have. Pick Reflect if you want a fast, end-to-end encrypted personal notebook and privacy matters more than price.

What both tools actually do
They're both "AI notebooks," but they solve opposite problems. Gemini Notebook is Google's grounded research tool. You upload your sources — PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, even YouTube transcripts — and it answers questions only from those, with inline citations back to the exact passage. That grounding is the point: it hallucinates far less than a general chatbot because it's walled in to what you gave it. Its Audio Overviews (two AI hosts discussing your material like a podcast) are the rare gimmick that's genuinely handy. You don't write in Gemini Notebook — you interrogate documents with it.
Reflect is a single-user notes app built around backlinks, like a faster, prettier Obsidian or Roam. You write your own notes, and the AI layer (OpenAI and Anthropic models) helps you search them, transcribe voice memos, fix grammar and pull action items. Its signature is privacy: every note is end-to-end encrypted on your device before it reaches Reflect's servers. It's your personal knowledge base, not a research engine.
The plain split: Gemini Notebook helps you understand documents you've been given; Reflect helps you capture and connect your own thinking.
Pricing in Australia
The gap here is large. Gemini Notebook is free, with real, usable limits and no credit card — and the higher limits come bundled into Google's AI plans, which Google bills in Australian dollars with GST included (AI Plus A$7.99/month, AI Pro A$32.99). Clean and local.
Reflect sells one plan, billed annually in US dollars: US$10/month billed annually (US$120/year), roughly A$168 a year once converted, ex-GST. There's no free tier — just a 14-day trial. So Gemini Notebook is free-to-excellent where Reflect asks for A$168 upfront before you've used it for a month.
Where Gemini Notebook wins
- It's free, and the free tier is genuinely usable — 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, Audio Overviews included.
- Grounded answers with citations. It only talks about your sources and shows you where each claim came from — far less hallucination.
- Native AUD billing with GST on the paid tiers, straight off Google's Australian pricing.
- Audio Overviews. Turn a pile of documents into a podcast-style briefing you can listen to.
Where Reflect wins
- End-to-end encryption. Notes are encrypted on your device before they reach the server — a stronger privacy posture for your own writing.
- It's your notebook. You capture and connect ideas with backlinks; Gemini Notebook can't be your daily note-taker.
- Fast and offline. Polished, quick, works without a connection, syncs across Mac, Windows, web, iOS and Android.
- AI across your own notes. Search, voice transcription, grammar and action-item extraction over what you've written.
Which to pick — decision framework
If your job is making sense of documents — reports, contracts, research papers, study material — pick Gemini Notebook. Nothing here does grounded, cited answering better, and it's free.
If your job is capturing and connecting your own thinking in a private, encrypted notebook, pick Reflect. Gemini Notebook isn't a daily note-taker, and Reflect's encryption suits sensitive personal notes.
If budget matters, Gemini Notebook wins outright — it's free where Reflect is ~A$168/year. If end-to-end encryption of your own writing is the priority, that's Reflect's edge.
The verdict
For most Australians, Gemini Notebook is the pick, and at 22/25 it's our highest-scoring tool in this pairing by a wide margin — a genuine five stars. It's free, it bills in Australian dollars when you do pay, and it's the best tool we've tested for the specific, common job of getting straight, cited answers out of your own documents. The honest limit: it reads your sources but won't let you edit them, and consumer accounts get no Australian data region.
Reflect is the narrower, pricier tool, and at 15/25 it's held back by a single USD-only plan, no free tier, and no Australian residency. But it isn't trying to do Gemini Notebook's job — it's a beautiful, fast, end-to-end encrypted notebook for a solo writer or knowledge worker who values privacy and speed over collaboration. If that's you, the encryption and polish justify the price. For everyone else researching documents, start with Gemini Notebook — it's free, so there's nothing to lose by trying it first.
Update history
- 24 Sep 2026 — A 10% GST uplift described in the text that is not in the figures. The AUD figures here are plain conversions at 1.4045, and the note around them said we grossed them up for GST. Removed under our GST rule: a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service, and this publication stopped adding a notional 10% to its own conversions on 5 September 2026. No figure changed; only the description of them did. No USD price moved and no score changed.
