OpenAI for Australia, explained: a $7bn Sydney data centre, a A$115bn blueprint, and what it means for local business
Posted: 23 June 2026 · Category: AI Assistants & Chatbots
This is a backgrounder, not breaking news — and the timing matters. OpenAI announced "OpenAI for Australia" in Sydney on 5 December 2025, its first dedicated country initiative in the Asia-Pacific. Six months on, it's worth stepping back from the launch-day headlines to ask the only question that matters for a business owner: does any of this actually change how you should use AI in Australia? The short answer is not yet, but watch the data-centre.
What it is
"OpenAI for Australia" bundles three commitments, announced alongside federal ministers Tim Ayres (Industry) and Andrew Charlton (Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy).
- A sovereign data centre. OpenAI partnered with ASX-listed NextDC on a hyperscale AI campus and GPU supercluster at the planned S7 facility in Eastern Creek, western Sydney — around 650 megawatts, a reported $7 billion build, with completion flagged for 2027. OpenAI said it "intends to be an initial offtake with the option to scale." The pitch is sovereign compute for sensitive and mission-critical Australian workloads.
- An economic case. Building on its July 2025 Economic Blueprint for Australia (produced with Mandala Partners), OpenAI projects potential gains of A$115 billion a year by 2030, mostly from productivity.
- A skills program. With the Commonwealth Bank, Coles and Wesfarmers, OpenAI says it will roll out AI training to more than 1.2 million Australian workers and small businesses from 2026, via OpenAI Academy — CommBank alone aiming at a million small-business customers.
What it means for Australian businesses
Be clear-eyed about the timeline. The headline asset — onshore sovereign compute — does not exist yet. The Eastern Creek campus is a 2027 target, and OpenAI is an "initial offtake" partner, not the operator. So if your blocker on ChatGPT is "our data can't leave Australia," this announcement does not solve that today. It signals a direction, not a switch you can flip.
What's real now is softer but not nothing: a clearer signal that Australia is a priority market, a government relationship, and a large publicly-funded skills push that will put ChatGPT in front of a lot more Australian workers. For a small business, the practical takeaway is the training, not the infrastructure — OpenAI Academy is free and worth a look if you're bringing staff up to speed.
It also sharpens a contrast worth noting. Anthropic has moved faster on the specific thing regulated Australian buyers ask for — it already offers Claude inference in the AWS Sydney region on enterprise plans. OpenAI's sovereign compute is a bigger build but a later one. If onshore data residency is a hard requirement for you right now, that gap is the thing to weigh.
Does it change our recommendation?
No — not yet. ChatGPT's place in our reviews rests on the product you can use today, and that hasn't changed. We'll revisit if and when the Eastern Creek compute comes online and OpenAI publishes concrete Australian data-residency options for everyday plans. Until then, treat "OpenAI for Australia" as a credible statement of intent — a 2027 story with a 2026 skills program attached — rather than a reason to change tools.
