Notion's AI Residency and Pricing Both Shifted — What It Means for Australian Teams

Two Notion changes landed within weeks of each other. One touches where your data lives. The other touches what your AI costs. Neither helps Australian teams, and together they sharpen a point we already made in our Notion AI review: on Australian fit, Notion still falls short.

What changed

First, data residency. From May 2026, Notion Enterprise customers can pin their data to two new regions: Tokyo (with an Osaka backup) and Seoul. That brings the in-region list to four: US-West (Oregon), EU (Frankfurt), Japan and South Korea. The feature is free, but Enterprise-only, and you arrange it through an account team.

Australia is not on that list. There is no Sydney region, and no Australian region named on Notion's public roadmap. By default — Notion's own help centre is explicit here — your data continues to reside in the United States.

Second, pricing. Notion's Custom Agents launched on 24 February 2026 with Notion 3.3 and ran free through 3 May. From 4 May, they began metering Notion credits at USD$10 per 1,000 credits, or one US cent per credit, billed monthly with no rollover. A related add-on, Workers, was slated to stay free in beta until 11 August 2026, then start metering on the same credit system at roughly USD$0.0023 per run. (Update, 2 September 2026: Notion has since pushed the Workers metering start to 15 October 2026 — Workers remain free in beta until then. Source)

Credits are pooled across the workspace and consumed by how much an agent reads, how many actions it takes, and how often it runs. There is no published AUD price and no GST line — you are billed in US dollars.

What it means for Australians

The residency gap is the bigger story. A growing number of Australian businesses — especially in finance, legal, health and government-adjacent work — need to know where their data sits, or are contractually required to. Notion now answers that question for customers in Frankfurt, Tokyo and Seoul. It does not answer it for Sydney. An Australian team's data sits in Oregon unless they move to a non-Australian region, which solves nothing for local data-residency requirements.

That matters more now that Notion is pushing autonomous agents that read across your workspace — your documents, your databases, your connected Gmail and Slack. The more an agent touches, the more data residency stops being a tick-box and starts being a real question. Notion's answer for Australia is still "United States."

The pricing change stings in a smaller way. Custom Agents were a free perk; now they are a metered cost in a foreign currency. For a Melbourne business budgeting in dollars and accounting for GST, USD-only credit pricing with no AUD equivalent is one more thing to convert, forecast and reconcile. It is not a deal-breaker. It is friction — the kind that adds up.

Does it change our recommendation

No. If anything, it reinforces it. Our Notion AI review scored Australian Fit at 2 out of 5, and these two moves are exactly why. No Australian data region. No AUD pricing. No GST treatment. The product itself remains capable, and for many teams Notion is still a fine workspace. But on the measures this publication treats as decisive — does it serve Australians well — Notion has not moved.

If data residency is a hard requirement for your business, Notion still cannot meet it locally, and you should weigh that before committing. If it is not, the new agent pricing is a manageable cost you should at least watch, because metered credits have a way of climbing once agents are running around the clock. We will update the review if an Australian region is announced.

Frequently asked questions

What changed?

Two things. From May 2026 Notion Enterprise can pin data to Tokyo and Seoul (joining Oregon and Frankfurt) — but not Sydney. And Custom Agents, free through 3 May, now meter Notion credits at USD$10 per 1,000 from 4 May, billed monthly with no rollover.

Does this affect Australian pricing or users?

Yes, on both fronts. There's no Sydney data region — Australian data sits in Oregon by default. And credit pricing is USD-only with no published AUD price and no GST line. For a Melbourne business budgeting in dollars, that's friction to convert, forecast and reconcile.

Does it change our recommendation?

No — it reinforces it. Our Notion AI review scored Australian Fit 2 out of 5, and these moves are why: no Australian data region, no AUD pricing, no GST treatment. If local data residency is a hard requirement, Notion still cannot meet it.
