⚠ Follow-up — 20 September 2026: ChatGPT Atlas has been discontinued. OpenAI announced the deprecation on 9 July 2026, and Atlas stopped working on 9 August 2026. Agentic browsing moved into the ChatGPT desktop app and a ChatGPT extension for Chrome. The report below was accurate on 25 June 2026 and is kept as a record. For the full account and what Australians should use now, read our ChatGPT Atlas post-mortem.

TL;DR: Atlas is a real, capable AI browser, and its agent mode can genuinely do work for you — but OpenAI itself says prompt-injection attacks may never be fully solved, so treat agent mode as useful-but-supervised, not set-and-forget.

What changed

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas on 21 October 2025 — a standalone web browser with ChatGPT built into the sidebar. It shipped macOS-first, worldwide, to Free, Plus, Pro and Go users. The headline feature is agent mode: you can ask ChatGPT to research a topic, fill out forms, compare options or run a multi-step task across websites while you watch. Agent mode launched in preview for Plus, Pro and Business users, not the free tier.

The platform story is still rolling out. As at late June 2026, Atlas remains a macOS app; OpenAI has said Windows, iOS and Android versions are coming, with most expectations pointing to a Windows beta in the first half of 2026 rather than a confirmed shipped release. So if you are on Windows, the honest answer today is "soon, not now."

In December 2025, OpenAI published a frank security note: agent mode "expands the security threat surface," and prompt injection — where a malicious instruction hidden in a webpage or email hijacks the agent — is "unlikely to ever be fully solved." It shipped hardening updates and added safeguards like a logged-out mode and confirmation prompts before sensitive actions.

Why it matters for Australians

Atlas works in Australia from day one on Mac, and pricing follows your existing ChatGPT plan — so there is no separate AUD price to track, and no GST surprise beyond what you already pay for ChatGPT. The catch is not cost; it is trust.

For an Australian business owner, the prompt-injection warning is the part to take seriously. An agent that can browse, fill forms and click on your behalf can also be tricked by content it reads. OpenAI's own example had an agent follow a malicious instruction buried in an email. Keep agent mode on low-stakes, supervised tasks for now — research, comparisons, drafting — and keep it well away from banking, payments or anything touching client data until you have tested it yourself.

Does this change our recommendation?

Not yet. ChatGPT's standing in our reviews rests on the model you already use; Atlas is a new way to reach it, not a new product. It is worth trying on Mac if you live in your browser. We will weigh agent mode on its own merits once it leaves preview and the security picture settles.

Postscript, 20 September 2026. It never left preview. OpenAI discontinued Atlas on 9 August 2026 and folded agentic browsing into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension. The Windows build this post said was "soon, not now" never shipped.

See our dedicated ChatGPT Atlas post-mortem and where the assistant lands overall in our ChatGPT review. For a browser you can actually install, start with Comet (16/25), Gemini in Chrome (19/25) or Copilot Mode in Edge (19/25).
