Krea AI vs Freepik AI: Which Image Tool for Australians?

By Adam · 28 Jun 2026 · 7 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Freepik AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Compared by Adam · Category: Image Generation · Both reviewed Very Good (⭐⭐⭐⭐)

These two tools both sit in the top tier of our image reviews, and both lose marks for the same Australian reasons. But they are built for opposite people. Krea AI is the playground — a real-time canvas where you sketch or type and watch the image form, made for someone who iterates live. Freepik AI, rebranded as Magnific in April 2026, is the all-in-one — one subscription that bundles generation across a dozen models with a 250-million-asset stock library, made for the small-business owner already paying for stock.

So the question is not "which is better." It is: are you a creative who wants to explore fast, or an operator who wants one bill?

The tension in one line

Krea optimises for the feel of making. Freepik AI optimises for not paying for five things. Krea's real-time generation — a photorealistic image in under 50 milliseconds as you move a shape — turns generation from a slot machine into something closer to drawing. Freepik AI does not try to win on that axis. It wins by putting Flux, Kling, Grok, Nano Banana, Recraft and a stock catalogue behind one login, so a business never juggles a Shutterstock bill and a generation bill again.

Both scored ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good in our reviews. Krea took 18/25; Freepik AI took 17/25. One point between them. The decision is about fit, not quality.

What it costs in Australia

Here the two split sharply, and one fact has changed since our standalone reviews.

Krea bills in US dollars only. There is no native AUD price and no GST-inclusive local invoice. The AUD figures below are our conversions at roughly 1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD; your card's real charge and any foreign-transaction fee will differ, and GST on a direct US software purchase is your responsibility, not something Krea itemises.

Freepik AI now displays prices in AUD to Australian visitors. As of this comparison, magnific.com/pricing shows Australian dollars directly — a genuine improvement on the USD-only listing in our June review. The page still states prices exclude VAT and local taxes, so GST is added on top at checkout. The vendor remains a Spanish company.

Krea pricing from krea.ai/pricing (USD), checked 28 June 2026 — Wayback snapshot 29 June 2026. Freepik AI pricing from magnific.com/pricing (AUD-displayed), checked 28 June 2026 — Wayback snapshot 29 June 2026. AUD conversions for Krea are ours (≈1.40), not Krea's prices. Both pages list prices exclusive of local taxes.

A note on Freepik AI's numbers: our June review listed these tiers in USD (Premium US$14.50/mo annual, Premium+ US$33.75/mo annual). The pricing page now shows AUD figures to Australian visitors, and the tier line-up reads Essential, Premium, Premium+ and Pro. Treat the AUD figures above as the live, primary numbers; both pages still exclude GST, so add roughly 10% at the till.

Value read. At the entry door they are close — Krea Basic lands near AUD$14/mo, Freepik Essential at A$13/mo. But they buy different things. Krea Basic buys a commercial licence and the full real-time creative kit. Freepik Essential buys a foot in the door of a much larger platform, where the value only switches on at Premium+ (A$45/mo annual) once unlimited generation across 30+ models and the stock library come into play. If you already pay for stock, Freepik's bundle quietly absorbs a separate Shutterstock-style subscription. Krea makes no attempt to.

Feature diff

Capability Krea AI Freepik AI (Magnific)
Real-time canvas Yes — under-50ms generation as you sketch; best-in-class No
Model breadth 64+ (Flux, Veo, Runway, Luma, Ideogram, Gemini, own model) 30+ unlimited (Flux, Nano Banana, Kling, Grok, Recraft, Krea, GPT Image)
Video Yes — all models on Pro+ Yes — Kling, Runway, Veo, Seedance, Pixverse
Audio No Yes — Lyria, ElevenLabs music + SFX
3D Yes — text-to-3D Yes — generator, scenes, 360
Upscaling To 22K (Max) Magnific upscaler included; Topaz on Premium+
Stock library No 250M+ licensed assets included
Design workspace Nodes automation (Pro+) Designer (Canva-adjacent) + Spaces canvas
No-train pledge Yes — never trains on your content Licensed-training claim; not independently audited

The shape is clear. Krea goes deep on the act of generating — the real-time canvas is a category of one, and feature depth scored a full 5/5 in our review. Freepik AI goes wide on the workflow — also 5/5 for depth, but earned through breadth: audio, stock, a design tool and an included upscaler that each replace a separate subscription. Krea has no audio and no stock library. Freepik AI has no real-time canvas.

One provenance point matters for business use. Krea states plainly that it never trains on your content and grants full commercial rights. Freepik AI says it trains on licensed content, but that varies by aggregated model and has not been independently audited. For a business putting generated images into advertising, Krea's flat no-train pledge is the cleaner position — though Australian Consumer Law on misleading conduct applies to either tool's output regardless.

Australian fit

This is where both tools are honestly limited, and where they tie. Each scored Australian Fit 2/5 in our reviews.

Krea AI Freepik AI (Magnific)
Pricing in AUD No — USD only Yes — AUD displayed
GST Not handled Added at checkout
Data residency None disclosed (US vendor) None — European infrastructure (Spain)
Local support Help centre/community; SLA Enterprise-only Email/web form; no AEST hours
Certifications SOC 2 (on request); no IRAP GDPR; no IRAP

Freepik AI takes one real point here: it shows AUD prices, which removes the foreign-transaction-fee guesswork and the mental conversion. Krea still asks you to wear USD billing and do your own GST sums. But neither offers Australian data residency, neither holds an IRAP assessment, and neither runs local support hours. For a sole trader or a small marketing team, none of that is a dealbreaker. For a government buyer or a regulated organisation with onshore data obligations, both fall at the same hurdle.

Because both sit at Australian Fit 2/5, neither qualifies as our category Top Pick under our Australian Fit gate — a category winner needs at least 4/5 on local fit. The recommendation below is therefore a buyer-fit verdict, not a crown.

Who buys which

Buy Krea AI if you are the creative who iterates live. If your day is visual exploration — mood-boarding, nailing a composition, steering an image instead of rolling the dice on a prompt — Krea's real-time canvas is the most direct tool we have used. A designer, illustrator or marketer who lives in visual tools and can wear USD billing gets strong value from Basic at US$9/mo (≈ AUD$13). You are paying for the feel of making, and Krea wins that outright.

Buy Freepik AI if you are the small-business owner who wants one subscription. If you already pay for stock, or you need a landscape from Flux, a video from Kling and a music track in the same afternoon, the bundle is the point. Premium+ at A$45/mo (annual) folds generation, an upscaler and a 250-million-asset library into one AUD invoice. For an operator counting subscriptions, that consolidation — plus AUD pricing — is worth more than a real-time canvas they will rarely open.

The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer this comparison is written for — a busy small-business owner, not a full-time creative — Freepik AI (Magnific) is the better fit. It is the all-in-one for someone already paying for stock: AUD pricing on the page, generation across 30+ models, an included upscaler, and a stock catalogue that absorbs a separate subscription. It scored 17/25, one point behind Krea, but the gap reverses for this reader because the bundle and the AUD invoice solve the operator's actual problem — too many bills, too much account admin.

Krea AI remains the better tool for the creative who iterates live, and the higher raw score (18/25) reflects that. If your work is visual exploration and the real-time canvas earns its keep daily, Krea is the one to reach for, USD billing and all.

Neither earns five stars or a category Top Pick for Australians — both lack AUD-native data residency, IRAP and local support. But within their lanes, both are genuinely Very Good. Pick the lane you actually live in.

USD/AUD ≈ 1.40 as of June 2026. Krea AUD figures are our conversions, not vendor prices; both vendors list prices exclusive of local taxes, so a GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST; other buyers add ~10%.
