Decktopus vs Presentations.ai (2026): Which Budget AI Deck Maker for Australians?

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Decktopus. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Two budget AI deck builders, level on our scores — Decktopus 15/25, Presentations.ai 15/25. Neither reaches the Gamma tier. Decktopus is faster and more structured, with usable speaker notes. Presentations.ai starts free without a card and exports cleaner PowerPoint. Both bill in US dollars and neither stores your data in Australia. For the typical AU small business, Decktopus wins on workflow — but only just.

Compared 30 June 2026 by Adam. Neither tool was re-scored for this piece; scores are drawn from our standing reviews.

Two tools. Same category. Same score. That is unusual, and it makes for a genuinely close call.

We scored Decktopus at 15/25 and Presentations.ai at 15/25 — both ⭐⭐⭐ Good, both sitting a rung below the standalone leaders in this category. Neither is the class of Gamma. Both are honest, affordable ways to turn a prompt into a deck.

So this is not a quality contest. There is no clear winner on output. The real question for an Australian small business is workflow feel and price: which one suits how you actually build slides. That is what this comparison settles.

The one-line difference

Decktopus is a form-driven builder. You answer a few structured questions, it hands you a sensibly-ordered deck with real speaker notes, and it keeps you on rails to finish fast.

Presentations.ai leans on template intelligence and brand consistency. It is the more free-to-start option, with a stronger PowerPoint export for teams that ultimately present from Microsoft 365.

Same destination. Different feel getting there.

What they cost in Australia

Both vendors bill in US dollars. Neither offers native AUD invoicing. The AUD figures below convert at roughly A$1.40 per US$1 (June 2026) and are indicative, not quotes.

Plan level Decktopus (USD) Decktopus (approx AUD) Presentations.ai (USD) Presentations.ai (approx AUD)
Free tier 15 sign-up credits only A$0 US$0 A$0
Entry paid Pro — US$9.99/mo billed yearly (US$119.88/yr); US$24.99 month to month ~A$14/mo (~A$168/yr); ~A$35 month to month Pro — US$20/mo billed annually (US$240/yr) ~A$28/mo (~A$336/yr)
Team/upper Business — US$19.99/user/mo billed yearly (US$239.88/yr); US$44.99 month to month ~A$28/user/mo (~A$336/yr); ~A$63 month to month Gold — US$100/mo billed annually (US$1,200/yr) ~A$140/mo

Prices verified live against both vendor pricing pages on 1 July 2026 (see Sources). Decktopus AI credits (re-read 30 September 2026): Pro 750 a month, Business 1,000 a seat a month. Presentations.ai credits: Starter 100/yr, Pro 5,000/yr, Gold 50,000/yr.

Two things stand out.

Decktopus is cheaper at the entry paid tier on yearly billing. Pro at ~A$14/month billed yearly undercuts Presentations.ai Pro at ~A$28/month. Decktopus also offers a month-to-month option (~A$35); Presentations.ai Pro is billed annually.

Presentations.ai has the more capable free tier — with a catch. Its Starter plan gives you real PowerPoint and PDF export with no credit card. But 100 credits a year is a trial allowance, not a working tool. Decktopus no longer has a free tier at all, just 15 sign-up credits (about three slides).

GST: Both are overseas digital suppliers billing in USD. Any 10% GST is added at checkout, not issued as a native AUD tax invoice. Presentations.ai also notes it may adjust headline prices by country for purchasing-power parity, so your AU checkout figure could differ. Check the line items before you buy.

Feature diff

Decktopus Presentations.ai
Core flow Form-driven — structured questions, deck out Prompt-driven — "ChatGPT for presentations"
Speed to first draft Under a minute (our testing) A couple of minutes (our testing)
Speaker notes Yes — specific enough to present from Not a highlighted strength
PowerPoint export Available on paid tiers A stated strength; clean .pptx in testing
Free-tier export No PDF export; branding on every slide PowerPoint and PDF export included
Brand customisation Colours, fonts, logo (Business tier) Colours, fonts on paid tiers
Design control Template-bound; fine control is fiddly Template-led; narrower range than Canva
Free without a card Yes (but heavily branded) Yes (no card needed)

The pattern is clear. Decktopus wins on speed and structure — the form flow and genuine speaker notes get a busy operator to a presentable draft faster. Presentations.ai wins on export and free access — cleaner PowerPoint and a card-free start suit teams living in Microsoft 365.

Neither offers the fine, pixel-level design control of a full design suite. Both are template engines with AI on top. If you need bespoke layouts, look at Canva instead.

Australian fit — the deciding lens

This is where our publication weights hardest, and where these two tools are near-identical. Both scored 2/5 on Australian Fit. Neither can be a category Top Pick under our Methodology: a Top Pick requires Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Data residency — the shared weakness.

  • Decktopus is registered in Palo Alto, California. Its privacy policy states data "may be transferred to, stored, and processed in any country or territory" where its providers operate. There is no Australian region and no commitment on where your content lands.
  • Presentations.ai is Singapore-based. Its privacy policy says data "may be transferred to the United States or other locations," with no Australian data-residency option.

Neither keeps your deck data in Australia. For internal, low-sensitivity decks, that is fine. For client-facing or commercial-in-confidence material — accountants, lawyers, anyone handling personal information — it is a genuine flag for both. Weigh it before you upload sensitive content to either.

Billing and GST. Both bill in USD with GST added at checkout rather than a native AUD invoice. Expect foreign-transaction fees and exchange-rate movement on top of the listed price. Neither issues a clean local tax invoice out of the box.

Support. Neither has an Australian support presence. Decktopus support is online and community-based, on US-Pacific or Turkey-aligned hours. Presentations.ai does not clearly publish its support channels or hours; help appears to be email and help-centre based.

AU-aware output. Neither produces Australian spelling, currency, or context by default. Prompt explicitly for "Australian English and AUD figures" with both.

On Australian fit, there is no meaningful gap. This is a tie, and not a flattering one.

Who should buy which

The scores are level, the Australian fit is level, and neither is a category winner. So the decision comes down to how you work.

Buy Decktopus if:

  • You build a steady stream of internal decks — pitches, training, updates — and value speed above all.
  • You present from your slides and want AI speaker notes that are actually usable.
  • You want the lower entry price (~A$14/month billed yearly) and a month-to-month option.
  • You are fine paying to remove branding, because the free tier is a demo, not a tool.

Buy Presentations.ai if:

  • You want to start free with no credit card and real PowerPoint export to trial properly.
  • Your team ultimately finishes and presents in Microsoft 365, so clean .pptx export matters most.
  • You are shopping purely on access and are willing to accept tight free credits.

The verdict

For the typical Australian small business — a busy operator building internal and first-draft decks, watching the monthly spend — Decktopus is the pick.

It gets you from blank screen to presentable deck faster, its speaker notes save real time, and its entry plan is cheaper with a genuine monthly option. That is a workflow win for people who make a lot of decks and want to finish them.

But this is a narrow call, not a rout. Presentations.ai is the better choice if a card-free trial or clean PowerPoint export outranks raw speed for you. And both share the same ceiling: no Australian data residency, USD billing, no local support.

So the honest bottom line holds. If your decks are internal and low-stakes, pick on workflow — Decktopus for most. If they carry client or sensitive data, neither of these is where that material should live. For a buyer who wants Australian billing and a clearer data story, Canva Magic Studio is the better home; for more polish, start with Gamma.

Update history
  • 30 Sep 2026 — Decktopus's prices synced to its pricing page. Read in a browser on an Australian connection: Pro is now US$9.99 a month billed yearly or US$24.99 month to month, Business US$19.99 a seat yearly or US$44.99 monthly, credits are monthly (750 / 1,000 a seat), and the free plan is gone (15 sign-up credits). Decktopus is still the cheaper entry on yearly billing; the verdict stands. Presentations.ai's side was not re-read.
