Auphonic vs Adobe Podcast for Australian Podcasters in 2026: Which Cleanup Tool Wins?

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 7 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Auphonic. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Winner: Auphonic for the regular Australian podcaster running a series. It levels speakers, normalises to broadcast loudness and bundles transcription in one batch pass. Pick Adobe Podcast instead if you just need to rescue one rough recording — its free Enhance Speech is the better single-file cleaner.

Last reviewed: 30 June 2026 by Adam.

Both tools promise the same magic: drop in rough audio, get back something that sounds professional. Neither makes you learn audio engineering. That is where the similarity ends.

Auphonic is a German loudness-and-levelling workhorse built for people who publish on a schedule. Adobe Podcast is a free, browser-based speech cleaner built for anyone with one bad file. We reviewed both in June 2026 — Auphonic scored 16/25, Adobe Podcast 17/25. That one-point gap hides a real fork in the road. The right pick depends entirely on how often you publish and what your audio actually needs.

What both tools actually do

Both are the step after you record. Neither is a recording booth or a full editor. You bring a finished-but-rough file; they make it sound clean.

Auphonic runs a chain of fixes in one pass. It levels a quiet guest against a loud host, strips hum and room echo, and normalises loudness to broadcast standards like EBU R128. It then transcribes the result using a self-hosted Whisper model and generates shownotes and chapters. You download a publish-ready file. It also handles multitrack jobs, watch folders and an API for people processing volume.

Adobe Podcast is narrower and sharper. Its headline tool, Enhance Speech, is a single AI filter that pulls background noise, echo and hum out of a recording and leaves clean speech. Adobe shipped version two in November 2024, and on a genuinely noisy file it is the stronger cleaner. There is no levelling chain, no loudness target, no transcription bundle. It does one job, and it does it very well.

So the split is clear. Auphonic is a finishing line for a whole episode. Adobe Podcast is a rescue tool for one track.

Pricing in Australia

Neither tool bills in Australian dollars. Both will hit your card in foreign currency, with a likely conversion fee on top.

Auphonic prices by the hour of audio you process, not a flat seat. You buy recurring monthly credits (cheaper per hour, but unused hours expire) or one-time credits that never expire. Awkwardly, Auphonic does not show prices on its own pricing page until you select a currency or log in. The figures here are reconstructed from third-party trackers and should be confirmed in your own account. Its free tier gives you 2 hours a month — enough to fully process a couple of short episodes — with a short Auphonic jingle on the output as the only catch. Checkout runs through FastSpring, a merchant of record that calculates and itemises Australian GST at the till. Keep that receipt for your BAS.

Adobe Podcast is simpler to quote, and as of 21 September 2026 it is the one of the two with a real Australian price. The free tier handles audio files up to 30 minutes and 500 MB, with one hour of processing a day. The standalone Premium plan has been retired: the paid features now come inside the Adobe Firefly Pro plan, which Adobe's storefront sells to Australians at A$32.98/month, labelled “incl. GST”. That is a genuine local price with a clean GST line — but it is more than double the old Premium, and you cannot buy the audio tools on their own. A 30-day trial is offered.

For a regular publisher, the real cost question is volume. A weekly 25-minute episode lives comfortably inside either free tier. Push past that — long panels, daily processing, batch runs — and Auphonic's metered hours scale more predictably than Adobe's daily-cap-then-jump-to-Premium model.

Where Auphonic wins

  • Batch and consistency. Multitrack processing, watch folders and an API mean you can run a back catalogue or a whole season to the same loudness spec without re-tuning each file.
  • Broadcast loudness, properly. It normalises to EBU R128 and platform presets, so every episode hits the same perceived volume in a listener's feed. Adobe Podcast has no loudness target at all.
  • Transcription included free. Whisper-based, ~100 languages including Australian English, with auto shownotes and timestamped chapters. A standalone transcription tool would charge per minute for this.
  • Stronger privacy posture. Files sit on German and EU servers under GDPR, auto-deleted after 21 days (7 for video). For most Australians that is a privacy positive, not a negative.
  • Pricing that suits irregular publishers. One-time credits never expire, so a fortnightly or seasonal show is not paying for idle months.

Where Adobe Podcast wins

  • Better raw cleanup. On a genuinely noisy, echoey recording, Enhance Speech v2 is the stronger denoiser. If your single problem is "this one file sounds terrible," this is the better fix.
  • Free, with real teeth. The free tier alone rescues most rough recordings. Every Australian who records anything should have it bookmarked.
  • Faster on a single file. A 20-minute interview clears in about two minutes. Upload, wait, download — that is the entire workflow.
  • Zero learning curve. No production to configure, no algorithms to tick. It is the more forgiving tool for a complete beginner.
  • Native Australian billing. A$32.98/month incl. GST, from Adobe's own storefront — no exchange-rate drift, no foreign-transaction fee, and a GST line you can actually claim. It no longer undercuts Auphonic on price, but it is the only one of the two that quotes you in your own currency.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You publish a regular series and want every episode at the same loudness: Auphonic. The batch chain and EBU R128 normalisation are the whole point.
  • You need transcripts, shownotes or chapters as well as clean audio: Auphonic. Adobe Podcast does not transcribe at all.
  • You have one bad recording to rescue and nothing else: Adobe Podcast. Its free denoiser is the stronger single-file cleaner.
  • You are a total beginner who records occasionally: Adobe Podcast. Less to configure, free, and forgiving.
  • You process a back catalogue or multitrack interviews: Auphonic. Multitrack and watch folders exist for exactly this.
  • You handle sensitive Australian client or health audio: lean Auphonic for its EU-GDPR hosting and 21-day deletion — but note neither tool offers AU data residency, and neither replaces qualified advice on your Privacy Act / APP 8 obligations.

The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer in this category — someone running a podcast on a schedule, not just patching one file — Auphonic is the pick. The reason is structural, not cosmetic. A series needs consistency: the same loudness, the same levelling, the same finish on every episode, ideally in batch. Auphonic was built around that job, and it throws in transcription and chapters that would cost extra elsewhere. That is why the serious series publisher buys Auphonic despite its lower 16/25 score.

Adobe Podcast scores a point higher at 17/25, and it earns it. As a single-file cleaner it is the better tool, and the free tier is the best in the category. But it has no loudness spec, no batch mode and no transcription. It is a brilliant utility, not a production line. The occasional fixer — someone with one rough recording and no recurring workflow — should reach for it first, and pay nothing.

Both are held to four stars by weak Australian fit: USD or EUR billing, no local support, offshore hosting. Auphonic edges ahead on AU fit (3/5 versus 2/5) thanks to its GDPR posture and GST-itemised checkout. Unless your need is a one-off rescue, pick Auphonic — it finishes whole episodes, not just single files.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 — Adobe Podcast corrected: it bills Australians in Australian dollars, and the standalone Premium plan is gone. Re-read in a browser from an Australian connection. The paid features now sit inside the Adobe Firefly Pro plan, which Adobe's own storefront prices at A$32.98/month, “incl. GST” — a real local price, not a conversion — against the US$9.99/mo (≈A$14) carried here. The figures and the “USD only” framing are updated. In the source review, Australian Fit went 2/5 → 3/5 and Value for Money 4/5 → 3/5; the total stays 17/25, so nothing here changes rank.
