Claude Code vs Cowork for Australians in 2026: Which One Is for You?
No single winner. The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.
Pricing figures updated 20 September 2026. Anthropic now quotes Australian visitors in Australian dollars, and its pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so Claude figures below are the vendor’s own rather than our conversions. Prices for other vendors that bill in USD are still converted at the current rate and shown ex-GST (Methodology).
The short answer: If you write code, use Claude Code. If you don't, use Cowork. They run on the same underlying agent, but Anthropic has spent 2026 pulling them apart for two different audiences — and the May plugin update made the line clearer than ever.

What both tools actually do
Both are agents, not chatbots. You give them a goal, and they take a series of steps to reach it — reading files, running tasks, calling other tools — instead of just answering in one message. Both are made by Anthropic, both run on Claude models, and both sit inside the same Pro and Max subscriptions.
The difference is what they point at. Claude Code points at a codebase. It lives in your terminal or code editor and is built to write, test and ship software. Cowork points at your everyday work — documents, spreadsheets, email, project tools — and runs inside the Claude desktop app on Mac and Windows.
Think of it this way: same engine, two different vehicles. One is a ute built for the job site. The other is the family car built for everything else.
Pricing in Australia
There is no separate price for either tool. Both are included in a Claude Pro or Max plan, and since September 2026 Anthropic prices those plans for Australians in Australian dollars. Pro is A$28/mo on annual billing (A$340 up front) or A$34/mo monthly. Max starts at A$170.01/mo. Anthropic is also retiring the Cowork name — its pricing page reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude".
Two AU notes that don't change between the products:
- GST. Anthropic’s pricing page states "Prices include 10% GST", so the AUD figures above are what you pay. Check the tax invoice for the GST line before your accountant does.
- Data residency. Claude processes data offshore. For a Tasmanian accountant or a Sydney law firm handling regulated client data, that matters regardless of which tool you choose — treat it the same way you'd treat any offshore SaaS.
Where Claude Code wins
- It writes and ships real software. This is its entire reason to exist. If your work output is code, nothing in Cowork competes.
- Serious automation depth. 2026 brought dynamic workflows — Claude can spin up and coordinate hundreds of sub-agents for a large task — plus sub-agents that spawn their own sub-agents. That's overkill for office work and genuinely useful for big engineering jobs.
- It lives where developers live. Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, the web. No context-switching out of the editor.
- Power-user controls. Fine-grained permissions, custom skills, a large community plugin marketplace (thousands of plugins), and
/rewindto recover a cleared session.
Where Cowork wins
- You don't need to be technical. This is the whole point. The May 2026 plugin update added 11 ready-made plugins for job functions — Sales, Marketing, Finance, Legal, Customer Support and Data among them — so you install a template instead of building a workflow. (Brand-voice enforcement, for instance, ships inside the Marketing plugin.)
- It connects to the apps you already use. Slack, Notion, Asana, Jira, Monday, and a unified Microsoft 365 connector for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and SharePoint.
- It works across your files, not your codebase. Drafting, summarising, reformatting, multi-step document jobs — the work most Australian businesses actually do.
- Windows and Mac parity. Cowork runs on both through the desktop app, so it isn't a Mac-only club.
Which to pick — decision framework
- If your job output is software → Claude Code. No contest. Cowork can't ship a pull request.
- If your job output is documents, plans, analysis or admin → Cowork. You'll get value on day one without touching a command line.
- If you run a small business and "tech" means a laptop and Microsoft 365 → Cowork. The plugin model is built for exactly you, and the M365 connector meets you where your files already live.
- If you're a technical founder who does both → run both. They share one subscription, so there's no extra cost to keeping Claude Code for the codebase and Cowork for the business admin.
The verdict
For the vast majority of our readers — operators, professionals, small business owners — Cowork is the one to start with. It's the tool Anthropic built for people whose job isn't writing code, and the 2026 plugin push made that intent explicit. You don't learn it so much as point it at a task.
Claude Code is the specialist's tool. If you write software, it's outstanding, and the automation it gained this year is well beyond anything Cowork offers. But for a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner, opening a terminal to get value is the wrong starting line.
Unless you ship code for a living, pick Cowork. The fact that both come in the same subscription means trying the other later costs you nothing but the download.
Update history
- 20 Sep 2026 — Claude plans now priced in Australian dollars. Anthropic's pricing page, as rendered to an Australian visitor on 19 September 2026, quotes Pro at A$28/mo on annual billing (A$340 up front) or A$34 monthly and Max from A$170.01/mo, and states "Prices include 10% GST". Was: Pro shown as "US$20/mo … ~A$28/mo ex-GST", a conversion at ~1.40, with the GST line reading "Anthropic prices in USD and may not itemise Australian GST … Budget 10% on top." Now: the vendor's own AUD figures, GST included. Neither Cowork nor Claude Code has a separate price either way.
- 6 Sep 2026 — AUD conversions rebased from the retired 1.55 + 10% GST basis to the current USD→AUD rate (~1.40, verified 5 September 2026), shown ex-GST (our AUD pricing rule / our GST rule). Figures only; no vendor change.
