ChatGPT brings ads to Australia — what changes on the free tier (2026)
What changed
OpenAI is introducing ads in ChatGPT, and Australia is in the first wave — alongside New Zealand, Canada and the United States. It makes ChatGPT the first major AI assistant to put advertising inside its free tier for Australian users.
The detail that matters most is where the ads appear, and where they don't. Ads show only to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers. The Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans stay ad-free. OpenAI says conversations remain private, and that paying users can upgrade to keep the experience clean.
Australia wasn't chosen at random. OpenAI says Australian ChatGPT usage more than doubled over the past year, and it has stood up a local Australian team to support the rollout. We're no longer an afterthought market — which cuts both ways.
What it means for Australians
If you use ChatGPT on a Free or Go plan, expect sponsored placements to start appearing in the coming weeks. The upside: the free tier stays free, and OpenAI's stated position is that your conversations aren't the ad product and remain private. The downside is the obvious one — a tool millions of Australians treat as a neutral assistant now has a commercial layer, and "which answer is genuinely best" and "which placement was paid for" deserve a more careful eye.
The escape hatch is a paid plan. ChatGPT Plus removes ads entirely, and any of the business tiers are ad-free by default — worth weighing if you use ChatGPT for client-facing or commercial work where sponsored content sitting beside your output isn't a good look.
Does it change our recommendation
Not our scores — but it sharpens a choice. If an ad-free experience matters to you and you'd rather not pay, the Google Gemini and Claude free tiers remain ad-free for now, and Gemini in particular offers strong value to Australians. If you're committed to ChatGPT, treat this as one more reason to weigh a paid tier. Our five questions before paying for AI guide walks through that call.
We score every tool against the same five criteria, including Australian Fit — see our Methodology.
