Verdict (TL;DR): Writesonic is not the cheap AI writing tool it was two years ago. In 2026 it has rebuilt itself as an "AI Search Growth Engine" — a platform for tracking how your brand shows up inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, then publishing long SEO articles to improve that. The AI Article Writer underneath is genuinely capable: it runs a multi-step research-and-draft pipeline and produces a cited 3,000-word article in one go. But the pricing has moved a long way upmarket — the entry plan is USD$79/month (about A$111), billed in US dollars with no Australian tax invoice, and the visibility features most marketers come for sit higher up the ladder. For an Australian business, the catches are real: no AUD billing, no GST invoice from the vendor, no Australian data hosting, and outputs that are not AU-aware unless you steer them. If you want a simple, affordable AI writer, this is no longer it. If you specifically want AI-search visibility tracking and are comfortable paying in USD, it's worth a trial.

What Writesonic is

Writesonic launched as a budget AI copywriting tool — short blog posts, ad copy, product descriptions, a chatbot called Chatsonic. That product still exists, but it is no longer the headline. In 2026 the company describes itself as "The AI Search Growth Engine", and the home page is built around four jobs: Track (monitor how your brand appears across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and others), Prioritise (an "Action Center" that ranks what to fix), Act (publish optimised content and technical fixes), and Prove (measure the change 14 and 28 days later). The industry buzzword for this is GEO — generative engine optimisation, the AI-search cousin of SEO.

The engine doing the writing is the AI Article Writer. Writesonic is firm that it "is not a wrapper around ChatGPT": it runs an agentic pipeline — one stage researches live data, another builds an outline around SEO entities, another drafts, and later stages review the draft against frameworks and strip out obvious AI tells. It produces long-form articles (Writesonic quotes 3,000 to 8,000 words) with citations, FAQs, schema markup, internal and external links, and hero images. The company is based in San Francisco, founded by Samanyou Garg.

One thing to be clear-eyed about: this is a tool that has changed shape. A lot of the older "Writesonic is cheap and easy" advice you'll find online describes a product that no longer matches the current pricing page. Read the date on anything you find.

What it costs in Australia

Here's the part Australian buyers need to sit with. Writesonic bills in US dollars only. There is no native AUD pricing and no Australian tax invoice from the vendor — you pay on a USD card, and any GST handling is your own problem at BAS time, not something Writesonic itemises for you.

The pricing has also moved sharply upmarket as the product became a platform. As of 3 June 2026, the vendor's own pricing page shows:

Plan Price (USD, billed annually) Approx AUD (≈1.40) What you get
Starter USD$79/mo ≈ A$111/mo 15 AI articles/month, 1 user, 1 project, AI-search tracking limited to ChatGPT only
Basic USD$199/mo ≈ A$279/mo 25 articles/month, 2 users, tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews
Growth (most popular) USD$399/mo ≈ A$559/mo 50 articles/month, 3 users, 2 projects, sentiment analysis, broader tracking
Enterprise Custom — All 10 AI platforms tracked, full Action Center, SSO/SAML, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR, dedicated strategist

Pricing as of 3 June 2026, from writesonic.com/pricing (annual-billing rates; month-to-month is higher — the Starter plan is USD$99/month billed monthly). AUD figures are our own conversion at ≈1.40 and are indicative only — you are billed in USD. A 7-day free trial with no credit card is offered. Some recent secondary write-ups still list cheaper legacy "Lite" and "Standard" tiers at around USD$39–49/month — but neither the live pricing page nor Writesonic's own subscription docs show those tiers any more. We checked both vendor sources directly: the current line-up is Starter, Basic, Growth and Enterprise only. Treat the live page as the source of truth.

A note on the free plan: older guidance describes a free tier with 25 credits (around 10,000 words). The current pricing page leads with a 7-day trial rather than a permanent free plan, and Writesonic's own subscription docs list no free tier. We could not confirm a standing free plan on either vendor source — assume the 7-day trial is your way in.

Value verdict: Two years ago Writesonic was one of the cheapest ways into AI writing. It isn't any more. At a USD$79 floor (≈A$111) that only tracks one AI engine, and a real GEO capability that starts at USD$199 (≈A$279), this is now priced as a marketing-team platform, not a solo writer's tool. If all you want is to draft blog posts, you can do that with a general assistant for a fraction of this. The money only makes sense if you genuinely want the AI-search visibility tracking.

How it works in practice

The AI Article Writer is the strongest part. You give it a topic; it researches live sources, builds an outline, drafts, and hands back a long article with citations and a content structure already in place. For a busy marketer who needs a publish-ready first draft of a 3,000-word SEO piece — comparison post, category guide, listicle — it does in one pass what would otherwise take you a morning of prompting and stitching. The citations and schema markup are a genuine time-saver if SEO is the point.

The GEO dashboard is the differentiator. It watches how often your brand is mentioned in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, tracks your "share of voice", and reads the sentiment of how those models describe you. For a brand worried about being invisible inside AI answers — a real and growing concern — that visibility is useful. But it's gated to the USD$199+ (≈A$279+) plans, so the cheap Starter plan gives you the writer without the headline feature.

The weak spots are honesty spots. The output is good but generic out of the box — it will write "store" not "shop", default to US spelling and US examples, and won't know an Australian audience unless you tell it to. The long articles still need a human edit before they're publishable; the "humanizer" step reduces AI tells but doesn't remove the need for a sub-editor. And credits don't roll over month to month, so unused capacity is lost.

What it does well

  • A real research-and-draft pipeline, not a single prompt. The AI Article Writer runs multiple stages and returns a cited, structured long-form draft in one go — a genuine time-saver for SEO content.
  • AI-search visibility tracking that few writing tools offer. The GEO dashboard monitoring ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews is a real, differentiated feature for brands worried about AI-answer visibility.
  • Schema, citations and SEO scaffolding built in. Articles come with FAQs, internal/external links and schema markup, which saves manual SEO work.
  • Enterprise-grade compliance exists — at the top. SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR are advertised, but only on the Enterprise tier.
  • A no-card 7-day trial. You can test the writer before paying anything.

What to watch out for

  • USD-only billing, no GST invoice. You pay in US dollars on a US-vendor invoice. There's no AUD price and no GST-itemised tax invoice — your bookkeeper handles the GST treatment, not Writesonic.
  • The price has moved upmarket. A USD$79 (≈A$111) floor that tracks one AI engine, and a USD$199 (≈A$279) real entry point, put this well above a solo writer's budget.
  • No Australian data residency. Data is transferred to and processed in the United States. There's no AU hosting region.
  • Free-tier inputs may train its models. Writesonic's privacy terms state that for free-tier users it retains inputs, prompts and outputs to improve and train its models. Paid-tier treatment differs — check before uploading anything sensitive.
  • Outputs aren't AU-aware by default. Expect US spelling and US examples unless you explicitly steer it to Australian English and context.
  • Compliance certs are Enterprise-only. SOC 2 Type II and friends sit behind custom pricing — the self-serve plans don't carry the same advertised assurances.

Australian fit

  • Available in Australia: Yes — it's a web platform, accessible anywhere.
  • Pricing in AUD: No. USD only. Our AUD figures (≈A$111 / A$308 / A$618) are indicative conversions at ≈1.40; you are billed in US dollars.
  • GST: Not handled for you. No GST-itemised Australian tax invoice from the vendor; treat it as an imported service at BAS time.
  • Data residency: None for Australia. Data is processed in the United States.
  • Local support: None AU-specific. Support runs through the help centre, docs and a demo-booking path; the listed company address is San Francisco. We found no AU office, AU business hours, or AU-specific support channel on the vendor's site.
  • Training on your data: Yes for free-tier inputs, per Writesonic's privacy terms; paid-tier treatment differs and should be confirmed.
  • AU-aware outputs: No by default — US spelling and examples unless prompted otherwise.

Alternatives

Tool Why you might prefer it
Jasper If you want a mature, brand-voice-led AI writing platform aimed at marketing teams and don't need the AI-search tracking.
A general assistant (ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini) If you just want to draft blog posts and copy, a general assistant does it well for a fraction of Writesonic's new floor price.
Surfer SEO / Clearscope If your need is SEO content optimisation specifically, rather than AI-answer visibility plus writing in one platform.

Bottom line

Writesonic in 2026 is a competent tool wearing a new, more expensive suit. The AI Article Writer genuinely earns its keep for anyone who pumps out long SEO content, and the GEO visibility dashboard is a real, forward-looking feature that most writing tools don't have. But it has left its old "cheap and cheerful" position behind. For an Australian business, the friction is concrete: you pay in USD with no GST invoice, your data sits in the US, and nothing about the output is Australian unless you make it so.

It scores 13 for honest reasons. The product is capable, but the Australian fit is weak — USD-only billing, no GST handling, no local data hosting, and outputs that need steering to sound Australian. The price has climbed to platform level while the headline visibility feature stays locked behind the USD$199 (≈A$279) tier. If you specifically want AI-search visibility tracking and can wear USD billing, trial it. If you just want an affordable AI writer, look elsewhere — this isn't that tool any more. We'll refresh this if the pricing structure or the legacy plans firm up.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 2/5 The cheap-writer days are over. USD$79 floor tracks one AI engine; real GEO starts at USD$199. Capable, but no longer cheap
Ease of Use 3/5 The Article Writer is genuinely one-pass and easy; the broader platform (tracking, Action Center, projects) is a lot to learn
Feature Depth 4/5 Multi-stage writing pipeline plus AI-search visibility tracking across 10 platforms is a deep, differentiated stack
Australian Fit 2/5 USD-only, no GST invoice, US data processing, free-tier training, US-default outputs. Weak for Australian buyers
Reliability & Support 2/5 SOC 2 Type II / HIPAA / GDPR exist only at Enterprise; self-serve support is docs and demo-booking, no AU presence
Total 13/25 ⭐⭐⭐ Good

  • 9 Oct 2026 — re-verified by browser from Australia; negative confirmed, ladder unchanged. writesonic.com/pricing on an Australian connection: Starter $79, Basic $199, Growth $399 a month billed annually, Enterprise custom — every figure in the table above holds, and the quotas (15 / 25 / 50 articles a month; 1 / 2 / 3 users) match. The markup carries no USD, A$ or AUD string at all: a bare $ from a San Francisco company. aud_native: false stands. Nothing material changed, so this is a housekeeping note under our editions policy, not a new edition. Note: Writesonic's pricing structure is in flux as it transitions from a writing tool to an AI-search platform. Legacy "Lite"/"Standard" tiers cited by secondary sources were checked against both the live pricing page and Writesonic's own subscription docs on 3 June 2026 — neither vendor source shows them, so the review treats the current Starter/Basic/Growth/Enterprise line-up as the source of truth.
