Wordtune Review Australia 2026: A neat rewriting tool that bills in USD and trains on your text

- None for Australia. AI21 Labs processes data outside the EEA/UK/Switzerland, including in the United States.
The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Wordtune does one thing well: you write a clumsy sentence, it offers cleaner ways to say it — shorter, longer, more formal, more casual — right inside Google Docs, Word, Gmail and your browser. If your problem is "my emails and reports read awkwardly," it's a tidy, low-friction fix. But it's a narrow tool, not a full writing assistant, and for Australians the fine print matters. Prices are in USD only (Advanced USD$6.99/mo, Unlimited USD$9.99/mo ≈ AUD$13.99 at 1.40), GST is added at checkout rather than shown in the price, there's no Australian data residency, support is email and help-centre only with no AU presence, and the contract is governed by Israeli law. The catch that should give business users pause: by default Wordtune trains its models on your input and output on an anonymised basis — you only stop that by buying a separate "Traceless" subscription. For a sole trader polishing emails, the free or Advanced tier is fine. For anyone handling client or commercial text, read the data section before you paste anything sensitive in.

What Wordtune is
Wordtune is an AI rewriting and editing assistant built around one core trick: you select a sentence, and it shows you several cleaner ways to say the same thing. You can nudge each suggestion shorter or longer, or more formal or more casual. Around that sit grammar and spelling correction, a summariser for articles and long documents, tone adjustment, synonyms, and a text generator that drafts from a short prompt.
It isn't a blank-page ghostwriter the way some tools are. The heart of it is taking text you've already written and making it read better. That's a real, common problem — most business writing is awkward first drafts — and Wordtune is built to fix exactly that, where you already work.
It's made by AI21 Labs, an Israeli AI company, and claims 10 million-plus users. It runs as a Chrome and Microsoft Edge browser extension, a web app, and an iOS app, with native integrations into Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Gmail and other apps so the suggestions appear inline as you type rather than in a separate window. There's no native Android app and no desktop application beyond the browser extensions.
One fact every business reader should note up front: Wordtune's terms state that, unless you're on a specific plan that says otherwise, it may use your input and output on an anonymised basis to train its algorithms. There's a paid "Traceless" option that deletes your text seconds after it's generated and trains on nothing — but the default is the opposite of that. More on this below.
What it costs in Australia
Here's the first friction point for Australians. On wordtune.com, Wordtune prices in US dollars only — no native AUD price, and no GST-inclusive local tax invoice, with GST and any card conversion added at checkout rather than shown in the headline number. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously said so without qualification. The iPhone app does bill in AUD with GST included, at about three times the price; see below.) Annual billing knocks the rate down, and there's a three-day free trial on the paid tiers.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx AUD (≈1.40) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (Free) | $0 | $0 | 10 rewrites/AI suggestions a day, 3 AI summaries a month, unlimited spelling and grammar checks |
| Advanced | $6.99/mo (or $4.89/mo billed annually) | ≈ $9.79/mo | 30 rewrites a day, 15 AI summaries a month, unlimited grammar and AI recommendations |
| Unlimited | $9.99/mo (or $6.99/mo billed annually) | ≈ $13.99/mo | Unlimited rewrites, summaries, grammar and spelling, plus vocabulary and clarity enhancements and premium support |
| Teams | $15.99/seat/mo (or $7.99/seat/mo billed annually) | ≈ $22.39/seat/mo | Everything in Unlimited plus centralised billing, enterprise features and business support |
Pricing as of 3 June 2026, from Wordtune's own pricing page and help-centre plans article, shown in USD. AUD figures are our own conversion at 1.40 and are indicative only — your actual charge depends on the card rate and GST applied at checkout. The free tier's 10-rewrites-a-day cap is a real limit, not a soft one.
The one AUD price is the dear one. The Australian App Store listing declares "priceCurrency":"AUD" with AI21 Labs, Inc. as seller of record and sells Premium at A$39.99/month or A$199.99/year, GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. Against the web that is about three times the US$9.99 (≈A$13.99) Unlimited monthly rate, and roughly 55% over the US$6.99/month annual rate. Buying through Apple is the only way to get a GST-inclusive Australian tax invoice out of Wordtune, and the premium is many times the credit. Subscribe on the web. Read 21 September 2026.
Value verdict: The free tier is genuinely usable for light, occasional polishing, and Advanced at USD$6.99/month is fair for what it does. But you're paying in a foreign currency with GST bolted on at the till, and the headline USD$9.99 Unlimited tier lands closer to AUD$13.99 once converted — competitive, but not the bargain the US sticker price suggests. The bigger value question is the data default: to use Wordtune without it training on your text, you need the separate Traceless arrangement, which adds cost and complexity. For a tool whose whole job is editing your private emails and documents, that's a real asterisk on the price.
How it works in practice
The appeal is the lack of friction. Install the browser extension, and Wordtune appears inside Google Docs, Word on the web, Gmail and most text fields. Highlight a sentence, and it offers rewrites in a small pop-up; click the one you like and it replaces your text. The "shorten," "expand," "formal" and "casual" controls are the genuinely useful part — they turn a single awkward line into a handful of cleaner options in a second or two.
The summariser is handy for skimming a long article or document down to the key points, though the free tier's three-a-month cap means you'll hit the wall quickly if you lean on it. The grammar and spelling checks are unlimited even on free, which makes Wordtune a reasonable always-on proofreader.
Where it's thinner is anything beyond rewriting. The text generator drafts from a prompt, but it's not as capable as a general-purpose assistant, and Wordtune doesn't try to be one. If you want a tool that researches, drafts long-form, and reasons through a brief, this isn't it. Wordtune is a sentence-level editor that happens to live where you write — judge it on that, not as a ChatGPT rival.
What it does well
- It fixes awkward writing where you already work. Inline in Google Docs, Word and Gmail, no copy-paste shuffle. For polishing emails and reports, that's the whole point and it's well done.
- The rewrite controls are genuinely useful. Shorten, expand, formal, casual — turning one clumsy line into several clean options is fast and reliable.
- Unlimited grammar and spelling, even on free. A solid always-on proofreader without paying anything.
- Low learning curve. Install the extension and it just appears. A non-technical user gets value in minutes.
- Large, established user base. 10 million-plus users and a well-rated Chrome extension — this is a mature product, not a weekend project.
What to watch out for
- It trains on your text by default. Wordtune's terms say it may use your input and output (anonymised) to train its models unless you're on a plan that says otherwise. Stopping that needs the separate "Traceless" option. For client or commercial writing, this is the headline concern.
- USD-only pricing on the web, GST added at checkout. No native AUD price there and no GST-inclusive local tax invoice, so the real cost is higher than the US sticker once conversion and tax land. The iPhone app does bill in AUD with GST included — A$39.99/month — but that is about three times the web rate. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)
- No Australian data residency. AI21 Labs processes data on servers outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, including in the United States. There's no AU hosting region.
- No AU support and Israeli governing law. Support is help-centre and email only, with no Australian office or business hours. The terms are governed by the laws of Israel, with disputes heard in Tel Aviv-Yafo courts — a long way from an Australian buyer.
- No published SOC 2 or ISO 27001. Wordtune states it honours GDPR and CCPA rights, but publishes no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP certification. That matters if you're buying for an organisation with a procurement checklist.
- It's a narrow tool. Excellent at rewriting, limited at everything else. If you want drafting, research or reasoning, you'll need something broader.
Australian fit
- Available in Australia: Yes — the browser extensions, web app and iOS app all work in Australia.
- Pricing in AUD: On the web, no — USD only, and our AUD figures there are indicative conversions at 1.40. In the iPhone app, yes, at A$39.99/month or A$199.99/year with GST included — about three times the web monthly rate, so use it only if a claimable Australian tax invoice is worth that to you. (Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously read "No. USD only.")
- GST: Not included in the displayed price. Added at checkout rather than shown up front; no GST-inclusive local tax invoice from an Australian entity.
- Data residency: None for Australia. AI21 Labs processes data outside the EEA/UK/Switzerland, including in the United States.
- Local support: None AU-specific — help centre and email only.
- Training on your data: Yes, by default. Wordtune may use your input and output (anonymised) to train its models unless you take the separate "Traceless" option, which deletes text seconds after generation and trains on nothing.
- Governing law: Israel (courts of Tel Aviv-Yafo).
Alternatives
| Tool | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| Grammarly | A broader writing assistant — grammar, tone and rewriting — with a clearer enterprise security story if you're buying for a team. |
| ChatGPT / Claude | If you want drafting, research and reasoning, not just sentence-level rewriting. More capable, less "inline as you type." |
| Microsoft Copilot / Google Gemini (in Workspace) | If you already pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, the built-in AI rewrites text where you work without a second subscription, and your data sits under your existing enterprise agreement. |
Bottom line
Wordtune is a good tool at a narrow job. If your problem is "my writing reads awkwardly and I want cleaner sentences inside the apps I already use," it solves that quickly and cheaply, and the free tier is enough to decide whether it suits you. For a sole trader or a student polishing emails and essays, it's an easy enough recommendation on the free or Advanced tier.
It scores 15 — solid, not stellar — for honest Australian reasons. The pricing is USD-only with GST bolted on at checkout, so the real cost is higher than the US number suggests. There's no AU data residency, no local support, and the contract answers to Israeli law. And the default that your text is used to train the models — reversible only by paying for "Traceless" — is the kind of thing an Australian business handling client or commercial information needs to read carefully before pasting anything in. None of that makes Wordtune a bad tool. It makes it a narrow, capable rewriter that asks Australians to accept some friction and a data trade-off. Buy it for what it is, not for what a broader assistant would be. We'll refresh this if the pricing, the data policy or the AU availability moves.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Usable free tier and fair USD rates, but USD-only on the web with GST at checkout, and avoiding model-training needs the extra-cost "Traceless" option. The App Store's AUD alternative is worse, not better — A$39.99/month is about three times the web rate. (Rationale expanded 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.) |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Installs as a browser extension and appears inline in Docs, Word and Gmail; a non-technical user gets value in minutes |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | Strong, reliable rewriting plus tone, summaries and grammar — but narrow; not a drafting, research or reasoning tool |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AU data residency or support, Israeli governing law, and trains on your text by default — the three that matter, all unchanged. The web is USD-only. An AUD, GST-inclusive App Store path exists (A$39.99/month) but costs about three times that rate, so it earns no credit. (Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.) |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | 10M-plus users and a mature product, but support is help-centre/email only, no AU presence, and no published SOC 2 or ISO 27001 |
| Total | 15/25 | ⭐⭐⭐ Good |
Update history
- 21 Sep 2026 — Wordtune does bill Australians in Australian dollars — in the iPhone app, at roughly three times the web price. No score moves. This review says Wordtune "prices in US dollars only" with "no native AUD price" and "no GST-inclusive local tax invoice". The Australian App Store listing declares
"priceCurrency":"AUD", names AI21 Labs, Inc. as seller and sells Premium at A$39.99/month or A$199.99/year, GST included, on an Apple tax invoice — which is exactly the GST-inclusive local tax invoice this review said did not exist. And it is the expensive door. The web Unlimited tier is US$9.99/month, about A$13.99 — so A$39.99 in the app is close to three times it — and the annual web rate of US$6.99/month (≈A$9.79) compares with A$199.99/year, about A$15.15/month ex-GST, roughly 55% dearer. Australian Fit holds at 2/5 and Value for Money at 3/5. Two of the row's five named failures (currency, GST invoice) are technically corrected, but only on a checkout a reader should be steered away from, and the three that matter most — no AU data residency or support, Israeli governing law, and training on your text by default — are untouched. The review now gives both prices and says which to use. Was: "USD-only pricing... No native AUD price and no GST-inclusive local tax invoice." Frequently asked questions
Is Wordtune available in Australia?
Yes — the browser extensions, web app and iOS app all work here. But there's no AU support, no local office or business hours, and the contract is governed by Israeli law with disputes heard in Tel Aviv-Yafo courts.
Does Wordtune charge in AUD?
No. Wordtune prices in US dollars only, with no AUD price and no GST-inclusive local tax invoice — GST and card conversion are added at checkout, so the real cost is higher than the US sticker. Advanced is USD$6.99/mo; Unlimited USD$9.99/mo (≈ A$13.99).
Is there a free plan?
Yes, and it's genuinely usable for light polishing — 10 rewrites a day, three AI summaries a month, and unlimited grammar and spelling checks. There's also a three-day trial on the paid tiers. Be aware the free and standard plans train on your text by default.
Does Wordtune train on my text?
Yes, by default. Its terms say it may use your input and output (anonymised) to train its models unless you take the separate, extra-cost "Traceless" option, which deletes text seconds after generation. For client or commercial writing, this is the headline concern — read it before pasting anything sensitive.
Who is Wordtune best for?
Sole traders and students who want cleaner sentences inside Google Docs, Word and Gmail — it does that one job well and cheaply. It's a narrow sentence-level editor, not a drafting, research or reasoning tool; for those, Grammarly, ChatGPT or your existing Microsoft 365 / Workspace AI go further.
