GitHub Copilot's AI Credits Billing: What It Means for Australians (2026)
Updated: 25 June 2026 · Category: Coding & Development
What changed
From 1 June 2026, every GitHub Copilot plan stopped counting "premium requests" and started consuming GitHub AI Credits. Each plan now bundles a fixed monthly allowance of credits; chat, agent work and the Copilot CLI draw it down at each model's published token rate; and once the allowance is gone you either buy more credits or stop. The conversion is flat and easy to hold in your head: 1 AI credit = US$0.01, so a US$10 allowance is 1,000 credits (GitHub Docs — individual plans; GitHub Docs — usage-based billing for individuals, checked 25 June 2026).
The numbers, straight from GitHub's pricing tables (GitHub Docs, checked 25 June 2026):
| Plan | Price (USD) | Included AI Credits / month | What still costs nothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | A small credit allowance + 2,000 code completions | Code completions |
| Pro | $10/mo | 1,500 (1,000 base + 500 flex) | Completions + Next Edit suggestions |
| Pro+ | $39/mo | 7,000 (3,900 + 3,100) | Completions + Next Edit suggestions |
| Max | $100/mo | 20,000 | Completions + Next Edit suggestions |
| Business | $19/user/mo | 1,900 per user, pooled (promo 3,000 to ~1 Sep 2026) | Completions + Next Edit suggestions |
| Enterprise | $39/user/mo | 3,900 per user, pooled (promo 7,000 to ~1 Sep 2026) | Completions + Next Edit suggestions |
The two things that matter most are easy to miss. First, code completions and Next Edit suggestions never touch your credits — if you mostly want ghost-text autocomplete, this change barely affects you. Second, the old safety net is gone: Copilot used to fall back to a cheaper model and keep working once you hit a cap. Now, when the credits and any admin budget run out, heavy agent users pay on demand at US$0.01 per credit or stop (GitHub Docs — usage-based billing for organizations and enterprises, checked 25 June 2026).
For team plans, credits are pooled at the billing-entity level rather than locked to each seat, so power users can draw more while lighter users leave headroom. Through to about 1 September 2026, Business and Enterprise carry promotional allowances (3,000 and 7,000 credits per user) above the standard 1,900 and 3,900.
What it means for cost predictability
This is the part to read twice. A flat monthly seat used to be the whole bill. Now the seat buys you a budget, and your real cost depends on how hard you lean on the agent.
If you mostly write code with autocomplete and the occasional chat, your bill is effectively unchanged — completions are free and 1,500 credits cover a lot of light chat. If you run long, autonomous, multi-file agent sessions on a strong model, you can burn a month's allowance in days, and the meter keeps running at a penny a credit after that. The honest framing for a small Australian team: model your token spend before you assume US$10 is the ceiling. Watch the agent-heavy developers, set an admin budget cap, and treat the first two or three invoices as your real calibration.
The Australian angle
None of the AU friction has eased. GitHub still bills in US dollars only — there is no AUD pricing and no Australian inference region. Expect roughly 10% GST added at checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules, and confirm the GST line on your first invoice is a compliant tax invoice for your accountant.
Landed in Australian money at AUD ≈ 1.40 with about 10% GST on top, the seats come to roughly ~A$17/month inc GST for Pro, ~A$67/month inc GST for Pro+, ~A$32/user/month inc GST for Business and ~A$171/month inc GST for Max — and that is before a single dollar of overage. The metered model adds a second, variable line to that base that didn't exist this time last year. For AU finance teams used to a fixed software subscription, a usage-based developer tool is a small but real budgeting change: it needs a cap and a watch, not a set-and-forget.
Does it change our recommendation?
No score change. Our GitHub Copilot review already documented the 1 June 2026 move to credit billing and rated the tool 19/25 (Very Good), with the new model flagged as a bounded source of bill uncertainty. The verified per-plan numbers above confirm that read rather than upset it: completions stay free, base seat prices held, and the exposure is real only for heavy agent users.
What this update sharpens is the buying advice. Copilot is still the cheapest serious option and the safe default — but "cheapest" now comes with a footnote. Start on the free tier, move to Pro when you hit the ceiling, and if your team runs agent-heavy workflows, set an admin budget and price the overage in deliberately. If you want the most powerful raw agent and are comparing on capability rather than cost, our Cursor vs GitHub Copilot comparison is the next read.
