Stack AI Review (2026): The YC No-Code Agent Builder Asana Just Bought, Judged for Australians
- From
- Free · paid tiers on request
The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictThe verdict: Stack AI is a capable no-code platform for building AI agents that do real work inside your business systems — and it carries the security stack to satisfy a compliance officer. But it's built for enterprises, not the corner-shop operator. The pricing page has a free tier, a "call us" Enterprise tier, and nothing in between, so a Melbourne small business has no clear paid entry point. It's USD-only, US-hosted, with no Australian data region. And as of May 2026 it's owned by Asana, which adds a question mark over where the standalone product goes next. Strong tool, weak local fit. Score: 16/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (Australian Fit gate applies — see scoring). Not a category Top Pick.
What it is
Stack AI is a platform for building AI agents without writing code. You assemble a workflow in a drag-and-drop builder — pull in data, point an agent at a task, connect it to your other software — and it runs the job for you. Think contract review, document data extraction, ticket triage, filling out RFPs and questionnaires, due-diligence research. The agent reads, decides, and acts inside the systems where your work already lives.
It's not a chatbot you sit and talk to. It's closer to a configurable digital process worker — set it up once, then hand it repeatable jobs.
The company has a genuine pedigree. Stack AI was founded by two MIT researchers, Tony Rosinol and Bernard Aceituno, and came through Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch. It's US-based — sources put it between New York and Jersey City — and raised roughly US$20 million before the event that now defines its story: on 28 May 2026, Asana acquired Stack AI for US$75 million. The founders joined Asana, and the product is being folded into Asana's pitch to be "the operating system for human-agent teams." We'll come back to what that means for you.
All of which puts it squarely in AI Automation & Integration — tools that connect your systems and do work across them — with a clear secondary identity as an AI agent builder.
What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)
Here's the first and biggest catch for an Australian small business: Stack AI publishes only two plans — Free and Enterprise. There is no mid-tier paid plan listed on the pricing page. You either use the free tier or you "get a custom quote." For a 35-year-old operator who wants a predictable monthly bill, that's a real gap.
Stack AI prices in US dollars. There's no AUD billing toggle. We convert at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 and show figures ex-GST: a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is generally not charged GST on an imported digital service, and other buyers should allow about 10% on top.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx A$/mo (ex-GST) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | A$0 | 500 runs/mo, 2 projects, 1 seat, community (Discord) support |
| Enterprise | Custom | Quote only | Custom runs, unlimited projects, custom seats, dedicated infrastructure, on-prem/VPC deployment, SSO, access control, dedicated support |
That's the entire public price list, confirmed on stackai.com/pricing as at 18 June 2026. The Free plan's headline limit is 500 runs per month — a "run" being one execution of a workflow. For testing and a light personal automation, fine. For anything doing real volume, you'll hit the ceiling quickly, and the only documented next step is a sales call.
There is no published per-seat or per-month Enterprise figure. Stack AI's own pricing page lists the tier as "custom" only, so the real number is whatever your sales rep negotiates — get it in writing before you commit.
The honest GST line: Stack AI bills in USD, and its public plans carry no AUD or ABN option, so we can't confirm the exact AUD price or GST handling at checkout from a primary invoice. GST treatment on US-billed SaaS depends on whether you're registered and have supplied your ABN. Confirm the FX and GST treatment of any Enterprise quote with your accountant before you sign.
How it works / features (be specific)
Stack AI is built around a visual workflow builder where you drag nodes onto a canvas and wire them together. The core pieces:
Agents and workflows. You define what an agent should do, give it access to data and tools, and let it run. Stack AI describes itself as LLM-agnostic — you choose the underlying model (OpenAI, Anthropic and others) rather than being locked to one. For a business, that means you can pick the model that suits the task and swap it later.
Integrations. Stack AI advertises 100-plus enterprise integrations — the connectors that let an agent reach into Salesforce, Slack, Google Workspace and similar systems to pull data and take action. This is the part that separates it from a tool that only talks; it actually does things inside your stack.
Human-in-the-loop oversight. You can build checkpoints where a person reviews or approves before the agent proceeds. For anything touching money, contracts or customer data, that's not a nice-to-have — it's the difference between automation you can trust and automation you can't.
Deployment options. This is where the enterprise DNA shows. Stack AI offers four deployment models, from standard multi-tenant cloud up to fully air-gapped on-premise, plus VPC. Most small-business tools give you one option (their cloud). Stack AI gives a regulated buyer a way to keep everything inside their own walls.
Audit logs, access control, SSO. Standard enterprise governance furniture, gated to the Enterprise plan.
A concrete example. A mid-sized finance firm could build an agent that reads an inbound loan application, extracts the key figures from the attached documents, cross-checks them against a policy database, drafts a summary, and routes anything outside tolerance to a human for sign-off. Set up once, runs on every application. That's the promise, and on a well-scoped, document-heavy task it's a sensible fit.
What it does well
The security and compliance stack is genuinely strong. Stack AI holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR compliance, encrypts data with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.3 in transit, and commits in its data processing addendums to not training AI models on your data. For a finance, legal or healthcare buyer, that's the table-stakes list, and Stack AI ticks it.
Deployment flexibility is real. On-premise and air-gapped options mean a buyer with hard data-control requirements can run it without sending anything to a shared cloud. Very few no-code agent builders offer that.
It does work, not just chat. The 100-plus integrations and the document-processing focus mean Stack AI is built to act inside your systems — extract, route, draft, update — rather than just answer questions. That's the right shape for back-office automation.
Model choice is yours. Being LLM-agnostic means you're not betting your workflow on one vendor's model staying best (or cheapest) forever.
Where it falls short
No tool is faultless, and here are the real ones.
There's no paid plan for a small business. This is the headline problem for our readers. You get a capped free tier or an enterprise sales call — nothing in between. A solo operator or small team that outgrows 500 runs a month has no self-serve upgrade path and no published price. That alone rules it out for a lot of Australian SMBs who just want to swipe a card and get on with it.
"No-code" still demands process thinking. You don't write code, but you do have to design the workflow — define the steps, the data, the tool permissions, the human checkpoints. A business owner with no automation background will need to invest real time before this earns its keep. Budget days, not minutes.
It's enterprise-shaped. The whole product — the deployment models, the governance, the "get a quote" pricing — is built for organisations with an IT function and a procurement process. If that's not you, you're not the target customer, and it'll feel like it.
The Asana acquisition adds uncertainty. Asana bought Stack AI in May 2026 and is folding it into its own platform. The messaging is upbeat for now, but acquisitions reshape roadmaps, pricing and support, and Asana has made no commitment that the standalone product's pricing or roadmap will stay as they are. Anyone adopting Stack AI today should treat its long-term independence as an open question.
It's USD-first and US-hosted. For an Australian buyer, the currency friction and the lack of an onshore data region are genuine costs (more below).
Australian fit
This is where Stack AI loses most of its points.
Is it Australian? No. It's a US company — founded by MIT researchers, YC-backed, headquartered in the US, and now owned by Asana (also US). There's no Australian office, founder story or local presence on the record.
Data residency. This is the weak spot. Stack AI's documentation does not publish an Australian or Sydney hosting region. The standard offering is multi-tenant US cloud, with models hosted on Azure and AWS Bedrock; the docs note you "can choose the AWS region for data residency requirements," but no specific Australian region is named, and the option reads as an enterprise/Bedrock configuration rather than something the standard product offers. AWS does run a Sydney (ap-southeast-2) region in general, but Stack AI's own docs don't confirm it's available or default for Australian customers — so don't assume it. For a business that needs customer data to stay onshore, the only safe answer today is the on-premise/VPC route on the Enterprise plan — which means a sales process, not a signup.
AUD billing. No. Plans are quoted and charged in US dollars, with the currency risk and GST friction that brings. There's no AUD or ABN option on the public plans.
AU support. Support on the free tier is a community Discord; dedicated support is an Enterprise feature. No primary source confirms Australian-timezone support or an AU-hours SLA, so if local-hours support matters to you, get it documented in the Enterprise contract rather than assumed.
Net: Australian Fit is weak. No local presence, no published onshore data region, USD-only billing, and no clear paid tier for a local small business. The strong global security stack doesn't rescue the local fit, because the things that make a tool Australian-friendly — onshore data, AUD billing, local support — aren't there.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3 / 5 | Capable free tier for testing, but the jump straight to "custom Enterprise" leaves no priced path for a small business. USD-only. |
| Ease of Use | 3 / 5 | Drag-and-drop builder lowers the barrier; real workflows still demand process design and time. |
| Feature Depth | 4 / 5 | LLM-agnostic, 100+ integrations, human-in-the-loop, four deployment models incl. on-prem. Strong, enterprise-grade depth. |
| Australian Fit | 2 / 5 | US company, USD-only billing, no published Australian data region, community-only support on the free tier. |
| Reliability & Support | 4 / 5 | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, AES-256/TLS 1.3, enterprise governance. Free-tier support is Discord-only. |
| Total | 16 / 25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
The Australian Fit gate. Australian Fit scores 2/5, below the 4/5 threshold. Under our gate, that means Stack AI cannot be a five-star tool and cannot be named a category Top Pick, regardless of its raw total. The 16-point total lands it in the four-star band on the maths anyway — but the gate is the reason it can't climb higher even if a later update sharpened its features. To be Excellent for Australians, a tool has to be excellent for Australians. (How we score.)
Note on category. This is a Finance/Legal/HR-adjacent automation tool — people will point Stack AI agents at contracts, financial documents and compliance workflows. Stack AI is software for building automations; it does not replace qualified legal, financial or other professional advice, and any agent you build to handle regulated work needs a qualified human reviewing its output.
Bottom line
For the enterprise or regulated buyer — a finance firm, a healthcare provider, a legal team with an IT function — Stack AI is a credible option. The SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR stack, the on-premise and VPC deployment, and the no-training-on-your-data commitment are exactly what your compliance team will ask for. Put it on the evaluation list, and use the Enterprise process to nail down an Australian data region before you commit.
For the Melbourne small business owner — this isn't built for you, and the pricing page proves it. A capped free tier and a "call sales" Enterprise tier with no published price is not how a small business buys software. Add the USD billing, the lack of an onshore data region, and the post-acquisition uncertainty, and there are easier, more local options for automating your back office. Try the free tier if you're curious about no-code agents — but don't plan a business around it.
On the Asana acquisition — it's a vote of confidence in the technology, but a question mark over the product's future shape. If you adopt Stack AI today, do it with eyes open: the roadmap, pricing and support all now answer to Asana.
The verdict stands: a four-star tool on the maths, capped there by a weak Australian fit, and not a category Top Pick. Genuinely strong engineering and security — but a poor match for the Australian small business this publication is written for.
Update history
- 29 Sep 2026 — verified by browser; unchanged.
stackai.com/pricingstill shows only Free ($0: 500 runs a month, 2 projects, 1 seat) and Enterprise (custom quote). NoA$. The pricing section described its AUD column as a "GST-inclusive landed cost"; under our house rule conversions are shown ex-GST, and with only a free plan and a quote there was no figure to change, so only the wording is corrected. Score unchanged. Source - 18 June 2026 — First reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
Is Stack AI available in Australia?
Yes — it's a US company with no Australian office, but Australian users can sign up. There's a free tier; the only paid tier is a quote-based Enterprise plan.
Does Stack AI charge in AUD?
No. Plans are quoted and charged in US dollars, with no AUD or ABN option on the public plans, so you wear the FX and GST friction. Confirm both with your accountant before signing.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free tier gives 500 workflow runs a month, 2 projects, 1 seat and Discord-only support — fine for testing, but you'll hit the ceiling fast, and the only documented next step is an Enterprise sales call.
Is my data stored in Australia?
Not by default. Stack AI's docs don't confirm an Australian region for the standard product. The only safe onshore route today is the on-premise/VPC option on Enterprise — which means a sales process, not a signup.
Is Stack AI right for an Australian small business?
No. There's no priced mid-tier plan — just a capped free tier or a "call sales" Enterprise quote. It's enterprise-shaped, USD-only and US-hosted. Strong tool, but built for organisations with IT and procurement.
