Runway vs Google Veo for Australians 2026 — which AI video tool wins
Our pick: Google Veo 3.1. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Editor's note: Every score and Australian Fit rating below is carried verbatim from our full reviews of Runway and Google Veo, not re-scored for this piece. USD figures convert at the editorial standard of AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD; GST treatment is noted per tool. See our methodology for how we score and gate.
Two of the best AI video tools an Australian can reach in 2026 are Runway and Google Veo. They solve the same job — turn a prompt or an image into short video — but they pull in opposite directions on the thing this publication cares most about. Runway makes some of the best clips you can buy and bills you in USD with no Australian data region. Veo makes very good clips, charges you in AUD with the GST sorted and a tax invoice you can claim, and locks the video inside a wider Google bundle.
Both review at the top of "Very Good": Runway at 19/25, Veo at 18/25. The one-point gap is not the story. The story is which trade-off fits your work. For a Melbourne small-business owner producing social and product video, the answer is sharper than the raw totals suggest.
Here's the honest head-to-head.

Same star band, different gate: under our Australian Fit gate, a tool can only be named a category Top Pick with Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. Veo clears it at 4/5; Runway does not, at 2/5 — so however good its video, Runway cannot be the category winner for Australians.
What both tools do
Both take a text prompt or a still image and return a short video clip. Both are reachable from a browser, need no install, and put first usable output in front of you inside 15 minutes. Both target the same Australian buyer: a marketer, content creator or small-business owner who wants social clips, product teasers and B-roll without hiring a crew or paying for stock footage.
Both also share the same hard limit for sensitive work: neither offers Australian data residency. Runway stores and renders offshore in the US and EU; Veo runs on Google's global infrastructure. For ordinary marketing content that is a non-issue. For confidential or regulated footage, neither is the right tool — and no amount of feature depth changes that.
Where they diverge is the surrounding deal. Runway is a dedicated creative suite with the deepest editing toolkit in the category. Veo is a model bundled inside a Google AI subscription, with native audio as its signature trick.
Pricing in Australia
This is where the two tools stop being comparable on a spreadsheet.
Runway bills in USD only. There's no AUD option, so every figure carries the ~1.40 conversion plus any foreign-transaction fee your card charges.
- Free: US$0 — a one-off 125 credits (about 25 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo). Doesn't refresh; it's a trial, not an allowance.
- Standard (annual): US$12/mo (US$144/yr) — roughly A$17/mo ex-GST.
- Pro (annual): US$28/mo (US$336/yr) — roughly A$39/mo ex-GST, about A$39 ex-GST.
- Max (annual): US$76/mo (US$912/yr) — roughly A$106/mo ex-GST.
Everything runs on a credit meter — roughly 5 credits/sec for Gen-4 Turbo, more for Gen-4 and Gen-4.5 — so spend is unpredictable and the cheap-looking Standard plan can run dry fast. The GST and ABN handling is the bigger catch: as an offshore digital supplier Runway should apply Australian GST and issue a compliant tax invoice, but this isn't documented anywhere on its own pages, and we couldn't confirm ABN entry at checkout. If you claim input tax credits, budget for that uncertainty and check your first invoice.
Veo bills in AUD, GST-inclusive. There's no standalone Veo plan — video is bundled into Google's AI subscriptions.
- Free: $0/mo — everyday Gemini help, effectively no real video generation.
- Google AI Pro: $32.99/mo (GST-incl.) — Veo 3.1 with limited quota, Flow credits, 2 TB storage. About a straight USD conversion plus GST: fair, not gouged.
- Google AI Ultra: from $149.99/mo (higher tier $329.99/mo, both GST-incl.) — full Veo access, up to ~20× Pro usage, 20 TB+ storage.
Because Google bills through an Australian entity, the price you see is the price you pay — no surprise +10% at checkout — and you get a GST-compliant ABN tax invoice from your Google payments centre, claimable if you're registered. That's a genuine Australian-fit win.
The pricing takeaway: on the sticker, Runway's Standard at ~A$18/mo ex-GST undercuts Veo's Pro at $32.99/mo. But Runway's number is soft — credit spend is variable, FX and card fees stack on top, and the GST invoice you'd claim isn't documented. Veo's $32.99 is a fixed, claimable, all-in figure. For a business that wants a predictable line item and a clean tax invoice, Veo is the cleaner buy in AUD even though it's nominally dearer.
Where Runway wins
Raw video quality and editing depth. This is Runway's case, and it's a strong one. Its Gen-4 family produces the most cinematic short clips we've tested, and its standout is shot-to-shot consistency — keeping a character or scene coherent across multiple generations, historically the hardest thing for AI video to nail. Runway scores a clear 5/5 on Feature Depth; Veo sits at 4/5, held back by its 8–10 second clip ceiling.
One toolkit, not a stack. Text-to-video, image-to-video, video-to-video restyling, lip-sync, motion brush, camera controls and upscaling all live under one login. For a small team that would otherwise stitch together three or four point tools, that consolidation is real. The Max tier even buys early access to new models.
A genuinely free look before you buy. The one-off 125 free credits let you generate real Gen-4 Turbo output and judge the quality yourself — though free outputs carry a Runway watermark with no commercial licence, so treat them as a trial, not shippable client work.
If your single priority is the best-looking clip and the most control over it, Runway is the better tool. But remember the gate: at Australian Fit 2/5, it cannot be our category Top Pick for Australians, however good the video.
Where Veo wins
Native, synchronised audio in one pass. Veo generates dialogue with lip-sync, sound effects and ambient sound with the picture, not dubbed on after. Ask for a barista steaming milk in a busy Melbourne café and you get the hiss and the chatter, not a silent loop you have to score. Runway has no equivalent. For social and explainer content, this is the clearest single reason to pick Veo.
It's properly billable in Australia. AUD pricing, GST included, ABN tax invoice. For a tool of this calibre that combination is uncommon, and it's the reason Veo clears the Australian Fit gate at 4/5 while Runway sits at 2/5.
Clean 1080p you can ship. Output drops straight into social or a client deck without looking like a 2024 AI clip, and image-to-video with up to three reference images lets you lock a product or character across shots. Flow adds real directorial control — scene extension, camera presets, object insert/remove.
The catch on Veo's side: there's no Veo-only plan, so a light user subsidises a whole Gemini and storage bundle; generations are quota-limited against opaque daily caps; clips are short; and every output carries an unavoidable (invisible) SynthID watermark. Its Reliability & Support score is 2/5 — Google's uptime is high, but support is self-serve and global, and generation artefacts (warped hands, melting edges) still appear. That's where Runway, at 4/5 on the same criterion, pulls ahead.
Australian fit — the criterion that decides it
This is the publication's defining criterion, and it's where the two tools split hardest.
Runway — Australian Fit 2/5. Fully accessible to Australian users, with solid security (SOC 2 Type II, AES-256 at rest, customer content not used for training) and no China-hosting exposure. But it's USD-only billing with no AUD option, no Australian data region (storage is US/EU), undocumented GST/ABN handling, and US-timezone-only support. It clears a 1 on accessibility alone; the billing, residency and invoicing gaps keep it at 2.
Veo — Australian Fit 4/5. Available in full with no workarounds, native AUD pricing, GST included, and a claimable ABN tax invoice — excellent on the things that matter most locally. It's pulled back from a 5 by the lack of an Australian data-residency guarantee (Google's global infrastructure) and the absence of AU-hours support. Clears the gate, but only just.
Under the Australian Fit gate, Australian Fit ≥ 4/5 is required to be named a category Top Pick. Veo clears it; Runway doesn't. So even though Runway wins on pure capability, Runway cannot be our Video Generation Top Pick for Australians — that gate exists precisely so a tool that bills offshore in USD with no local invoice can't wear the category crown here.
Decision framework — if you're X, pick Y
If you're a small-business owner or solo marketer wanting social clips, product teasers and explainers with sound, billed cleanly in AUD — pick Google Veo (Google AI Pro, $32.99/mo). Native audio, a claimable GST invoice, and 1080p output you can ship. This is the default recommendation for most readers of this publication.
If you're an agency or creative team whose whole job is best-in-class video and deep editing control, and you're comfortable paying in USD on an international card — pick Runway. The Gen-4 family's quality and shot-to-shot consistency, plus the full toolkit under one login, are worth the Australian-fit friction. Just go in clear-eyed about FX, the credit meter, and an undocumented tax invoice.
If you need video with dialogue and ambient sound out of the box — pick Veo. Runway has no native-audio answer.
If you need the longest, most controlled single piece and the deepest edit — pick Runway, and use its motion brush, video-to-video and upscaling. Veo caps at 8–10 seconds per generation; you'd stitch in Flow.
If you want one predictable monthly line item and a tax invoice you can hand your accountant — pick Veo. Runway's credit meter and undocumented GST handling make it the harder tool to budget and claim.
If you handle confidential or regulated footage — neither. Both store and process offshore with no Australian data residency. That's a hard limit for sensitive material, regardless of which makes the nicer clip.
Verdict
This isn't decided by the one-point score gap. Runway (19/25) genuinely makes better video than Veo (18/25) and has the deeper toolkit — its Feature Depth 5/5 against Veo's 4/5 is earned. If raw quality and editing control were the only axes, Runway wins.
But this publication scores for Australians, and on the criterion that defines us they're not close: Veo's Australian Fit is 4/5 to Runway's 2/5. Veo bills in AUD, includes GST, and issues a claimable ABN invoice; Runway bills in USD with no documented local invoice and no AU data region. Under our Australian Fit gate, that makes Google Veo the Video Generation Top Pick for Australians — Runway, for all its quality, can't be named the category winner here.
So: for most Australian creators and small businesses, start on Google AI Pro at $32.99/month and only step up to Ultra at $149.99/month if you generate video most days and keep hitting Pro's quota wall. Choose Runway when output quality and editing depth genuinely outrank everything else and USD billing isn't a dealbreaker — an agency call more than a small-business one. If you can justify both, Veo is your everyday AUD-billed workhorse and Runway is the premium tool you reach for on the hero piece.
Update history
- 21 Sep 2026 — Runway Max's “about A$117 if GST charged” removed. The ex-GST figure in the same sentence, A$106/mo (US$76 at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026)), was already correct and is unchanged, and every other Runway tier in the list was already ex-GST only — Max was the one line carrying a second Australian price. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow ~10% on top. Google Veo's “GST included” statements are untouched: Veo is billed through an Australian entity in AUD at A$32.99 with a claimable ABN tax invoice, so that is the vendor's own tax-inclusive price, which our AUD pricing rule leaves exactly as written — and it is the reason Veo clears the Australian Fit gate at 4/5 while Runway sits at 2/5. No USD price moved and no score changed. Superseded figure kept visible per our price-history rule.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for Australians?
Google Veo, for most. Runway makes slightly better video (19/25 vs 18/25), but Veo wins where it counts locally: AUD pricing, GST included, a claimable ABN invoice, and native audio. It's our Video Generation Top Pick; Runway can't be, at 2/5 Australian Fit.
Which is cheaper in AUD?
On the sticker, Runway's Standard (~A$18/month ex-GST) undercuts Veo's Pro ($32.99/month). But Runway bills in USD on a variable credit meter with FX and card fees on top, so Veo's fixed, claimable $32.99 is the cleaner buy for a business.
Does either bill in AUD?
Only Veo. It's billed through an Australian entity in AUD, GST included, with an ABN tax invoice. Runway is USD-only with undocumented GST and ABN handling — check your first invoice if you claim input tax credits.
Is there a free plan or free trial?
Runway gives you a one-off 125 free credits (about 25 seconds), watermarked and not for commercial use. Veo's free Gemini tier offers effectively no real video generation — you need Google AI Pro at $32.99/month.
Can I keep footage in Australia?
No — neither offers Australian data residency. Runway stores offshore in the US/EU; Veo runs on Google's global infrastructure. For confidential or regulated footage, neither is the right tool.
A note on professional advice
This comparison covers creative video tools, not regulated advice. If you'll use AI-generated video in regulated contexts — financial promotions, health or therapeutic claims, legal or HR communications — get qualified professional advice before you publish. AI video tools don't replace it, and Australian advertising and disclosure rules still apply to whatever you produce.
