The verdict: Zoom's AI splits cleanly into two products, and only one of them matters for Australians today. AI Companion 3.0 is an agentic assistant — it doesn't just summarise your meeting, it searches across your connected tools, drafts the follow-up, and runs simple workflows — and it's included at no extra cost with the paid Zoom Workplace plan most Australian businesses already have. Crucially, it offers genuine Australian data residency and doesn't train its models on your content. The headline 2026 launch, ZoomMate — a US$20-a-month "AI teammate" that autonomously completes work across Salesforce, Jira and Slack — is North America only at launch and not on sale in Australia yet. So the honest advice for an Australian business is: turn on the agentic AI you're already paying for, and watch ZoomMate rather than wait for it. Score: 20/25 — Very Good.
What it is
"Zoom AI" in 2026 is not one product. It's two, and conflating them is the easiest way to overpay or be disappointed.
AI Companion is Zoom's built-in assistant, included with paid Zoom Workplace plans since 2023. Its third major version, AI Companion 3.0, became generally available on 15 December 2025 and turned it from a meeting-summary tool into an agentic one. It now does agentic retrieval (finding answers across your meeting transcripts, notes, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive), an agentic writing mode with a collaborative canvas, personal workflows in beta (it can run recurring follow-up tasks like a daily reflection report), and a deep-research mode in the paid Custom AI Companion add-on. Under the hood it routes between Zoom's own models, OpenAI, Anthropic and NVIDIA's open Nemotron models depending on the task.
ZoomMate is the new, separately-paid layer launched on 1 June 2026. Zoom calls it "the first AI teammate built to turn conversations into completed work." Where AI Companion helps you in and around a meeting, ZoomMate is designed to act on its own afterwards — taking the decisions made in a call and executing the follow-through across connected business systems: Salesforce, Jira, ServiceNow, Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Outlook and SharePoint. It costs US$20 per user per month with a pool of included AI credits.
The catch, for us, is in ZoomMate's fine print: at launch it is "available for online and direct customers in North America," with "EMEA and APAC expected to roll out later this year." Australia sits in APAC. As of this review, you cannot buy ZoomMate here. So most of this review is about AI Companion 3.0 — the part that's actually available to Australians — with ZoomMate flagged as one to watch.
What it costs in Australia
This is where Zoom's AI is unusually friendly to Australian buyers, with one asterisk.
| Product | Price | In Australia | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Companion (with paid Zoom) | Included | Free with your plan | Agentic retrieval, writing, meeting summaries, personal workflows (beta) — no extra charge on a paid Zoom Workplace plan |
| Zoom Workplace Pro (the plan it rides on) | ~A$21/month | Sold in AUD | The base paid plan most small businesses use; AI Companion included |
| AI Companion standalone | US$10/mo (~A$14) | Available | For people on Zoom Basic or without a paid licence who want AI Companion on its own |
| Custom AI Companion add-on | Paid add-on (USD) | Available | Deep research, custom agents, expanded connectors |
| ZoomMate | US$20/user/mo (~A$28) | Not available yet | Autonomous cross-app action; North America only at launch, APAC "later in 2026" |
The standout: if you already pay for Zoom Workplace — and a large share of Australian businesses do — AI Companion 3.0 is included at no additional cost. You are likely already paying for an agentic AI assistant and simply haven't switched it on. Zoom Workplace Pro is sold to Australians in Australian dollars at roughly A$21 a month, so there's no USD conversion or exchange-rate creep on the plan itself.
The asterisks: the standalone AI Companion (US$10), the Custom AI Companion add-on, and ZoomMate (US$20) are priced in US dollars, so those do carry FX and GST-at-checkout. And the exact AUD plan price moves with Zoom's local pricing — confirm the current figure and the GST line on Zoom's Australian pricing page before you commit.
How it works / features
AI Companion 3.0's shift from "summary tool" to "agent" is the real story.
- Agentic retrieval — ask a question and it searches across your meeting history, notes, and connected drives (Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive) to answer it, rather than only summarising the meeting in front of you.
- Agentic writing mode — drafts and refines business documents on a shared canvas you can edit alongside it, rather than dumping text in a chat box.
- Personal workflows (beta) — set it to run recurring follow-up tasks automatically; Zoom's example is a daily reflection report assembled from your day's meetings.
- Deep research mode — in the paid Custom AI Companion, it reads across multiple documents and meetings to produce a consolidated brief.
- Multi-model routing — it picks between Zoom's own models, OpenAI, Anthropic and NVIDIA Nemotron per task, which you don't manage manually.
For the meeting-notetaker job specifically — the reason most people reach for this — it does the table stakes well (live transcription, summaries, action items, ask-me-anything across the call) and then goes a step past rivals by connecting that output to your other tools and acting on it.
What it does well
It's included — so the value is exceptional. For an Australian business already on paid Zoom, turning on an agentic AI assistant costs nothing extra. Nothing else in the meeting-notetaker category gives you this much for $0 marginal spend.
Genuine Australian data residency. This is rare and it matters. Zoom's ZM+ option — its own models plus Anthropic models via Amazon Bedrock — is available in the US, EU and Australia, so AU-hosted customers can keep AI Companion processing aligned to Australian data residency preferences. Customers hosted outside the US and EU can also use the Zoom-hosted-models-only (ZMO) path. For a regulated Australian business, that's a materially better story than the US-only processing most rivals offer.
It doesn't train on your content. Zoom states plainly that it does not use customer audio, video, chat, screen-sharing or other communications-like content to train its own or third-party models. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. For sensitive meetings, that's the assurance you want in writing — and Zoom puts it in writing.
It lives where your meetings already are. No new app, no new login, no migrating your team. For a busy operator, the lowest-friction AI is the one bolted into the tool you already open ten times a day.
Where it falls short
The headline product isn't on sale here. ZoomMate is the genuinely new, genuinely agentic 2026 launch — and Australians can't buy it. "APAC later this year" is a plan, not a date. If autonomous cross-app action is what you actually want, you're waiting.
Agentic features are early. Personal workflows are in beta, and "agentic" assistants across the whole category over-promise on unattended reliability. Treat the autonomous bits as a capable junior that still needs checking, not a set-and-forget colleague.
The best parts cost extra and in USD. Deep research and custom agents sit behind the paid Custom AI Companion add-on, priced in US dollars. The free, included tier is generous but not the whole product.
It assumes you're a Zoom shop. The value case rests on already paying for Zoom Workplace. If your business runs on Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, a standalone notetaker (or your existing platform's own AI) will fit your workflow better than bolting on Zoom for the AI alone.
Australian fit
For the available product — AI Companion 3.0 — the Australian fit is genuinely strong, which is not something we say often in this category.
Currency: The base Zoom Workplace plan is sold in Australian dollars (~A$21/month for Pro). AI Companion is included on top at no extra charge. The standalone AI Companion (US$10), Custom AI Companion add-on, and ZoomMate (US$20) are USD-priced.
GST: Zoom issues Australian tax invoices and charges GST on Australian accounts; confirm the GST line on your invoice as always, but Zoom's local billing is well-established here.
Data residency: Genuinely available. Zoom's ZM+ (Zoom + Anthropic-via-Bedrock) supports Australian data residency preferences, and Australian-hosted customers can keep AI Companion processing aligned accordingly. This is a real differentiator against US-only rivals.
Privacy / training: Zoom does not use customer communications-like content to train its or third-party models. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Local support and presence: Zoom is an established enterprise vendor in Australia with APAC support and a large local business base, so AEST-hours help and account management are realistic in a way most AI-native startups can't match.
The gap: ZoomMate — the marquee 2026 capability — is not yet sold in Australia. The agentic foundation is here; the premium autonomous layer isn't.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 4/5 | AI Companion 3.0 is included free with a paid Zoom plan you likely already have — exceptional value for an agentic assistant. Docked one point because the best capabilities (Custom AI Companion, ZoomMate) cost extra and in USD. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Built into the Zoom you already use — no new app, no migration, enable it in admin. The agentic/workflow features add some learning curve and are partly in beta. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Agentic retrieval, writing, workflows, deep research and multi-model routing are a strong, modern feature set. The deepest autonomy (ZoomMate) isn't available here, which caps the score. |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | Genuine AU data residency (ZM+ in Australia), no training on customer content, native AUD plan billing, established local presence. Held off 5 because the headline ZoomMate is not yet sold in Australia and the add-ons are USD-priced. |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | Enterprise-grade platform, strong security posture, global uptime, real APAC support. Agentic features are new enough to warrant human oversight. |
| Total | 20/25 |
★★★★ Very Good (raw score 20/25)
Australian Fit gate: Australian Fit scores 4/5, which clears the gate threshold. No star cap applies. See our review methodology.
Score status: ratified 23 June 2026 at 20/25 (★★★★ Very Good). Australian Fit is scored 4/5 on the strength of genuine Australian data residency (ZM+ available in AU) and the no-training commitment — a real differentiator in this category — held off 5/5 because the marquee ZoomMate tier is not yet sold in Australia. The score clears the Australian Fit gate; no star cap applies.
Bottom line
If you already pay for Zoom Workplace — and most Australian businesses that run on Zoom do — turn on AI Companion 3.0 today. You're paying for an agentic AI assistant with Australian data residency and no extra charge, and a surprising number of teams simply haven't switched it on. For the meeting-notetaker job, it's among the best value in the category precisely because the marginal cost is zero.
If you're shopping for a standalone notetaker and aren't a Zoom shop, AI Companion's value case weakens — you'd be paying US$10/month for the standalone, at which point a dedicated notetaker or your own platform's AI may suit your workflow better. Compare it against the field in our best AI meeting notetakers for Australians roundup.
If what you want is the autonomous "AI teammate" that finishes work across Salesforce, Jira and Slack on its own — that's ZoomMate, and you can't buy it in Australia yet. Watch for the APAC rollout Zoom has promised "later in 2026," and judge it on availability and AUD pricing when it actually lands here. Until then, it's a headline, not a purchase.
If you handle sensitive data, Zoom's combination of Australian data residency and a no-training commitment makes AI Companion one of the safer choices in this category for an Australian business — but confirm your account is provisioned for AU data residency (ZM+ or ZMO) with your Zoom admin before routing confidential meetings through it.
Update history
- 2 Sep 2026 — Pricing re-verified against Zoom's live pages: no changes. AI Companion is still "included at no additional cost with the paid services in your Zoom user account"; standalone still US$10/month; ZoomMate still US$20/user/month and still restricted to US-hosted infrastructure — APAC (including Australia) not yet available; ZM+ Australian data residency (US/EU/AU) and the no-training commitment both confirmed current. Frequently asked questions
Is Zoom AI Companion available in Australia?
Yes. AI Companion 3.0 is available to Australian Zoom customers and is included at no extra cost with paid Zoom Workplace plans. The separate ZoomMate "AI teammate" tier, launched 1 June 2026, is North America only at launch — Zoom says APAC will follow later in 2026.
Does Zoom AI Companion cost extra?
No, not the core product. AI Companion is included with paid Zoom Workplace plans. There's a US$10/month standalone option for people on Zoom Basic, a paid Custom AI Companion add-on for deep research and custom agents, and the separate ZoomMate tier at US$20/user/month (not yet sold in Australia).
Can I keep my Zoom AI data in Australia?
Yes — this is a genuine strength. Zoom's ZM+ data-residency option (Zoom plus Anthropic models via Amazon Bedrock) supports Australian data residency, and Zoom does not use your meeting content to train its or third-party AI models. Confirm your account is provisioned for AU residency with your admin.
What's the difference between AI Companion and ZoomMate?
AI Companion 3.0 helps you in and around meetings — summaries, retrieval across your tools, drafting, simple workflows — and is included with paid Zoom. ZoomMate is a separately-paid "AI teammate" that autonomously completes follow-up work across apps like Salesforce, Jira and Slack. ZoomMate isn't available in Australia yet.
Should an Australian business buy ZoomMate now?
You can't — it's North America only at launch. The practical move is to use the included AI Companion 3.0 today and reassess ZoomMate on price and availability when it reaches Australia, expected later in 2026.
