Ultimate.ai Review: The AI Customer Support Platform That Became Zendesk AI Agents

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Ultimate.ai no longer exists as a standalone product. Zendesk acquired it in March 2024 and its automation technology now lives inside Zendesk AI Agents (Advanced tier). If you found Ultimate.ai through a recommendation or an older comparison guide and are evaluating it for your Australian business, you are now evaluating Zendesk's AI Agents product — which is capable, has Australian data residency options, and is priced per automated resolution. For existing Zendesk customers, this is worth understanding. For everyone else, the question is whether you want to build your entire support infrastructure around Zendesk's ecosystem.

What Ultimate.ai was — and what it is now
Ultimate.ai was founded in Helsinki, Finland in 2016 as a customer support automation platform. Its core capability was building AI agents that could handle repetitive, high-volume support tickets across chat, messaging, and email — automating deflection so human agents could focus on complex cases. The platform was notable for its no-code bot builder, which allowed support teams to build sophisticated automation flows without engineering involvement.
On 13 March 2024, Zendesk announced its acquisition of Ultimate.ai. The acquisition price was not disclosed. Ultimate's standalone product and brand have wound down. As of 2026, there is no way to subscribe to Ultimate.ai as an independent product. If you visit ultimate.ai or search for it, you will be directed to Zendesk.
The technology now lives inside Zendesk AI Agents, specifically the Advanced tier. This is the most important thing to understand before evaluating this product: you are not buying Ultimate.ai. You are buying Zendesk.
Note (June 2026): Reports indicate Zendesk also subsequently acquired Forethought in 2026, further consolidating its AI automation capabilities. The branding and product naming may continue to evolve. Verify the current product structure with Zendesk directly at time of purchase. What Zendesk AI Agents is
Zendesk AI Agents is the autonomous AI tier within the Zendesk Suite. It comes in two configurations:
Essential (included in Zendesk Suite plans): Basic AI deflection — answering common questions from your knowledge base, handling simple self-service flows. This is the entry-level AI capability. It does not represent Ultimate.ai's depth.
Advanced (the Ultimate.ai lineage): The more capable tier, built on the technology acquired from Ultimate. Advanced AI Agents can understand customer intent across complex multi-turn conversations, pull answers from connected knowledge sources, take conditional actions, and hand off to human agents with full context. Zendesk claims this tier can automate up to 80% of support requests.
Advanced AI Agents are priced per automated resolution — each ticket the AI closes without human escalation. Current pricing is approximately: - US$2.00 per automated resolution (pay-as-you-go) - US$1.50 per automated resolution (committed volume pricing)
At AUD 1.40 per USD: - ~AUD $3.10 per automated resolution (pay-as-you-go, ex-GST) - ~AUD $2.33 per automated resolution (committed volume, ex-GST)
These figures sit on top of a Zendesk Suite base plan. Read from zendesk.com/au/pricing in a browser on an Australian connection, 24 September 2026:
| Plan | Published price (per agent/month, paid yearly) | Approx AUD (ex-GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Support Team | US$19 | ~A$27 |
| Suite Team | US$55 | ~A$77 |
| Suite Professional | US$115 | ~A$162 |
| Suite Enterprise + Copilot | Talk to Sales — no published price | — |
| Add-on: Copilot | US$50 | ~A$70 |
| Add-on: Workforce Engagement Bundle | US$50 | ~A$70 |
⚠ Zendesk does not bill in Australian dollars, and says so on its own Australian page: "Supported currency: currently, Zendesk supports USD, EUR, GBP and BRL." You pay in US dollars and wear the conversion and any card foreign-transaction fee. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our methodology.
(The same page is titled "Starting from £19/month | Zendesk Australia" while its body reads "US$ 19" — a reader who trusts the tab title will be wrong about the currency and the country.)
Sourcing note: the per-resolution figures below are third-party analyses, not a Zendesk published price — Zendesk's pricing page publishes no per-resolution rate at all. The Suite figures above are the vendor's own, read today. Verify both at zendesk.com/au/pricing.
To put the per-resolution cost in practical terms: an Australian business receiving 2,000 support tickets per month, with the AI resolving 70% (1,400 tickets), would pay approximately AUD $3,276–$4,774 per month in per-resolution charges alone (at committed vs. pay-as-you-go rates, inc. GST) — before the Suite base plan fee.
How it works in practice
Zendesk AI Agents sit inside the Zendesk ecosystem. When a customer submits a ticket via any channel (email, web form, chat, voice, messaging), the AI agent intercepts it before a human sees it.
The AI reads the customer's message, classifies the intent, searches connected knowledge sources (your Help Centre, Macros, ticket history), and either resolves the issue autonomously or routes to a human with context attached. For the Advanced tier, the AI can conduct multi-turn conversations, ask clarifying questions, and take conditional actions based on the customer's responses.
For Zendesk Suite customers, the setup is relatively low-friction. You configure the AI agent through the Zendesk Admin Centre, connect it to your Help Centre content, define escalation rules, and deploy. For a team already familiar with Zendesk, adding AI Agents is an incremental configuration step rather than a full platform migration.
The reporting integrates into Zendesk's existing analytics layer — you see automated resolution rates, escalation reasons, and AI performance metrics alongside your human agent data.
What it does well
Seamless Zendesk integration. If your support team already runs on Zendesk, adding AI Agents is the path of least resistance. No new platform, no data migration, no retraining on a new interface. The AI works within the workflow your team already uses.
Australian data residency is available. This is a meaningful differentiator from many competitors. Zendesk offers a Data Center Location add-on for Australian and other regional data hosting. This feature is included on Suite Professional (US$115/agent/month) and Suite Enterprise (US$169/agent/month) plans. For Australian businesses that need customer data to remain in-country under the Privacy Act, this is one of very few enterprise customer service platforms that provides a documented path to AU data residency.
Established local presence. Zendesk has an Australian entity, operates in AUD, has a Sydney presence, and provides support in AEST-compatible hours. This is real local accountability that many international competitors lack.
Per-resolution pricing aligns incentives. You pay when the AI succeeds — when it actually closes a ticket without human escalation. If your AI resolution rate is low, your costs are low. This is different from a flat per-agent fee where you pay regardless of AI performance.
Multi-channel coverage. Email, chat, web form, WhatsApp, Messenger, and voice are all handled through the unified Zendesk platform. No separate tools per channel.
What it doesn't do well
You cannot use it without Zendesk. This is the structural limitation. Zendesk AI Agents Advanced requires a Zendesk Suite subscription. If you run your support on Freshdesk, Intercom, or another helpdesk, you cannot access this AI capability without migrating your entire support operation. The per-resolution AI pricing makes sense inside Zendesk's ecosystem — it makes no sense as a standalone consideration.
Per-resolution costs can escalate quickly. At AUD $2.33–$3.10 per resolved ticket, a high-volume operation accumulates real cost. A business resolving 5,000 tickets per month via AI pays approximately AUD $11,650–$17,050 per month in AI resolution fees — on top of agent seat costs. Model this carefully before committing. The per-resolution model is cost-efficient at high resolution rates and high ticket volumes; it can be expensive relative to flat-fee alternatives at mid-volumes.
The Australian data residency option requires the right tier. AU data hosting is not available on Suite Team or Suite Growth plans. You need Suite Professional (US$115/agent/month, ~AUD $161) or above. For a small team on a budget plan, the data residency option is locked behind a premium tier.
"Secondary Service Data" limitations. Zendesk's Regional Data Hosting Policy notes that certain secondary service data categories cannot be hosted in Australia. (unconfirmed): The specific scope of this limitation. Australian businesses with strict data residency requirements should review Zendesk's current Regional Data Hosting Policy documentation to understand exactly what is and is not covered by the AU data centre option.
Brand continuity risk. Ultimate.ai was an independent brand with its own customers and product direction. That brand and product are gone. Zendesk's product roadmap now determines the pace and direction of feature development. If Zendesk's priorities shift — and Zendesk has gone through significant ownership changes itself (taken private by private equity in 2022) — the Advanced AI Agents product roadmap shifts with them.
Australian fit
Zendesk has better Australian fit than most international customer service platforms — an Australian entity, a local presence, and a documented path to in-country data hosting. It does not, however, bill in Australian dollars. Its own Australian pricing page states: “Supported currency: currently, Zendesk supports USD, EUR, GBP and BRL.”
Data residency: Available on Suite Professional and Enterprise plans. This is a real, documented option — not a vague promise. The limitation on "secondary service data" requires verification, but the core data residency capability exists. For businesses that need it, this is significant.
Pricing in AUD: Zendesk's Australian pricing page (zendesk.com/au/pricing) publishes local pricing. GST treatment is standard for an AU-registered entity.
Local support: Australian entity, Sydney presence, AEST-hours support access. Meaningfully better than US-only vendors.
Privacy Act: Zendesk is a mature enterprise platform with standard DPA documentation and sub-processor disclosures. The AU data residency option, when properly activated, addresses the primary Privacy Act concern for most businesses. Regulated sectors (financial services, healthcare) should review the full DPA with legal counsel.
GST: Zendesk charges GST as standard on AU accounts. Include it in any budget calculation.
Alternatives
For Australian businesses evaluating Zendesk AI Agents (formerly Ultimate.ai):
- Zoho Desk (Zia AI) — two AU data centres (Sydney and Melbourne), AUD billing, AI features included in paid plans, and significantly cheaper per agent. The top pick in our customer service roundup for AU businesses prioritising local data and value.
- Freshdesk (Freddy AI) — Sydney office, competitive pricing, free tier available. Data residency is a gap at lower tiers, but a credible alternative for SMBs not yet at Zendesk's price point.
- Intercom Fin AI — per-resolution pricing similar to Zendesk AI Agents, but runs on Intercom's own platform. Relevant if you are not already a Zendesk customer and want a comparable AI-first helpdesk.

Bottom line
Ultimate.ai is gone. What remains is Zendesk AI Agents — a capable, well-supported AI automation layer that makes genuine sense for Australian businesses already committed to Zendesk's ecosystem.
For existing Zendesk customers, the Advanced AI Agents tier represents the most credible path to meaningful ticket automation, with the added benefit of real Australian data residency options at the Professional and Enterprise tiers. The per-resolution pricing requires careful modelling, but the unit economics are defensible at scale.
For businesses not yet on Zendesk, the question is whether the AI Agents capability is worth migrating your entire support infrastructure. In most cases, the answer is: evaluate Zendesk's full platform first. If Zendesk Suite makes sense for your business on its own merits, the AI Agents capability is a well-developed addition. If you are evaluating Zendesk AI Agents specifically because you want AI automation and your helpdesk happens to be Freshdesk or similar, the switching costs probably outweigh the gains.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Per-resolution pricing is logical but can escalate; Suite plans add meaningful base cost; AU data residency requires Premium tier |

Update history
- 9 Oct 2026 — Re-confirmed for the AUD-claim queue (#472), zendesk.com/au/pricing read in a browser on an Australian connection: Support Team US$19, Suite Team US$55, Suite Professional US$115 per agent a month paid yearly, Copilot add-on US$50 — the 24 September table — and Zendesk's own line "Supported currency: currently, Zendesk supports USD, EUR, GBP and BRL" restates the no-AUD finding. The per-resolution rates for the AI agents are not printed on the page and were not re-verified. Capture:
Dossiers/captures/ultimate-ai-pricing-2026-10-09.txt. - 24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 RE-CHECKED — the AUD-billing credit is false, and Zendesk says so on its own Australian page. 15/25 → 14/25. “Supported currency: currently, Zendesk supports USD, EUR, GBP and BRL.” AUD is not on the list, and this review credited “AUD billing” in the Australian Fit row and again in the Australian-fit section. Australian Fit 3/5 → 2/5 — the other two clauses, AU data residency at Professional+ and an Australian entity, are untouched, which is why it is 2 and not 1. ⚠ The plan list was third-party and half of it was wrong. The review says so itself — “all per-resolution and Suite plan figures above are from third-party pricing analyses”. Against the vendor's page today: Suite Team US$55 and Suite Professional US$115 are exactly right; Suite Growth US$89 is not a plan on the page at all; Suite Enterprise is “Talk to Sales”, not US$169; and the review omitted Support Team at US$19, the cheapest way in. Superseded figures kept visible per our price-history rule. ⚠ And a GST gross-up that this morning's sweep could not see: “~AUD $3.10 per automated resolution (pay-as-you-go, plus GST ~AUD $3.41)” — 3.10 × 1.10 — with the same on the committed-volume rate. It never says gross-up or 10%, so a sweep filtering on those words walked past it. Removed under our GST rule. ⚠ Also recorded: the page is titled “Starting from £19/month | Zendesk Australia” over a body reading US$ 19 — a reader trusting the tab title is wrong about the currency and the country at once.

Does Zendesk AI Agents have Australian data residency?
Yes, Zendesk offers Australian data hosting through its Data Center Location add-on. This is available on Suite Professional (approximately AUD $161/agent/month) and Suite Enterprise (approximately AUD $237/agent/month) plans. It is not available on Suite Team or Suite Growth plans. There are some limitations on 'secondary service data' — review Zendesk's Regional Data Hosting Policy for the full scope.
How much does Zendesk AI Agents cost in Australia?
Zendesk AI Agents pricing has two components: the Zendesk Suite base plan (from approximately AUD $77/agent/month for Suite Team) plus per-resolution charges for Advanced AI Agents (approximately AUD $2.33–$3.41 per automated resolution depending on volume commitment, including GST).
