The verdict: Msty is a polished, feature-rich desktop app that lets you run AI models entirely on your own hardware — no cloud subscription, no data leaving your machine. The free tier is genuinely useful, and the paid Aurum plan at US$149/year (~A$209) is solid value compared to stacking multiple AI subscriptions. The interface rewards power users but can overwhelm newcomers, and you need a reasonably modern Mac or PC to get good performance from local models. For Australians with real data privacy concerns — lawyers, accountants, health professionals, anyone handling client information — this is one of the most compelling options available. Score: 17/25 — Very Good.

What it is

Msty is a desktop application made by CloudStack, LLC, a US-based company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. It sits in a growing category of tools that let you download and run AI language models directly on your own computer, without sending any data to OpenAI, Google, or anyone else.

The pitch is simple: your prompts stay on your machine. When you run a local model through Msty, nothing is transmitted externally. No one trains on your conversations. No cloud server stores your queries.

That matters more than it used to. Australians in regulated industries — law, finance, healthcare, accounting — increasingly face questions about whether their AI tool of choice is compliant with privacy obligations. Using ChatGPT to draft a client brief is convenient until you remember that the data may be processed on overseas servers. Msty sidesteps that problem entirely for local models.

The app also supports cloud providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Grok, and others — but these connections are optional. You supply your own API keys, and the data flows according to each provider's terms, not Msty's. This hybrid approach means you can run sensitive client work locally and use a more powerful cloud model for lower-stakes tasks, all within the same interface.

As of June 2026, Msty Studio is at version 2.8.0 and supports macOS, Windows, and Linux.

What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

Msty uses USD pricing only. The table below converts at ×1.40 as a guide, not a quote. GST treatment is not stated on any Msty page. Msty sells its Aurum licences through LemonSqueezy, which operates as a merchant of record and handles sales-tax collection for the jurisdictions it covers — but neither Msty's pricing page nor its terms confirm that Australian GST is calculated and remitted at checkout, and LemonSqueezy's Australian GST coverage is not something we could verify on a primary source. Treat any AUD figure converted before GST and check the tax line at checkout before you buy.

Plan USD price Approx. AUD (ex-GST) Billing Notes
Free $0 A$0 Forever Core chat features, local + cloud models, Knowledge Stacks, Agent Mode
Aurum $149/user ~A$209/user Annually Adds web access, Azure/Bedrock providers, Forge Mode, Shadow Personas, Turnstiles, Insights
Aurum Lifetime $349/user ~A$489/user One-time All Aurum features, lifetime updates
Teams $300/user ~A$420/user Annually Min 5 users; adds SSO, team management, role-based access control, shared Knowledge Stacks

No AUD-native pricing. No GST-inclusive price is shown upfront, and GST treatment is not stated anywhere on Msty's site — so confirm the tax line at checkout. No monthly billing option; it is annual or lifetime only for paid plans.

The free tier is meaningfully functional. You can run local models, connect cloud providers via your own API keys, use Knowledge Stacks for RAG, and access Agent Mode — all at no cost. The paid tiers unlock power-user features like Turnstiles (workflow automation chains), Forge Mode (an integrated editor), and the web-based version of the app.

For context: if you are already paying for ChatGPT Plus (A$30/mo before GST) and Claude Pro (A$34/mo monthly, GST included), a lifetime Msty licence at ~A$541 pays for itself in under nine months while adding genuine privacy for local model work.

How it works

Download Msty Studio from msty.ai. Install it like any other Mac or Windows application — no Docker, no terminal commands, no developer setup required. This alone distinguishes it from competitors like LM Studio, which requires more technical comfort.

On first launch, you choose your starting point: set up Local AI (download a model to run on your hardware) or connect a cloud provider using an API key you already hold. You can do both.

Local models are downloaded through the built-in Model Hub, which integrates with Ollama and HuggingFace. You browse available models — ranging from compact 1–3 billion parameter models that run on modest hardware to 70 billion parameter models that require a high-end machine — and download them with a click. Models are stored locally. Nothing is sent externally when you chat with them.

Apple Silicon Macs (M1 onwards) get MLX-optimised inference, which means local models run noticeably faster on an M2 or M3 MacBook Pro than they do on an equivalent Windows laptop. This is a genuine advantage for Australian Mac users.

Cloud providers are connected by pasting in an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or others. Msty acts as the interface; the data flows directly from your machine to the provider. You are not routing data through Msty's servers.

What it does well

Split chat is genuinely useful. Run the same prompt through two or three different models side by side and compare the responses in real time. If you are evaluating whether Claude or GPT-4o handles legal drafting better for your needs, you can test them together rather than copy-pasting between browser tabs.

Knowledge Stacks are accessible. Most RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) implementations require technical setup. Msty makes it drag-and-drop. Drop in a PDF, point it at a folder, or add a YouTube transcript, and the AI will answer questions grounded in that source material. A Melbourne accountant could load the latest ATO guidelines and query them directly — locally, privately.

Vapor Chat solves a real problem. Activate it with Ctrl+Shift+N and you get a conversation that leaves no record unless you explicitly save it. For sensitive queries you do not want sitting in your chat history, this is a thoughtful feature.

Agent Mode handles multi-step tasks. Tell Msty to research a topic, summarise findings, draft a document, and check it against a knowledge stack — it will work through these steps sequentially. The 2.6.0 release in March 2026 made this substantially more capable.

Crew Conversations are clever. You can run multiple AI personas in a single thread — one playing devil's advocate, one drafting, one fact-checking — and have them collaborate on a response. This is niche, but for business owners who want structured AI-assisted brainstorming, it is genuinely different from anything the mainstream tools offer.

The free tier is honest. Many AI apps offer free tiers that are barely functional. Msty's free tier includes local model support, cloud API connections, Knowledge Stacks, and Agent Mode. You can run a meaningful workflow without paying anything beyond your API costs.

Where it falls short

Hardware requirements are real and non-trivial. To run a capable local model at useful speed, you need at minimum 16 GB of RAM, and 32 GB is better. A 7-billion parameter model on an M2 MacBook Pro with 16 GB of RAM is fast and practical. The same model on a Windows laptop with 8 GB of RAM will be slow enough to frustrate. Msty is not at fault for this — it is the nature of running AI locally — but it is a hard prerequisite that rules out a significant proportion of Australian small business owners who have modest hardware.

No mobile app. Msty Studio is desktop-only. If you want to query your local models from your phone, you cannot. The Aurum tier adds a web version, but that accesses cloud providers only — local models are tied to the desktop.

The interface rewards patience. For a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner picking this up for the first time, the feature density can feel overwhelming. Turnstiles, Forge Mode, Shadow Personas, Crew Conversations, Live Contexts — understanding what each does and when to use it takes meaningful time. The UI has improved significantly in recent releases, but it is still a tool that asks something of you.

Aurum-gating of key workflow features. Turnstiles (automation chains), Forge Mode, and unlimited Knowledge Stacks are locked behind the paid Aurum tier. The free tier is genuinely useful, but if you want to build repeatable workflows, you need to pay. That is fair — the pricing is reasonable — but the free experience understates what the app can really do.

Cloud model data still leaves Australia. When you connect OpenAI or Anthropic through Msty and query those models, your data goes to their servers in the US (or wherever they host). Msty is transparent about this, but it is important to understand: Msty provides a privacy wrapper for local models only. Using cloud APIs through Msty is no more private than using ChatGPT.com directly.

No Australian support. CloudStack is a US company. Support is via standard channels with no Australian presence, no AU-specific documentation, and response times are US-timezone oriented.

Australian fit

Msty's core value proposition — keep your data on your device — is directly relevant to Australia's privacy regulatory environment. The Privacy Act 1988 places obligations on many Australian businesses regarding how they handle personal information. Running AI locally is one concrete way to avoid routing client data through overseas servers.

AUD pricing: None. All pricing is USD. You will pay in USD and your bank will apply its own exchange rate. Budget approximately A$209/year for Aurum as a guide, though the actual AUD amount — and whether GST is added — will only be clear at checkout.

Data residency: Local models — your data stays on your machine. Full stop. Cloud model API calls — your data goes to the provider's servers, wherever those are hosted. Msty does not have Australian-region hosting of any kind.

GST: Unconfirmed. Msty sells through LemonSqueezy as merchant of record, but no Msty page states that Australian GST is calculated, collected, and remitted at checkout, and we could not confirm LemonSqueezy's Australian GST coverage on a primary source. Check the tax line at the point of purchase.

Australian support: None dedicated. US company, no AU office, no AU-based support staff.

AU-aware outputs: Msty is a model-agnostic interface — the "Australian awareness" of any response depends entirely on which model you choose and how you prompt it. There is no built-in Australian context. You would need to add ATO guidelines, Australian legal frameworks, or AU-specific content through Knowledge Stacks yourself.

Apple Silicon optimisation: A genuine AU-relevant advantage. Australia has strong MacBook penetration among small business professionals, and the MLX optimisation for M1/M2/M3 chips means local model performance is meaningfully better on the hardware many Australian users already own.

Au Fit score: 2/5. No AUD pricing, no AU region, no AU support, no AU-aware defaults. The privacy benefit is real and relevant, but the tool does nothing specifically for Australia.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 4/5 Free tier is genuinely functional; Aurum at ~A$209/year is fair given what you get; Lifetime at ~A$541 is excellent value long-term
Ease of Use 3/5 One-click install and a capable free tier lower the barrier to entry, but the interface is dense and the learning curve to unlock full value is real
Feature Depth 5/5 Split chat, Knowledge Stacks, Agent Mode, Crew Conversations, Vapor Chat, Turnstiles, MCP integration, media generation — this is one of the deepest feature sets in the local AI category
Australian Fit 2/5 Privacy benefit is real and AU-relevant; Apple Silicon optimisation helps Mac users; but no AUD pricing, no AU region, no AU support, no AU-specific defaults
Reliability & Support 3/5 Active development (2.8.0 released June 2026), solid changelog cadence, but support is US-based with no AU presence; local model reliability is hardware-dependent

Total: 17/25 — ★★★★ Very Good

Australian Fit gate: Australian Fit score is 2/5, below the gate threshold of 4/5. The displayed star rating is capped at four stars regardless of the raw total. To earn five stars in this publication, a tool must be excellent for Australians — see our methodology.

Bottom line

If you handle sensitive client information — you are a solicitor, accountant, financial adviser, or healthcare professional — Msty's local model support is worth taking seriously. Running AI queries locally rather than through overseas cloud servers is a meaningful step toward privacy compliance. The free tier lets you test this without spending anything.

If you are a Mac user with Apple Silicon — an M1, M2, or M3 chip — local model performance in Msty is genuinely good. Draft summaries, query documents, and run structured tasks without an internet connection. At ~A$209/year for Aurum, the cost is easily justified if you use it daily.

If you want to compare AI models — Msty's split chat lets you run the same prompt through GPT-4o and Claude and Llama simultaneously and compare the outputs. No other mainstream tool makes this as easy. If you are deciding which model to commit to, Msty is the fastest way to find out.

If you are a non-technical user who wants a simple AI chat experience — stick with ChatGPT or Claude's web interfaces. Msty rewards users who are willing to invest time in configuration and learning. The payoff is significant, but it requires more than five minutes.

If you have modest hardware — a Windows laptop with 8 GB of RAM, or a Mac older than 2021 — the local model experience will disappoint. Cloud provider connections through Msty are an alternative, but that removes the core privacy advantage.

  • 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed. reviewed: untouched per our dating rule.
