JetBrains Junie Review Australia 2026: Worth the Credit Burn?

The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictVerdict (TL;DR): Junie is the most natural agentic coding tool for anyone already living inside IntelliJ, PyCharm or WebStorm. It plans, edits and runs multi-file changes without you leaving the editor. But it is metered in US-dollar credits that vanish faster than you expect, and your code is processed through EU servers and overseas model providers — there is no Australian data option. A strong tool with a weak local fit. Buy it for the capability, not the billing.

What it is
Junie is JetBrains' AI coding agent. It lives inside the JetBrains IDEs — the same IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm that millions of developers already pay for. You describe a task in plain English. Junie reads your project, writes a plan, edits the files, runs the code and reports back.
It is not a chat sidebar. JetBrains ships a separate AI Assistant for chat and completion. Junie is the agent — the thing that does the work across several files while you watch.
JetBrains launched Junie alongside a free AI tier in April 2025, and confirmed compatibility with IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Pro, WebStorm and GoLand at launch, with PhpStorm, RustRover and RubyMine to follow (source: JetBrains launch blog, 16 April 2025, Wayback 16 Apr 2025 (Wayback 16 April 2025)).
If you do not already use a JetBrains IDE, Junie is not a reason to switch. It assumes you are inside the editor. For the JetBrains faithful, it is the most integrated agent on the market.
Pricing in AUD
Junie does not have its own price. It is bundled into the JetBrains AI plans, which run on a credit system. One AI Credit equals one US dollar of model usage, charged in your local currency (source: JetBrains AI quota blog, Aug 2025, Wayback 28 Jun 2026 (Wayback 28 June 2026)).
The plans, from the official pricing page (jetbrains.com/ai-ides/buy, Wayback 28 Jun 2026 (Wayback 28 June 2026)):
| Plan | Price (USD/mo) | Approx AUD/mo | Monthly AI Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Free | $0 | $0 | 3 credits / 30 days |
| AI Pro | $10 | ~$14.00 | 10 credits |
| AI Ultimate | $30 | ~$42.00 | 35 credits (USD 5 bonus) |
| AI Enterprise | $60 / user | ~$84 / user | Quota on par with Ultimate or higher |
AUD figures are converted at roughly 1.40 USD and are indicative only — JetBrains bills in US dollars, so your card statement moves with the exchange rate. Expect GST to be added or absorbed depending on how JetBrains treats your Australian billing details; the listed prices are USD ex-any local tax.
Here is the catch, and it is the one Australians need to read twice. The credits are consumed at live model rates. A handful of agentic Junie runs on a frontier model can eat several dollars of credit in a session. JetBrains itself reframed the model as "you only pay for what you consume." On the AI Free tier's 3 credits a month, Junie is a taster, not a tool. AI Pro's 10 credits will not last a working week of real agent use. Heavy users land on AI Ultimate or burn through top-ups.
The free tier does include credit-based access to Junie, plus unlimited local code completion — useful, but the cloud agent is rationed (source: JetBrains launch blog (Wayback 16 April 2025)).
Australian fit
This is where Junie struggles, and where the gate matters.
Billing is US-dollar-native. There is no AUD price. Credits are denominated in USD and charged in your local currency at conversion. Your monthly cost is exposed to the exchange rate, which makes budgeting for an Australian team harder than a flat AUD subscription. For a sole operator that is an annoyance; for a finance manager signing off a team plan, it is a real forecasting headache.
Data leaves Australia. JetBrains is an EU company, and JetBrains AI servers sit in the European Union. Data sent to Junie is then passed to third-party model providers, some of which run data centres in the United States (source: JetBrains data-residency knowledge base, Wayback 28 Jun 2026 (Wayback 28 June 2026)). There is no Australian data-residency option. For most app developers that is acceptable. For anyone working under Australian government, health or financial data-handling obligations, it is a question to clear with your own compliance people first.
There is a genuine privacy floor underneath this. JetBrains, as an EU processor, applies GDPR, names its sub-processors, and states that it does not use detailed code data from commercial users for training without explicit, company-level consent (source: JetBrains Privacy Notice, Wayback 20 Jun 2026 (Wayback 20 June 2026)). That GDPR posture is better than a US-only vendor with vague terms. But GDPR is European law, not Australian, and "stored in the EU, processed partly in the US" is not the same as "stays in Australia."
Support is global, not local. JetBrains support is documentation-led and ticket-based, on northern-hemisphere hours. There is no Australian phone line or AU-timezone desk. For a developer that is fine. It is still not an Australian-first experience.
The verdict on local fit: Junie does not punish Australians, but it does not consider them either. AUD pricing, AU data residency and AU support are all absent.
Where it's strong
It is genuinely inside your IDE. Most coding agents ask you to leave your editor or trust a separate tool. Junie does not. It reads your real project, with full context, and edits in place. For a JetBrains user the friction is close to zero.
The agent does real multi-step work. Describe a refactor across several files, and Junie plans it, makes the edits, runs the tests and tells you what it did. This is the agentic loop done properly, not a glorified autocomplete.
Model choice is built in. Junie runs across multiple frontier models rather than locking you to one. That keeps it competitive as the underlying models improve, without you changing tools.
The free tier is real. Unlimited local completion plus a small Junie allowance, bundled into IDE licences from the 2025.1 release, means you can try the agent before paying. Few competitors give you the agent for nothing at all.
Where it's weak
The credit meter is the headline weakness. Costs are unpredictable. The same task can cost wildly different amounts depending on the model and how much the agent chews through. JetBrains' own community forums carry complaints about credit consumption, and the company has openly said it is still "rethinking the AI quota model." A pricing model the vendor is still rewriting is not one you can plan a year around.
The quota model is in flux. JetBrains has changed how AI credits work more than once, and could not confirm the exact credit allocation for the Enterprise tier at the time of writing. That uncertainty makes a multi-seat purchase a moving target.
No Australian data path. Covered above — for regulated Australian work, this is a hard blocker until you clear it internally.
It is JetBrains-only. If your team is on VS Code or another editor, Junie is not for you. The tool's greatest strength — deep IDE integration — is also its cage.
The 5×5 score
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3 / 5 | Capable, but USD credits burn fast and unpredictably. The free and Pro tiers run dry quickly under real agent use. |
| Ease of Use | 4 / 5 | For an existing JetBrains user, near-zero friction. The agent lives where you already work. |
| Feature Depth | 4 / 5 | Real multi-file agentic coding, multiple models, plan-edit-run loop. Genuine depth, not autocomplete. |
| Australian Fit | 2 / 5 | No AUD pricing, EU/US data residency with no AU option, no AU-timezone support. GDPR posture helps, but it isn't local. |
| Reliability & Support | 3 / 5 | Solid JetBrains engineering and docs, but a credit model the vendor is still rewriting and documented billing complaints. |
| Total | 16 / 25 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |
The components sum to 16. Australian Fit sits at 2/5, so under our methodology Junie cannot be named a category Top Pick and could not wear five stars regardless of total — the local-fit gate is the reason, and it is the honest one.
Verdict
Junie is a very good coding agent trapped in a billing model that does Australians no favours. If you already build in a JetBrains IDE, it is the most natural agent you can install — it reads your project, does the work, and gets out of the way. The capability is real and the free tier lets you prove it to yourself before paying a cent.
But go in clear-eyed. The credits are priced in US dollars, they disappear faster than the plan headline suggests, and your code is processed in the EU and overseas with no Australian data option. For an indie developer or a startup shipping a consumer app, none of that is fatal. For a Melbourne firm handling regulated client data, the data-residency question has to be answered before, not after, you switch it on.
Recommended for JetBrains users who want a real agent and can stomach a metered, US-dollar bill. Everyone else — especially anyone with Australian data-handling obligations — should weigh the local-fit cost with eyes open.
