The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Verdict (TL;DR): IRONSCALES is one of the few "AI email security" tools where the AI label is earned, not marketing. It bolts onto Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace through an API in minutes, learns how your people actually email, and catches the targeted phishing, BEC and account-takeover attacks that slip past your inbox's built-in filtering. For an Australian small business whose single biggest cyber risk is a convincing fake email, it's a serious upgrade. The catches: pricing is quote-only with no published AUD figure, and IRONSCALES does not document Australian data residency — your email metadata is processed offshore. Treat it as a strong layer over your defences, not a whole defence, and get the residency answer in writing before you sign.

Score: 18/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Australian Fit: 2/5 — five-star and Top Pick gates do not apply at this score.

Last reviewed: 7 June 2026 by Adam.

A note on what this review is. This is editorial guidance to help an Australian business shortlist tools — not security advice for your specific environment. No single product delivers cyber resilience on its own, and email security complements but does not replace the broader controls below or a competent managed IT or security provider. For anything touching your obligations under the Privacy Act or the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, talk to a qualified professional.

What IRONSCALES is

IRONSCALES is an AI-driven email security platform that sits on top of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. It connects through the provider's API — no MX record changes, no mail-flow rerouting, no software agents on staff devices. Because of that, every email it inspects has already passed your inbox provider's own spam and malware checks. Its job is to catch what gets through: the targeted, socially engineered attacks that ordinary filtering misses.

It does three things. First, it detects and automatically removes malicious email — phishing, spear phishing, business email compromise (BEC), account takeover (ATO), malicious links, QR-code attacks, deepfake and GenAI-crafted messages. Second, it runs phishing simulations and security awareness training so your staff learn to spot the real thing. Third, it automates the clean-up through an agentic assistant called Themis, which classifies, clusters and remediates threats across every mailbox at once.

The company was founded in 2014 by alumni of an Israeli military intelligence unit, is now headquartered in Atlanta with offices in Tel Aviv and the UK, and says it protects more than 17,000 organisations worldwide. It is sold in Australia through distributors such as Pax8 rather than a local IRONSCALES office.

Why this matters for Australian SMBs

Email is the front door for most attacks on small business. Phishing and BEC are how the malware, credential theft and invoice fraud actually arrive. The Australian Cyber Security Centre's Essential Eight — the country's baseline set of mitigations — does not contain an explicit "email security" control. But email is the delivery vector for several of the threats the Essential Eight is designed to blunt: malicious macros, untrusted applications, and the credential theft that makes multi-factor authentication and patching matter in the first place.

So be precise about where IRONSCALES fits. It does not implement any of the formal eight, and buying it does not move you up a Maturity Level. What it does is harden the channel those attacks travel through, and its awareness-training module addresses the human weakness no technical control fully covers. Think of it as a complementary layer that strengthens the #1 attack vector — sitting alongside the Essential Eight, not inside it. That is a genuinely useful place to spend money, provided you have not skipped the basics it sits on top of.

What it costs in Australia

This is still the weakest part of the buying experience, but it is no longer a complete blank. The three business tiers — Email Essentials, Email Protect and Email Protect 360 — every one of them carries a "Request a Quote" button and no visible price. There is a free trial, but no permanent free tier.

What is published sits in the page's own structured data rather than on the cards, where a buyer will never see it. IRONSCALES declares per-mailbox prices in US dollars there, and they are the vendor's own numbers, not a third party's (verified in the browser 21 September 2026):

Plan Vendor price (USD, per mailbox/month) Annual billing Approx AUD at 1.4045 What it adds
Email Essentials US$3.89 US$3.11 ≈ A$5.46 per mailbox/month, or A$4.37 on annual billing Agentic-AI phishing, BEC and VIP impersonation detection; basic spam and URL scanning; M365 / Google Workspace in minutes
Email Protect US$5.49 US$4.39 ≈ A$7.71 per mailbox/month, or A$6.17 on annual billing Adaptive AI, multi-engine link and attachment scanning, customisable autonomous remediation
Email Protect 360 US$7.29 US$5.83 ≈ A$10.24 per mailbox/month, or A$8.19 on annual billing Adds email encryption and data loss prevention, inbound and outbound

One honest caveat on that table: the vendor's structured data still labels these three prices with the previous tier names (Protect, Email Protect, Complete Protect) while the visible cards use the new ones. They are matched in tier order above. Treat them as a firm ballpark rather than a quote until sales confirms your number. A managed route via the Atera platform lists IRONSCALES at roughly US$4/mailbox/month (per Atera's support FAQ, Apr 2026 — indicative, not a vendor quote). A standalone Security Awareness Training suite is offered as a separate add-on.

There is no published AUD pricing at all — not a figure, not a currency switch. Every price above is US dollars converted at USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and shown ex-GST; a GST-registered business that gives IRONSCALES its ABN is not charged GST on the import. As a rough guide, a 25-mailbox business on the middle tier is in the order of A$2,300 a year paid monthly, or A$1,850 on annual billing — but only a sales quote will tell you the real figure in your currency.

GST note: IRONSCALES is an overseas merchant and publishes no Australia-specific GST statement. As general guidance, GST applies to digital services sold to Australian customers under the imported-services rules, so expect 10% on top of (or built into) the quoted price. A GST-registered business buying for business use can usually claim the credit. Confirm the GST treatment and deductibility with your accountant — this is general information, not tax advice.

How it works in practice

Setup is the standout. IRONSCALES markets a "3-click" install: you authorise it against Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace through the API, and it begins working without touching your mail routing. There is no mail-flow cutover to schedule and no MX record to change, which is exactly the kind of low-risk install a small business without a dedicated IT team needs.

Once connected, the AI spends its first period learning. It builds a behavioural baseline and a "social graph" for every user — who they normally email, how they write, what normal looks like — using natural-language processing and understanding to read context and intent. From then on it flags the anomalies: the supplier whose bank details suddenly changed, the "CEO" asking for gift cards, the login from an unfamiliar pattern. Specialised machine-learning models handle sender-relationship analysis, keyword and entity reputation, and even computer-vision checks on images and QR codes.

When something malicious is found, Themis — the platform's agentic "virtual SOC analyst" — classifies it, finds every variant across all inboxes (even with different subject lines or senders) and removes them, with the level of autonomy you choose, from fully hands-free to analyst-in-the-loop. For a business with no security team, that cluster-and-remove behaviour is the real labour saving: one nasty email caught means every copy of it pulled, automatically.

The training side runs in parallel. You can send GPT-powered simulated phishing emails to staff, see who clicks, and assign awareness modules to the people most at risk.

What it does well

  • The AI is real, not a label. Behavioural baselining, NLP/NLU intent analysis, sender-relationship and computer-vision models, and an agentic remediation layer — this is a genuinely AI-led detection stack, not a rules engine with "AI" stuck on the box.
  • Near-painless install. API integration with no MX changes and no agents means you can trial it without re-plumbing your email.
  • It targets the threats filters miss. It works at the inbox level on what already got past Microsoft or Google — the targeted BEC, impersonation and account-takeover attacks that do the real financial damage to SMBs.
  • Detection and training in one platform. Phishing simulation plus awareness training sits beside the detection engine, so the human layer and the technical layer are managed together.
  • Credible security posture. ISO 27001 certified and SOC 2 Type 2, with GDPR alignment stated.

What it doesn't do well

  • No transparent pricing — and no AUD at all. Every visible tier is a “Request a Quote” button; the only per-mailbox figures the vendor publishes are buried in the page's structured data where no buyer will find them, and they are US dollars. For a small Australian business comparing options on a budget, that opacity is a real friction, and there is no AUD price anywhere to compare against.
  • No Australian data residency. IRONSCALES' Trust Center lists certifications but says nothing about where customer data is stored. Its 2025 APAC data-centre expansion added regions in India and the UAE — not Australia. There is no onshore Australian option, and the privacy policy confirms cross-border transfers within the IRONSCALES group. So your email metadata is processed offshore. Confirm the storage region in writing before any business handling sensitive data signs.
  • No permanent free tier. A trial only — there is no zero-cost way to keep running it on a small mailbox count once the trial ends.
  • It's a layer, not a defence. It hardens one vector — email. It does nothing for patching, application control, backups, MFA configuration or the rest of the Essential Eight. Buying it and stopping there leaves most of your attack surface untouched.
  • No documented Australian support hours or local presence. Support is global and 24/7 by the company's account, but there is no published AU phone line, AU business-hours commitment, or local office. AU buyers will likely go through a distributor partner for local help.

Australian fit

This is where an otherwise strong product loses ground for our market.

Data residency and privacy. This is the decisive question for any Australian business weighing an email security tool, because the tool by design reads message content and metadata. IRONSCALES does not store Australian data onshore. Its Trust Center documents ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR and Privacy Shield, but is silent on data-storage location. When IRONSCALES expanded its APAC data-centre footprint in 2025 it added regions in India and the UAE — not Australia. The privacy policy confirms data is transferred across borders within the IRONSCALES group with no residency commitment. For a business with Privacy Act obligations or a contractual onshore requirement, this is a problem you must resolve directly with IRONSCALES before signing — confirm in writing which region holds your data. This is the main reason Australian Fit sits low.

AUD pricing and GST. There is no AUD pricing on the vendor site, and no Australia-specific GST statement. Expect to transact in USD via a quote, with 10% GST applying under the imported-services rules and a credit usually available to GST-registered businesses. Confirm both with your accountant.

AU availability and support. IRONSCALES is available to Australian businesses, sold through distributors including Pax8. There is no local IRONSCALES office and no documented AU-hours support line; expect global 24/7 support and, in practice, a local partner for hands-on help.

AU context in the product. The detection engine is language- and behaviour-driven, so it works on Australian email patterns without needing local tuning. But there is nothing Australia-specific built in — no AU compliance reporting, no local threat-intelligence angle.

The caveat that matters most: no email security tool, IRONSCALES included, makes you Essential Eight compliant or fulfils your Privacy Act duties on its own. It is one layer. Pair it with the formal mitigations and competent IT or security support.

Australian Fit score: 2/5.

Alternatives

  • Microsoft Defender for Office 365 — if you already pay for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, you have a capable built-in email defence. Consider this first if budget is tight; IRONSCALES is the upgrade for what Defender misses, not a replacement for it.
  • Mimecast — a long-established email security gateway with an Australian data centre option and local presence. Consider this if onshore data residency is non-negotiable. (Review forthcoming.)
  • Proofpoint — enterprise-grade email protection with strong reporting. Consider this if you're a larger AU organisation that needs depth and has the budget and IT capacity to run it. (Review forthcoming.)

Bottom line

IRONSCALES is a genuinely good product fighting the right battle. For an Australian small business, the email inbox is the single most exploited entry point, and IRONSCALES adds a real, AI-led layer of defence over it — one that installs in minutes, learns your people, catches the targeted attacks your inbox filter misses, and trains your staff to spot the rest. The technology is the real thing, and the security credentials are solid.

What holds it back for our market is not the engineering — it's the buying experience and the silence on data. Quote-only pricing with no AUD figure makes it hard for a budget-conscious SMB to even compare, and the absence of any documented Australian data residency is a genuine gap for a tool that reads your email. Neither is a deal-breaker on its own, but both demand answers before you commit, and both are exactly the things an Australian-first vendor would have nailed down.

Our recommendation: if phishing and BEC are your live risk — and for most Australian SMBs they are — put IRONSCALES on the shortlist and use the free trial. But go in with two questions for the sales rep: what's the all-in AUD price including GST for my mailbox count, and where is my data stored? Get both in writing. And remember it's a layer over the Essential Eight, never a substitute for it. At 18/25 it's a strong "Very Good" — the local-fit gaps, not the product, are what keep it off five stars.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 Capable platform at a defensible US$3.89–US$7.29 per mailbox, but the figures are only in the page's structured data, every visible tier is quote-only, there is no AUD price and no permanent free tier — value is still hard to judge before a sales call
Ease of Use 4/5 3-click API install, no MX changes, no agents — genuinely low-friction for a non-technical SMB
Feature Depth 5/5 Real AI detection stack across phishing, BEC, ATO, QR, deepfake and GenAI threats, plus Themis agentic remediation and built-in simulation + training
Australian Fit 2/5 No AUD pricing, no documented onshore data residency, no local office or AU support hours; available only via distributors
Reliability & Support 4/5 ISO 27001 + SOC 2 Type 2, 17,000+ organisations, global 24/7 support — strong, short of 5 only for the lack of an AU-hours channel
Total 18/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good

Australian Fit gate: the ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and Top Pick gates require Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. At 18/25 with AU Fit 2/5, this review sits below the five-star threshold regardless, so the gate does not bind — but the low AU Fit is the headline caveat for local buyers. See our Methodology.

Update history
  • 21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser — and the pricing section was wrong twice over. Read live on an Australian connection at ironscales.com/pricing. Currency: USD, confirmed explicitly — ten "priceCurrency": "USD" declarations in the page's own structured data and no AUD or A$ anywhere in the markup. aud_native: false set explicitly. Two corrections follow. First, IRONSCALES does publish per-mailbox prices — not on the visible cards, which still all read “Request a Quote”, but in the vendor's own JSON-LD on that page: US$3.89 / US$5.49 / US$7.29 per mailbox per month, or US$3.11 / US$4.39 / US$5.83 on annual billing. That is a vendor figure, so it replaces the TrustRadius and Atera third-party estimates this review had been carrying — and it shows those estimates were high, TrustRadius quoting US$6.00 and US$8.33 where the vendor's own data says US$5.49 and US$7.29. Second, the tier names have changed: the visible cards now read Email Essentials · Email Protect · Email Protect 360, where this review had Protect · Email Protect · Complete Protect. The structured data still carries the old names, so the two halves of the vendor's own page disagree; the visible names are used here and the prices are matched to them in tier order, with that caveat stated in the table. No score change: the prices are still USD, still invisible to a buyer without a sales call, and there is still no AUD anywhere — which is what Value for Money 3/5 and Australian Fit 2/5 were resting on. Frequently asked questions

Is IRONSCALES available in Australia?

Yes. It's sold to Australian businesses through distributors such as Pax8, rather than a local IRONSCALES office. There's no AU-hours support line, so expect global 24/7 support and a local partner for hands-on help.

Does IRONSCALES charge in AUD?

No. Verified in a browser on 21 September 2026: there is no AUD price anywhere on the pricing page, and the only per-mailbox figures IRONSCALES publishes — US$3.89, US$5.49 and US$7.29 a month, in its own structured data rather than on the visible cards — are declared in US dollars. You'll transact in USD via a sales quote, with GST expected to apply under the imported-services rules. Get the all-in AUD price in writing.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

There's a free trial but no permanent free tier. Once the trial ends, there's no zero-cost way to keep running it.

Where is my data stored?

Not in Australia. IRONSCALES documents no onshore data residency, and its 2025 APAC expansion added regions in India and the UAE, not Australia. For a tool that reads your email, confirm the storage region in writing before signing.
