Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): Formula Bot is a competent AI formula assistant that translates plain-English requests into spreadsheet formulas, SQL queries, and basic data analysis. It handles common formula tasks quickly and the free tier is enough to evaluate whether it's worth paying for. But AI-generated formulas can be subtly wrong — especially on nested logic or business-specific edge cases — and you should verify every output before it goes near a live financial report or compliance document. Your data is sent to OpenAI and processed in the United States. For Australian small business owners who spend time wrestling with VLOOKUP or SUMIFS, it's a useful time-saver with appropriate caution baked in.

What Formula Bot is

Formula Bot is an AI-powered formula and data analysis tool built for Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. You describe what you want to do in plain English — "calculate the percentage change between column B and column C, ignoring blank cells" — and it returns the formula, explains what it does, and gives you a copy-paste version ready to drop into your spreadsheet.

Beyond formula generation, Formula Bot has expanded into broader data analysis: you can upload a spreadsheet, ask questions about the data, generate charts, and automate repetitive tasks. The tool works both as a standalone web app and as an add-in for Excel and Google Sheets.

The company is US-based. Formula Bot is available globally and marketed as a general productivity tool with no country-specific tier. No Australian entity or data residency.

What it costs in Australia

Formula Bot is priced in USD. No AUD billing. All prices converted at approximately AUD 1.40 per USD ex-GST, as applies to digital services sold to Australian consumers.

Plan USD/month AUD approx. (ex-GST) Key limits
Free $0 Free 10 messages/month, 25 AI Actions/month
Starter $18/month ~AUD $25/month ex-GST 250 messages/month, 100 tool credits, files up to 50MB
Pro / Max $29/seat/month ~AUD $41/seat/month ex-GST Higher limits, team workspace, data connectors, playbooks
Enterprise $149/seat/month ~AUD $209/seat/month inc. GST Unlimited usage, SSO, dedicated support (estimate)

Annual billing reduces costs — check formulabot.com/pricing for current rates before subscribing.

Free tier: 10 messages and 25 AI Actions per month. This is genuinely usable for occasional formula help, though heavy users will hit the ceiling quickly. The add-in for Excel and Google Sheets is accessible on the free plan.

How it works in practice

The primary use case is simple: you type what you want your formula to do, and Formula Bot writes it. "Give me a formula that sums column D only where column A says 'Sydney'" returns =SUMIF (A:A,"Sydney",D:D) with an explanation of each argument.

For standard formulas — SUMIF, VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, COUNTIFS, basic date calculations — this works reliably and fast. It will also generate VBA macros for Excel, Google Apps Script for Sheets, and SQL queries if you paste in a table schema.

The data analysis side is more recent. You upload a CSV or Excel file, ask questions in a chat interface, and the tool generates charts, calculates summaries, and provides written commentary. For clean, well-structured datasets, this produces useful results in seconds.

Where it breaks down:

  • Complex nested formulas with multiple conditions across non-contiguous ranges
  • Business-specific logic that requires understanding your data model, not just your syntax
  • Edge cases where the AI interprets your prompt ambiguously and generates a formula that looks correct but handles exceptions incorrectly

The tool's documentation acknowledges this directly: human review is recommended before using generated formulas in compliance-sensitive reports. That is honest, but it's also a real limitation that should inform how much you rely on it.

What it does well

It handles the common cases well. SUMIF, VLOOKUP equivalents, conditional formatting rules, basic pivot logic — Formula Bot gets these right the vast majority of the time. For the formulas that take most people the longest to remember, it delivers in seconds.

Explanations are genuinely helpful. The tool doesn't just output a formula — it explains what each argument does. For someone learning Excel, this has real educational value.

SQL and script generation extend the value. If you also work with SQL databases or want to automate repetitive Sheets tasks with Apps Script, the same tool covers those use cases. That's meaningful breadth for a single subscription.

The free tier is enough to test properly. Ten messages a month is modest, but it's enough to run ten real formula requests and judge the output quality before committing to a paid plan.

Data is stored on AWS. Formula Bot stores user data on Amazon Web Services infrastructure [per Formula Bot's published security documentation]. It is not an entirely opaque black box.

What it doesn't do well

AI formulas can be subtly wrong. This is the most important limitation and it applies across every AI formula tool, not just Formula Bot. The tool can generate a formula that looks correct, passes a quick visual check, and still handles an edge case incorrectly — a blank cell, a text value in a numeric column, a date formatted inconsistently. In a spreadsheet feeding a financial report or tax calculation, one wrong formula is a meaningful risk. Never push an AI-generated formula to production without testing it against your actual data, including edge cases.

Complex nested logic is unreliable. The more conditions and exceptions you add to a formula request, the more likely Formula Bot is to miss one. For multi-condition, multi-range logic, experienced Excel users will often still write the formula faster themselves.

Usage caps are tight on lower tiers. Ten free messages a month is not much. The Starter plan's 250 messages should cover moderate use, but a heavy user working on a large spreadsheet project will feel the ceiling.

Your data goes to OpenAI. Formula Bot shares files and prompts with OpenAI for processing [per Formula Bot's published privacy documentation]. OpenAI processes data on US servers. Your uploaded spreadsheet data leaves Australia. This is a real consideration for anyone working with client data, personal information, or commercially sensitive figures.

No Australian billing or support. Pricing is USD-only, no AUD invoicing, no AU-specific support. Tax invoices may not reflect GST correctly by default — check with your accountant.

Australian fit

Formula Bot is a US product with no local presence or Australian data residency. The free tier is functional and the Starter plan at AUD ~$31/month is a reasonable price for a tool that saves meaningful spreadsheet time.

The data privacy situation is material. Formula Bot's published documentation states that files and inputs are shared with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google for processing, with agreements in place prohibiting use of that data for model training. Processing occurs on US servers. For Australian users, this means:

  • Data governed by the Privacy Act 1988 (customer personal information, health data) should not be uploaded
  • Client-confidential financial data warrants careful consideration before use
  • Non-sensitive business data (product catalogues, internal planning spreadsheets with no personal data) carries lower risk

The tool does not appear to have documented compliance against the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) in any publicly accessible form (unconfirmed).

For small business owners building budget models, analysing marketing data, or handling product inventories — where the data is yours and non-sensitive — Formula Bot is a practical daily tool. For anything touching client data, proceed with caution.

Australian Fit score: 2/5 — USD pricing, data processed offshore, no AU residency, no local compliance documentation.

Alternatives

  • Julius AI — conversational data analysis from uploaded files. Goes further than formula generation; better for exploring and querying your data.
  • Hex — collaborative data notebook for teams with more technical requirements. Stronger for structured SQL-based analysis.
  • Rows — a full AI-native spreadsheet with built-in data connections and automation, rather than an add-on to your existing tool.

Bottom line

Formula Bot does what it says — it writes formulas faster than you can. For everyday Excel and Sheets tasks, it reduces friction genuinely. The free tier is honest, the paid tiers are reasonably priced in USD terms, and the explanation feature adds real learning value.

The honest caveat: AI-generated formulas need verification. Every time. A formula that looks right can still be wrong in ways that don't surface until you look at an edge case. Build that review step into your workflow before you treat any output as reliable.

At AUD ~$31/month for the Starter plan, it earns its subscription if it saves you 20 minutes a week on formula writing. Just don't send it your client's payroll data.

  • 21 Sep 2026 — ⚠️ Formula Bot is now Better Analyst, and every paid price in the table below has changed. A citation-rot sweep found formulabot.com/docs/subscription-plan-limits returning HTTP 404. The reason is bigger than the page: formulabot.com now redirects wholesale to betteranalyst.com, whose own page title reads “Better Analyst (formerly Formula Bot)”. This is a rebrand, not a page move — the same shape as the Thriday and Continue findings. The dead docs page has no successor at the new domain; its content now sits in betteranalyst.com/docs/billing/pricing-plans, which has been read live. Checked against that live page, the free tier is unchanged — 10 messages and 25 AI Actions a month, exactly as stated below — but nothing above it is: Starter is now US$20/month (review: US$18) with 2,500 AI Actions rather than “100 tool credits”; “Pro / Max” is now Max at US$40/seat/month (review: US$29) with unlimited messages and 5,000 AI Actions per seat; and the US$149/seat Enterprise tier in the table no longer exists — the top published plan is Business at US$80/seat/month with 15,000 AI Actions. Annual billing is now advertised at US$14, US$28 and US$56 per month respectively. The price table, the AUD column, the brand name in the title, the verdict and the meta description have not been touched here. Rewriting a review around a rebrand and a full price ladder is a re-review, and the Value for Money score (3/5) rests on figures that have moved. Flagged for aid-score-sync and queued for a full re-review, including whether this should be listed as Better Analyst. Also queued: two other corpus files still name Formula Bot with no notice — review-gptexcel-australia-2026-06-26.md and roundup-best-ai-data-analysis-bi-australia-2026-06-07.md. No same-day capture — archive.org was returning “Temporarily Offline” and HTTP 429 on 21 September 2026.
  • 24 Sep 2026 — 1 Australian figure recut to the current basis. It was converted at about 1.70 — the retired basis — inside a column headed ex-GST whose other rows were already at 1.4045. Frequently asked questions

Is Formula Bot free to use in Australia?

Formula Bot has a free plan that includes 10 messages and 25 AI Actions per month. This is enough to evaluate the tool and handle occasional formula help. Paid plans start at USD $18/month (approximately AUD $25/month ex-GST), billed in US dollars.

How accurate are Formula Bot's AI-generated formulas?

Formula Bot handles standard formulas — SUMIF, VLOOKUP, COUNTIFS, and similar — reliably for most common requests. Complex nested logic with multiple conditions or business-specific edge cases is less reliable. The tool itself recommends human review before using generated formulas in compliance-sensitive reports, which is sound advice. Always test AI-generated formulas against your actual data before relying on them.

Does Formula Bot send my spreadsheet data overseas?

Yes. Formula Bot shares uploaded files and inputs with OpenAI and other AI providers for processing, under agreements that prohibit using this data for model training. Processing occurs on US servers. Australians handling personal information governed by the Privacy Act 1988 should not upload sensitive client data to the tool.
