The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

The verdict: Descript's core idea — edit video by editing text — is genuinely clever and saves real time for anyone producing podcasts, training videos, or talking-head content. The AI audio tools (Studio Sound, filler word removal, eye contact correction) work well and require no technical skill. But Australian users pay in USD with no AUD billing option, data is stored in the United States with no Australian region, GST treatment is not disclosed on the vendor's pricing pages, and the September 2025 pricing overhaul introduced a credits system that confuses even loyal users. For a Melbourne business owner making a dozen marketing videos a year, Descript is useful and accessible — but it is not built for you. Score: 15/25 — Good.

What it is

Descript is an AI-powered video and podcast editor built around a single clever idea: when you upload footage, it transcribes everything automatically, and you edit the video by editing the transcript. Delete a sentence of text, and the corresponding footage disappears. It is as close to editing a Word document as video has ever felt.

The tool was founded in San Francisco in 2017 by Andrew Mason — best known as the founder of Groupon — and has raised over US$100 million in funding. The company remains US-headquartered and US-focused, which has direct consequences for Australian users covered later in this review.

The core use cases are podcasting, YouTube long-form video, training and how-to content, and marketing talking-head videos. It is not a tool for narrative film editing, heavy colour grading, or anything requiring frame-by-frame precision. Think "business owner making a weekly LinkedIn video" — not "freelance video producer cutting a corporate documentary."

Its AI suite, branded as Underlord, covers filler word removal, background noise elimination (Studio Sound), eye contact correction, green screen, voice cloning (Overdub), AI captions, and B-roll generation. These features work from the same text-based interface and require no prior editing experience to operate.

What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

Descript prices exclusively in US dollars. There is no AUD billing option. All figures below convert at approximately ×1.40.

Plan USD/month (annual) USD/month (monthly) ~AUD/month (annual) ~AUD/month (monthly)
Free US$0 US$0 A$0 A$0
Hobbyist US$16/person US$24/person ~A$22/person ~A$34/person
Creator US$24/person US$35/person ~A$34/person ~A$49/person
Business US$50/person US$65/person ~A$70/person ~A$91/person
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom Custom

AUD figures are estimates at a USD/AUD exchange rate of approximately 1.40. Exchange rates fluctuate and your actual charge will depend on your card's rate at the time of billing.

GST treatment is not disclosed. Descript's pricing page makes no mention of GST. Whether Australian customers are charged GST at checkout — as is required for foreign digital services supplied to Australian consumers — is not stated anywhere on the vendor's public pricing or billing pages. Check your invoice carefully. If GST is not itemised, you may need to account for it separately.

Free tier limits. The free plan gives you 60 media minutes per month, 100 AI credits (one-time, not monthly), 5 GB of cloud storage, and 720p export with a watermark. It is enough to test the tool but not enough for regular production use.

The credits system. Since Descript's September 2025 pricing overhaul, AI features draw from two separate monthly pools: media minutes (for uploads and recordings) and AI credits (for features like Studio Sound, eye contact correction, filler word removal, Overdub, and AI-generated content). Credits do not roll over month-to-month. Top-ups cost US$35 for 350 credits, US$80 for 1,000 credits, and US$200 for 4,000 credits — available on Creator and Business plans only.

The practical catch: a one-hour interview recorded with separate host and guest audio tracks, plus a camera feed, can consume three or four media hours rather than one. That eats through quotas faster than you expect.

How it works / features

You start by uploading video or audio, or recording directly inside Descript using Rooms (its built-in remote recording studio, launched in April 2025). Transcription happens automatically in 23 languages — English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and more are supported, with Hindi in beta. Australian-accented English transcribes accurately in testing, though performance on strong regional accents or technical vocabulary varies.

Once transcribed, editing is text-based. Highlight and delete a section of transcript — the video clip is cut. This is the most genuinely time-saving feature in the product. What would take minutes of scrubbing through a timeline takes seconds in a text document.

The Underlord AI toolset covers:

  • Studio Sound — removes background noise, echo, and room reverb without manual EQ work. Point it at a video recorded in a kitchen or a home office and it delivers something that sounds significantly cleaner. One AI credit is consumed per use.
  • Filler word removal — detects "um," "uh," "like," "you know," and similar words, lists them, and removes them in one click. This alone recovers 20–30 minutes on a typical 45-minute recorded conversation.
  • Eye contact correction — adjusts the speaker's gaze so they appear to look at the camera, even if they were reading a script. It works convincingly at conversational pace; it struggles when the speaker moves their head rapidly.
  • Overdub (voice cloning) — clone your own voice with 10 minutes of training audio, then type corrections instead of re-recording. Available on all plans but limited to a 1,000-word vocabulary on Free and Hobbyist. Business and Enterprise get unlimited vocabularies.
  • Regenerate — the next generation of Overdub. Type a replacement sentence and Descript re-records it in your cloned voice, adjusts lip sync, and drops it into the video automatically.
  • AI captions — auto-generated, styled captions for social exports.
  • Green screen — AI background removal without a physical green screen.
  • AI B-roll — generates stock-style visuals from text descriptions.

Rooms (remote recording) supports up to 10 participants, records local video and audio to each participant's device (avoiding compression artefacts from internet instability), and syncs into Descript automatically. The Business and Enterprise tiers add a Control Room for producers to direct sessions without appearing on camera.

Automatic Multicam — launched with Season 7 in April 2025 — detects the active speaker and cuts between cameras intelligently, reducing post-production time for multi-person interviews.

What it does well

The text-based edit is genuinely faster. For voice-led content — podcasts, training videos, talking-head explainers — the transcript-first approach cuts editing time by at least half. A 30-minute recorded conversation can be tightened to 20 minutes in under 20 minutes of editing time. No comparable tool offers this at this price.

Studio Sound is good enough to skip a proper recording space. If you're recording marketing content in a home office, the noise removal is credible. It does not produce broadcast-quality audio, but it removes the "recorded in a bathroom" echo that kills credibility in video marketing.

The learning curve is shallow. A first-time video editor can produce a clean, polished clip within an hour. The interface reads like a cross between a word processor and a simple video tool — there is almost nothing that requires video editing knowledge.

Rooms is a practical podcast and interview studio. For a business doing recorded client interviews or internal training calls, Rooms eliminates the need for separate recording software. Riverside.fm and Squadcast charge separately for comparable recording quality. Descript includes it in the plan.

Filler word removal is unglamorous and excellent. The feature most users mention first is filler word removal. It is a small thing that saves significant time on every project.

Where it falls short

The credits system is confusing and expensive to run out of. The September 2025 overhaul metered previously-unlimited features. Studio Sound, eye contact correction, and Overdub all consume AI credits. A Creator plan's 800 monthly credits (with a 500 bonus on signup) sound generous until you run Studio Sound on a 10-episode podcast series. Frequent users report exhausting their monthly allocation before the month ends and paying for top-ups on top of their subscription.

Multi-file projects eat media minutes fast. Upload the same interview as four separate files — host audio, guest audio, video, and a cleaned export — and you consume four media hours, not one. Descript counts every file, not every piece of underlying content. This is not how users think about their work, and it creates unpleasant surprises at quota time.

Reliability on longer projects is hard to pin down. We could not verify performance on long-form edits against a primary source, and Descript publishes no uptime or stability data. The pattern users describe — slowdowns and occasional crashes when editing videos longer than 30 minutes, more so in the browser than the desktop app — is plausible for a cloud-dependent editor but is not something we can confirm independently. If you're editing a 90-minute webinar recording, save obsessively as a precaution.

Precision editing is genuinely limited. Descript is built for cuts, not for the kind of frame-accurate editing a traditional timeline allows. Colour correction is absent. Audio mixing is rudimentary. If you need to do anything beyond "cut the bad bits and clean the audio," you will hit the ceiling quickly.

Voice cloning output can sound robotic. Overdub and Regenerate work well for short corrections of a word or two. For regenerating entire sentences, the cloned voice sounds unnatural at the joins, particularly for Australian accents where the training data is thinner. Lip sync on replaced audio can look slightly off in close-up shots.

Customer support is largely automated. Users report that front-line support is handled by an AI bot. Escalating to a human takes time. For a paying Business customer troubleshooting a production deadline, this is a real problem.

No offline mode. Descript is cloud-dependent. A poor internet connection — common in regional Australia — degrades performance significantly.

Australian fit

This is where Descript's limitations become most concrete.

Pricing currency. Descript bills in USD only. There is no AUD billing option. Every charge on your credit card converts at your bank's rate, which fluctuates and typically includes a foreign transaction fee of 1–3%. Over a year on the Creator plan, you pay somewhere between A$444 and A$648 annually depending on exchange rate and fees — a figure that is genuinely hard to budget for.

GST. Foreign digital services sold to Australian consumers are subject to GST at 10%. Whether Descript adds GST at checkout or whether the listed USD price already factors this in is not disclosed on Descript's pricing or billing pages. We could not confirm the treatment from any primary source — check your invoice and consult your accountant if you are GST-registered.

Data residency. Descript's privacy policy is explicit: "Descript is based in the United States and we process and store information in the U.S." There is no Australian region. All video files, transcripts, voice clones, and project data are processed on US servers. For most small business video content this is unlikely to be a material risk. But if your videos contain client information, sensitive business conversations, or personally identifiable information about customers, you are sending that data offshore to a jurisdiction where Australian Privacy Principles do not automatically apply.

No AU-specific compliance documentation. Descript's security page lists SOC 2 Type II and alignment with GDPR and CCPA. There is no mention of the Australian Privacy Act or the Australian Privacy Principles. Australian-specific provisions are absent.

No local support hours. Support operates on US time. Priority support is available only on Business plans and above. There is no Australian phone line, no AU-based support team, and no stated SLA for AEST business hours.

AUD-aware outputs. Irrelevant for a video editing tool — Descript does not generate financial content. Not scored.

Score

Criterion Score Why
Value for Money 3/5 The free tier is genuinely useful for occasional users. But the September 2025 shift to metered AI credits means paid plans cost more than they appear. A Creator plan at ~A$34/month billed annually is reasonable until you hit your credits ceiling and need top-ups at US$35+ a time. USD-only billing adds real cost via exchange rate and card fees.
Ease of Use 5/5 Text-based editing is the most intuitive video workflow available for non-editors. A first-time user can produce a clean, polished result within an hour. Underlord AI tools are accessible from a right-click. No timeline skills required.
Feature Depth 4/5 The core editing workflow, Studio Sound, eye contact correction, filler removal, Rooms recording, and Overdub voice cloning cover a broad range of real business needs. Automatic Multicam and AI captions add further depth. Precision editing and colour work are absent, but that is not Descript's market.
Australian Fit 1/5 USD-only billing. US data storage. No Australian Privacy Act documentation. GST treatment unstated. No AU support hours. No AUD pricing. This is the weakest dimension — Descript was built for the US market and Australian users are an afterthought.
Reliability & Support 2/5 SOC 2 Type II certified and AES-256 encrypted. Stability on long-form projects is unassessed — Descript publishes no uptime data and we could not verify the crash reports against a primary source. What drags the score down is support: it is AI-bot first with slow human escalation, and there is no priority support below the Business plan (~A$70/month).
Total 15/25

★★★ Good (11–15 band)

Australian Fit gate note: Australian Fit scores 1/5 — the five-star threshold requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5. See our methodology for details.

Bottom line

If you make regular voice-led video content — podcasts, YouTube explainers, training materials, talking-head LinkedIn videos — and you record in anything less than a proper studio, Descript will save you hours every week. The text-based edit and Studio Sound alone justify the Creator plan for weekly producers.

If you're a small business owner making video occasionally — say, a monthly marketing video or a quarterly training update — the free plan covers your needs. Sixty media minutes a month is enough for a 20-minute video with room to spare.

If your videos contain sensitive client information or customer data, the US-only data storage is a genuine concern. Use a tool with an Australian or at minimum EU data region, or strip identifying information before upload.

If you need precise timeline control, colour grading, or complex audio mixing, Descript is not your tool. Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve are the right choices — they require a steeper learning curve but give you the control.

If you're an agency or team producing high-volume content, the credit system's unpredictability makes budget planning difficult. Run a trial month on Creator, record exactly what you plan to produce at volume, and measure credit consumption before committing to Business at ~A$70/month per seat.

Frequently asked questions

Is Descript available in Australia?

Yes — it works fully from Australia, with accurate transcription of Australian-accented English in testing. But it was built for the US market, with no AU-specific compliance documentation, no local support hours and no Australian phone line.

Does Descript charge in AUD?

No. Descript bills in US dollars only, with no AUD billing option. Every charge converts at your bank's rate plus a typical 1–3% foreign-transaction fee. GST treatment isn't disclosed on its pricing pages — check your invoice carefully.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free tier gives 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 5 GB storage and 720p export with a watermark — enough to test, not for regular production. Paid plans start at US$16/person/mo (~A$22) on Hobbyist.

Is my video data stored in Australia?

No. Descript's privacy policy is explicit that it processes and stores data in the US, with no Australian region. For most marketing content that's low-risk, but if your videos contain client or customer information you're sending it offshore — strip identifying details or use an AU/EU-region tool.

Who is Descript best for?

Australians making regular voice-led content — podcasts, training videos, talking-head LinkedIn clips — who record outside a proper studio. The text-based edit and Studio Sound save hours. It's not for precise timeline control, colour grading or sensitive client data.
