Power BI Copilot vs Looker Studio for Australian Business 2026: Which Should You Pick?
Our pick: Udio. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Both tools on this page bill Australians in Australian dollars, so no exchange rate of ours is applied. Microsoft prices in AUD and adds GST at checkout; Google Cloud bills Australian accounts in AUD through Google Australia Pty Limited with 10% GST. A GST-registered business claims that GST back as an input tax credit (Methodology). Currency re-verified in an Australian browser 21 September 2026.
Winner: Looker Studio for most Australian businesses. It scores 21/25 to Power BI Copilot's 19/25, it is genuinely free at the tier most teams need, and — corrected 21 September 2026 — its paid Pro tier is billed in Australian dollars by Google Australia Pty Limited, which lifts its Australian Fit to 4/5 and clears our Top Pick gate. Pick Power BI Copilot if you already run Microsoft 365 or if your data has to stay onshore: it is the more capable platform and the only one of the two with Australian data centres.
This verdict changed on 21 September 2026. Power BI Copilot previously won here partly because it was "the only one of the two with… a Top Pick-eligible Australian fit". That was true only because we had Looker Studio's billing currency wrong.

This is the business intelligence decision a lot of Australian small businesses end up making: the heavyweight Microsoft platform, or the free Google one. They're not really the same kind of tool. Power BI is the most capable BI platform an Australian SMB can buy, with an AI layer (Copilot) that turns plain-English questions into charts and formulas — but it costs real money and demands real setup. Looker Studio (the product Google renamed back from "Looker Studio" to "Data Studio" in April 2026) is free at the tier most small businesses will ever need, and effortless if your data already lives in Google. The decision comes down to where your data lives, how deep your reporting goes, and how much data residency matters to you.

What both tools actually do
Both are cloud business intelligence platforms: connect a data source, build interactive dashboards and reports, share them with your team, and use them to make decisions. For a non-technical owner, the day-to-day job — pull in data, drag charts onto a canvas, share a link — is broadly similar on either.
The difference is depth and where the AI sits. Power BI connects to databases, spreadsheets, cloud services and hundreds of other sources, and its AI layer — Copilot — lets you type a question like "show me revenue by region for the last six months" and get a chart back, draft a report from a prompt, summarise a dashboard in three bullets, or write a DAX formula from a plain-English description. Looker Studio connects natively to Google Analytics 4, Sheets, Search Console, BigQuery, YouTube and Google Ads in one click, builds drag-and-drop dashboards with no code, and now ships Gemini AI features — natural-language calculated fields and AI-assisted export to Slides — on its paid Pro tier, plus Conversational Analytics (plain-English querying) that works best against BigQuery data.
Treat both AI layers as sharp assistants, not autopilots. Power BI's Copilot is the more capable and more broadly available of the two; Looker Studio's Gemini features are Pro-only and still carry a "Preview" label.
Pricing in Australia
This is where the two diverge completely — one is premium and layered, the other is free until it isn't.
Looker Studio is free at the tier most businesses need. The core product costs nothing, permanently: unlimited reports, unlimited dashboards, all native Google connectors, and unlimited viewer seats. That's not a crippled demo — it's working BI. The AI features live in Data Studio Pro, listed at US$9 per user, per Google Cloud project, per month on Google's own product page (the /looker-studio/pricing path still 404s; the figure is on cloud.google.com/looker-studio, read 21 September 2026). You do not pay that in US dollars. A Cloud Billing account opened in Australia operates in AUD, Google converts its own list prices at a rate reset at the start of each month, and the invoice comes from Google Australia Pty Limited with 10% GST — roughly A$12.60/user/month before GST, about A$13.90 with it, at September 2026 rates. One catch worth knowing: Pro is billed per user per Google Cloud project, so agencies running clients across separate projects pay the fee on each.
The other catch is connectors. The free ride ends the moment you need non-Google data. Pulling in Shopify, Meta Ads, Xero, MYOB or Salesforce means a third-party connector — most commonly Supermetrics, which starts at around US$39/month (annual) or US$49/month (monthly). For a mixed-data business, that erodes the "free" headline fast.
Power BI is priced like a premium product, in two layers. Power BI Pro is AU$21.00/user/month (paid yearly, exc GST) — and that's the trap, because Pro does not include Copilot. To get the AI features this comparison is about, you need Premium Per User at AU$35.90/user/month (paid yearly, exc GST), plus Microsoft Fabric capacity at the tenant level (F2 or higher, consumption-based — check the Microsoft Fabric pricing page for current AUD rates). Both prices were confirmed current on Microsoft's Australian pricing page on 18 June 2026. Microsoft bills Australians in AUD and adds GST at checkout; for a registered business the GST is claimable as an input tax credit, so the real cost is effectively the pre-GST figure.
On sticker price, Looker Studio wins outright — zero beats AU$35.90 plus capacity every time. Power BI only closes the gap when you value what the money buys: depth, breadth, and onshore data processing.
Where Power BI Copilot wins
- Feature depth is best-in-class. Power BI scored a perfect 5/5 on Feature Depth in our review — it's the most capable BI platform available to Australian SMBs, full stop. Copilot adds real capability on top: NL queries, DAX generation, auto-summaries and report drafting.
- DAX generation lowers a genuine barrier. DAX is Power BI's formula language and it's hard to learn. Describing what you want in plain English and getting a working formula back is one of Copilot's most practically useful features for business users.
- Australian data residency. Microsoft runs data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, so your underlying business data can stay in Australia — a meaningful edge, especially with the December 2026 Privacy Act amendments removing the small-business exemption for many sub-$3m-turnover businesses. (Honest caveat: Copilot's AI processing currently routes prompts through Azure OpenAI in US data centres, and an admin has to enable cross-geo processing to use it — so the prompt layer leaves Australia even though your data sits onshore.)
- It extends Microsoft 365 rather than adding a platform. If your business already runs on Microsoft 365, Power BI plugs into Excel, SharePoint, Teams and Azure with no integration work and your identity already in Azure AD.
- Rock-solid reliability. Enterprise-grade Microsoft infrastructure earned a 5/5 for Reliability & Support in our review.
Where Looker Studio wins
- Price — it's genuinely free. Looker Studio scored 5/5 on Value for Money. No other BI tool in the category comes close at zero cost, and the free tier is the whole product for most SMBs.
- Unlimited viewer seats. Sharing dashboards with clients, the board or the whole team costs nothing extra — a real advantage over Power BI's per-seat model for read-only users.
- One-click Google integration. Google Analytics 4, Search Console, Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube and Google Ads all connect in a click. For a marketing team on Google's stack, nothing else connects to Google's own data this fast.
- Faster to value for simple reporting. A traffic dashboard or marketing-attribution report takes an hour, not a week, with no SQL for standard cases. Power BI, by contrast, scored just 2/5 on Ease of Use — its data-modelling setup is not a Tuesday-afternoon job.
- Higher raw score. Looker Studio takes it 21/25 to 19/25 on the underlying reviews — driven by that free price, its reliability, and AUD billing through an Australian entity.
Australian fit: 4/5 vs 3/5 — the decisive gap
This is where the two part ways, and it matters more than the one-point score difference suggests.
Power BI scores 4/5 on Australian Fit. AU data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, AUD billing, GST at checkout, native Microsoft 365 integration. The flagged caveat is Copilot's cross-geo prompt processing in the US — worth evaluating for sensitive-data environments, but not disqualifying.
Looker Studio scores 4/5 on Australian Fit — raised from 3/5 on 21 September 2026. Google runs Sydney and Melbourne regions, bills Australian Cloud Billing accounts in AUD, and invoices through Google Australia Pty Limited with 10% GST on a claimable local tax invoice. What keeps it off 5/5 is real but narrower than we had it: genuinely opaque data-residency terms for the Data Studio processing layer specifically, documentation-only support on the free tier, and per-project Pro billing. Its report outputs aren't Australia-aware by default either — figures format as USD and dates default to US format unless you override them, which is a formatting default, not a billing one.
That gap is decisive under our editorial rules. Under the Australian Fit gate, a category Top Pick requires an Australian Fit of at least 4/5. Looker Studio's 3/5 means that even though it scores one point higher overall (20 vs 19), it cannot be named the Data Analysis & BI category Top Pick. Power BI Copilot can — its 4/5 clears the gate. A tool has to serve Australians well to win the category here, not just score well on paper.
This comparison is general information, not financial, tax, or compliance advice — confirm data-residency and Privacy Act obligations for your circumstances with a qualified adviser before connecting sensitive customer data to either tool.
Which to pick — decision framework
- You already run on Microsoft 365 → Power BI Copilot. The integration is tight, the incremental cost is manageable, and you're extending infrastructure you already pay for rather than onboarding a new platform.
- You live in Google Workspace and report mostly on GA4, Sheets and Google Ads → Looker Studio. Free, one-click, running this afternoon.
- You need serious reporting on transactional or finance/ops data → Power BI Copilot. It earned 5/5 on Feature Depth; Looker Studio scored 3/5 and hits a ceiling fast outside the Google stack.
- You're a 1–3 person micro-business with simple dashboard needs → Looker Studio. Don't pay for Power BI's depth and setup overhead you won't use.
- Data must stay in Australia for compliance → Power BI Copilot, with onshore data centres — but disable or carefully scope Copilot if the US prompt-processing route is a problem, and get Google's residency terms in writing before trusting Looker Studio with sensitive data.
- Your data is split across Shopify, Meta, Xero/MYOB and Salesforce → Power BI Copilot. Once you're paying Supermetrics-style connector fees to feed Looker Studio, the "free" advantage is gone.
- You just want the safest, most capable default for a growing business → Power BI Copilot.
The verdict
Winner: Looker Studio, for most Australian businesses. It scores 21/25 to Power BI Copilot's 19/25, it is free at the tier most teams will ever need, and both tools now clear the Australian Fit gate at 4/5 — so the tie-break that used to decide this comparison has gone. For a marketing team tracking GA4 and Google Ads, a working dashboard by this afternoon at no cost is a better answer than a licence stack. The Pro tier, if you want Gemini, is about A$13.90 per user per project per month all-in, billed in Australian dollars.
Power BI Copilot is still the right buy for a large, specific group: Microsoft 365 businesses, and anyone with a hard onshore-residency requirement. It's the more capable platform (5/5 Feature Depth, 5/5 Reliability), it's the only one of the two with Australian data centres, and the AI layer is genuinely useful — NL queries and DAX generation lower real barriers, not a gimmick. The price is the price: budget for PPU at AU$35.90/user/month plus Fabric capacity, get the pricing structure clear before you sign, and allow for proper setup or a consultant to build the data model.
What changed, and why. Until 21 September 2026 this comparison gave the win to Power BI on the grounds that it was the only one of the two eligible for a category Top Pick. Looker Studio was marked down to Australian Fit 3/5 partly for "USD-only Pro pricing" — and that was wrong. Google Cloud's own billing documentation lists Australia as an AUD-billed country, and its Australian invoices come from Google Australia Pty Limited with GST. Correcting it took Looker Studio to 21/25 and 4/5, and with it the verdict.
The honest read: these aren't really competing for the same buyer. If your data lives in Microsoft and you need depth, pay for Power BI. If it lives in Google and you need dashboards, start free with Looker Studio. Pick on where your data already is — not on the one-point score gap.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for Australian businesses?
Power BI Copilot. It's the only one of the two with Australian data centres (Sydney and Melbourne), it scores 4/5 on Australian Fit, and it's our category Top Pick. Looker Studio is the smarter pick for Google Workspace teams with simple reporting.
Which is cheaper in AUD?
Looker Studio, easily. Its core product is genuinely free with unlimited reports and viewer seats. Power BI's AI tier (Premium Per User) is AU$35.90/user/month plus Fabric capacity, both excluding GST.
Is there a free plan or free trial?
Looker Studio is free permanently at the tier most small businesses need. Power BI has no free AI tier — its cheapest paid plan (Pro) is AU$21.00/user/month and doesn't even include Copilot.
Does either keep my data in Australia?
Power BI runs data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, so your underlying data can stay onshore — though Copilot prompts route through US data centres. Looker Studio's Data Studio processing residency is unconfirmed; get Google's terms in writing before trusting it with sensitive data.
Can I use both?
Not really the point here — they're different-stack tools. Pick on where your data already lives: Microsoft 365 teams take Power BI, Google Workspace teams take Looker Studio.

This comparison draws on The AI Directory Australia's underlying reviews of Power BI Copilot (19/25, Australian Fit 4/5) and Looker Studio (21/25, Australian Fit 4/5), each scored against our five-criteria framework and verified against the vendors' own Australian pricing and product pages. Power BI Pro (AU$21.00/user/month) and Premium Per User (AU$35.90/user/month) were re-confirmed on Microsoft's Australian pricing page on 18 June 2026 — both exclude GST, which Microsoft adds at checkout. Copilot also requires Microsoft Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) at the tenant level. Data Studio Pro's US$9 per user per project per month list price was read on cloud.google.com/looker-studio in an Australian browser on 21 September 2026; the /looker-studio/pricing path still returns 404. Australian billing currency is confirmed by Google Cloud's own documentation (cloud.google.com/billing/docs/resources/currency lists Australia → AUD) and the Australian tax note (support.google.com/cloud/answer/7079025, invoices issued by Google Australia Pty Limited with 10% GST).
