Perplexity opens Enterprise Max to a single seat — governance for solo operators in 2026
Posted: 4 May 2026 · Category: AI Assistants
Enterprise governance tools used to come with a tax: you had to be an enterprise. Perplexity just removed it.
What changed
On 4 May 2026, Perplexity's "Improved Computer Models and Enterprise Updates" made Enterprise Max usable at a single seat. The controls that previously sat behind a 50-seat minimum are now available to one buyer: SCIM provisioning, audit logs, configurable data retention, and real-time organisation analytics.
The same update began rolling out GPT-5.5 as the default orchestration model in Perplexity Computer for Pro and Max users. That is the model now coordinating multi-step research and agentic tasks inside Computer.
What it means for Australians
This is the more interesting half of the news for our readers. Plenty of Australian businesses that need governance controls are not 50-person operations. They are sole practitioners, two-partner firms, and small consultancies — in law, accounting, financial advice, and health — who handle client data and have real obligations under the Privacy Act 1988.
Until now, those operators could not buy enterprise-grade controls without enterprise-grade headcount. Configurable data retention is the one to watch: being able to set how long prompts and outputs are kept matters when you are accountable for client information. Audit logs give you a record of what was run and when. Neither was previously on the table for a one-person firm.
A caution. Single-seat access to these controls is a meaningful step, but it does not by itself make Perplexity compliant with your obligations. Data residency and where processing happens still need checking against your own requirements, and these tools support good practice rather than replace professional or legal advice. Pricing for the single-seat tier was not published at AUD with GST treatment at the time of writing — confirm the current figure and tax handling before you commit.
Does it change our recommendation
Not yet — but it sharpens the picture. We covered the engine behind this in our first look at Perplexity Computer. This update doesn't change the search experience most readers use; it lowers the bar for small AU firms that want the governance layer. We'll fold it into the next full Perplexity assessment and test the controls directly. For now: if you are a solo operator who held off because the seat minimum priced you out, it's worth a fresh look.
