Perplexity brings Personal Computer to the Mac (April 2026)
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
What changed
Perplexity has shipped Personal Computer as a native Mac app. Its agentic "digital worker" — the feature that runs multi-step research and tasks on your behalf rather than just answering a question — now lives on the desktop instead of inside a browser tab.
We covered Personal Computer when it first appeared earlier this year. The idea is the same: you hand it a job, and it works through the steps, browsing and gathering as it goes. What is new is where it runs. A native Mac app means it opens like any other program, sits in the Dock, and does not depend on you keeping a tab alive.
Perplexity also pushed a round of updates to the Computer agent itself alongside the Mac launch — refinements to how it handles longer, multi-stage tasks.
What it means for Australians
The headline for Australian users is convenience, not pricing. Personal Computer is a feature of Perplexity's paid tiers, so this is aimed at Australians already on Pro or Max.
Two things to keep front of mind.
First, the billing. Perplexity still charges in US dollars. Pro is US$20 a month — roughly A$28 at the current exchange rate, ex-GST (US$20 × 1.40 = A$28). A native app does not change the currency on your statement, and your card issuer may add a foreign-transaction fee.
Second, the nature of an agent on your desktop. A tool that browses and acts across multiple steps is doing more on your behalf than a search box. For a Melbourne business owner pulling together supplier research or a market scan, that is genuinely useful — it turns a morning of tab-juggling into a single instruction. But check what it is reaching for before you trust it with anything sensitive, and read its working, not just the summary. An agent that gets a step wrong fails quietly.
There is no Australian data-residency story here either way: Perplexity processes offshore. That is unchanged by the move to the desktop.
Does it change our recommendation?
No. Our first look at Personal Computer already flagged the agent as the most interesting thing Perplexity is building. A native Mac app makes that agent easier to live with, which is welcome — but it is a packaging upgrade, not a new reason to subscribe.
If you are already paying for Pro or Max and you work on a Mac, install it; the desktop app is a clear improvement over the browser tab. If you are weighing Perplexity for the first time, judge it on the research quality and the USD bill, not on this. See our methodology for how we weigh cost and Australian fit.
