Notion adds data residency in Tokyo and Seoul — Australia isn't on the map

On 23 March Notion announced Enterprise data residency in Tokyo and Seoul, available from May 2026 — its third and fourth residency regions after Frankfurt for the EU. The announcement came from Notion's CTO on the company blog. Australia is not announced, and is not on the public roadmap.

What changed

Until now, Notion Enterprise customers outside the EU had one practical answer to "where does our data live?": US-West-2, Oregon — the default. From May, Japanese and Korean enterprises get to keep workspace data in-country. It's a meaningful expansion, and it tells you Notion can build this per-region when the market justifies it.

Which is exactly the uncomfortable part for Australian customers: Tokyo and Seoul made the business case. Sydney didn't.

What it means for Australians

If your organisation has been telling its risk committee "Notion data residency is coming," this announcement is the correction: it's coming — for other people. Australian Notion workspaces stay in Oregon for the foreseeable future, and any compliance posture built on local residency needs a different tool or a different argument.

For most Australian small businesses this changes nothing day-to-day — Notion's offshore hosting was already the deal you'd accepted. But for legal, health, finance, and government-adjacent teams where data location is a hard requirement rather than a preference, the roadmap silence is the answer. The APAC investment going to Tokyo and Seoul first also says something about where Australia sits in the queue if a Sydney region ever does get built.

What we're watching

Whether Australian enterprise demand gets Sydney onto the roadmap, and how Notion's local fit compares once we put it through the full review framework — data residency will weigh heavily in that score.

Does this affect Australian users?

No, and that's the point. Australia is not announced and not on the public roadmap. Australian Notion workspaces stay in Oregon (US-West-2) for the foreseeable future. Any compliance posture built on local residency needs a different tool or a different argument.

Does it change our recommendation?

Not yet — data residency will weigh heavily once we put Notion through the full review framework. For legal, health, finance and government-adjacent teams where data location is a hard requirement, the roadmap silence is the answer.
