Google Firebase Studio, explained: the agentic app builder is winding down — and what that means for Australians
Posted: 25 June 2026 · Category: App & Web Builders
TL;DR: Google has stopped new sign-ups to its agentic prompt-to-app builder, Firebase Studio, and will switch it off on 22 March 2027 — so don't start a new project there. The good news for Australians is in the layer underneath it: Firebase's database, auth and functions still run in Google Cloud's Sydney region, billed in AUD. That data-residency edge is real, with one gap worth knowing.
What changed
Firebase Studio was Google's browser-based, AI-driven builder: describe an app in plain language and an agent powered by Gemini scaffolds the code, backend and a live preview. Google announced its sunset on 19 March 2026. As of 22 June 2026 — three days ago — new workspace creation and sign-ups are disabled, and existing projects must migrate to Google AI Studio (for quick prototyping) or Google Antigravity (for code-first agentic work). The environment goes dark on 22 March 2027. Google is clear that the core Firebase services — Cloud Firestore, Authentication and App Hosting — are not affected and keep running.
Why it matters for Australians
Two things, separated cleanly.
The builder itself: if you were about to start a project in Firebase Studio, don't. New sign-ups are closed, and anything you build has a hard nine-month clock on it. Existing users should plan a migration now, not later.
The Australian angle that actually matters sits in the services that survive. Cloud Firestore and Cloud Functions both run in Google Cloud's australia-southeast1 (Sydney) region, and Google Cloud bills in Australian dollars on accounts set up that way. For an Australian business that needs customer data to stay onshore, that is a genuine edge over builders that only offer US hosting. One honest caveat: Firebase App Hosting does not yet support the Sydney region, and Cloud Functions in Australia sit in a higher pricing tier, so check region support and cost per service before you commit.
Does this change our recommendation?
Yes, for the builder. Firebase Studio is no longer a tool to start on, and our coverage will reflect that — see our Firebase Studio review for Australians. The Firebase platform underneath it remains a strong, Sydney-hosted option, and our best AI coding tools for Australians roundup is the better place to pick a builder that is still taking new projects.
